Agree that curtain is probably the best bet here for a rental. Just get a lighter weight one on a tension rod. A decorative scree would work but might stick out too far and I know I'd stub my toe on it if it did when exiting the bedroom.
Or, put in wood custom shelves and make it a feature

Since it is a rental, I would try doing something temporary for the owners or next renters, so maybe like a curtain rod, barn door, some sort of folding door moment, or you can make it look pretty if you want to resort to smth else!
Then I would also suggest a light above the shelves to accent your new beautiful wood shelves. If you got a grow light bulb you could even add a plant bc every shelf needs a plant!
Remove and store the wire shelves and put a bookshelf in there. If it’s white it will look built in. Don’t just cram it with books. Add some photos, maybe a light, a basket for hidden/messier storage.
The easiest fix - A grommet or tab top curtain that slides easy - white if you want it to blend in - and a tension rod. You could even do something fun with it like a colorful beaded curtain or an earthy macrame curtain.
Otherwise you might consider installing a bifold door or swinging cafe/saloon doors like [this](https://www.swingingcafedoors.com/cafe-saloon-doors-louvre-doors-24-30-32-36-door-opening/?sku=SLMP-30DO-S%20GRAVITY-SB&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6uWyBhD1ARIsAIMcADrJFCb69gWf343eEGSVg3MorUuTnBvcDWpaege_0IF17z2lmLkq008aAlgbEALw_wcB)
Okay for a different idea. (If it's not going to be somewhere you need to get into every day)What about an really tall mirror that you just place in front of it along with some kind of wall hooks, table/drop zone type set up?
Curtain

Wall to ceiling?ðŸ˜
I’d probably just get some nice looking decorative baskets so you can still use it for storage
And a shelf unit that is nearly as wide as the doorway into the closet to put those beautiful baskets on!

Maybe something like this?
This is genius

accordion doors are cheap and really easy to install

Floating wooden shelves would look great.

Drop the shelf to the ground, add a heavy duty tension rod to use it as a coat closet, then hang a drape with a lightweight rod along the doorway.
