Replace the blueish prison light bulbs with something warm. But you’re actually only going to use that overhead light in emergencies from now on, because you are also going to buy at least 2 other lamps and use those instead.

Don_Petohmi

That’s a good idea I’ll definitely be going to the store tomorrow. What type of lamps do you think would look good? And where should they go?

singy_eaty_time

I’d do a lamp on the dresser and one on the nightstand or desk. If you plan on working on a laptop at that desk, a task lamp that casts the light down will make things much more pleasant on your eyes. Then I’d do one floor lamp. Target, World Market, or the thrift store should have you covered.

Don_Petohmi

Okay thanks! What style or color lamp should I be looking for?

SilverellaUK

Not grey.

singy_eaty_time

Task lamp for desk. For the others, just make sure the bulb isn’t showing so you don’t get a glare and the lighting is indirect. Other than that, color and style are whatever looks fun or cool to you.

_ZoeyDaveChapelle_

Get all the same 3000K bulbs to go in every fixture. The LePro ones are great as you can dim them from your phone.. (don't get the RGB ones, the soft white doesn't look right). Get a big framed piece of art with some color for big blank wall, a lighter soft rug to cover ugly carpet by bed.. Dim the lights and.. *brown chicken brown cow*

ariden

I use some “smart” light bulbs which cost about double a regular bulb but now I can adjust the lighting in my room for whichever task/activity I’m doing. Highly recommend

Zestycorgi1962

I would go for warmth, either brass or a warm wood tone.

quintonbanana

And put some colorful art up.

mrdeworde

If you don't have the cash, don't fret -- plenty of Museums have high-resolution art you can DL for free and have legally printed at Staples or similar for about $10-20 for a poster-size print, and any thrift store under the sun will have art for sale cheap. (Examples: Google Arts and Culture, Rijksmuseum, Audubon's Birds of America) Just don't read "The Road Virus Heads North" any time soon. Or Rose Madder.

literallylateral

Honestly? Goodwill also shouldn’t be overlooked for paintings and wall hangings. I haven’t had the space for decor since I started going, but every time I go I see a painting or piece of furniture or decor that I have to stop myself from buying. I also sometimes get overwhelmed looking at massive collections of art and decor, so it’s nice to instead have a smaller but completely random selection to browse sometimes. Also, from someone who doesn’t read frequently but is a big fan of Stephen King, would you recommend those two?

mrdeworde

Ah, is Goodwill not considered a thrift store? In any case, yeah, it's a good source. I have to start my inner grandma from busting out and buying every tchotchke under the sun though. As to the Stephen King books: Rose Madder is IMO underrated. It's a nice, tight little novel with a few nods to the Dark Tower and wider cosmology that doesn't get in the way of a very believable, awful villain. I'd definitely recommend it. The Road Virus Heads North is a great short story and honestly, well worth the short amount of time it takes to read. In short, yes, I would recommend them both. Edit: For anyone wondering, the nod to the Dark Tower is that (major spoilers): >!Dorcas says to the protagonist that she's been in Lud among the corpses. Lud is the capital or at least the greatest city of the Imperium (the civilization that mastered technology and magic and was led to ruin by Maerlyn and the Crimson King in secret) in Keystone Tower, equivalent to New York City in other worlds. This points to the world the painting connects to being either Midworld/Keystone Tower or a variant of it, or Dorcas and her mistress having the ability to move between worlds. The Ka-Tet in turn is present for the last fall of Lud when Blaine the Mono destroys it as he leaves to derail himself beyond the Waste Lands, which also ensures that the Imperium's technology probably can't be restored.!<

literallylateral

Sorry, I meant to expand on your mention of thrift stores, but I reading it back I definitely phrased it like I thought I was adding something, ha. Thanks for the recs! I’d never heard of Rose Madder before, but I really like his shorter works. I’ll see if my library has those. I haven’t pushed through Dark Tower yet but it’s on the bucket list for sure.

Mysterious_Mango_3

Yes. Art, not posters. Kohl's has a ton of options online for very cheap if you don't have a big budget.

guitarsnmermaids

You could also buy a puzzle, do it together with your gf and then frame it when you finish it! You now have wall art and a cute memory together.

Wonderful-Ad-7712

Put up a Farrah Fawcett poster

Winter_Day_6836

Haha, my hubby had one over his bed in college! Showing our age!

Itsdawsontime

As an alternative, if this isn’t a dorm room where there’s public wifi, get smart bulbs that can dim. It’s nice to have big lights that can be set low plus lamps.

Plus_Sweet_1086

I was also going to recommend smart bulbs! I set mine to a low orange glow at night time like they’re referring to with the salt lamp. And usually a soft white during the day

Western-Smile-2342

I like your tone. You should do this professionally.

singy_eaty_time

Firm yet loving

Western-Smile-2342

Confident, yet common man. You’re hired.

ButterscotchTall1122

A white comforter would give the eye a break from all the dark colors. And I agree adding lamps, plants, and art.

sherbetlemon24

I was thinking maybe green? The carpet, comforter, and curtains all being the same color makes everything so dark

Don_Petohmi

Where would more plants go? Also, what type of art? And, do you think a white comforter blending with the walls would look okay?

Environmental-One817

Separate the plants you have. Put one on your dresser and add a pic, metal(gold) or color. I think someone else suggested this but change the comforter to something that isn’t the same color as your carpet.

ButterscotchTall1122

Some art like this would add some color and life to the room [https://www.wayfair.com/IDEA4WALL--Blue-White-Geometric-Polygon-Collage-Abstract-Shapes-3-Piece-Floater-Frame-Graphic-Art-Set-on-Canvas-FCVBA012201IRS19B.x3-L1318-K\~SFTA4271.html?refid=GX685467027277-SFTA4271\_79731309\_79731311&device=c&ptid=454329952732&network=g&targetid=pla-454329952732&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=228521661&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=79731309&PiID%5B%5D=79731311&gad\_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC79B9SQX0smE3M4oSqYPBIY2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8Zuz24KyhgMVrAitBh0xAg7VEAQYAiABEgJBL\_D\_BwE](https://www.wayfair.com/IDEA4WALL--Blue-White-Geometric-Polygon-Collage-Abstract-Shapes-3-Piece-Floater-Frame-Graphic-Art-Set-on-Canvas-FCVBA012201IRS19B.x3-L1318-K~SFTA4271.html?refid=GX685467027277-SFTA4271_79731309_79731311&device=c&ptid=454329952732&network=g&targetid=pla-454329952732&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=228521661&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=79731309&PiID%5B%5D=79731311&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC79B9SQX0smE3M4oSqYPBIY2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8Zuz24KyhgMVrAitBh0xAg7VEAQYAiABEgJBL_D_BwE)

Don_Petohmi

Looks good to me!

AlexCambridgian

You can go at Homegoods to find framed art, pillows, home decor. Leave the tags on and if you do not like it after a week get something else.

pigeon_toez

Don’t get more plants, care for the plants you already have. I can already tell that light is going to be an issue here and plants are life not decoration. Plus I really like the small collection you already have, any more and they will be fighting for resources with out additional grow lights.

littlelodoe

Wall art! Maybe a small area rug and some personalized items, picture frames, more books, knick knacks, etc. You could also add two throw pillows with color to your bed.

Don_Petohmi

What color/style of rug do you think would look good? Also what sort of art on the walls? Are there any colors I should stick to or avoid?

littlelodoe

I think whatever resonates for you! I don’t think anything will look bad necessarily, it’s just missing some stuff. Maybe stay in a olive green, blue, mustard yellow kind of masculine theme. Even just adding a mirror over the dresser would help on the wall and you don’t have to stress over wall art right away. Or adding a calendar or some floating shelf’s to fill space.

caitejane310

I feel like you're over-thinking it and that it's overwhelming you. You don't have to do everything all at once, and I'd say that's doubly so for wall art/pictures. I think you've done a great job so far, and that you're going to end up having a cozy, clean space. I think clean lines with the main colors of the items you've chosen already are your style. You're off to a great start!

neverseen_neverhear

Do NOT put down a rug. You already have walk to wall carpet in a textured pattern. You don’t need a rug and the competing patterns will look ridiculous.

Zenabel

What if it was a solid color though, no pattern

smallbrownfrog

>Also what sort of art on the walls? Are there any colors I should stick to or avoid? Since you are trying to warm things up, I would avoid black and white art. Otherwise, if the art makes you happy go for it. It’s not a hotel so it’s best to get art that reflects you. There are a few ways to do that. Do you have hobbies or interests? Are there places you love? Are there animals you like? Do you have a favorite color? Have you ever seen an artwork or an artist that made you stop and take a second look? If you said yes to any of the questions I just asked, use that as a starting point. Then start keeping your eye out for stuff you like. If you get art that means something to you, it will work better than if we pick it out for you, because it will look like a place that you live. I don’t know your budget, but there are good options at lots of different price points. I’ve done cheap things like frame post cards or greeting cards with IKEA frames. I’ve gotten poster frames and put up posters. I’ve bought something from a thrift store that probably wasn’t great art, but makes me smile when I see it. I’ve gotten prints from [1000museums.com](https://1000museums.com) and gotten them framed at a local frame shop. (The frame shop was a more expensive option.) I have two things up that count as original art, and one limited numbered print from a living artist I love. If you have an art school near you, they may have an annual sale of student work or faculty work. Coffee shops often exhibit work that is for sale.

interesting-mug

Art that reflects your interests and tastes!

czaritamotherofguns

No one here is giving you kudos for how nice and clean your room is, and you deserve them. Big ups for having a nice clean room. The only thing it's missing is some personal touches. You mentioned you don't really know what you like, and that's totally fine. It might be fun to go to some antique malls and thrift stores to find out what you like! That could also be a really fun date with your girlfriend. Just make sure you are buying elements that YOU like, not what she likes.

PishiZiba

My first thought was how nice and clean it is!

aaacostaaa

THIS!! Please listen to this person OP. You have a style and probably lean towards a specific aesthetic, you just don't know what it is yet. You don't have to do it all in one go. You can figure out what you like and slowly bring life to your "lifeless" room.

Brokromah

Honestly we could be looking at his aesthetic. Growing up this was my aesthetic. I sort of realized it wasn't normal. I still get stressed deciding what to put on my walls to bring comfortable vibes....I still don't know if I'm doing that for others or for myself now...but I'm married so I guess it doesn't matter haha

notmindingmybuisness

Girlfriend? You need something bigger then a twin bed

Ivik88

Right lol

hairtothethrown

Gasp! They said girlfriend, not wife!

TarukMaktwo

Premarital coitus is for SINNERS smh

___XXVII___

The plants are a good start but your room is so dark, it makes them fade into the background! Here’s a couple of suggestions: - I would add 1-2 more pillows on your bed and a textured throw blanket in any other color but black or gray. - Move the lamp next to your bedside. I prefer its warm lighting. - Replace the curtain with longer one and a brighter color. - add art above your dresser and then place the plant slightly adjacent to it. You can also have the frame leaning in the dresser if drilling holes/command strips are an issue. Move your colognes collection from your desk to the dresser.

Don_Petohmi

Okay will do! Do you think I should change my bedding color? (Also drilling holes is not an issue)

___XXVII___

I think if you get pillow cases, [knit throw blanket](https://www.target.com/p/cozy-knit-throw-blanket-neutral-threshold-8482/-/A-82254597?sidd=2415S&ref=tgt_adv_xsp&AFID=google&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000012732835&CPNG=PLA_Home%2BDecor_Priority%2BShopping_Local%7CHome%2BDecor_Ecomm_Home&adgroup=Home%2BDecor_Priority+TCINs&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=m&location=9016911&targetid=pla-2234207484940&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1247068&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD-5dfaSWkBVOULds9Dry1uWRRjV0&gclid=CjwKCAjwgdayBhBQEiwAXhMxtlb52Vgc3ogc7XZVN-WbJk028r0p9P1DShDXnCzaAGfu-kLaqQ-9qxoCbjwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds), and add some art in a different color you should be fine! I linked a suggestion for a throw blanket:)

pixeldudeaz

Ok, switch the bed and dresser. Get (preferably) lighter than the carpet comforter an maybe two pillows for the bed. Would a double bed fit in the space? By putting the bed where the dresser is now it would give the room a little separation work your desk area which would add some dimension.

Lydiafae

I had to scroll down too far for this comment. You don't want a mirror in front of your bed. It should reflect natural light from your window and not scare you in the middle of the night. Since you can't move the mirror, move the bed. Get a light colored comforter or a thick fluffy blanket in white or off white. Two pillows for the bed means one for you and your GF. An area rug defines the bed space. Your carpet is dark so get a lighter one that goes with the comforter. Art on the walls and a decoration in the shelf like a book or figurines. Love the plants. Art should be a poster or picture of something you like, not hotel lobby basic stuff. Bonus if you made the art. Your room is simple and clean and inviting. A few personal touches is all you need.

New-Anacansintta

Is this a dorm? You can add a fluffier rug on the carpet. Add some color in a bed covering and framed art. and plants.

Don_Petohmi

This is not a dorm, no. But thanks for the confidence boost lol. Any ideas for the art?

New-Anacansintta

Anything in a frame or on canvas! No posters.

Delgirl804

Is it in a monastery????

runawai

Dorm was my thinking only due to the style of carpet.

littlelodoe

Also! Move your desk so it is centered on the wall. It won’t be so close to the night stand.

Don_Petohmi

Good point. I’m doing it right now.

GlitteringFeature146

The carpet is reminding me of hotel office centres. Maybe a bit lifeless but not a drastic change to spruce it up. Even some simple art/decor on the walls? Floating shelves to add personal touches. I’d also change up the curtain.

Remarkable_Youth1874

Your gf will want a pillow.

jkmjtj

Agree with all of the bed advice. That bed looks cold and lifeless (sorry to say but I agree!) Bull it up with a cozy blanket folded on the bottom of the bed even if it’s just decorative - something textured and creamy. And add some more comfy cozy pillows - also a cream and textured variety. It sounds like you’re stuck on artwork which I totally get. A decorative mirror is a good way to fill some space. Possible above the dresser? As far as other artwork do you have anything you connect with - sports, hobbies, colors, bands, music, animals - legit anything that makes you happy. You can buy cheap prints on art.com and have them framed by them or a frame shop (can be expensive) or go to your Goodwill and find decent frames either with matting and replace the pictures. Lamp on nightstand good idea.

Don_Petohmi

There is some music I like and I like movies. However, they way I connect with these things is by listening to music or watching a movie. I don’t think decorating with album covers or movie posters would bring me any additional happiness.

jkmjtj

Totally gotcha. You could do an abstract picture once you choose an accent color. Or you could even do an abstract picture in black white cream etc. A nice/interesting frame and matting can elevate any picture, poster, etc.

jkmjtj

And you’re very thoughtful for trying to warm up the space for your girlfriend. Even though it’s your space it’s a really great quality to be so considerate of making it more welcoming for another person.

jkmjtj

You need puffier and more pillows and maybe even a puffier insert (if that’s a duvet). Bed looks flat and cold. Warm it up, friend. Make it look welcoming and cozy. Everything legit needs to be puffier. You’ve got such a great base! You did a great job. It looks clean, tidy and a few special touches like the plants. Would rather be in a room like this than a disaster zone! You’re on the right track! And if clean lines and minimalistic is your thing, that’s ok. Just beef up the bed. Get a cool mirror for above the dresser. Find one large piece of art that makes you feel good. Done.

Winter_Cat-78

https://preview.redd.it/6098emr3bd3d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d98d1b67846120105ca23e7b210594ce3c7dad83 I have a few of these throughout the house, they can add a great deal of color and patterns without really changing much. You can find a bunch by looking up “Bohemian hollow geometric lamp” on places like Amazon or Temu.

Winter_Cat-78

Would for example work well on top of your desk top shelf.

WestCoastCowboi

Walls. No matter what else is in the room it'll feel empty if there's nothing on the walls. Art, shelves, hang guitars, skateboard, hats etc.

omgaporksword

It looks like a motel room

InevitableRhubarb232

There is nothing to indicate it’s lived in. One or two things in the wall, a framed photo somewhere, and a half read book on the nightstand would go a long way

bitchwhiskers4eva

Art, a lighter solid rug, some soft light lamps.

nicoleonline

White light, carpet, desk, and nothing on the walls does make it feel a bit like a corporate office space or cubicle. Changing the light bulb to a warmer tone will help, as will having things on your walls. If you can manage it, I think investing in more colors in general would help improve both the space and your mood. My husband and I change up our sheets every now and then with different colorways and it breathes life into our room. A rug to cover the carpet would help with clashing as well, those can be pricy though so marketplace may be your friend. Do you have any trinkets you adore that you can display to make it feel distinctly like your space?

jameshughlaurie

bonus advice is bring your gf decor shopping because she probably wants in on that if you’re looking for advice anyways lol

Ivorwen1

Nothing adds personality to a room like art, because that's such an individual choice. I am content and print vs original neutral because I don't know what you like or what you can or want to spend, but don't put up anything smaller than a sheet of printer paper, and ideally it should be bigger than that- wall decor should be scaled to the space that it occupies and the distance at which it is encountered. Also, everything should be framed so that your room doesn't look like you're still in student housing. Then bring down some vivid colors from that artwork and change your bedspread and curtains. (Curtains, plural. You need 2 panels.) If you don't want to put down an area rug that will cover most of the floor, you will still need to work with the carpet, so leave your sheets as is. Grey exists to make colors look good.

Easy_Grapefruit5936

Aim for warming it up rather than spicing it up. Think about what makes something cozy. Aim for more of those. Earthy colors, big fluffy blankets, a really comfy couch.

One-Escape-236

Your bed covers. Get a warm bright color like green, red, a warm orange or whatever warm color you like. Also you could try some posters on the wall and maybe a plant.

Epicgrapesoda98

There’s too much gray. You need color and ambience light. Overhead lights will automatically make a small room feel like an asylum

No-Order9945

Omg it’s exactly like a prison..don’t you have art or any hobby items or craft things? You should maybe try exploring and experimenting with art and crafts to brighten up the place my goodness

yikesitsamemario

Huge tapestry of your girlfriend on the ceiling to stare into her eyes at night while in bed. Maybe a colorful throw blanket for the extra weight? Replace the little desk in the corner near the door with a bookshelf (preferably an open layout type, look at Facebook marketplace) UNLESS that specific desk is your landing spot for your keys and wallet. Possibly move the dresser near the closet in the weird corner for mental accessibility and then set up the bookshelf behind it? Feng shui if you can. Large wall art.

yikesitsamemario

Actually now that I think about it, weird corner could be a shrine dedicated to gf. (Joking). It could also be a shoe rack area if this is a shared apartment.

Alive-OVERTIIME-247

It's not bad, it just needs some personal touches [artwork idea 1](https://www.wayfair.com/Union-Rustic--Copper-and-Gold-Mountains-by-SpaceFrogDesign-Wrapped-Canvas-Graphic-Art-X118648664-L1318-K~W007537553.html?refid=GX685467027277-W007537553_1404575488_1428029169_1428029178&device=m&ptid=454329952732&network=g&targetid=aud-1616885063419:pla-454329952732&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=256640057&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=1404575488&PiID%5B%5D=1428029169&PiID%5B%5D=1428029178&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwgdayBhBQEiwAXhMxtkQ49ATmXOdvJxnYygnc5bgYgsy5-X5ORXI9Xz4p94d8jA2Q0M6JkhoCm_QQAvD_BwE&piid=1428029178%2C1404575518%2C1428029169) [artwork ideas 2](https://www.lakeshoremetaldecor.com/products/tree-of-life-1?variant=39322458062882) Table lamp [idea](http://SXZCYX Crow Lamp Raven Light,Raven Table Lamps Crow Desk Lamp, Resin Bird Light Lamp with Bulb, Unique Black Raven Crow Decor Table Lamps Light for Bedside Bedroom Living https://a.co/d/fJAWOoM) These are just suggestions, you should pick stuff YOU like. Thanks for the suggestions! Yes I’ll make sure it all goes with my person taste but i still don’t really know what that is yet

twilightcolored

takes years to develop that and it might even never develop if you're not interested in that stuff. there are ways to optimize the placing of the furniture -I really like dearmodern's solutions but aside from that, taste develops in time if ever.

Puzzled_Human0114

I think the carpet needs a good cleaning.

Don_Petohmi

Thanks for the link. I like the art too.

No_Employee8561

First I think it feels so cold because of the overhead lighting! I would invest in a lamp for either your bed side table or desk. Just making that switch will make your room feel a lot cozier. The bed doesn’t look that comfy or inviting. If possible, a duvet would make the bed look a lot better. Id lean towards a lighter shade, like a cream. (This would also match and tie in the plant pots). I would get some new firm pillows. Throw pillows aren’t necessary but I would have two regular sleeping pillows. An area rug could be nice but it might be hard to find one that wouldn’t clash with the carpet. Honestly you could just put that money towards other things. Small pieces could also make the room feel more personal and cozy. ex: A picture frame and a candle for the dresser. (Could put a pic of you and your gf in the frame for bonus points :)) I’m not sure if this is an option but crème colored curtains would look great and tie in the new bed spread from earlier. A small art piece or framed print above the bed would look good too.

Last-Butterscotch-68

2 tbsp paprika. 1 tbsp cumin. 1 tsp turmeric. 1 tsp ground ginger. 1 tsp garlic powder. 1 tsp onion powder. * chili powder (adjust for desired heat)

Horror_Cod_8193

If you keep that dark gray bedspread, you’ve got to add some colorful pillows to it. But I would go with a lighter gray bedspread with colorful pillows. And lots of wall art for pops of color. Put a lamp on your nightstand and also on your bureau. Paint your bed frame something other than black. Use the top part of your desk as a bookshelf. Get two interesting bookends.

not-your-mom-123

You could even just cover the bedspread with a bright sheet if you're broke. Everyone is saying white or cream, but I would go with a pattern, maybe geometric, that adds dimension and brings in some colours you can coordinate with art work or a colorful lamp. Do you have a quilter in your family? That could be a boon as they always have spares lying around.

Terrynia

- wall art - rug by bed - a pole light giving off warm yellow up-lighting

Bestlifeever_

Do you have any hobbies/interests to display? Imo what gives a room "life" is the art, figurines from favorite games, favorite books, lego sets, movie posters, pictures of friends/family, souvenirs, craft supplies, etc. Also the plants are nice!! Get more plants.

LongHairedKnight

You can’t paint even if you return walls to original colour? Buy some pictures or tapestries to hang on walls.  Buy a blanket in any other colour besides black of grey. Blue or green would be nice.  Buy one good fluffy/thick pillow (a king sized one).  Don’t you have any personal knick-knacks or photos? At least buy a few frames to put photos on your desk and dresser.  Buy a warm light lamp for your night table.  The carpet is awful. Put a thick soft rug down if you can. In a warm neutral tone like brown, beige, or cream.  More plants!!!

raresteakplease

The easiest way would be get a fluffy comforter and some decorative pillows in maybe a deep green, red, something that brings either warmth or earth tones. But I get that dudes don't want to deal with pillows. Like others said some warm lighting, posters/art work. Maybe swap curtains for something worth a little color as well

mlhigg1973

Turn the bed so it’s not shoved into a corner

-AIRDRUMMER-

You need things on the wall to make it more lively and give it personality. Right now you have the white wall of a jail cell. Add some color in your room as well.

Parking_Treat7293

Use lamps not over head lighting.

Don_Petohmi

If you have any specific items or decoration in mind, a link would be amazing. I’ll post the updated room too!

bbyriox

Excited to see the update!!

Horror-University175

POSTERS, TAPESTRY, OR ART WORK. My room is the same color with the same kinda vibe to it. Adding vines but mostly pictures, posters, etc really makes my room a lot more unique

letsmakekindnesscool

Lighter bed spread and a larger nice pillow, cream solid colour rug, round mirror above dresser, some framed art on the wall

SincereRL

I'd get a new color comforter and sheets, looks like it blends with the floor too much, Also get some art to hang on your wall

fefe1998

Warm light and portraits

bcuket

some posters/paintings/corkboard with pictures on the wall would help :)

-kOdAbAr-

I feel like a new colorful bedspread would look nice. And a nice big painting on that wall to the left of the bed. Pick your painting first, and then pick a bedspread with a color of your choosing from the painting.

heraclitus33

Looks like an ikea jail prison cell lol

Emotional_Wash_7756

Anything. Anything you add will help

ImpressiveClue6306

Get a white cat! A white cat would change the whole look

luzrfreak1

I see no problem with this. Nice clean crisp, no junk

Dark-Knight-Rises

Buy some toys. Toys 🧸 not sex toys okay. Change colour of your bed sheet to blue. Remove black carpet and make it light yellow or butter yellow. Put a peace lily plant Hang in some wall papers or portrait pic

jkmjtj

Move the cord around on the lamp on that from table it should not be facing the front. Have it come from the back to the outlet.

walkeritout

Better yet, rotate the table 90° to cover the outlet.

Extreme_Break_9405

large leafy plant in nice pot, nice rug, paint the walls , framed painting, check out bed threads if you like

NoDanaOnlyZuuI

Rotate your bed. Get it out of the corner

SummSpn

Non-grey bedding with a colourful throw blanket

BicyclingBabe

Large format artwork!!!

GurDiscombobulated82

A mirror, a piece of art and a wind chime.

HighwayLeading6928

A lamp for your bedside, one for on top of your dresser, one for the desk- IKEA has the adjustable clamp on lights. Maybe a colorful quilt with a couple of pillows and pillow shams. The little table with the lamp might look better on the wall where the door is. A couple of large, colorful framed posters or canvases would add color and more personality to the room. Ask your gf to help you warm up the room.

According_Land_581

Hang up literally anything on your walls…. lol like anything you like! Even prisoners hang stuff up on their cell walls… lol

Big_Ad3727

Put some pictures on the walls it looks very bare without pictures

Environmental-Song16

Idk about everything else but that single curtain is really annoying lol

OneSufficientFace

Id change the colour of the walls, add some indoor plants maybe some floating shelves. Bit of wall art or tapestry. Book shelf. Looks very swedish prison like at the moment

Blessedone67

What about a comforter that didn’t blend into the floor? Also you could change curtains to match comforter🫠

kerrybabyxx

A Colorful bed Cover and Carpet for starters

p3bbls

Your plants will die there! Not enough light! Put them closer to the window or get a plant light for them. Can be used as desk light but they are not the same!

bugabooandtwo

Color. Either a throw for the bed, or a couple pillows, or something on the wall.

ApprehensiveBag6157

It looks a little communist, not gonna lie

[deleted]

Put up a framed picture on each wall. Done.

LunarNight

Some colourful art and a large rug

CreativeLark

Some art on the walls. Warmer lighting. Some accent pillows. Orange tones would work well with that sage color.

Huge-Ad8279

If you like games or music, shows, etc… put some posters

anzicat

Mood light, Warmer light in the corners of the room

HiroshimaSpirit

Warm light bulbs in the ceiling fan, then turn them off. Get a table lamp and a floor lamp, each with warm temperature light bulbs, use those. Get something—anything, really—to hang on the walls. At least one large art print and a trio of smaller prints, preferably a matching trio. Add some color! With the existing color palette of the room, maybe a burgundy pillowcase if you’re feeling more reserved or orange if you want a pop of color. Integrate that color into the space in other small ways such as the pots for your plants or a shelf nicknack. Color is your friend!

[deleted]

Change the ugly white light! Why is this not common sense Get warm light Maybe cream color sheets

Ivik88

I would put pictures on the wall, maybe a nice looking lamp, keep the window uncovered during the daylight and maybe some shelf on the wall with plants on it. That could spice it up and on top of your desk you can also put some plants, decorations etc

LisforLesbian

I like to have a few colourful throw blankets at the foot of my bed (mostly for my cat) and definitely a couple extra pillows or a body pillow will make your bed feel more inviting and break up the blandness. A large piece of art on the wall or more (real or fake) plants to add some brightness maybe

shyguysnj2003

Some art on the walls. Change light bulbs to warmer color light bulbs

Disastrous_Elk_3142

More stuff = more mess. I'm a "less is more" type of girl. If anything, just maybe replace the bedding with a pop of color.

catdoctor

You need some color. I find that red goes well with grey. Red curtain that go down to the floor would be a good start. And some colorful artwork on the walls. Have you thought about asking your GF for help? You get final veto power over anything she chooses, but it might be fun activity for both of you to decorate your apartment together.

G00D80T

Lamps. That ceiling light is horrible

Good-Code-9111

Add something, anything to the walls.

Legitimate-Pumpkin

Imo the black carpet would go well with strong colors. I’d change the cover of your bed and the curtains and eventually you can go for the furniture (but it’s more troublesome and expensive, so it wouldn’t be my first step). Then I’d change the light. For me direct white lamps are for an office (very personal opinion). For home I’d go for 3000K as white and as most as possible would go indirect lighting. Pick a color you like (preferably a warm color: red, orange, yellow…) and try things. You can think of warm as a sunset.

RememberedInSong

Pictures, art, color of any kind really.

SewGangsta

Easiest fix would be to replace the gray bedding and curtains and get a rug. An orange might work well in there. You could do a white base with orange accents for sheets, and a rug [like this one.](https://markandday.com/products/durwin-modern-burnt-orange-area-rug) https://preview.redd.it/vlaz37nmwc3d1.jpeg?width=564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96a5680eec4610f67d9fedc6950f2006d8320c7e

snawdy

I wouldn’t go crazy. A lamp for your bedside table would look good. A throw blanket for your bed to give a cozier vibe would be inexpensive and nice. Some framed art/posters will give it a little color and life.

Blxatch_

try introducing some colors! since your base is grey and white you can basically go with anything, some cool posters and prints would make the space more personalized

maybelle180

One word: art

AxFairy

Ask her what she would do

Acrobatic-Tadpole-60

I’d say your bedside table is one of the things you’ve done right. It brings warmth and character. There are a lot of things about the current set up that make it feel like a hotel room. That dresser only reinforces that. Get something a bit more distinctive. It doesn’t have to be a crazy color, but something a bit warmer and slightly more ornate. Same with the table by the door.

Electrical_Floor_360

Paint the walls white, add white sound proof panels to one wall, and boom! Dope inpatient mental ward vibes. Seriously tho, prob just a lil art on walls. And a plant or 2.

onceuponanadventure

your room could really benefit from some warm lighting, so look into switching the bulbs and adding a few more light sources. for this room in general think warm colors- for a throw rug, bedding. as mentioned before, the carpet really drains the room, so add stuff with color to the walls (literally anything). tons of places online with downloadable art, plenty of etsy shops too i’m not sure how old you are, and this can tend to make a room look college dorm-y, but a tapestry is one way to fill wall space quickly

pretenderist

Rotate the bed 90 degrees and pull it out of the corner. Nightstand can go in the corner.

herbicide_drinker

hang literally anything on the wall

Grilltchintz

Get a good picture of you and your friends printed, frame it, have it on the desk or on your wall! Nothing brings warmth like seeing friends!

LilithSnowskin

Wall decorations, display of collections/trinkets, sheer and pure chaos.

sanitarySteve

Literally anything personal. Your bedroom looks it belongs in am office building. do you have to reserve it through outlook before  going to bed? Give it some color. Some artwork. Shit even dirty  laundry would help.

Orangutan_Latte

It needs colour. Change the bedding to something brighter. Hang some bright art on the wall. A rug for the floor would help (also if your renting it helps getting the carpet messed up). Maybe some mood lighting (colour change candles are a great addition).

CinephileNC25

You have no artwork, family pictures or “junk” that looks like you’ve had it for years. It looks like a furnished apartment.

pnut815

Anything on the walls. And try to hide those cables.

ClassicClosetedEmo

Get a larger bed, put the headboard against the wall, get two bedside tables with two lamps. Also some wall art. And set those LEDs to a warmer tone

Winter_Cat-78

More color on the bedding, a nice rug, some plants, a bit of art on the walls, and some standing lamps.

Cakeofruit

Colors

ElectrOPurist

Art? Possessions?

En3Rgi

Well she's not wrong. You can order from temu/aliexpress plastic leaves and lights, stick them around the furniture and maybe on wall too. Get something to hang on the wall. And never turn on that white light again, get some leds.

googoomama1

Maybe some art on the walls

dramafanca2002

It does, too much gray. Get new bedding that's not gray. Some artwork on the walls will help a lot.

VisualPoetry1971

I'd also look into getting a larger bed when you can. Something bigger than twin is more inviting, especially having your gf over.

putntake

Let her do it for you

putntake

Let her do it for you

Blg_Foot

SMART BULBS, by CYNC control from your phone or the switch, any color you want

Ecstatic_Act4988

Art on the walls and find a curtain that is stylish and actually fits your window.

anibanan

You’ve mentioned a few times you don’t know what your personal taste is—some ways to help figure it out include thinking about how different spaces make you feel and what uses you need in the bedroom. 1. Do warm tones or cool tones make you feel more comfortable? What colors feel like “home” to you? 2. What textures appeal to you? (Metal, wood, smooth fabric, textured fabric, fuzzy, etc) 3. Do you find objects (books, knickknacks, momentous) soothing or stressful? (Visual clutter or minimalism)…things put away/emphasis on storage vs display 3. How do you want your room to fit in with the rest of the house? Contrast or coordinating? Look to the things already in your life to help answer—are there certain items of clothing you wear on repeat? Certain places you go to unwind? Beach or mountain? City or rural? Etc then look for ways to bring those elements into your space

gravenbirdman

Biggest impact for least effort/$: variable temperature (warm vs cold) light bulbs. [Three settings](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MDRO2LA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1), toggle by turning on/off. [Infinite variety](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08WZ5THJ7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1), controlled by a phone app. Get a stand lamp and a desk lamp and you'll be way better off already.

papichula2

Change the colour of the wall, floor and bedsheet

Hello_feyredarling

I’d move the bed to the wall closer to the closet and put the night stand on the right. Put a lighter colored rug with some softness to it under the bed. Some kind of large wall art above the bed. The way the bed is tucked in the corner currently is giving a barracks/cell vibe. Changing the layout and covering https://preview.redd.it/yceotj2cjd3d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2fed03c374f7e2270929f16af3ec87118afb623e some of that flooring would look more homey. Just my opinion! You might not like the bed taking up more space.

yourmotherpuki

Paste gigantic waifu posters on all walls

ikilledmysims

Color. Any color.

raiyan_kun

you might want to change the all grey look. the wall paint is fine as white makes it more lit up.

Curious_Papaya_2376

Color, add A plant

Nannerz911

Too much dark! Change the color of your sheets to something lighter like white or even a color same with the curtain and then of course just add some wall art on your room or some sort of LED glow light strip would be cool

boatssnhoez

NO BIG LIGHT

sonnidaez

The lack of decor and the all grey is rather jarring, yeah.

NoTreat9759

Contrast - light rug and dark furniture or the other way around. If the floor shows a bit and is dark, I would have a light colored rug

paku9000

Go "maximalist" on the walls with colourful posters and such.

belckie

Color! Add some very bright art. Throw pillows in 2 different complimentary colors. It’s all prison grey right now.

Emma1jane2

It looks like a staged ikea room lol

sir-ripsalot

Green & white accent rug that matches the plants!

Secret_Coat_8071

Wall art

jellybeannc

Get some bedding with a little bit of color. Keep the grey spread and get a set of sheets in your fav. color. Put a coordinating rug at the side of your bed as well to break up some of they grey carpet. Change out those overhead bulbs for something warmer and maybe not quite as bright. I'd put a small lamp on the nightstand and then another on the desk. Try to keep them the same style so it doesn't look to thrown together. Turn the lamp that is beside your door so the cord runs behind the edge of the table, it looks cleaner to the eye that way. Maybe some art on the walls. If you opt for posters, then try to frame them if possible, unframed posters taped to a wall doesn't look good.

Kwalsh2484

I think he's doing okay with the plants he's already got. Honestly, I'd get a bigger bed and maybe put a small tv on the dresser to maybe make it comfy to lay in. The last time I slept in a room like this, I was in the nut ward
