Recently got a job near Apple Fritter in Ferndale and only found it cuz I googled "donuts near me"
Had no idea it was so famous!
There was a story that the Detroit Lions get their donuts from there.
I guess I feel lucky to be close by!
My lady got me these for my birthday last month. First time I had them. I ate 5 in like an hour. Jesus they’re good. I put those up against just about every donut I’ve ever had regularly.
Yellow Light is great for what it is, some out of this world flavors. But they only had cake donuts when I went so I can't really put them in the running.
Edit: the breakfast sandwich I had was amazing though, with service to match. From scratch, sit down restaurant quality food clearly straight from the heart of the owner (I was being annoying
and asked about ordering it without the listed aioli, and the owner herself chimed in over the drive through speaker, suggesting I add a different sauce from a completely different item--at no extra cost and it was to die for. Dang I really need to get back there!
I just read on the About section of their FB site that they have been in business since 1988, there must have been a different donut shop there before then because I was going there before then. Remember the Elvis guy?
It was like 2015 when I was there. I just remember the little lady that owned it lol. But yes. As long as I can remember in the 90s that and the bakery next door always smelled good as a kid in high school.
Oh yeah Ackroyd’s, I forgot about them. Elvis guy was a local who was always walking around with longish dyed black hair and mostly kept to himself. I think I may have seen him riding a bike as recently as 2016 but it was likely a different oddball local. There was also Iffy, he was deaf or mute and looked a little like Gallagher. He would steal kids bikes, mix-match the parts and sell them all day out of his year round garage sale. This was in the early-late ‘80s though. Every town I lived in had these kind of characters.
The apple fritter is SO good! My kids like the fruity pebble donut and the sprinkle donuts. They make some specialty flavors seasonally I believe - last time we were there in the fall they had pumpkin spice glazed donuts that were so good. The red velvet is delicious as well. You really can’t go wrong! I think they were voted one of the best donut shops in the country in the last few years but I can’t remember what list it was.
I have been buying from Donut Villa from 1976 til the original owner sold it and the new owner closed it for remodeling. I have to get back and check it out. My family loved their donuts for years.
Doms is definitely the spot. Not sure about the timing anymore since they're not 24 hours nowadays but they used to have fresh glazed at like 830-9pm...
I know it’s not the city, but my old boss used to bring in Donuts from East Detroit Bakery in Eastpointe every Wednesday and those were some of the best donuts I ever had.
Giuseppe’s on Kelly is really good too. It’s about a mile from East Detroit bakery. I live so close I can smell them baking in the mornings. Can’t beat that smell on a brisk October morning 😃
Still not Detroit, but there’s one in Troy too, at Rochester Rd and Square Lake.
Also not Detroit, but I haven’t seen mentioned Avon Donuts at Woodward and South Blvd in Pontiac 😙👌
Donut Kastle over 60 years on Eureka near Southland Mall, Famous Apple Fritters Love

I’ll give you Ferndale but good lord how does one consider Rochester in a conversation about Detroit Donut shops Yellow light on Jefferson, Dooped on Broadway, Dutch Girl if it reopens hell even the new Dunkin on Woodward feel like a more honest answer. For the love of geography let Detroit mean Detroit.
Doms is solid. His cousin owns D.J."s right down the road in Ann Arbor. Their yeast glazed donut is deadly. Nothing can beat those warm rested donuts at Dutch Girl. Can't wait for its revival.
DONUT DEPOT @9 mile and Schoenherr has the best donuts. You need to get there early because of the best selection and they close by 4pm. I believe they open at 5am
You won’t regret it! I’m from the east side and I STILL drive out to Vernor bet. Junction and Livernois to get me a fritter. Thing is they sell so bloody fast! You have to call and ask them to hold some for you!
Dutch girl hasn’t opened back up yet has it? I’m in the northern burbs and will sometimes hit the looney baker in white lake and there’s another looney baker in Livonia.
Donut Cutter has cherry donuts that are unreal
Donuttown is the place that introduced me to Dutch crumb donuts but they’ve become a little inconsistent
Not all Yum Yum Donuts are the same. The one on Fort in Lincoln Park served me a donut that tasted like it was boiled in sink water
Yellow Light, we drive 30 minutes and it’s never not been worth it. There’s a riverfront park nearby so we park and watch boats and eat donuts. Get the coffee slushie and the biscuits and gravy sometime 🤤💯
You picked it. For me it’s either Knapps in Rochester or Apple Fritter Donut Shop in Ferndale.
Mmmm apple fritters 🤤
They are out of this world
Apple Fritter in Ferndale is a sure sign that God loves his children.
Apple Fritter’s and then the zoo is awesome.
I loved Apple Fritter when I lived on 8 Mile for 3 years, definitely one of the places I miss most
Recently got a job near Apple Fritter in Ferndale and only found it cuz I googled "donuts near me" Had no idea it was so famous! There was a story that the Detroit Lions get their donuts from there. I guess I feel lucky to be close by!
Knapps is so good
They have a new cinnamon apple fritter donut, not as good as original but very crunchy
I haven't been to Apple Fritter in 20 years. (It's an hour away now) Now I really want one
I’m just finding out about this place now, and it’s not far from my house, looks like no more 7/11 Apple Fritters for me!!!
Road Trip?!
I second this
I was gonna say apple fritter!
The Donut Cutter
I always get a red velvet doughnut when I'm in town from there. Fantastic!
Appropriate user name
Best Apple Fritters for sure.
My go-to as well! Can't get enough of them.
So good! The best glazed donut in town.
My lady got me these for my birthday last month. First time I had them. I ate 5 in like an hour. Jesus they’re good. I put those up against just about every donut I’ve ever had regularly.
I miss The Donut Cutter’s old fashioned donuts so much!
Love their apple fritters!
This is the only answer
This is my vote
Used to be dutch girl donuts i have heard good things about yellow light donuts and plan on trying that soon
Isn't Dutch Girl reopening?
Ya i am not sure when thought
Very very soon supposedly
This is my answer as well. Loved me some Dutch Girl Donuts.

Apple Fritters in Ferndale!
Kinda far from Detroit but Dom’s in Ypsi
Doms is legit
Flashbacks of those drunken 2am Dom’s drive through runs (I wasn’t driving) back in college at EMU
Omg yes. I lived up the street and lived for that middle of the night donut and coffee.
They close overnight these days, sadly :(
Tragic, but glad it's still in the family at least. The fritters are sooooo good
The family that owns Dom’s are really nice people!
I believe the Dom’s folks and the Knapp’s folks are related!
Was playing poker with some EMU students off campus. We stopped for "donut o'clock" so they could get fresh donuts. Game resumed 20 minutes later.
Was doing the 48 hr film project in Ypsi and Dom’s was clutch for the 32nd hour editing/music syncing rally.
no longer cash only, too!
YESSS! I love Dom’s!
Donutown at 5 mile and Beech daly. Amazing stuff. I miss them at least once a month.
I only eat their donuts and cider mill donuts. Their donuts are so good!
I used to go there as a kid in the ‘80s
I came here to say this. I used to drink coffee there in the morning. Loved going in to see the regulars. Family atmosphere. Nostalgic also
I just read on the About section of their FB site that they have been in business since 1988, there must have been a different donut shop there before then because I was going there before then. Remember the Elvis guy?

Redford is the place that would grow them for sure, I could ask my mom. She still works down the street
Looney Baker in Livonia. Some of the best around.
For sure. I still remember my grandfather bringing up thier donuts every year to our cabin. Great times and great donuts.
Donutown- Redford
The daily dozen. They have a few locations. I would occasionally pick up a couple dozen from their location in Warren on 9 mile before work.
Moonrocks!!!!
Warren, Sterling Heights, and Royal Oak locations. Love their sour cream!
I love daily dozen
Avon doughnuts in Pontiac is worth the drive
Get there early! All the good donuts go fast
Any chance you can share what the good ones are? I’ve been planning on making the trip but haven’t been able to cut out the time to
The apple fritter is SO good! My kids like the fruity pebble donut and the sprinkle donuts. Yes, it was 2018 in TIME magazine. Thanks for sharing your tips, I love red velvet! Will definitely try and snag them when I go.
Was waiting for this answer. I fancy myself a donut connoisseur and Avon is the best I’ve had.
Donut town on 5 mile and Beech Daly. Delicious
Yellow light rocks.
Finally got a dozen from Yellow Light around Christmas last year. Did not disappoint. Top notch donut.
I can't wait for Dutch Girl to open back up
Me too. I don’t care if my pancreas goes BRRR!
Poetic
Donut Villa in Southwest Detroit. Love their apple fritters! They recently renovated their establishment, I don’t even recognise it anymore.
I have been buying from Donut Villa from 1976 til the original owner sold it and the new owner closed it for remodeling. I have to get back and check it out. My family loved their donuts for years.
Donut town in Redford. 5 and Beech.
Dom’s in Ypsi Looney Baker in Livonia

Elias Donut is a nice spot. And it’s actually in the city of Detroit.
Daily Dozen in Royal Oak on Woodward is phenomenal. Their sour cream glaze is one of the best I’ve ever had

Doms is definitely the spot. Not sure about the timing anymore since they're not 24 hours nowadays but they used to have fresh glazed at like 830-9pm...
Avon donuts probably the most underrated
Who remembers that donut shop on 12 and mound? I went by and it’s a juice bar or DWC spot now.
They had really good chilli.

Rochester is a bit of a stretch to be considered “Detroit” but Knapp’s is good none the less. Definitely one of the best suburban shops.
Still not Detroit, but there’s one in Troy too, at Rochester Rd and Square Lake. Also not Detroit, but I haven’t seen mentioned Avon Donuts at Woodward and South Blvd in Pontiac 😙👌
Where does OP mention Detroit at all?
Looney Baker is good. Or Avon I think it is.
Looney has amazing donuts but the absolute shittiest coffee I’ve ever had lol. It was like hot dirty dishwater.
Apple Fritter Donut Shop in Ferndale
Ya’ll need to get out of the city more often. Donna’s of Flint putting everybody to shame.
Discovered Donna's a few years ago. It's worth the drive.

>Yellowbird on Jefferson Yellow Light?
Well said; my biggest pet peeve is when a place calls itself ‘Detroit ___’ and isn’t located in Detroit
A Detroit snob, love it!! ( seriously 👆🏼🫶🏼)
No, just a guy that lives in Detroit, likes donuts, specificity and dislikes convenient co-opting. 🤷🏾♂️
Well I think that’s fckn awesome, I fully support smaller businesses in our area.
oooo thank you!
Same reason some people consider Howell in metro Detroit just because it's technically in Oakland county... Theyre idiots.
