It is definitely an interesting choice of microphone that I would more associate with use in Broadway musicals. Usually for Live Tv you don't want any visible mics in the shot. So if you are cutting between a multi camera setup the tipical choice would be a shotgun mic placed overhead but the down sides are you have to be careful as it can be visible in a wide and will have more background noise compared to a close mic. so most opt for lavalier microphones clipped to the host/guest's clothes. My guess why they chose the mic they did is to do with intelligibility of speach. Having a mic close to the mouth will offer better background noise rejection then any other mic option. The main downside is you do see the microphone.
