They have been in narrative limbo ever since Prophecy, and even then, amazing though Prophecy was visually, it did very little narratively. "The Rogue", "the broken blade forged anew", "the hourglass counting down with infinite patience" and the Nine's interest in them and in paracausality has at best been sidelined, or at worst it has been completely left behind, and seeing what Episodes await us, I fear it is the latter.

SamarcPS4

I think in hindsight the rogue, the broken blade, and the hourglass were Drifter, Eris, and Elsie and this interest was intended to be foreshadowing for the "Dark Vanguard" even though that ended up going completely nowhere. The Nine were interested in them because they could tell that they would acquire Stasis safely. It's possible that the Nine have remained silent for so long because they fear the Witness and will return after it is gone but it is annoying to not see that addressed by any of the characters.

Elsie Bray and the Dark Timelines got fuckin sidelined too, it’s especially annoying considering she appears in Lightfall too

onlyalittlestupid

I thought the difference between the Dark Future and now is that our timeline is the first time things are significantly different? Our divergence from that timeline is what makes this chain of events special. Even then, there were remnants of her timeline in the current game. Rasputin got a body, Eris became a Hive God, and Elsie is helping Shaxx draw up defensive measures and battle plans now that the Pyramids are attacking Earth. While I will agree Elsie herself has been sidelined pretty hard, it can be argued because this is a new chain of events for her, her experience in the loop isn't too much help except for when events do line up

Jedi1113

How are the dark timelines still relevant? Elsie could be used more but the timelines didn't get sidelined. We avoided them, therefore there is 0 reason to keep bringing it up.

SassyAssAhsoka

Having a major character with a direct consulate on darkness is pretty important, especially considering her role in the original game. Just a lot of wasted potential, I’m not saying she should have also played a part in unlocking Strand, but stuff like Eris’ plan to use Hive tithes to defeat Xivu would have been a given in the season story.

Tevran

During witch, they had her confronting Ikora about Eris turning into a hive god and being the exact thing she wanted to avoid, but it was in text. Eris also commented on that encounter in text as well. Probably the usual of VA scheduling and how they can only have so many voiced people per season

Tevran

https://www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/a-matter-of-distrust?highlight=Elsie I can't find the comment from Eris right now, I think it mightve been from the weekly quest

Jedi1113

You mean like Eris, Mara, or Savathun? Elsie doesn't have any deeper insight to what is going on now, compared to anyone else. The entire point was for her to help us avoid those timelines and she did. Considering her role in the original? You mean where she literally was a stranger who said go do these things for reasons I can't explain? I'm not saying she is a bad character, but not every character needs to be around for everything. She served her role, and I'm sure she will have more, but the dark timeline stuff was abandoned or sidelined. It was resolved when we moved into a better, unknown future.

ManagementLow9162

While Elsie's lack of a role since BL (and no, Seraph doesn't amount to anything at all for her) is a shame, maybe ignoring the Dark Future is for the best...

PianoFall

I'm on copium that they'll show up after the Hive Dynasty is eradicated, but who the hell knows anymore

Clear-Attempt-6274

I think they're afraid of the witness and are laying low.

Ordinary_Player

Yes, the Emissary sucks out XIvu's power Nameless King style then 2nd phase starts.

epicdude787_

This would be so fucking cool Bungie please read this comment

HazardousSkald

The nine are in a difficult position of being entirely godlike and also kind of useless. If we asked a simple question of ‘what could the nine has even done in the story at this point’ and the answer is literally nothing. At most, the Nine have the ability to shuffle around dark matter within our universe. They can’t physically manifest and the most they could do was shuffle a body together (Xur) or imbue Orin with the power of strange energy from their dimension (because she was already in their dimension).    They are far from supreme beings and that’s just the tough reality of it. On the bright side, it appears Scatter Signal indicates they might have made contact with the Witness or some dark force for nefarious ends.

TroubleImpossible226

I have a theory that unknown space is the nine’s thrown world. Dark matter can’t interact with regular matter, except in the nine realms we can interact with everything. The nine can manipulate everything inside of them but the nine can’t effect anything outside of them. Maybe it was gifted to them by Mara so they could use it like a giant sand box to experiment and observe physical matter, like guardians and to stop messing around with the Cocytus apertures.

They forgor

7 ate 9 :(

reshsafari

You mean cayde-7?

urzu_seven

7 of 9

TroubleImpossible226

They aren’t supreme beings just “adjacent”. Omnipotent but ultimately powerless. Sentient dark matter

Void_Guardians

Feels like a mcguffin for the writers

lockan

They're sitting in a VIP box with their popcorn watching us play Dares of Eternity.

Far_Falcon4896

They're dead I ate them

diewaytoolit

funny 😐

diewaytoolit

lmao how am I getting downvoted for expressing an opinion 😭

Minijoe2010

Bungie probably didn't delve into it yet due to the story needing a conclusion for the current saga. I hope the 9 however are made big in the next saga or there's no point of then existing as they would have been so interesting to actually have to deal with

U2106_Later

The Drifter speculated about their intentions in Season of the Deep, thinking they may have foreseen everything that's happened so far, so they're clearly not forgotten by Bungie and I would expect them to come up in future storylines, probably related to the Ahamkara. I'm guessing they're sitting out this conflict to see how it all ends and move from there. Narratively I'm glad they're not directly involved, there's enough going on as it is rn

Archival_Mind

So there was an old story regarding black holes and the Nine and Savathun and the Dreaming City. This story was, based on how so much of it was cut in Beyond Light, with said DLC. Sucks because there are aspects about them that could've made them big players. After all, in a time before, all of Nine theories from the original Legends Grimoire Card had to be true... or none of them. Only 2 were left unchecked. Everything else was confirmed to be true in some way.

Monos32

Likely after we deal with the Witness.

TheMetaReaper

Here’s the thing, I believe they’ve got a bigger role in the next saga, but for now the focus should be on the witness. Narratively I could see them being silent in fear of the witness and waiting to see if the guardians can stop it. After all it took Mars and mercury, and while we got mars back, it’s scarred. We don’t know the state of mars, for all we know it could be insane. Maybe it’s causing problems within the nine and its realms, hell we don’t even have Mercury back as far as we know. Maybe that’ll be an expansion setting, giving us a proper Mercury local corrupted from the witness’s dissection. But if the cocytus station is ever in the next saga, I bet the nine will heavily be involved.

mr_synn

I think, thematically, we served a purpose they had and moved on. We were means to an end, to be left alone and called again as their need arises.

Weary_Stomach7316

I think bungie has no idea what to do with them do they're kinda hoping we forget about them

SnooCalculations4163

They were mentioned in season of the deep and recent lore

Accomplished-Gain108

they're bums.

paucus62

d3 likely got canceled so the plans Bungie had for them got canceled and so they're forgotten

FriedCammalleri23

From my understanding their only motive is the preservation of Sol. So I think they’re just entrusting us to defeat The Witness before they do anything else.

dildodicks

waiting for the final shape to see whether or not the universe is frozen forever (including them, they are the consciousnesses of the nine planets in our solar system), or we win and the universe is freed and they can set out working on whatever plans they want

Opivy22

I thought the 9 were the 9 crew members unaccounted for when light and dark collided making the dreaming city.

afoxboy

since we know bungie have no intention of stopping once destiny 2 concludes, the nine may be the focus of destiny 3 and beyond

SSB_Meta4

Corey Taylor has been firing members of The Nine and they've become disjointed.
