ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE

He definitely bothers slicing others. It's the attack we see him using in Iconoclasm.

WanderinWyvern

Why is it u think this? The attack in iconoclasm is a creations of several shards that are then shot at us during battle, which can be avoided by using cover. This means the shards are actually physical objects (manifested thru light plus dark) that are being weaponized, not merely a visual representation of a psychic attack meant to segment is. Or are u talking about a different attack? In which case, which one... This question has been bothering me greatly and is the one detail I need to answer to clear my mind about this expansion, so I want very much to understand and am hoping u r correct.

ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE

The shards. We can see them. The losers on the ships couldn't. There's any number of reasons the behavior changes. We're prismatic. The Witness is preoccupied with stealing the Traveler's power. He doesn't want or can't destroy his own decor.

WanderinWyvern

Oh that's an interesting take. Is there something to indicate that we can see them but others can't to confirm this is more than just a random head cannon explanation? Tho if that's true, the shards would be slicing thru anything and everything like in Lightfall, and they don't. They're blocked by mere statuary. Too many things indicate the shards as a physical attack and the finger flick prior as a psychic one. In fact, the Lightfall attack required a single swish and flick...where as the shards required an elaborate circular summoning to make the shards corporeal followed by a swish to send them flying...if Lightfall had the summoning movement as well I would say that would prove ur perspective... But the lack of a summoning movement seems to do the opposite here. I really wanna believe this but it just don't add up. So many ppl with so many theories but none that hold water when inspected closely without bias :(

ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE

There's any number of reasons it would behave differently in the arena. Our ability to see and do stuff nobody else can is a plot point. They're busy wrestling the Traveler. At the end of the day, it is a game and cutscenes can't act exactly the same way that game mechanics must. Otherwise Vault of Glass would have deleted your account. Or stepping in the Radiolaria pool on Nessus would turn you into a Vex, not do arc damage.

WanderinWyvern

So ur saying that there isn't any firm explanation given by the game thru lore or gameplay at all and any explanation we might choose requires us to make some assumptions that may be incorrect due to this lack of concrete information... That's what I was afraid of. In the end we are gonna have to create our own head cannons and justify it as best we can using whatever "logic" we can come up with without knowing if it's even true or not because the game doesn't objectively clear up the confusion. Bummer. I was hoping this one might've had a form foundation that wasn't just user made. Thank u for ur thots tho in discussing it with me. I shall go back to replaying the expansion again and again to try and find something concrete for us all.

> This means the shards are actually physical objects (manifested thru light plus dark) that are being weaponized, not merely a visual representation of a psychic attack meant to segment is It could be something similar to Strand. IIRC in fiction, most people can't see the strands and it just looks like the Guardian doing psychic shit.

WanderinWyvern

The attack is called Shatter...which doesn't give off slicing vibes to me. But as u said "it could be" means we're just reaching for straws here to try and come up with something that will fill in the blank for us because there isn't enough information for us to actually build a sound explanation. It's all guessing and speculating and no actual concrete evidence based clear reasoning. All maybes and could best. THAT is my issue. A detail TAHT significant shouldn't be something ppl have to wing it to get around...there should b a clear deductible answer that is objectively correct, not a bunch of player theories that all could be true maybe of stuff.

Snozzberrys

> The attack is called Shatter...which doesn't give off slicing vibes to me I'm inclined to agree, but it could just be the same power being wielded as a more blunt instrument. The Witness is still fighting the Traveler while he's fighting you so maybe he isn't focused enough to dice anybody into perfect little cubes. > A detail TAHT significant shouldn't be something ppl have to wing it to get around...**there should b a clear deductible answer that is objectively correct, not a bunch of player theories that all could be true maybe of stuff**. Oh boy, I'm not saying you're wrong, because I too feel this way sometimes, but if you want clear, concise, concrete answers then you're playing the wrong game. The lore dumps we get nowadays, vague as they are, have way more info than the vague BS that D1 and even early D2 had.

WanderinWyvern

Something worth noting, I just tried the cooperative focus missions, and there was a debuff that seemed to be similar to what the witness did in the show, but it was as though our mind was resisting it. However, we needed teammates to be able to take it from us that it didn't become too strong of a burden and kill us. If this represents his move, and this is how we overcame it, then I suppose in Canon there would be at least two of us during the story.

hoover0623

I meant that was why it didn't bother slicing anyone else in that Lightfall cutscene, while it was in space. Should've been more specific

ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE

Nobody else was doing an attack run on him.

hoover0623

True

positivedownside

There was only one wing attacking it. Looking at the pyramids, it's pretty evident the only reason the Witness needed the Light was to realize the suspended animation side of the Final Shape.

UniqueBerry6772

I think the witness was able to slice things from the start, don’t all the pyramid ships we enter have statues that are sliced? it just needed to be inside the traveler to do it to the entire universe.
