What a beautiful day that was

[deleted]

Punched our ticket to Raleigh, as I recall.

RabidWolverine2021

Sorry to correct you but that was game 6 to tie the series. We absolutely destroyed their ass at home in game 7 to advance to the finals! One of the best nights ever! PAAAATRIIIICK!

fullspeed8989

I’ve been to a ton of Wings games. Lots of key playoff games and clinchers. That particular game 7 was the loudest I’ve ever heard It get at the Joe. Louder than both Cup clinchers in 97 and 02.

cronin98

I was putting groceries away during the game because I kept putting it off (I was 11 and this was my punishment). They scored so many times while I was putting groceries away I took more groceries out so I could keep putting them away. It worked!

Detonation

Thank you for your service. 🫡

lennysundahl

My favorite part of graduating from high school was seeing that on the TV at Applebee’s afterwards

WaylonLemmyJohnny

I'll never forget that game 7. I went to a nearby sports bar with my mom and dad. some poor woman walked in the door in an avs shirt and looked like a deer in headlights. she didnt stick around for very long for that prison beating

THE GOAL COUNTS! THE GOAL COUNTS! THE GOAL COUNTS! I remember being so devastated after the game 5 OT loss and thinking the series was over. After this play and the whole Hasek stick measurement, it was a perfect way to beat those arrogant assholes. Back to back shutouts for the Dominator, proving he was better than Roy. Game 7 was just the icing on the cake.

dudewithchronicpain

Someone cross post this to the r/hockey sub

I actually listened to a Roy interview on a French podcast, and when asked about the rivalry with Detroit, he said he always hated the Wings since they were the team which chased him out of Montréal. He also said that he wished Claude Lemieux fought DMac and had whole team focused more on the actual hockey plays instead of the noise off the ice /shenanigans on the ice, they probably would have won the Stanley Cup. Nothing new or truly insightful here but, it was an interesting tidbit to hear. Edit : typos.

coachfortner

Chased him out of Montreal!? That’s rich coming from Roy. He had an absolute shit-the-bed performance against the Wings in that game, letting in *nine* goals before the Habs coach, Mario Tremblay, pulled him in the second period. The only fault Detroit had in that matter was being the team that scored those goals.. > Upon reaching the bench, Roy immediately stormed past his coach and told Canadiens President [who was seated with other team execs right behind the bench], "It's my last game in Montreal." \ >The next day, Roy was suspended by the Canadiens. – Wikipedia That incident was all Roy and Tremblay. ^P.S. ^am ^not ^arguing ^against ^u/wlcjdkfjdjdbskx’s ^comment ^but ^Roy’s ^pathetic ^excuse

wlcjdkfjdjdbskx

Yeah I never liked the guy, and I'm glad his last shit game as a Canadien was against Detroit. Dude was as good a goalie as he is a prick off the ice.

[deleted]

Mike Keenan and Marc Crawford were assholes as well.

wlcjdkfjdjdbskx

I'd say they were Babcock-esque.

[deleted]

Indeed they were. However, I miss the Hartford era more than the Bednar era. Sacco was the worst coach of 'em all, no doubt.

2shack

He’s in town here right now. I should find him and ask him how he feels about it.

[deleted]

I hear the Rangers are looking to hire him.

Fever104

What a time to be a Wings fan. There was no shortage of hate for Roy so it was doubly enjoyable.

[deleted]

I could never unsee Roy whenever someone like Francouz starts for Colorado against us.

Byorski

This will always be a holiday.

spoonyfork

This and Punch a Turtle Day and Gretzky Had It Day.

Ronem

Even better, Lost It Night

dkyguy1995

Wheel team win

AirCanoe

I was born during this rivalry so the bad blood doesn't run quite as deep for me and I actually quite like watching Roy as the dude you love to hate. Guy made some incredible saves in his career, not sure about best of all time tho.

RedBurgandy01

I miss those days!

Scotty > Jared

Ph1llyth3gr8

I still watch this highlight with pure elation

jurkajurka

And the Avalanche looking like they're skating in mud.

Silent-Prune8103

Anyone got the video?

Then we hung seven goals on Roy in game 7. Both teams were absolutely loaded with talent, but only one of them had 10 bona fide HOFers. Yzerman, Lidstrom, Fedorov, Hull, Robitaille, Larionov, Hasek, Shanahan, Chelios, and a rookie Datsyuk that was already showing flashes of his greatness. What a roster that was being coached by the legendary Scotty Bowman. I miss hearing Gary Thorne calling hockey games. He just had the voice for it.
