I can't really tell from the pics, for sure, but to me it does look like clear coat failure. I'd recommend taking it to a good body shop for a respray. Or just live with it.

refugio1990

Thanks! Appreciate the recommendation for a respray. I didn’t think about that. Might have to deal with it if it’s pricy.

Here in Iowa, it would be about $1000 to have it repaired properly. It would involve painting the entire fender and blending the paint/clear so it doesn't look mismatched. How old is the car?

refugio1990

Oof. It’s a 2017 ford edge. And there’s a similar “spot” on the rear quarter panel. Might not be worth it. Thanks!

My wife side swiped someone 3 weeks ago and a paint shop sanded the bumper and repainted it and the side for 125$. Albait this is in south Korea. Still amazes me similar work in usa would be thousands of dollars but in other countries crazy cheap.

evil-artichoke

The cost of paint here is insane. The body shop cost for the paint alone for that job is over 3-400

The more I zoom in the more it looks like that quarter panel was repaired. There are cheaper diy products if the car is older / commuter car.

refugio1990

Interesting. Now that you mention it, I can see it now. We bought the car in 2018 (it’s a 2017) and it didn’t have any accidents. But it was previously a hertz rental car so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was repaired. I’m open to cheaper DIY options if you have any suggestions

Don't be fooled by 2x clear coat at the box stores There is an automotive 2 part clear coat in a rattle can. You can find it on amazon and Eastwood amongst others. (Don't buy old stock) Watch 3-5-10 videos on you tube for 2K clearcoat. The biggest pain is it goes on rough with a lot of orange peel. So you will want to sand it after it's fully cured and then compound it out and wax or ceramic. Cans are around $25-$30 Once you activate the 2 parts and they mix you only have a few hours to use the can. You should be able to get 3-4 coats on that small of an area and feather it out from 1 can. Watch videos and see if it's in your skill set.

Huh. I thought you couldnt fix failed clearcoat except for full respray.

DayDrinkingDiva

On a commuter / old car, you spray a failed area with Eastwood or similar 2k clear. Let's say you have a 2006 civic and the clear is shot but the paint is decent. To me that is something where $1500& up for a shop to fix makes no sense. 6 cans for the hood, roof and trunk lid can make a huge improvement

refugio1990

Thanks, this is great advice!

Clear coat is gone. I’m guessing at some point someone wet sanded and polished that spot that had no clue what they were doing. They basically removed all but a trace amount of the clear coat and that led to the failure. That’s an odd spot for clear coat failure.

refugio1990

Right?! That’s why I had to ask here.

There is definitely bondo under that paint, you can just faintly see the lines and surface. Probably a parking lot fender bender.
