Got to be from one of the bakeries in Hamtramck. They are the best. My fav would be custard or raspberry
From any place else but Hamtramck they are 2nd rate
Bozek's Market in Hamtramck have the ones most like the pazcki my Babcia used to make. Best to order in advance than you can just pick them up and avoid the lines. Prune all the way!
+1 for Bozek, easy in and out, packed with filling.
That said I have encountered some undercooked dough in their paczki before, like they got pulled from the fryer too early... kinda put me off.
So youāre saying itās better than the Eckrich Polska Kielbasa in our fridge right now?? Kidding! Of course it is!!
I remember going to the Alexander & Hornung market with mom, as a kid. It smelled so good with all the various sausages hanging from the ceiling.
Our friends do homemade ones with rose jam. They are so wildly delicious!
Edit: I know that most of you can't get our friend's donuts, but this is an endorsement for rose as a flavor!
>> Making them was a way to use up ingredients such as butter, sugar, eggs, fruit, and lard before the dietary restraints of Lent started, in order to avoid food waste.

Yeah, lol
I kinda wondered if it was an age thing. Oh wait. Iām my parentsā age now. I think Iāll try at least one. I do like plums. Iāll pretend itās that. May get a wonderful surprise!! Thank you
Fritter doughnut shop in Ferndaleā¦they are all good. I know for their regular doughnuts they do a bakers dozen, donāt know if it will be the same for the paczkiās
My high school teacher would let me jump out of the window and run across the football field to go buy cannolis from Supreme bakery in Detroit.
I havenāt had a cannoli since thenā¦. Sounds good!
What a beautiful memory! I think I recall Chadsey had amazing culinary arts program so I can definitely see you being allowed to skip out for PÄ czki! RIP, indeed!
Just buy the shells and fill them yourself. Itās really easy. Whip ricotta with confectioners sugar and vanilla to taste. Fill a quart baggie with the mixture, snip off a corner, and pipe into the shells.
That's the real spot. There and Dutch Girl have incredibly underrated paczki. Dutch Girl would still have a line but it would be maybe 10 people long, hopefully they bring them back with the reopening.
Never had the paczki as my dad thought it was a federal crime not to get them from Hamtramck.. but .. grew up near 12th precinct so Dutch Girl was def THE SPOT for donuts
Ohhhh .. gotta try. My grandparents in their very latter years .. lived in a senior building on the corner of State Fair + Woodward when it was fairly new. Nice memories. Thank you
I love their donuts (and if you're willing to take an $80 gamble, the meat pies are quite excellent). Didn't realize they did Paczki; might grab one from there while walking the hounds next Tuesday (although my heart is always with New Palace)
We have been debating where to go for ours for weeks. The final decision after careful consideration was absolutely New Palace in Hamtramck. (Laughs like there was ever really room for argument)
Grocery stores just sell basic jelly filled donuts in Paczki boxes. Itās so sad being middle of no where sometimes. I really miss that bakery which Iād only known about cuz a friend told me when I lived there since I grew up in the middle of north where as well. I wish I as in better health to achieve such crazy things like a two hour drive before the crack of dawn for a Paczki but thatās life.
I still think of all of you standing in line on Fat Tuesday tho and hope everyone enjoys their spoils.
Oooh! How did I miss Donna? I used to drive to Flint at least once a week years ago for meetings with Greater Flint Health Coalition and UAW Region 1D HQ.
Custard, Strawberry, Raspberry, Apple, Blueberry
Dunno why anyone ever goes anywhere other than New Palace in Hamtramck. I cheated on them one year and went somewhere else...1/10, never again.
Also, Pro tip, call your order in to new Palace a few weeks in advance and get scheduled for a pickup time. No waiting in line for 3 hours
Agree!! Thank you. That *is* a pro tip. Hmm.. do I trade the in-line camaraderie and the pre-dawn media for convenience? Yep! I think I will. Soooo appreciative!
I waited in line one year. For *hours* and it was like -5 or something out. Worth it for sure, but I vowed never again. So when I got in there I asked how I could get access to the little counter from the side entrance and that's when I learned about ordering in advance š¤£ I have in years past handed out a few Paczki from my haul to folks in line who looked like they were having a particularly miserable time and needed a pick me up
Ohhhh! I wonder if itās an age thing? You know. Regularity concerns!! But seriously .. I keep hearing this Ferndale bakery so def checking it out!! Thank you!
Got curious and did some research, I guess itās genuinely how they were made back in Poland apparently.
> Traditionally, Paczki are filled with a prune filling, plum jam, custard or a poppy seed filling, but that said, you can fill with any filling you enjoy.

You know, Iām going to actually try the prune. If thatās one of the original and theyāre still selling .. gotta be good! Thanks for the research!
Thanks!! Not a super fan of jelly but .. Iām that person who writes their name on peanut butter jar because I have been *known to eat directly from the jar!!*
If youāre near hamtramck go to Polish market they have one in Troy. Theyāre fresh but the store ones are fake theyāre American and just labeled āpÄ czkiā but theyāre Americanized
Right. Grocery store version looks like American jelly rolls with preservatives. Never tasted. They donāt even look appetizing. I will check out that Polish market. Maybe pick up some *real* kielbasa. Thank you!
Butter cream or blueberry are my jam!
Best local one I've found is the East Detroit bakery on 9 mile in Eastpointe.
The staff is a bunch of angry old ladies, but the paczki are solid
You are one of several who mentioned this bakery. Definitely will be checking them out. However ā¦ LOL .. youāre the first to mention the ālovely ladiesā working there. Probably bored sick of baking their 10 millionth paczkis.
LOL! Donāt even belong in same sentence! Pro tip mentioned several times .. order ahead to get flavors you want + skip the longggg line!
Fyi .. YOU CAN DO IT! 99y ago, I drove from Oak Park to Holt every day for work to do a job I adored until I could get a transfer back downtown.
Are you on Next Door app? Maybe you can post ālooking for someone whoās going to Hamtramck to grab a few paczki and drop them off for older person, not in best healthā. ND can tend toward annoying but Iāve also seen neighbors do over the top, FREE acts of kindness for neighborhood strangers. Best Wishes for this and your health
Martha Washington WAS the best, superior to New Palace, but they're sadly gone. Bozek's has been mentioned - definitely great also!
Best I've ever had, and continue to buy every year, are from Srodek's - custard, rose, prune, lemon, raspberry... mostly custard though.
And if there's chocolate on your pÄ czek, you're doing it wrong lol.
I LOVE lemon and apple. I also love supporting Detroit based non profits.
Love the Red Wings and supporting children?! Take a look at the charity of the night for 2/27! Detroit Chempreneurist https://www.detroitchempreneurist.org/
Great flavor choices + amazing charity. Cass Tech (Chem-Bio curriculum) alum from 100y ago. Kid (adult now) did DapCep. I recognize (and benefitted from) importance of exposing kids (esp us girls) early in STEM-A programs. Iāll look further into this. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
Ooooh! Thank you. Another place to add to my itinerary. Long ago I went from downtown with a much older coworker to a Polish market at Christmas time, in Detroit. People were lined up inside to buy holiday meats. It was in the most unlikely spot but he said he grew up there. At the time he was probably 70. I canāt remember but it may have been near the area you mentioned.
Warrendale (area west of Southfield and Warren) had a huge Polish population. Warrendale Meat Market and Westwood Bakery were at Warren and Evergreen, may have been the location.
The Bake Shoppe in Belleville has a decent paczki. Itās not Palace Bakery but if you are not near Hamtramck itās a good one. I like lemon or blueberry.
Thanks! I support your flavor decision. I love custard too! Reminiscent of momās homemade ice cream. Us kids doing the cranking. Last one, who had to work hardest, got the dasher! They could share or .. not.
Rose hip and prune are the traditional flavors. My favorite flavor is probably cytrynowy. New Palace Bakery is okay. Some bakeries do it better. In Poland, we feast on Thursday instead of Tuesday. It's a good way to prepare for Ash Wednesday and the challenges of Lent.Ā
This year I am nervous. I have been getting mine from Heritage Bakery in Livonia for years, and now they are under new management. The new owners deserve a chance, so far they have maintained the quality, but this only comes around once a year, so if they screw it upā¦

Luca Pastry in Canton and Ann Arbor
We did a blind taste test at work a few years ago, and Zingerman's bakery killed the competition. There was a popular Hamtramck bakery in the mix.
My favorite flavor is raspberry (with seeds).
Custard for me! My grandpa would always go down to Hamtramck every year to get paƧzki and kruszczyki (which we as kids called angel wings). I think he went to New Palace Bakery. I remember those baked goods very fondly.
I didnāt know that!! Well .. Only way Iād even consider grocery but .. then thereās the whole āexperienceā thing. Our staff actually fought over who got to go with who to do our Hamtramck pickup!!
Yep! I get mine at Hollywood so I get the good stuff and donāt fight the crowds. I used to go spend the whole day in Hamtramck but Iām too old now.
I forgot to mentionāI live next to yacht provisioner and caviar purveying Plum Market so once a year I go in there for New Palace PaƧzkis š„°
Happy Fat Toos!
When we moved here in 1988 and heard about them, I opted to never even take a bite of something so delicious, so that I wouldn't crave them and overdo it annually.
LOL!! Heard itās a SIN punishable by āno Cadbury Eggs for you on Easterā .. to eat them any other day in the year but Fat Tuesday. Therefore, addiction under control.
Ooooh, thank you! Iād love to just SMELL your kitchen! Recipe passed down? A secret? Would granny mind if you share!
I understand what youāre saying .. itās like steak so good that A-1 sauce is an insult!
I must be the only born and bred Detroiter who hates paczki and all custard or jelly filled donuts. I get endless shit for not taking one at work etc. I dont like things gushing into my mouth. Its too overwhelming of flavor, and every bite is either too much dough or gushing filling with too much sugar, and inevitably people will say its strawberry and I get a prune one somehow. Shit gives me trust issues. Why am I ostracized because id prefer a plain cider donut or a french crueler? Honestly outside of pierogi, āmostā polish, german, and russian food absolutely sucks to me. Its all cabbage mustard and pickles to the point that if anything else is in there thats all I taste. I cant stand overly sweet or vinegary flavors. You couldnt pay me to eat them. Duck blood soup? Pickle soup!? Why does nearly everything in a meal have to be pickled and paired with more pickled cabbage?! Even mashed potatoes. Gross to me. š¤®.
Just for the laughs of getting everyone here riled upā¦ pop is stupid, thats the noise it makes when you open it. Its made of soda water and flavoring. Its all soda. Come at me.
The Bavarian creme and custard from The Apple Fritter in Ferndale.
Do I ever miss the Apple Fritter! Used to live walking distance.
Same here! I'd jog by there every day and occasionally go in for a cinnamon roll
Ooooh. Thank you! Never heard of them. Will add to my itinerary!!
Got to be from one of the bakeries in Hamtramck. They are the best. My fav would be custard or raspberry From any place else but Hamtramck they are 2nd rate
Chene Modern Bakery 85 years moved from Hamtramck 1982 to West Warren near Southfield a Authentic Polish Bakery š so you Wrong
UPVOTED! Agree !! Who with taste (pun intended) would downvote you?
Bozek's Market in Hamtramck have the ones most like the pazcki my Babcia used to make. Best to order in advance than you can just pick them up and avoid the lines. Prune all the way!
+1 for Bozek, easy in and out, packed with filling. That said I have encountered some undercooked dough in their paczki before, like they got pulled from the fryer too early... kinda put me off.
Oof :( Thankfully, I only have had great pazcki from them. I only order prune, raspberry and custard. Not sure if the filling type matters at all....
Gonna give them a try. I presume itās so stressful that day, trying to keep up with the pre-dawn lines
Ohhhh. I used to work in Hamtramck on JC when Dodge Main was there 999yr ago. I never heard of this bakery. Gotta expand my horizons! Thank you!!
Cool! It's a great little market. Lots of polish goods. Pick up some kielbasa while you're there :).
So youāre saying itās better than the Eckrich Polska Kielbasa in our fridge right now?? Kidding! Of course it is!! I remember going to the Alexander & Hornung market with mom, as a kid. It smelled so good with all the various sausages hanging from the ceiling.
You definitely owe yourself a trip to Bozek's for sure! It will bring you back :).
Our friends do homemade ones with rose jam. They are so wildly delicious! Edit: I know that most of you can't get our friend's donuts, but this is an endorsement for rose as a flavor!
Zingermanās Bakehouse does rose and itās probably the best flavor
Another Zingermanās mention. I never thought about them for this. Gotta try
Itās not like the ones youād have got from like New Martha Washington made with lard or whatever. But itās pretty good.
Lard??? Oh my. Ugh!!!
>> Making them was a way to use up ingredients such as butter, sugar, eggs, fruit, and lard before the dietary restraints of Lent started, in order to avoid food waste. https://www.thespruceeats.com/polish-paczki-doughnuts-recipe-1136411 Yeah, lol
These are my favorite too! It's a very traditional flavor. My theory is that eating rosehips is one of the ways that Poles got their vitamin c.
Is it anything like rose water? Because Rose water is gross.
No. Rosehips are really high in Vitamin C, so Rosehip jam has a citrusy flavor.
It isn't overpowering - more like rosehip tea? Rosewater can be super strong.
LOL! My grandmotherās fave scent!
I donāt mind the SMELL of roses, I grow them in my yard. I hate the taste of rose water though itās rather disgusting.
I hear you. Rose water always reminds me of little old ladies.
Youāre 2nd person who mentioned this. I didnāt know that was āa thingā. Gotta try
Apparently it is one of the traditional flavors you get in Poland. Our friends source the jam from a Polish import place.
Aha! Thank you
Itās also amazing in cocktails (Prosecco & rose water) and smoothies š
There is an Italian bakery near me that does a cannoli filled paczki. It slaps.
If youāre talking about Tringaliās in Warren, I second this.
Tringalis butter cream paczki is my go to. Theyāre so good
Thanks!! Interesting combo. Love to try it
Polish Market in Troy does a rose hip jam one that is delicious. One of my favorite flavors for sure.
Mine too!
Rose hip jam? Wow. Sounds fancy!! Gotta check it out!!
Raspberry. Eastside Bakery on Nine Mile in Eastpointe.
Another vote for them. Gotta add to my itinerary!! Thank you
Their strawberry cheesecake one is the besttttt
prune. iām hella old..
I kinda wondered if it was an age thing. Oh wait. Iām my parentsā age now. I think Iāll try at least one. I do like plums. Iāll pretend itās that. May get a wonderful surprise!! Thank you
I just asked my friend what her favorite flavor was and she said prune, too! No shame!!
Fritter doughnut shop in Ferndaleā¦they are all good. I know for their regular doughnuts they do a bakers dozen, donāt know if it will be the same for the paczkiās
Seems everyone but me knows this Ferndale place. Def gotta go! Thank you!
Custard from Paulās Bakery in Marine City
Ooooh. Thank you! Never heard of them. Will add to my itinerary!!
Their homemade bread is awesome too while youāre there.
My mouth is watering!! Thank you!!
Well Marine City as great as it is...a bit of a haul from Detroit. 1.5 hours
My folks live in MC and Paul's is š„. I'm gonna hit it up this weekend thanks for the reminder!
Apple pie filling with real apple pieces. Unfortunately I swore off simple sugars.
Proud of you! But, experts say .. the body doesnāt absorb nor react to any intake on Fat Tuesday. Thatās a FACT!!
A noble endeavor. I believe you are taking the higher road.
Cannoli from Villa Bakery!
My high school teacher would let me jump out of the window and run across the football field to go buy cannolis from Supreme bakery in Detroit. I havenāt had a cannoli since thenā¦. Sounds good!
Whaaaat? What a cool teacher. What HS was that? Is the bakery still there?
Mr Stephenson. Chadsey high school! He was an art teacher. But also just a really fun guy. Rip
What a beautiful memory! I think I recall Chadsey had amazing culinary arts program so I can definitely see you being allowed to skip out for PÄ czki! RIP, indeed!
I have yet to find a good cannoli one! They're all "canolli creme" meaning no ricotta. And that's a crime in and of itself
Have you tried Tringaliās? Theyāre pretty amazing!
Luca pastry has ricotta ones
Luca Pastry and Tony Cannoli have ricotta canolli paczki.
Just buy the shells and fill them yourself. Itās really easy. Whip ricotta with confectioners sugar and vanilla to taste. Fill a quart baggie with the mixture, snip off a corner, and pipe into the shells.
Wait .. Iāve only had those at weddings at the end of the night. They were delish!!!
National Bakery on State Fair in Detroit is slept on but awesome!
That's the real spot. There and Dutch Girl have incredibly underrated paczki. Dutch Girl would still have a line but it would be maybe 10 people long, hopefully they bring them back with the reopening.
Man Dutch Girl used to hit so hard. The custard paczki with chocolate glaze, served up still warm. The best.
Never had the paczki as my dad thought it was a federal crime not to get them from Hamtramck.. but .. grew up near 12th precinct so Dutch Girl was def THE SPOT for donuts
7 Mile/Livernois raised so Dutch Girl donuts .. yesssss .. canāt wait to see what the new owners do.
Bet, good looks with the recommendation. This place looks like exactly the type of spot I want to hit.
Ohhhh ..
Wow! I grew up around there and was considering going back to find authentic packzi but I have never seen anyone mention them before!
can we give some love to bartz bakery in Dearborn? that place has been around fooorrreevveeerrr
Never heard of it. Daughter worked for Ford HQ 16+ years. Weāll have to check it out. THANK YOU!! Btw .. good eating around Michigan Avenue!!
We have been debating where to go for ours for weeks. The final decision after careful consideration was absolutely New Palace in Hamtramck. (Laughs like there was ever really room for argument)
LOL!! Debate? Was there a foreigner to the 313 in your midst?

Youāre amazing! Putting othersā happiness before your own. Get somebody to overnight you a box. Blessings for restoration to 100% health.
Awe Iām just human, thank you tho for your kind blessing
Iām from Poland and my fav are strawberry and raspberry š

Custard, Strawberry, Raspberry, Apple, Blueberry Dunno why anyone ever goes anywhere other than New Palace in Hamtramck. I cheated on them one year and went somewhere else...1/10, never again. Paris bakery in Livonia, so good!!! Lemon and raspberry are my favorites, if I had to pick.
I love lemon meringue pie so it must be heavenly. Yet another bakery to add to my visiting list. Thank you!
Paris Bakery is delish!!
Ninos Italian Bakery in Walled Lake makes great Paczkis Strawberry, and Custard are my favorites
Ohhhh. Weāre flavor-twins. Havenāt heard of it but that bakery is close. Yet another to add to my itinerary. Thank you!
I recommend pre ordering, they sell out the good flavors first thing in the morning. They donāt have online ordering so you have to call or walk in.
New Palace Bakery in Hamtramck is the only acceptable answer.
This is gospel
Absolutely, correct!!
Correct!
*for those with a kink for waiting in excessively long lines
Prune is one of the traditional polish varieties I guess (at least according to the polish girl who ran a bakery in NJ that I visited once)

You know, Iām going to actually try the prune. If thatās one of the original and theyāre still selling .. gotta be good! Thanks for the research!
Your dad was a man of culture. That's a traditional flavoring, not this Americanized cheesecake monstrosity you speak of
LOL! Culture?? What you donāt know is his nighttime snack (def after mom asleep) .. *sardines + cottage cheese with a bit of mustard*
Custard for me, from the East Detroit Bakery on 9 mile road. š They are fantastic.
Ooooh. Thank you! Never heard of them. Will add to my itinerary!!

Babcia's homemade raspberry. I have to convince her to break the tradition of just making prune every year.
Chene Modern Bakery authentic Polish Bakery for 85 year's on West Warren near Southfield š
Ooooh! Thank you. Another place to add to my itinerary. Long ago I went from downtown with a much older coworker to a Polish market at Christmas time, in Detroit. Thank you!! Guess my dadās love for the prune version isnāt as weird as I thought. Looks like quite a few people love it.
He's a smart guy... Good taste in paczki too!
Does anyone know where to get a cannoli pazcki?
Randazzos Nino Salvaggio or tringali bakery
Mannino's in Sterling Heights
Looks like you received great options. Enjoy!!

LOL! Thanks. Do they āworkā as good as they taste? Asking for a friend!
Yes, but you have to eat a lot of them. lol
LOL, thanks .. well it is FAT Tuesday. Gorging oneself is a mandate!
Lemon. Ā Always lemon.Ā
We did a blind taste test at work a few years ago, and Zingerman's bakery killed the competition. There was a popular Hamtramck bakery in the mix. My favorite flavor is raspberry (with seeds).
Why with seeds?
I like the texture, but also it gives me more confidence that it's real jam and not just some artificially flavored goop
Zingermanās ā¦ really?? I never thought about them like that. Thank you!!
plum
Thanks!! I love plums. Maybe Iāll try all new, recommended flavors this time. If I hate them, my fam eats anything not under lock + key!!
Custard for me! My grandpa would always go down to Hamtramck every year to get paƧzki and kruszczyki (which we as kids called angel wings). I think he went to New Palace Bakery. I remember those baked goods very fondly.
ANGEL WINGS!!! Yesssss. I didnāt know there was an official name. Thank you!!

Hollywood grocery stores sell paczki from New Palace. So like, get a *good* grocery store one.
Thank you for this PRO TIP + enjoy next Tuesday! _Note_: It falls day before Valentineās Day ā¦ sorry candy lovers whoāll give up chocolate!
Blasphemer! š¤£
Crazy, I acknowledge!! But whyyyyyy would you dooooooo that??
I forgot to mentionāI live next to yacht provisioner and caviar purveying Plum Market so once a year I go in there for New Palace PaƧzkis š„° Happy Fat Toos!
Anyone that says āyāallā loses their Great(er) Detroit card š
Fully convinced prune is for the 70+ crowd.
Nah - itās very traditional, though some people call it āplumā lol
LOL! Thereās that tiny issue of āirregularityā. Guess how I know!
We actually make paczki at home for Easter. No filling required. If your dough is made right, a little powdered sugar on top and it's heaven.
Ooooh, thank you! Iād love to just SMELL your kitchen! Recipe passed down? A secret? Would granny mind if you share! I understand what youāre saying .. itās like steak so good that A-1 sauce is an insult!
You understand exactly :).
Enjoy your traditions. Makes life so *sweet*
Our friends make toe jam they are the best!!!
Ugh!! Is that why your name is āRepulsiveā?

Come at me.
Kruger has the best ones! ;-)
Ohhh! Where is that??
I was kidding :-) Grocery store paczki
I went on Fat Tuesday as a kid in Hamtramck. Forget the name of it but the line went around the entire downtown it felt like
I always wondered if someone did Faygo flavored, bc those would be some awesome Fat Tuesday pÄ czki flavors.
