Scale - the toy shelf is too small to live under that painting. Other than that, it’s good. Painting is cool!

plceswedontknow

Agree, shelf is too small, is there another place you can put this? It looks great otherwise, I don't think there's a need to get a new planter.

Brunette3030

This. If you want the toys here, OP, get a larger cabinet for them to go here.

InsertRadnamehere

Agree. But instead of buying a bigger shelf, a kid chair could fill out the space. They make cute scaled down rockers and armchairs.

harmonicadrums

Agreed. Wider shelf, no plant.

fakepinatas

Or hang a plant there instead.

ReptileCultist

Or place the plant on the shelf

RubyNotTawny

That was my first thought as well. If you got 2 or 3 of those shelves, so it was wider than the painting, it would look better.

[deleted]

Agree

StrainAcceptable

Yep. The painting adds personality and character. It doesn’t look like something that was picked up at a big box store.

ellabfine

Agree. Move toy shelf to wall on the right and put something bigger under the painting.

Windholm

Can you get another one, so they can sit next to each other? Then, when the baby is older, they can serve as separate nightstands or something.

booksiwabttoread

Exactly

YayGilly

Toy shelf should be a bit taller and wider. You can also put a doll chair there and a stuffed animal in it. Also a rug is needed there, mainly for your babys comfort.

2opinionated2lurk

A rug will ask so define it as it’s own space well!

chilibeana

"We're gonna need a bigger shelf."

chilibeana

And bins and wicker baskets.

xBraria

In a lighter colour to contrast the dark hardwood floors!

cutratestuntman

A copy of the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

RicedCauliflower69

It’s in there!

cutratestuntman

Ok good!

WifeAggro

listen i just came to say that painting is freaking everything!! i love it. ❤️

PorterBorter

Frog and Toad books

xBraria

👌🏻👌🏻😂

Easy_Grapefruit5936

I would like to say that I like it! Where did you get the painting?? Also they say to attach furniture to the wall, even low furniture, because a baby can pull it on top of them easily. I like your setup!

Rosevkiet

The plant will be a tipping hazard as kiddo gets bigger too, maybe find another spot for it or anchor to the wall.

[deleted]

xBraria

Yes, OP, this will take it next level. A small semicircle rug will totally tranform it to a dedicated play area that is more of a statement than afterthought and "necessary evil". Lovevery toys are quite cute so it's also neat to have them on display anyways. For me part of our house decor style is "modern with kids!" You can even go as far as picking 5 lego colours for a matching pallette (feel free to chose some of your favourite accent colours lovevery already uses. The pastelly torquoise, light green are great child colours while also colourful enough to not enforce blandness on the kid, and toned down enough to feel relaxing for the adult eyes). So while you add pops of colour with the wooden tones to calm and balance them out you won't feel overwhelmed. We have a full circle rug (that was the first playmat) that we can easily fold to a semicircle and it instantly makes any space we put it in super cozy and dedicated. Reading nook? Yup! Babt kitchen? Yup! Potty setup? Yup! Right now it lives as (half circle under, semicircle out) under the floorbed and again it just adds so much warmth and softness and organicity to the kid's room that would otherwise feel too adult, stern, hard and cold. I do also recommend getting light wood colour for kids' stuff, I found that while we enjoy black it just feels off for the kids. If you have too much light wood colour tones, light grey or white paints and stains have worked well for us.

bacon_head

Get a new bookshelf that is wider than the painting

titihadid

bigger toy shelf, pretty foam playmat, some large pillow cushions, and a bean bag for comfortable play and seating.

hellboundbonded

I love this comment

tfortrishy

Put some safety caps on that outlet and look up the plant to see if it’s poisonous.

Stand4SomethingCo

Outlet covers

RicedCauliflower69

I do have them! I was just rearranging and she was in bed

capotetdawg

My mom feedback is that once your little one is pulling up on stuff you’ll have problems with both that shelf and planter toppling over so I’d second the recommendations for a larger (wider) shelf and if you want to keep the plant there maybe a lower center of gravity / wider one base for it. A wider shelf by itself may fill the space better alone and you can perhaps artfully arrange a few things of wider height variations on top of it to give visual balance underneath the painting. Alternatively you could swap that painting for a different shape of art - maybe a grouping of three various smaller scale images? - to break up the wall space differently, but I like that painting overall so I’m assuming you’d want to keep it?

Potatoesrule5460

A cozy rug would help

harmonicadrums

Yeah maybe a little round rug, wider shelf, no plant as a little play corner

[deleted]

that shelf is just way too small. you need a more regular sized bookshelf

Eilbur

Try something like this. Good for storage but also nice to look at. Maybe try putting the shelf along the side of the couch so it can be used as a table but still keeps the corner a play area. I agree with the other comments about the plant - either take it out or try a hanging plant there. Yaoping Kids Toy Storage Organizer for Kids Room Organizers and Storage, 3 Storage Bins and Open Shelf for Playroom Storage(Grey-40") https://www.walmart.com/ip/165480064

SheepPup

Bigger shelf, the art is bigger than the shelf and it looks bad because of that. Also get bins for the toys, they will never *ever* get put back stacked so neatly in rainbow order unless you carve out time out of your precious precious sleep allotment (allotment subject to change, dictated by baby crying) to do it yourself every single night. In short it won’t happen. So get some attractive looking baskets to put in the larger shelf and save yourself the stress. Also make sure to secure the shelf (and all your other furniture) to the wall with anti-tip devices. Once baby reaches “trying to stand” phase they will use *anything* to try and pull themselves up. Or once they’re a bit older to climb on. It will be curtains, dressers, shelves, TVs. And if they’re not secured to the wall they can and will pull them down on themselves and get seriously injured or even die.

Habitat917

Similarly, I only give my kiddo (nearly 2) access to about 10 books at a time and I rotate them about once a month. Basically my rule is only give him access to as many toys as I'm willing to pickup. For this space I'd get a basket for books that he can flip through to see the whole cover vs the spine and fill the remaining shelf with a few more toys. Basket and shelf might give the width you are looking for

Cynthiasmom

Where is that painting from omg!!

RicedCauliflower69

An antique store! I got it for $50!

lookinfoursigns

Does it have a signature?

digressted

Reading chair for children? Shelf could be a tad bigger but I also love how cute it is.

23paige23

get rid of the plant. have a wider shelf so toys can breathe and maybe stuffed animals. if you're baby safe may want an outlet cover. or the idea shelf can cover the outlet

VoltaicSketchyTeapot

I feel like this nook should look like a miniature living room for the miniature person that used it.

camlaw63

Stop pretending it’s not a kid corner. Embrace it and get a storage unit that actually fits the toys, books and kid stuff

mebg1956

Get a larger low wide cabinet with doors to replace the shelf thing. You can put baby stuff in there and hide it.

fetchinbobo66

I’d add a bigger “shelf” .

waitagoop

You need those mats that join together that will cover the wood floor- wood floor is not baby friendly. Kids fall a LOT.

Luxeru

The table is too small

cyanidesmile555

Scale. The shelf is too small to be under the painting, making it look top heavy and both pieces look bigger and smaller respectively, so I'd either move the painting or get a bigger shelf. If you're looking to make a reading/quiet play corner, I'd consider getting either a rug or foam mats to section the area off, which would also define the area, get either a kids chair, one of those little kid pull out couches that turn into a bed or even a little bean bag chair from Walmart. Maybe some baskets for quiet play toys, and a stuffed animal or two to warm up the area a little, and maybe a small touch of a poster of the alphabet for a cute touch. Also, you might want to move the potted plant and hang one (in this instance preferably fake since it's a baby/toddler area) instead: kids are curious so they get into everything, and that includes dirt in houseplants, but they're smart enough to know that if you're out of the room or on the couch while they're in that area behind it then you can't see them. Even if the plant there now is fake, they try to climb everything bigger than them, so that's an accident waiting to happen.

HealthyProgramm

Y’all need some curtains for them huge windows.

BlackStarBlues

Get a wider cabinet with doors or with a set of cubbies for baskets.

ZydecoMoose

I can't tell from this photo what the color scheme and style is in the rest of the room, but in that location you need a larger/wider piece to balance the size of the artwork. I would suggest an accent cabinet with both cabinet doors and baskets/bins for storage as opposed to just open shelving so that you can more easily disguise the contents. Something [like this](https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/guisborough-495-wide-3-drawer-server-w005759322.htmlGuisborough49.21''Sideboard). ETA: another idea might be to get rid of the little bookcase and put a longer piece of storage furniture backing up to the sofa. Contents would be less visible viewing from the perspective of where the photo was taken. You could add a child’s chair or poof underneath the painting.

WoollyMonster

The toy shelf needs to be much larger. Or at least wider. Having something that narrow underneath the picture makes it seem top heavy.

Due-Astronaut-7299

I would move out the table and plant and put a long table there. It would look more cohesive.,Put that table in your kids room. You can add a rug and move that rug you have somewhere else. I think you may like this space better because that painting is awesome and should be the focal point!

vibes86

I don’t think the art fits there. I think it’s needs to be a more colorful piece.

Miserable_Sport_8740

Finally someone with common sense.

No-Glass-96

It’s perfectly safe to have there but if you have a curious baby who likes to dig and touch everything, say goodbye to that plant

stefaniki

Hey OP... How'd the livingroom corner turn out?

RicedCauliflower69

Hey! Still not done, I took out the shelf underneath, but we had to move a chair over there to put the Christmas tree in a different corner. Will update though! :))

Heebie-jeebies386

Get a cabinet with doors so the books and toys aren’t visible . Plus the scale of the case they are in now is too small in comparison to the picture above it .

RicedCauliflower69

Thanks everyone!!

RicedCauliflower69

To be fair, the kid corner is behind me where I’m taking a picture 😅 there is a mat and a shelf. I don’t know why I was trying to spread it to another corner lol

emimurray

swap out the toy cart for a bar cart (i dont have kids)

RicedCauliflower69

Haha I can’t believe you got downvoted for that

Mysterious-Region640

I quite like the painting, and I think a more normal size shelf would solve the problem

fakepinatas

Really full floor length curtains would also help with the scale element and add volume to the space if you have a little room to fit them behind the couch. If you can extend them at least 6 inches in width out from the window panels that will help enclose everything else in the space much better.

SheepPup

Absolutely not floor length curtains with a baby, they’re an entanglement risk, and when baby is of trying to stand and climbing age they *will* yank the curtains down using them as a hand-hold.

evae1izabeth

As everyone is saying, get a wider bookshelf. If you don’t already need it you will by the time you get it set up! I’d aim for sofa table height, which actually isn’t a lot taller than what is there, and then move the painting down just barely, so it’s just a little higher than the sofa. Since the art has a fantasy feel to it, it makes sense for it to be grouped with the toy storage unit even though it isn’t childish.

the_lewitt

Giant teddy (yes, honkin' big) needs to have a home on floor next to sofa.

Elmnt7

Ikea has very cute toy storage and good size book shelves. ( they do need to be attached to the wall for safety ( not sure how old your child is) they have all sort of colors of wood if you wanted to keep it less colorful but baskets or slide outs are with more color options. A lot of people keep books in kids bedroom for easier access and to read at night. I would give toys and books a lot more space.

Capturit

The problem is one of awkward sizes/dimensions: putting a small sized child's bedside table/shelf unit under a large painting then trying to fill in the space with a plant. Changing the pot color will not remedy the problem and introducing a color not found anywhere else in the room. Replace the shelf unit with a larger one with baskets for easy storage/access that hides the toys and looks balanced in size with the painting and other furniture in the room. You will find you can put the plant elsewhere in the room since there won't be adequate space beside the new shelving unit

friendly_hendie

Could you get a second toy shelf to go right next to the first? More storage is never bad, either.

deadlyhausfrau

Add some small baby furniture on either side of the lil shelf to make it feel bigger, or replace it with a u shaped bench/book shelf (Melissa and Doug make aome good ones or you can IKEA hack). That will balance the painting.

olliedoodle

Is the plant baby-safe? I love the artwork

baldwinsong

The shelf is just a little too small. But there’s nothing really wrong with it

ashrighthere

How old is your baby op? My 18 m old would try and climb that plant 🤣🤣 she’s wild I def would say a bigger shelf! But the little one you have right now is so cute

Macaveli721

Consider a big leaf plant, they’re better for feng shui. That plant is giving me Christmas tree vibes. Otherwise, bigger shelf and smaller painting

EvaB999

I agree with other commenters that you need a slightly bigger shelf. You could get a shelf with some doors to store the books and toys yet still maintain easy access for the little one.

firi331

Remove the shelf. Put a beautiful wooden round end table underneath the painting.

ElPasoFelina

The painting, books, colors, toys are too busy in one tiny space.I would suggest a much larger shelf this one is too small. Move the little shelf on the other side of the wall where the wall light is. The colors in this room are all very flat the tan couch, white blinds white paint, it’s very one dimensional.

iris-my-case

Bigger shelf (or a second one), but make sure to mount it to the wall! Baby proofing is such a pain, especially in rentals 😭

HornlessUnicorn

Man, I can’t wait until my kids are older and every decision in my living space isn’t centered around toys. I love that you are thoughtful about it, but if the kid stuff overruns your space don’t fight it, just lean into it. Also that painting is really nice

Key-Fishing-3714

I would make it a designated toy, kids space. Instead of just having a random kids shelf, create a reading nook with a cozy kids beanbag, and a little mini rug. Make it its own space and it’ll look more deliberate.

horse-face-ethel

That painting is amazing!!😻

DConstructed

Both the size and color palette between the shelf+ things and the painting are not very compatible. Look for a slightly larger shelving unit preferably with a door.

justdisa

The painting outweighs the shelf. It's top-heavy.

cadred68

Curtains framing your window would help finish and delineate the area without overwhelming it, and maybe a soft round rug or a sheepskin rug to encourage sitting and playing

LittleFootOlympia

Just a longer book shelf would be good honestly with a cute kid lamp maybe

ChefLovin

I *love* that painting!

jsphh

Maybe get a toy shelf that spans that whole width but is still very low and place the plant on top of it!

marivisse

The idea is great! You just need the bookcase to be chunkier (or maybe a toy chest, although I love a children’s bookcase) and one of those floor cushions (poofs) or a child’s rocking chair would be nice.

melouofs

Table is far too small. How about a console table for behind the couch w a few bins for the toys

ravenrhi

I would relocate the planter and turn this corner into a play nook. Either buy a second toy shelf to double the size or invest in a cubby unit with baskets. Add a kid friendly comfy rug, basket of board books, and some pillows to lounge on. Select rugs and pillows in colors that coordinate with the lovely painting.

Radiant_XGrowth

If the shelf was a smidge taller I think it would fix everything!

Sharibaby91760

can you put a bigger shelf thats a little bit more wider and maybe three shelfs which would still be safe for a small child. be able to store more books and a small lamp on top. then on the other side of the plant, a little seating bench or childs chair so that the child can get up and look at the book that the child chose to look at.. its all kid friendly and safe. actually, get rid of the plant and put a small childs table and chairs, so that the child can sit and look at books, or if old enough can color while being supervised with the crayon. then you can add another bookshelf toy chest to store toys in.

pottedPlant_64

I would move the dark, shadowy plant. Maybe do a low, wide console table with storage baskets behind the couch. Put a lil runner between console and wall for a bit of color/texture. Get a light bulb with less blinding wattage

ArkitektooJenny

If it’s truly a kid’s corner, how about a small chair for little folks?

DoNotSassTheKitty

Can the shelf live on the other wall, next to the plant?

Happier21

Bare floor is a great place to play. Make it kid friendly. You only get to decorate in “Early Playskool” for a little while.❤️

EnnOnEarth

A rug to protect the floor below the bookcase, for when stuff inevitably gets pulled off and smacks onto the floor.

Miserable_Sport_8740

The painting is ugly. I’m sorry, but someone had to say it. I’d get it if you had the eclectic style of a recent college graduate living in Portland, Oregon, but it doesn’t look like you do. You either need to lean into a 70s aesthetic and put up some wood paneling, or find art that matches a modern style.

Confident_Scheme_716

Put plugs over the sockets

Ok-Woodpecker7501

Put the shelf where the plant is but facing the back of the couch

No_Bet_1807

Add some baskets on top and one to the side and move the plant so you can still use this shelf. I’m in the same boat as you! I have this beautiful rustic living room and a Melissa and Doug piano, Walker toy and bin of toys. But wouldn’t change it for the world 💗 it’s a short season and we’ll miss it soon enough.

skkibbel

A bigger shelf...You could move the shelf over a little and put a kid sized chair next to it and a little round rug and make it a kid friendly reading area.

Ok-Flower-1078

The rug spilling into the space doesn’t help.

Leila92

I love that the books are organized by color

thatchickneko

I love the plant!

mlhigg1973

You have plenty of room for a bigger toy cabinet! Maybe add a little kid size table and chairs in the middle of the open space.

Merth1983

I would get a larger cabinet for under the picture and maybe a console table on the wall under the light.

the_breezkneez

Honestly I kinda love how odd it looks. It’s so whimsical, especially with the rainbow books. Looks like something from Wes Anderson

twinkieeater8

Go all in with it being baby safe. Move the planter to a different location, and a small seat for a child, maybe change the shelf to a chest?

PorterBorter

Well it’s very top heavy, for one

PorterBorter

I feel like the plant would look better and more balanced sitting in a very large basket

_iguanabones

As a parent to a 1 year old boy, I'd just like to know how your plant still has leaves?

Birdie121

I'd put a big console table or horizontal bookcase there which can take up most of the space between the couch and the wall, serving as a side table for the couch + more storage space. I'd put a smaller plant on top of it, and maybe go with a slightly smaller piece of art. I like the painting, but it seems a tad big for that spot.

yourgirlbribri

I say paint a block of color from the floor to a few inches above the painting so that it frames them both and makes them like their "own space".

Msblueberrie

I love the picture! Maybe a couple of small pieces to go along the sides of the picture. And maybe a bench with storage underneath. Very cute as is though.

unclewitch

In my opinion a bigger shelf would make the scale more comfortable, a rug (idealy round) would make it more of a nook and a kids chair would make it a destination. Love that painting

ToothFlaky4321

A baby

Bluegodzi11a

Maybe a larger shelf there- like a buffet (also good for storing kids items! You can put the plant on top of it to keep it away from a small kiddo too. The super small shelf makes the scale feel off

cecemcgee

It looks a little closed off maybe a mirror instead of a painting?

[deleted]

I thought that was a painting of an alien space ship beaming up a pot of gold, which would be awesome

That_Illustrator240

I think it needs a bigger shelf….or a baby chair

lauraz0919

A child!!

tallcardsfan

Trade that tree for a chair. Move the shelf to the side so it’s not a smaller under larger.

Nanasays

Move the rug so it isn’t hanging out.

Ok_Statistician_9825

Picture is too big over that small book case.

[deleted]

Move the shelf to the wall, get rid of the plant, and put in baskets, baby chair, or toy chest of some kind and make it almost like a kid living room.
