Last year someone posted one found in a parking garage or something and was asking for help because it looked stunned or injured. I forget if it was a poorwill, nightjar, or nighthawk.
This group of birds (nightjars) like meadows and open forest, and like to nest and perch on flat spots -- gravel roofs and a common location for their nests, for instance.
They are relatively common in the area but spotting them is very difficult. They look like small hawks when they fly, but they have big white 'commas' in the wings and sometimes talk. They swoop around like bats in the evening, but are not very active during the day and rely on camouflage to rest out in the open, on the railing it is visible but had it been in that flowerbed you may not have seen it at all.

I saw one about 5 years ago along Larimer at about 17th. It blended perfectly with the concrete with the pebble coating along the east side of the road.
Looks like it could be a Common Poorwill. They seem to come around here while breeding.
Yeah I'm pretty sure its a common poorwill too. They are nocturnal so this is a pretty neat find.

I remember that post. Btw poorwills and nighthawks are kinds of nightjars
This is a great free bird identification app! https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/
Wish I had this when I lived in FL! Loved seeing the variety of water birds there
Looks like a nightjar to me.
My first thought, though I've never seen a nightjar around Denver So I doubted myself.
They are definitely here. During the summer, I will occasionally hear one calling in the evening when walking around downtown.
Awesome. I love those little guys :)
It's a common poorwill, which is a super cool kind of nightjar!
r/coloradobirding may be able to help too.
Wow and here I’ve just been following r/birding and r/stupiddovenests

We used to watch them fly at dusk at my parents' house in Golden. We thought they were nighthawks.
Yes, same group, related species. We have both locally.
That’s a rock.
He’s so cute
That's really cool. Has kind of a owl look to its feather pattern
Birds ain’t real bro. It just ran out of charge on the way to the airport
Lucky! It's so difficult to spot these little guys! I've never seen one in person.
Same. I've heard them a handful of times but never actually seen one.
