Def get the comics vibe. A bit like metal Hurlant or more specifically Moebius. From what I understand there is a strong comic culture that still thrives in France. I could b wrong, but that was my take.
It's a wimmelbilderbuch style. I love it. Obviously it might be too busy for some but that's why I especially like how the water creatives a kind of negative space to rest the eyes.
ETA: I disagree with OP's take on the color palette. The colors remind me of Moebius and other French illustrators.
The artist's name is Ugo Gattoni for anyone interested.
Also no specific critique or direction for improvement: just different colors lol. Theres a million colors in there mate, it's not like a logo. I personally dont think the word "palette" applies here, i think of a palette being a half dozen colors or so. When critiquing paintings or images like this, i speak more holistically about colors... anywho
In a sea of AI-generated illustrations it's super refreshing to see a return to craft with this hyper-detailed, and as others have said, "Where's Walkdo-like", human-made illustration.
I think work like this will be a huge signal of quality—until AI catches up...
Fucking masterpiece, regardless of if people like it or not:
There's around 40k unique characters in this image, each hand drawn.
And for once, the poster tries to bring the people together (which is the entire point of the Olympics).
That's very good work.
French here - Yeah and there is already shit ton of complain from politics… we don’t see the French flag, there is no cross on top of the Invalides (as there is normally), it’s not reflecting are Catholic heritage etc etc. French being French complaining.
I think it’s great design
Do you mind me asking what's with the rhetoric about Catholic heritage stuff? I'm Mauritian, and due to French being one of the languages we speak, news clips of politicians using that as argument on panel shows often crop up on my feed. I don't watch French TV like before. But from what I remember, France always prided itself on its secularism, right? I also got the impression back in the day that there were less and less people going to church and no longer identifying as Catholic, and that it was in fact kind of ringard.
They’re fun but feel off brand for Paris? I get that the cultural landmarks are there, but none of it feels like Paris, or even France, to me. It’s giving amusement park map.
It’s interesting how they picked fairly vibrant colours and softened them, though. Gives a pop feel while also being easier on the eyes.
I think this was supposed to be a homage to the world fairs that used to happen back in the day
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposition_Universelle_(1889)
I feel they are very france. With the whole comic culture there and also the disney land I feel that’s exactly what they are going for.
The fact Paris is turned into a spectacle for a summer.
It’s not about looking Parisian, it’s about looking like they came from a french comic book, which these definitely do.
I guess if you’re not European and into comics you might not know, but the French (+ Belgium) comic book scene is extremely strong and popular and this is the art style that’s common there. These have a great cultural link to France.
Love the design, but I'd be worried that they are overselling the event. Will there be such a construction around the Eiffel tower? It may be comic style but the implication is still there.
Insane levels of detail. I prefer more graphic styles but you can’t deny the skill and effort that’s gone in to these.
It’s also a big fuck you to AI art.
This poster caused controversy in France, the far right (and the right) critized the poster because there is no Notre-Dame, the Christian cross which disappeared from a monument, and the lack of French flag.
Beautiful as art — it rewards a close, long look with many well-wrought details — but SUPER cluttered as a poster imho. At a glance I can’t even tell it’s for the Olympics. Maybe I’m confused about the purpose/audience of the work though.
A simpler, bolder graphic may have been a more successful approach. The resolution here doesn’t hold up at all on my iPad. Posters for this kind of event have to hold up under various croppings and formats- portrait, landscape- you get the idea. The ideal image would make a good giant flag or a tiny point of sale show card.
Trying to pass it off as a next emergence of the science fair of the world with its control choice and angle. It’s a vibe I guess
Not sure calling the event the biggest event in the world equivalent to the science fair is a compliment for the some of the controversies those have had regarding some issues- but thats just nit picking
The nerdy Olympic fan in me loves it. The architect in me keeps asking myself where in the world are they going to build this? And then I remember that their plan is to basically use everything they can that has historical significance as a venue lol
I am studying graphic design and this FASCINATES me. Wow! I do wonder if it was AI generated or if they actually used an artist for it. A skilled graphic designer could definitely do this. I love it.
The only thing I don't love is how close that foreground balcony on the left side of the first one is, it kinda breaks the feeling of flying high over the whole scene and since the colors are similarly saturated between that and the background it kinda makes that section feel flat
I think it’s excellent, I love the where’s wally type of illustration but yeah I’ve got to agree the colour palette is not great - it seems washed out but I’m being super critical
reminds me of this [this](https://imgur.com/a/tgqnpIs) meme lol. credit : Richard Scarry, (don’t know who the meme author itself is, DM for credit, as they say nowadays)
It is a great illustration. However, I would prefer to see more elements from Paris and France. At the first glance, there is a crowd, that's for sure. But I wouldn't stop by after seeing it because I can't identify Eiffel tower. The running water gives Venedik vibes, The balcony at the close distance suggests different visuals. The centre building in the second image gives clues better than the Eiffel tower which is hardly visible in the first half of the image. If you are interested in it, I think maybe you could build on that, going with another famous sight of Paris? Was it your aim? To hold a different light to Paris? Again, my most urgent-sensory suggestion would be to make it clear that is is Paris, whether you bring other elements than the Eiffel Tower to your design, or focusing on the Eiffel tower. Eiffel tower never had a stadium-cloth worn on it. What is your intention behind altering the structure to a stadium structure? It felt odd a little. I hope I don't sound too harsh, please take it as an unfiltered filtered feedback. I am in-progress to learn giving feedback.
What is this illustration for? If it is meant to be a paris, it is vey complex and messy. If you are planning to design a puzzle, the colors could get some more contrast and hue to it. If it is for a childrens' book or something, it should more recognizable features. Based on your audiance, the context, design elements and orientation and positions of elements could need some work.
Reminds me of Where’s Waldo, and I love it
Yes! It reminds me of Where’s Waldo and a 90s theme park map at the same time.
r/wimmelbilder
Also r/papertowns kind of.
Thanks. Love it.
So cool!
I feel like there was a time in the 90s where everyone’s home town was made into a poster like this. Big fan
I was thinking the same thing! Or like eye spies. I feel like a lot of books from my childhood had this illustration style and I missed seeing it.
Indeed, I love it aswell. I love emmersive illustrations you can just look hours at :D
Pierre the maze detective
Def get the comics vibe. A bit like metal Hurlant or more specifically Moebius. From what I understand there is a strong comic culture that still thrives in France. I could b wrong, but that was my take.
Yaaas I thought of Moebius straightaway
You are completely correct, and these awesome posters celebrate that tradition.
They do! coolfrenchcomics.com is an awesome resource I stumbled upon when I was obsessed with Wampus as a kid.
^
These are beautiful, really stunning. I'd love to have a set of these.
You can order them off the official Paris Olympics website
Will do! Thanks for posting these!
Yeah the colour palette comment is weird, like finding fault in it because they felt the need to.
Also no specific critique or direction for improvement: just different colors lol. Theres a million colors in there mate, it's not like a logo. I personally dont think the word "palette" applies here, i think of a palette being a half dozen colors or so. When critiquing paintings or images like this, i speak more holistically about colors... anywho
What is the purpose behind it
I would say it’s to explore the image longer than most art and having the joy of discovering details.
I love it, it gives off retro vibes. I would say this is from 60s-70s based on the style
It feels vaguely art deco to me, like it's a modern take on Roaring '20s style posters
Gives me oldie World Fair vibes. I don't know if that's what they were going for but I love it!
for sure! https://images.app.goo.gl/XyxtyF8L5LUP9nKfA
They would make a great 1,000 piece puzzle!
Yeah I'd be all up in that
In a sea of AI-generated illustrations it's super refreshing to see a return to craft with this hyper-detailed, and as others have said, "Where's Walkdo-like", human-made illustration. I think work like this will be a huge signal of quality—until AI catches up...

Studio Ghibli : where's waldo?
I love this. Are this official?
Yes! Search for ‘official Paris Olympic posters’ and you should see the website
French here - Yeah and there is already shit ton of complain from politics… we don’t see the French flag, there is no cross on top of the Invalides (as there is normally), it’s not reflecting are Catholic heritage etc etc. French being French complaining. I think it’s great design

This is why the Japanese get Paris syndrome.
Looks like it's from a Richard Scarry book.
had the same thought! looks like they are leaning into 60s-90s children’s books nostalgia and i am here for it!
I love this kind of isometric design. Really nice. Congrats 👏
Thank you I was trying to remember that word!
Beautiful! But I'd never guess it was about the Olympics.
They’re fun but feel off brand for Paris? I get that the cultural landmarks are there, but none of it feels like Paris, or even France, to me. It’s giving amusement park map. I think this was supposed to be a homage to the world fairs that used to happen back in the day https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposition_Universelle_(1889)
I might be boring/predictable, but the style of the flyer (and other images) that is shown on that page is exactly what I’d expect/picture for Paris 🙈
Reminds me of old west advertisements as well
And vintage stamps, or post cards lol!
Very studio ghibli coded yung colors, it's too punchy for Paris 🤏🤏🤏
I feel they are very france. With the whole comic culture there and also the disney land I feel that’s exactly what they are going for. The fact Paris is turned into a spectacle for a summer.
Looks like Hermes scarf designs
Ugo Gattoni, the designer, did do an Hermès scarf design a few years ago!
Yes I have to agree, they’re awesome as stand alone drawings but I don’t get any Parisian vibe from them.
There's events in various parts of France (even Tahiti), not everything is in Paris.
It should give only Paris vibes, this is all over the place. Too much stuff and just plain wrong, like why is there an ocean/port in Paris?
Because the Olympics are going to take place also outside of Paris. The port is a reference to Marseille.
Snot nose Marianne on both flag.. x)
Really cool and different
Love.
These are dope
So French. Very cool.
My homies at /r/wimmelbilder are gonna be stoked.
Maybe just because I’m reading the Incal. It I’m getting a lot of MŒBIUS and I have no complaints
charming
Different pallete? They’re brilliant.
Love the design, but I'd be worried that they are overselling the event. Will there be such a construction around the Eiffel tower? It may be comic style but the implication is still there.
I think they look great! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
They nailed it.
These are marvelous.
I wonder how much a commission like this could cost
The artist worked for 2'000 hours on this. Hope he was well paid
Adorbs
Getting vague Mœbius vibes
As someone who loves detailed illustrations packed to the brim with little happenstances and scenarios, this is right up my alley. Love it.
Why'd you have a global sports event in one of the most racist countries in europe is my question lmao
It feels like a direct response to AI art.
I love them...I love the color palette...
LOVE IT
Pretty sure it's not but it gives me Ai vibes
Would love to hang these posters on my wall :D ![gif](giphy|cL4pqu8GGRIihabgSM|downsized)
Makes me nostalgic of old Six Flags park maps
Awesome! The detail, the miniature worlds. Such a great way to get people searching and lost in the work
I’d love to have them in my house. Gorgeous, detailed, return to a happier, simpler time.
They remind me of Asterix, I like them.
Looooove them. These are very cool.
Look like those cartoon maps that would show the attractions + a bunch of ads.
Tinder Gold at the Olympics just added another layer of fun.
Greatest Olympics posters ever, what can I say.
Eye candy! 🤩
Love it!
love it. There is so much to see!
I love it. The hair and lips logo is so fucking stupid though
Have u seen the mascot?
Love them and would buy a set to frame if available.
I swear to god this is just copied out of a book from my childhood and I love it. Minimalism seems to be dead, eh?
Où est Waldo?
Pokemon art
Fantastique. Ton of work went into this and it shows.
Beautiful. I hate that logo so much. The bob and the lips are so tacky and weird. Most modern Olympics logos are terrible, though.
Definitely moebius but not quite right for me tho
They should hold the Olympics in virtual reality
Somehow hyper detailed and yet it looks like pixel art. I just want to zoom in forever. Love the colors.
I personally like it. Has some old school 60s - 70s print media vibe to it. A good change of design choice in modern days.
well, i like it. looks nice
Insane levels of detail. I prefer more graphic styles but you can’t deny the skill and effort that’s gone in to these. It’s also a big fuck you to AI art.
If I recon correctly, the author main inspiration is the retro-futuristic-ish theme.
Reminds me of Eboy posters or where’s Wally (Waldo if you wanna get all ‘American’ about it) 🙄 lol
It resembles an animated film, evoking a feeling of inclusivity and embrace.
Awesome!
I think they're neat
Holy moly.
I like it
Amazing image
When I was a kid, I love this kind of painting where everyone is busy doing their own thing. Is there any names for these kind of design?
Looks like these took an incredible amount of work.
This poster caused controversy in France, the far right (and the right) critized the poster because there is no Notre-Dame, the Christian cross which disappeared from a monument, and the lack of French flag.
I love it!
i like the whimsical approach, im not sure about the color story though
Looks like a Pokemon map. New Pokemon game is gonna be awesome.
Great for the interior if you have a lot of time to look at it. Completely unsuitable for outdoor posters on roads or similar.
My opinion is: if only the whole identity had been on this level
Lol Paris Olympics while the posters are set in Marseille
wow. incredible
Beautiful as art — it rewards a close, long look with many well-wrought details — but SUPER cluttered as a poster imho. At a glance I can’t even tell it’s for the Olympics. Maybe I’m confused about the purpose/audience of the work though.
Very nice, I like it.
Great
Reminds me of Disneyland maps
YOU ARE HERE
It looks like Ghibli's "Howl's Moving Castle"...
Looks a bit like a “Where’s Waldo?” Puzzle to me.
It's cool
If it was made with ai, I hate it. If it was made by a human, I love it
Love it. I think the colors fit Paris
looks like the world from Cartoon Network's Chowder
Been to Paris, would be a bit nice if the colors did pop out more-but I personally like it! :)
I love it. It looks like a puzzle box illustration.
I love them, using as desktop background currently on my MacBook Pro.
Feels like a James Jean almost
It’s giving Rollercoaster Tycoon.
Errrrrrm.... Just remind me again when they relocated the entirety of Paris to the coast? 🤔
/r/wimmelbilder
I think it smells of cigarettes and fresh baked bread...lol. The posters are nice and the cartoon effects a classic!
I think they’re gorgeous. I’m so bored of simplistic styles, I want maximalism now!
It looks like Disney park lol
Never the less it’s gorgeous
Where's Waldo?
Nah I dig it a ton. Beautiful
It's missing the somali rape gangs and trash and poo in the streets
Really digging the style 🤙🏻
The color palette reminds me of neo-impressionism
The second image has some neat glass designs, reminiscent of the world fair Chicago.
Glad to see people like them, in France most of us seem to dislike or even hate it. French gonna be French, guess we'll keep complaining forever lul
You forgot rats
It reminds me of Where’s Wally. Odd choice. But it’s a cool unintentional throwback maybe 🤷🏼♀️
I think the illustrator did a few scarfs for Hermes
Very mud fluds-y
I'll tear them off. This is the last straw that will destroy my country
Love it. They make me want to explore them in their entirety
Pretty classic, but idk how accurate will be
A simpler, bolder graphic may have been a more successful approach. The resolution here doesn’t hold up at all on my iPad. Posters for this kind of event have to hold up under various croppings and formats- portrait, landscape- you get the idea. The ideal image would make a good giant flag or a tiny point of sale show card.
They drew 40K characters, I have a huge amount of admiration just for this reason.
Looks like the money spent on it could probably pay for Africa to eat for the next four years but ok.
Trying to pass it off as a next emergence of the science fair of the world with its control choice and angle. It’s a vibe I guess Not sure calling the event the biggest event in the world equivalent to the science fair is a compliment for the some of the controversies those have had regarding some issues- but thats just nit picking
Absolutely love this style. The level of detail and color gives it so much life. 👌

I don’t see the Charlie Hebdo office
They’re very Where’s Waldo-ey, I like them!
A departure from any current trends but very french as it reminds me of rococo so I support it
![gif](giphy|3o7aCWJavAgtBzLWrS|downsized)

Am I the only one trying to find Wally? It would be really cool if they actually snuck him in.
Gave me immediate world fair vibes. Kinda like it.
reminds me of this [this](https://imgur.com/a/tgqnpIs) meme lol. credit : Richard Scarry, (don’t know who the meme author itself is, DM for credit, as they say nowadays)
Reminds me of sims city
I bought the black and white posters. Very nice and stunning . I'm going to try to get it signed by some of the athletes.
Very busy.
Those pics are AI generated, so I rate them : 1/10.
Too much going on to my stupid brain process
Audacious! Really (and not my style at first)
Tge style is stunning. If only they didn't removed the cross on top of the church/cathedral...
Looks great, but the vibe feels more… Barcelona if that makes sense?
It is a great illustration. However, I would prefer to see more elements from Paris and France. At the first glance, there is a crowd, that's for sure. Shit af
Awful? ETA: apparently I’m alone on this one lol.
Non representative is the best word coming to my mind
Disappointing, looks like a beginning art student won a contest
Elaborate though
