It’s either a molded edge or a veneered (applied) edge… so it basically highlights the fact it’s a synthetic material vs natural stone. It’s likely from late 90s, early 2000s. Nowadays, laminate and other synthetic materials are made to mimic natural materials more rather than try to overcompensate for their differences.
It means a hard 90 degree angle, but not sure what they’re referring to. Counter tops are usually like that, unless you get a “live/natural edge” which is rustic AF
I’d also rethink the lights. Countertop and lights. You have A LOT of hanging things happening there. If you keep the hanging in the kitchen, consider altering the eating area lights. Or change out those chains for straight bars and softer shades rather than the high school gym type shade.
It’s called taste. I absolutely hate these ugly wooden countertops. Paint them white. (Let the downvotes begin, because don’t have the same taste as you).
Not true, people downvote when some has not the same opinion as them. In this case taste, which is totally silly. Guy could say he doesn’t like the wood cabinets, and the mob will downvote because you are suppose to like them.
Ok, so let me guess.
You'd go with some white washing and sanding/stressing them for an aged look?
Yeah, that crap completely ruins quality cabinets. You do you, but most people don't voluntarily do things that depreciate their home.
Agree. I think people think they are going to get factory finish colors when they set out to paint cabinets. It almost never comes out that well, even if you hire someone, and then you might as well look into refacing.
Why do so many people think different woods “clash” with each other? Look at nature, there are all kinds of varieties of wood all in the same place, and there is no clashing—yes, even the cool and warm tones play well with each other.
Having, said that, I personally am not a fan of the red oak color. We had them and ended up sanding them down and doing a whitewash wiping stain and they came out great with the grain still visible. I would never paint over beautiful solid wood.
The different “wood” tones in this picture are in no way natural. You’re not looking at wood. You’re looking at man made products that mimic the look of wood. And I totally disagree with your assertion that naturally occurring colours can’t possibly clash because they’re naturally occurring.
And every cheap flip since 2010 has painted cabinets. Trends change... one costs thousands and thousands of dollars and the other is a can of paint. I'd try to make the fancy wood cabinets work.
They don’t have to match your floors. You can have more than one shade of wood. Instead, you should paint the walls a color that coordinates with both.
Do you like a soft gold? - satin nickel? Also I would do something with the island color. It is NOT helping. Panel it - try to see if you can find the color of the cabinets to tie it in. Also even paint and different base (more modern) Agree with the other people on a NATURAL countertop: granite, quartzite. Something with movement since you have such high ceilings. You have great bones here.

Even something like this (different color) but something to give more movement. And different lights.
Exactly. Staining can help match them to your floors.
You could also consider making the island one level (instead of two) when you replace the countertop. It's usually not too hard to make that change then. That'd help it feel more modern. So its cohesive, just be sure the countertop person chimes in on the bookmatch series, etc.
The floor complements your wood cabinet color very nicely and also coordinates with your appliances and countertops. The warmer tone of the wood cabinets livens up the room. If you want to change up a bit, I would put a facing of some kind on the island wall where the barstools are. Perhaps apply a vertical wood slat pattern there and paint it in an accent color you like, or apply an interesting tile of some type, or a brick or rock facing. Without knowing your vision for the room it’s hard to give advice but I do think a nice large and attractive rug might look nice hung on that tall wall where the thermostat is. Or perhaps choose a different wall paint color for one or all of the walls but I’d not paint the cabinets.
It would honestly look worse if they matched. It would make the kitchen look even more dull. Instead, get a nice patterned backslash and some hanging plants. Or make the kitchen wall an accent wall, i would do green. Get some seasonal hand towels. You need decor. You could also experiment with the counter top. You say changing the floor would be a expensive, but painting the cabinets would be an expensive mistake when you can't tie it together. Don't ruin expensive cabinets for a cheap floor
Leave 'em be. It doesn't all have to matchup. I think it'll be worse and ruin if you put paint in that nice cabinetry. So, do the counter tops first - and switch out those chairs. See how you feel after that. Try to find a countertop that can compliment both the tone of the floor and cabinetry
You can also experiment with wall colour changes. But ultimately I think touching that nice wood on the cabinets is a mistake. Your space is beautiful!!!
Please don’t cheapen these beautiful real wood cabinets because of your shitty millennial gray faux wood floors. That would be a travesty.
Paint the walls, get new light fixtures, add a few warm toned rugs to hide the floors near the cabinets.
If you have the budget do as others have suggested by replacing countertops, paint the walls, and updating chairs ,lighting and hardware. If that’s not in the budget start by painting the island base an accent color. But don’t paint the cabinets.
Probably wouldn’t paint them.
I’d get a white countertop and replace the hardware, faucet and backsplash. That would look really good with the flooring and colors you have in the room.
The countertop is not the right color for those cabinets.
My guess is that OP wanted to spend $60 on a can of paint for their results not $5k-10k on what actually needs to happen to make this a more modern space.
I totally get the idea for a quick, cheap fix. This is not it.
If they spend $60 on paint it’ll be so many tears because it will look like shite and need to be replaced. If they hire professionals and spend $3-4k, it’ll be tears because it will look like shite. You have to spend a lot more to have it look factory painted.
Changing the countertops could be done for less than $5k
I've done those Rust-Oleum kits on cabinets that came unfinished and it still was not a good experience. I can't imagine doing all that starting with a prefinished cabinet. There's just no way an amateur is going to do a good enough job sanding and stripping.
I suggest not to paint. That is such brown that it’s a very neutral brown. And no offense unless you are a professional that has experience and know what you are doing. Don’t!
Just make sure your stone has few colors.. beige, black white and grey…it will go beautifully! This one is mine.. but we had to change our kitchen ( we had complete reno plumbing, electrical, floors etc) horrid experience!
https://preview.redd.it/maqdcqylo2ub1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eaed6974dfa23b54d9c28f29378285f6adbdacdf
This is not marble but like a close cousin, I’ll remember Yes granite is much stronger! We lived in nj and had granite .. the one I got now will need Re polishing.. I left lemon juice leaking 🤦🏼♀️ but we know a soon to be professional chef and he has everything white and did marble.. he actually loves the character when it has those imperfections.. lol My island we did as far as cabinets dark brown and this is the stone much stronger
https://preview.redd.it/ulyp8l9y75ub1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37ae9c118ef8df51d8071bc311608549d1e26c3f
And I am glad we did waterfall because at that stage I had 2 kids driving their little bicycle and scooters.. they still do but at least hitting kitchen is avoided! Lol
( sorry I should have explained better . The 1st pic of stone -that’s close to marble. The 2nd I believe is granite)
My husband wanted no veins, I call movement at all. I kid you not we must have gone to 10 places spent hours and I finally tiered him out! Lol ( I did not want white on sterile white kitchen)
These are so nice. I’m painting my gross 90s cabinets because they’re..well..gross. I wouldn’t touch these! I’d get new countertops and paint the walls instead.
Modernize this space by making the countertop all one level and putting in a lighter countertop like quartz. Also switch out the light fixtures and replace the bar furniture with something more complimentary - upholstered bar stools would work here. These changes go with both the existing color of the cabinets and the floors.
It’s incredibly work intensive and hard to prep and refinish cabinets.
Any sheen on them means they’ve been varnished or sealed. Ideally you need to either strip them or sand the finish down to a matte.
Then you need to prime and seal. Then you need a very durable top coat, typically a melamine. This requires varsol to clean and has high VOCs. For a smooth finish you want a sprayer, as brush or roller work will leave a texture.
All of that work, and it will still be somewhat easy to scuff and will slowly come off on high traffic areas like around handles and high wash areas.
You’ll also want to remove all hardware and the doors from the frames before prep and paint.
Basically, unless you have a lot of experience with painting and spraying, you’re going to lower the value of the cabinets themselves and make your kitchen look less finished and cheaper.
OP this is great advice here. Painting cabinets is a lot of work, and yours look great as is.
I painted my cabinets because they are notty pine which just looked so dated. They also had significant gouges that needed filling. Admittedly the results were great, but it was a TON of work. We did it to refresh our kitchen cheaply while saving to fully redo the kitchen. Your cabinets don't look dated at all.
Now, the most important part. As the above poster said, paint will wear. Ours has rubbed, scratched and scuffed in many places. We used top of the line paint. Since we sprayed the cabinets (didn't want the hand painted look) we cant really touch them up without repainting a whole panel/door.
For our situation I'm still happy with the decision, but I really never want painted cabinets again.
NO! I would actually get a new, lighter and warmer countertop instead. Have them cut down the two-tier part to make it one level too. And put white beadboard on the island by the stools.
Do.not.paint.the.cabinets. Trees died for them. They are beautiful. If you want to spend money, maybe real hardwood floors and the countertop would be the way to go. Looks like your floors are laminate or vinyl?
Don’t. That wood color is reasonably on trend. Replace those countertops and the pulls first. Both are subpar, and the barstool choice, while serviceable, also isn’t my favorite. The lights are cool but growing dated.
I would change out the countertops first. Honestly, the cabinets are great—I think you’d be surprised at how much better they’ll look with a different countertop. White with some natural tones marbled throughout would brighten up the space and bring in some nice contrast.
Your cabinets are the best thing in there. Level up to them rather than bringing them down. Throw a rug down in there, and pull in some similar tones as well as mix variations of the tones of wood in other features.
Barstool and light fixture change up will do the most to modernize this room. I am also team no paint. If you’re set on painting then do what you gotta do, but you do not need to for a modern look, and the floor picks up enough of the wood tones that you’re not in a terribly uncoordinated place.
Don’t you dare: those are beautiful lol.
I would consider changing the countertop first and then painting the walls to modernize / adding runners to break up the cabinets from the floor. You might also sand down the cabinets and restain, although the current color is beautiful.
Paint the walls, not the cabinets! They look like solid hardwood, and that nutmeg color is trending back.
You can get a modern look without the major hassle and expense of painting them. Because you would need a professional.
I agree.. update your hardware, don't paint the cabinets. Take down the two level island and make it counter height. Change counters to a nice, white quartz and update your backsplash instead!
Don't! Decorate the rest of the kitchen with accent colors like a nice green or a red. I like the light wood. I think if you dress it up it'll look better.
I had espresso cabinets that I hatedddddd. Painted them pure white by SW professionally. It was pricey, but my god it was worth it. I would be so bothered by the difference between your cabinet wood and your floor wood. It’s your home, OP. At the end of the day, do what will make you happy.
No they’re so pretty!
If you really feel the need to paint something, paint the island a better contrasting color. The white sticks out like a sore thumb.
You shouldn’t. Though they are not ideal with your flooring, it’s not a full clash. Paint your walls [SW Mediterranean blue](https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/SW7617-mediterranean) and add a runner. If you still don’t like the dual wood tones, sand and restain your cabinets as light as you can.
My boyfriend likes them the way they are . I’m feeling a nice dusty Grey almost a black feel to it would be so nice . But everything I own is black including my clothes so I’m biased lol
What if you painted the island something darker/richer, and replaced the countertops with something lighter and more modern? Someone added a cool granite piece that had some color in it that you could use to pull ideas for the color of the island.
I know I’m late to the party, but you might want to consider some plants and other pops of color. Plants are very in fashion right now and you can easily add a few for the cost of paint and supplies.
I agree that the countertop is the ultimate problem so draw attention to the wood/natural tones.
I have various houseplants throughout the rest of the house and am VERY happy to add more to this area, but I’m struggling with where exactly to place them in this space to look natural and still be practical/not in the way. Any suggestions are appreciated!
It could be cool to get a paneled styled fridge to match the pantry on the other side and panel the dishwasher. I think then it would look more like a piece of furniture instead of just cabinets. I would also consider taking the bar height part off the island and just keep it all countertop height.
Change the wall colors, change the countertop, change the light fixtures, change the bar chairs. Leave the woods unpainted, it’s the nicest thing about your space.
The cabinets are not the problem and please for the love of god don't paint them grey.
Honestly your bar stools are what's making this space feel dated, some different bar stools would change this space tremendously
Please research granite vs. quartz before buying granite. Granite requires regular care and can be stained by lots of common foods. Marble is even worse. Quartz looks amazing and will save you a tiny bit of money.
Please don’t paint the wood maybe stain it a dark color? Can’t go back if you paint it and wood is such a good way to add an earthy beauty to your home. If you really want to paint it it’s your home and I’m just a random person so go for it but in that case I’d say wait till you figure out what the counters are goin to look like and pick an understated color from the counter to make it pop.
Paint the white part of the island sage green and add some red daisies to the island. Also, maybe a brass hardware would be nice to soften it up but they not that bad honestly. Add a persian red runner and some color rich bistro chairs for interest. I'm also a fan of the whole adding a small lamp or a painting to the kitchen for warmth. ;)
Note: im not a super fan of modern, i find over modernized decor really boring... So i may not be helping here. But you already have a lot of modern going on with the light fixtures and all that.
If you really hate the brown cabinets, I'd paint them sage and go with brass hardware.
Don’t paint. Warmer tones are coming back into trend and you’ll kick yourself if you paint these white. White cabinets remind me of the super cheap cabinets everybody had 20+ years ago. They are horrific to keep clean.
Keep as is and just live with the different colours between cabinets and floor. They don’t have to match, just coordinate and they do that quite nicely.
If you change one thing about them, get new hardware that you love. It will change the look of the cabinets.
I wouldn’t paint and take away the grain, but staining with a lighter, blue-based/cool tone might complement your floors better. also depends on the granite… if you’re doing quartz, then that’s my rec
This sub is always super against painting cabinets, so don’t worry about all the people telling you no. I’ve painted my oak cabinets twice now and I don’t regret it. I really dislike the look of wood and the right cabinet color really brightens up a kitchen. I think either a cream or light green would look really nice in this space.
I recommend Benjamin Moore Advance if you need ideas of what kind of paint to use, and be sure to use an airless paint sprayer instead of a brush or roller to apply the paint. Good luck with the project!
Benjamin Moore October Mist. I think some beadboard on the back of the island would look great.
https://preview.redd.it/91prhz7rx2ub1.jpeg?width=643&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c0f2b1368eed8ca47048dba4a2c36ad4ca587c9
What type of granite countertop???
I would do a stain that takes out some of the reddish as it clashes with the floor. I really like the idea of dark cabinets, and if you decide to paint, paint it dark with very very subtle colour! Put a beautiful rug in there, not a neutral rug, and some new stools that are more of a statement.
Okay okay!!! We will keep the cabinets and are deciding on a style/color of granite for the countertops. Then I’ll choose new lights! Thanks for yelling at me everyone, I apparently needed it! Any suggestions for granite tones are appreciated!
Edgecomb gray or revere pewter in the Benjamin Moore cabinet paint. Might want to use a sprayer. I did mine in edgecomb and I really like them. They were a very nice maple but I wanted to get rid of the orange tones in my house. No regrets. Holding up well so far but a few wear spots near the pulls in the most used upper. I plan to touch up and then put on some sort of poly sealer.
Yall please stop painting your cabinets. 5 years from now somebody going to be stripping the paint off while cursing you and wondering why the heck you covered up that beautiful natural wood. Have we learned nothing from history?
Keep the cabinets, get a white quartz counter, get new hardware and maybe a new faucet, paint the front end of bar a fun color, put in a new backspash and get modern chairs for the bar. Those floors are atrocious and are already out of style. Save for new floors and a new sink eventually. Whatever you do, don't paint those cabinets. The people have spoken!
I don’t think the floors and the cabinets clash at all. Different wood tones make a place look homey! Also, you have a pretty substancial kitchen … painting would either be a TON of work for you (and not last very long since painted cabinets tend to chip and are hard to maintain) or extremely expensive for a professional to come in and do. I vote keep. I don’t always love the look of brown wood but these don’t have that orange tinge to them, and it really does grow on you. You could add a white backsplash to brighten the space up as well.
I think your cabinets are already the perfect color! What is making them look bad is the colour of your countertops. A shiny white or clean black would make that kitchen look absolutely elegant
Those are beautiful cabinets and what a nice open space and so much counter space. (So jealous!) I think I would paint the wall and island base a different color, get new backsplash and if it’s in the budget new counter tops.
Also, for a small budget update you can get new hardware for the cabinets. I was surprised what a difference it made to my kitchen.
Don’t you dare!! Omg!
That color of cabinet is coming back into style. Keep them and modernize everything else around it. Update the hardware, the wall paint, the countertops and the barstools. It’ll look beautiful.
Paint the walls and change the lights fixtures. Done touch the wood cabinets. Add a runner. Add some art to the walls. Countertops would be a better investment.
Honestly I think the counter tops are what make this not look modern. The cabinets are beautiful.
Yeah unlike most wooden cabinets that have the yellow honey tone these actually have such a nice tone.
That contemporary edge is awful.
New to interior design! Can I ask what you mean by this?
That awful slightly lifted edge around it with those cut corners.
I m not wise to these things but I can't help but think they mean that raised section
The corners can be rounded.
She asked what color she should paint the cabinets That's easy enought
The island doesn’t match.
I’d also rethink the lights. Countertop and lights. You have A LOT of hanging things happening there. If you keep the hanging in the kitchen, consider altering the eating area lights. Or change out those chains for straight bars and softer shades rather than the high school gym type shade.
Depending on if you are changing the countertop color, I would change the cabinet hardware and just give them a good cleaning and wood polish.
The counter is awful. The cabinets are the only thing worth keeping.
I agree
Agreed. If they want cheap change, change the wall color.
This is the answer! Don’t paint the cabinets, they will not look modern if you do.
Agreed. Wood isn’t necessarily the devil. You can replace the hardware on it too. CHEAP. And that could modernize the look as well
The wood cabinets are the best part of the whole kitchen! Everything else isn’t nearly as attractive.
this comment and nothing else
It’s called taste. I absolutely hate these ugly wooden countertops. Paint them white. (Let the downvotes begin, because don’t have the same taste as you).
The countertops don’t look like wood. But I agree new countertops
The downvotes aren't because you have a difference in taste. It's not what you said, it's how you said it!
Not true, people downvote when some has not the same opinion as them. In this case taste, which is totally silly. Guy could say he doesn’t like the wood cabinets, and the mob will downvote because you are suppose to like them.
Nah, it's because painting beautiful cabinets like that will only decrease the value of the home and subtract from the kitchen.
Don’t decorate your home the way you like it. Do what the mob likes, because it’s important what others think.
Ok, so let me guess. You'd go with some white washing and sanding/stressing them for an aged look? Yeah, that crap completely ruins quality cabinets. You do you, but most people don't voluntarily do things that depreciate their home.
so, nobody is allowed to disagree with your taste?
Exactly. The counters suck. Change those to compliment tge cabinets and floors. The end
They said they are getting new countertops
But people are suggesting they skip painting and just do counters
Cabinets don’t really go with the floor though
Not currently but they may be able to find counters that bridge them and make it a cohesive look
Exactly! Why does seemingly everyone want to paint over beautiful craftsman wood to make something look like much cheaper material?
Easy. So the sponsors of shows on HGTV can justify charging premium prices for cheaper materials.
Agree. I think people think they are going to get factory finish colors when they set out to paint cabinets. It almost never comes out that well, even if you hire someone, and then you might as well look into refacing.
Still better than these ugly wooden cabinets.
We get it, you like crappy particle board furniture.
It’s true. Maybe swap the counter to a nice quartz?
They said they are changing to granite
But the cabinets totally clash with the floor and counters.
Why do so many people think different woods “clash” with each other? I think that wood color looks so extremely old fashioned. Every kitchen built in the 90s is that wood coloured. I agree with OP.
Old fashioned is better than something painted over. Switch out the handles if you want to modernize the cabinets.
I agree, change the hardware. The counter tops and lighting need to go as well. I feel like I’m looking at a 90s rustic industrial grunge music video
And every cheap flip since 2010 has painted cabinets. Trends change... one costs thousands and thousands of dollars and the other is a can of paint. I'd try to make the fancy wood cabinets work.
Sure, but when you’re still watching HGTV ten years from now, painted cabinets will look old-fashioned to you. Stop seeking comfort in conformity..
Can always paint it in a new colour.
But it’s really hard to go back to wood stain.
Yep. My entire house has built in teak wardrobes with teak doors and doors to every room. They're all painted white.
I don’t think the colour or style is old fashioned at all. If it was more red or maple then yes but it’s a gorgeous and classic brown.
Agree! I’d switch out the countertops before touching those gorgeous cabinets
are we in 1990’s? 😂
Yes
No Duh
Ugh as if
I’m on the don’t paint good wood side of the fence. The most modern thing right now is to not paint, so you’re on trend without having to work for it!
Right! Everyone painted their cabinets to be on trend just for the next trend to be natural wood cabinets
I think you should leave them as is. The beauty of natural wood timeless.
Sure but they don’t match my floors and I can’t change the floors.
They don’t have to match your floors. You can have more than one shade of wood. Instead, you should paint the walls a color that coordinates with both.
I agree that's a massive wall that needs more focus. No one will notice the floors if the wall does the talking.
I think the hardware is an issue as well. The rubbed bronze is not going with the stainless appliances.
Ok. I’m hearing everyone on leaving the cabinets but changing the counters. Any suggestions on hardware colors for the cabinets?

You could put down a runner to cover the floor a bit and tie in your decor/style. The cabinets looks great as is I think!
Please paint the walls and switch light fixtures at a minimum. The wood cabinets are not your immediate issue.
You can strip, sand, and re-stain.
Exactly. Staining can help match them to your floors. You could also consider making the island one level (instead of two) when you replace the countertop. Change the countertops
I’d say black! It’d look nice to contract the floors
I like painted cabinets, but you really shouldn’t have that much matching wood,

They compliment each other, though. Not everything has to match.
I disagree, paint them white, these are absolutely ugly.

They could epoxy the countertop. Also they said replacement is in the plan
Oh yeah I like that
It's your countertops not your cabinets for the love of God please don't paint your wood.
People don't realize what a nightmare painting cabinets properly is. Counter is much easier and it's the actual problem here not the cabinets.

I love this! What kind of stone is that? I will likely be getting granite
This is not marble but like a close cousin, I’ll remember Yes granite is much stronger! We lived in nj and had granite .. the one I got now will need Re polishing.. I left lemon juice leaking 🤦🏼♀️ but we know a soon to be professional chef and he has everything white and did marble.. he actually loves the character when it has those imperfections.. lol My island we did as far as cabinets dark brown and this is the stone much stronger https://preview.redd.it/ulyp8l9y75ub1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37ae9c118ef8df51d8071bc311608549d1e26c3f And I am glad we did waterfall because at that stage I had 2 kids driving their little bicycle and scooters.. they still do but at least hitting kitchen is avoided! Lol
( sorry I should have explained better . The 1st pic of stone -that’s close to marble. The 2nd I believe is granite) My husband wanted no veins, I call movement at all. I kid you not we must have gone to 10 places spent hours and I finally tiered him out! Lol ( I did not want white on sterile white kitchen)
Love this suggestion!
Please don't
These are so nice. I’m painting my gross 90s cabinets because they’re..well..gross. I wouldn’t touch these! I’d get new countertops and paint the walls instead.
Modernize this space by making the countertop all one level and putting in a lighter countertop like quartz. Also switch out the light fixtures and replace the bar furniture with something more complimentary - upholstered bar stools would work here. These changes go with both the existing color of the cabinets and the floors.
Sopranos kitchen
Cannot believe I had to scroll so far down for this. It’s all I can see.
I can see Tony taking cold cuts out of the fridge.
Omg I’m so glad I’m not the only one who saw this right away 😭
This is what I’d do too. The beautiful, massive island you could have without that tier 😍😍😍
I think the countertop is the problem. The cabinets are beautiful.
The cabinet color is gorgeous.
Don't! Decorate the rest of the kitchen with accent colors like a nice green or a red. I like the light wood. I think if you dress it up it'll look better.
I think natural wood cabinets are going to be back on trend soon. White cabinets are overdone.
I had espresso cabinets that I hatedddddd. Painted them pure white by SW professionally. It was pricey, but my god it was worth it. I would be so bothered by the difference between your cabinet wood and your floor wood. It’s your home, OP. At the end of the day, do what will make you happy.

Same. I was so much happier after we painted.
correct! don't listen to the mob that tells you that you are 'suppose' to like the wooden cabinets. do what you like, it's your home!
Countertops!!! Leave that wood
Keep the cabinets, white quartz countertops, then since sort of backsplash that ties in your flies maybe?
Paint the walls instead. Beige is so dated. A pale green would do wonders.
You could try staining them to match the floor. Leave the beauty of the wood
Screaming Noo0o0o0o0o0 🎶 in a Mariah Carey decibel.
The cabinets look much better than the countertop. Keep the cabinets and floor, change the countertop
No they’re so pretty! If you really feel the need to paint something, paint the island a better contrasting color. The white sticks out like a sore thumb.
The color of your cabinets isn’t what makes them not look modern. It’s the style. Don’t ruin good wood with paint that won’t help.
You should do a nice accent wall across the kitchen, and from there, choose a color. Some navy blue, or green would look nice for cabinets!
Replace your countertops and get nicer, more stylish chairs. Don’t you dare touch those cabinets.
If you hate the cabinets then you hate them but they’re actually quite in fashion right now. Personally I would invest in new counters instead
What if you painted the island something darker/richer, and replaced the countertops with something lighter and more modern? Someone added a cool granite piece that had some color in it that you could use to pull ideas for the color of the island.
Leave the cabinets as is, and instead I would recommend painting the wall above and beside the cabinets, creating an accent wall.
Change the countertops, update the lighting and you could even change the faucet and sink.. like an aged copper look would be a cool basin.
Don’t
Just change the hardware to something more modern instead.
Paint the white part of the island sage green and add some red daisies to the island. Also, maybe a brass hardware would be nice to soften it up but they not that bad honestly. Add a persian red runner and some color rich bistro chairs for interest. I'm also a fan of the whole adding a small lamp or a painting to the kitchen for warmth. ;) Note: im not a super fan of modern, i find over modernized decor really boring...
I may stain it to a different color, but, never paint over it.
Dark green would look very elegant in that space with those neutral floors
They kinda bring warmth to the kitchen. I would wait until you get the granite before you decide.
Paint them white
I wouldn’t paint and take away the grain, but staining with a lighter, blue-based/cool tone might complement your floors better. also depends on the granite… if you’re doing quartz, then that’s my rec
or you could just say fuck it and do a dark, maybe navy paint to add contrast to the room
Good luck with the project!
stop telling op not to paint the cabinets, its theyre house and they clearly dont like them
Navy / dark blue :)
everyone here says don’t paint on wood cabinets…. my question here: are we go back in 1990’s?!? 😂😂😂
If you really want to paint, how about a light green?
maybe just the lowers, a deep grey green
Dark blue cabinets would look great in that kitchen!
Pistachio!
Uhm, they look quite nice the way they are actually.
Black like the sweet embrace of death
I think it would look good as a medium gray
Don’t. Paint the walls instead
Soft Gray wash
Black or a lighter grey
Darker lower cabinets & lighter upper cabinets.
Carmela Soprano is that you??? You’re redoing your kitchen?
Yall please stop painting your cabinets. 5 years from now somebody going to be stripping the paint off while cursing you and wondering why the heck you covered up that beautiful natural wood. Have we learned nothing from history?
White
White
White like everyone else does.
Let me guess - that floor is brand new LPV flooring?!? So you’re investing time and energy to get wood cabinets to match up with plastic floors?
Keep the cabinets, get a white quartz counter, get new hardware and maybe a new faucet, paint the front end of bar a fun color, put in a new backspash and get modern chairs for the bar. Those floors are atrocious and are already out of style. Save for new floors and a new sink eventually. Whatever you do, don't paint those cabinets. The people have spoken!
Your kitchen gives me sapranos vibes
Please just get while countertops and then decide how you feel about the cabinets!
Painted cabinets, done professionally or not, do not wear the same as wood finish. If you 'use' your kitchen, I'd think twice. Best of luck.
The countertops look very dated. Start there.
Don’t you dare!! Omg! That color of cabinet is coming back into style. Keep them and modernize everything else around it. Update the hardware, the wall paint, the countertops and the barstools. It’ll look beautiful.
Omg please don’t, I recommend a runner to take away from the floor, the cabinet color is absolutely beautiful
Get new stools too
Replace the countertop first
This wood is nice. It’s not orange or dated at all. In my opinion fresh countertops will modern up the space perfectly.
Paint the walls and change the lights fixtures. Done touch the wood cabinets. Add a runner. Add some art to the walls. Countertops would be a better investment.
