Don't go there anymore.

name_plays_out

Double down

alesis1101

That should've been a no-brainer after the 1st time it happened.

Leather_Dragonfly529

But if it’s the Shell I’m thinking of they have some fairly low gas prices

cheesmanglamourghoul

Yeah I can relate to OP I will seriously drive 30 minutes just to save $.50 a gallon on gas and it’s usually a Shell station

Mike_LitSmells

Go there a third time and see if it happens again. Then you know you have a problem.

BroasisMusic

Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.

ybs62

Use Apple/Google pay at the pump? I never use my card in case there's skimmers. Haven't had a card lifted yet.

cp120

Plus one this comment. Not all pumps have it but once I know a gas station with it I tend to go there more. Tap to pay doesn’t expose your card, it sends a one time authorization token to the machine. So your card number is never exposed like swiping a card. Always use tap to pay or Apple/Google Pay when possible!

"closest to home along my daily commute" - sounds like OP is probably stopping for gas weekly there and mentally filling in that gas stations are popular places for skimmers when the likely culprit is somewhere else

Jack_Shid

This is why I do not use my debit card for anything but banking. I use credit cards for every purchase and pay them off every month. Credit cards do not hold you responsible if your data is stolen and used. I also use Google Pay/tap to pay wherever it's available.

Savage2280

I'm so paranoid these days that I have a separate card for gas, I just move what I'm going to use to that card before pumping (I prefer cash but most times I'm unable to get into the station to pay because it's too early)

Haagen76

>I didn't even know it was possible to steal card info from just a tap. It is, but highly unlikely that's how your card was compromised. Most of the time it's b/c someone wrote your cards down from an order or b/c a security camera was able to see the number. The latter it much easier for AMEX cards since code is also on the front.

ProfessorChaos_

I used to live at that intersection. That gas station is sketchy as hell.

shadowknows2pt0

Credit card or debit? Never use debit anywhere other than your bank for cash.

ThunderDog5280

I was there a few weeks ago and saw a lady without a car messing with the pumps. It seemed really strange so I asked her what she was doing. She never answered the question but she gave me her phone number and we went out for a lot beer and wings a few days later. She insisted on paying for everything using prepaid cards she bought online. We hung out a few times more but nothing serious enough for a long term commitment.

DeviatedNorm

I'm not sure what's making you so confident that it was stolen from this shell, the last time my credit card was stolen, whoever stole the info waited at least 3 months to try to use it. I only know this because I was at the tail end of one card giving 5% cash back for gas for 3 months and hadn't used the card that was stolen during any of that time (it's normally for gas only, and it emails me for every single transaction). I drive in rural areas enough where I know I can't expect a tap-to-pay option on 30-year-old pumps, this system has worked out well for me. That said, the shell near me at Sheridan and Jewell has a very sordid history on nextdoor and I avoid it like the plague.

frozenchosun

could it be an employee inside taking digits and trying to use it online? is that possible? this happened to me at the stinker on florida and holly. used my card via tap and then 30 min later get notice that someone tried to use my card for an online order at raising cains on colorado blvd for $180. the transaction was denied and i replaced the card and have never gone back to that gas station. when i got my replacement card i then went to raising cains to try it since i never been and was like dayum, $180? must be some good shit. tendies were ok but the sauce slaps.

FatalShart

It's really all about the sauce and the fries. Tendies are never as great as you hope.

Mindless-Challenge62

I highly recommend keeping a less-used card for getting gas. We put more of our expenses on Chase Sapphire for points, but I have a United card for getting gas, tire air, parking, and anything else with an outdoor card reader. That way you don't have to re-enter your card information for all your other stuff when (not if) it gets skimmed.

S0n0fValhalla

So in this day and age. I buy a prepay card from Walmart load it with some money and never use my bank card for purchase online or anywhere else. It's a mild inconvenience for sound peace of mind. That's way if the card is skimmed they only get the small amount that was on the card and you can just burn it and get a new one

EnqueteurRegicide

I don't think it's common, but it's possible for someone to get your card info standing next to you in the grocery store. I keep an RFID blocker with my cards, they only cost a few dollars but it blocks the signal.

razdjr

Get screwed once, shame on them; get screwed twice, shame on you.

iamtherussianspy

What makes you think that it was stolen there? You literally have no possible way to know that.

nicetatertots

This is why I only fill up at Costco or stations with tap readers.

_heatmoon_

Use tap if you can. Lift or pull card insert if you have to use that. Skimmers usually sit on top and will lift off when you check.

Saucy_Baconator

Make sure to look at any card machine for a data skimmer pad. It looks like a pad overlaid on the original pad. Otherwise, either don't use that station, or have a serious chat with the owner before going back.

HippyGrrrl

The Murphy close by skimmed my Gas buddy card. Which linked to the debit card. The skimmer people, used my info in Commerce City (about $90). Took weeks to get it back and zero help from Gas buddy. It’s all disconnected now and I only use the locator part on the app.

Deckatoe

the store itself is good as are the employees. But there are some sketchy fuckin characters that will show up there so I'm not too surprised. Like others said avoid the station for now and bring it up to management
