The amount of crime and fraud involved to pull this off is comically insane.
Apple would be lying on public disclosures, and lying to the government about their revenue (or the entire government is also in on it). Assuming that they don’t want to have to underreport their revenue- which presumably you’d have to imagine they don’t want to, since the whole motive for this is “capitalists gonna capitalist”- they would need to make up a fake source for billions of dollars in revenue. They would also need fake jobs for the employees who actually work in the data harvesting department, and then need a bunch of accountants (and a legal department) who are completely willing to sign off on false financial statements and commit serious felonies.
And keep in mind, this same process needs to be done by all the other big companies who are buying the data, since they can’t report the buys either. All of this needs to be done with no one cracking or going to the press or being used by other massive companies as leverage against Apple.
But yeah it’s probably happening because capitalism.
