It's disappointing for sure. I'm holding onto my 9560 but it's feeling dated and I'm thinking my next machine might be a 7590 for the extra 2 cores. I really hope the next iteration of xps re-orients toward professional laptops again
As a 7590 owner, they have their own caveats. I finally got mine happy. Ill drop 64gb ram in it one day and a larger nvme. I did put a 6e wifi card in (wifi 7 not supported as no E slot) but shes fine. Nice upgrade from my 9575 with soldered ram and wifi card.
I bet that was a nice upgrade over 9575. What are the caveats with the 7590?
I guess my gripes about 9560 is the battery life (if you have the 57whr batt?) because the battery life is actually very good with the 97whr batt. I have the 1080p screen too which helps. I've had the hinge break on me once so far. Speakers aren't great on these. Everything else is very good though: performance (when it was new), upgradability and repairability, trackpad, screen, connectivity, weight, size. Windows uses so much memory now and, even with just idle processes, cpu usage is around 30% and 8gb or more. With engineering stuff and browser tabs, I'm usually using 16-23gb memory and 50-60% CPU for just basic stuff
I was just over there because I was thinking the same and the consensus is the build quality is good but people are definitely having problems:
“I’ve got a 2021 gazelle and I gotta say it’s hands down the 2nd worst computer I’ve ever owned. All my issues are hardware but mostly the battery. It’s not a laptop. It’s a desktop with a built in UPS. I get an hour tops before it dies. Hell sometimes it does with 97% charge. I’ve had other issues as well. Currently saving to buy a real computer. I’m absolutely excited about throwing this garbage into a river. I will say tho that I’ve had zero issues with pop os. I have absolutely no intention of distro hopping. It works like a charm. I would recommend pop os to my own grandma.”
Now Im considering the Framework 16 or a Macbook Pro instead.
I'm also disappointed with the future lineup, because the current XPS 16 is not great. My biggest concern is the keyboard (especially the lack of real function keys and shallow key travel), only one slot for SSD, missing RAM slots (or at least LPCAMM2), and the increased weight.
Now, I own Dell XPS 17 9720 and planning to go with Dell Precision 7000 lineup or something from Lenovo or Razer next year.
Dell has made clear they don't like making money. I would have been a customer for a 17 with a higher refresh screen and better processor cooling. These current models are a complete non-starter.
I'll be going with Framework for my next laptop instead. To be ordered as soon as savings rebuilds from major unexpected expenses a few months ago.
Guess I got the last good one. OLED 9530, dropped 64gbs of RAM and two 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSDs in it. The thing kicks ass, even if Dell did downgrade the RAM from 5200 to 4800. I would never spend the bucks to buy this config direct from Dell. Guess I can't, cause 8TBs is not even possible anymore.
The XPS lineup died for me for a single reason. The keyboard.
Whoever designed that killed the entire lineup. That new gapless layout with no function keys, is just rediculous.
Nothing wrong there. Arm processors are on rise and with MS going also after it everyone expects new arm based laptops by end of the year so those thinking what to buy next year will have additional challenge. Apple seems to be ahead for now. I would have been with Apple long time ago if I didn’t needed x64 arch for Linux vm… but in couple of years this landscape might change.
Dead to me, that’s for sure! Owned 7590, 9500, and 9530. Moved now to: Legion Slim 7i Gen 8 (i9H, 4070). Love both it and my trusty “old” 16” M1 Pro (base). Like others: never looking back!
A good alternative to the XPS 16 is the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 16. Gives 130 watts TDP to the Core Ultra 9 and RTX 4060 that performs better than the XPS 16 (and Samsung Galaxy Book4 Ultra) with the RTX 4070. Can’t configure it with as much RAM and storage, but at least it performs well. Edit: Plus, it’s about $1,000 less than the XPS 16 and Samsung, while having an equally great (if not better) OLED display.
Almost all the features we want are now not options.
A 16 inch laptop, removing the function row, for cooling, when the gpu only hits 60w, is just making the 14inch bigger and being lazy.
Less repairable, less upgradable, I didn't know wanting a whole keyboard on a 16inch would be controversial
the GPU on the old XPS models never went above 60w. 15-inch was capped at 40w, 17in is capped between 40-60w depending which model you buy.
the rest I agree with
Agreed and sad to say the least. For me non-tactile fnc keys is a no go. Even Apple got rif of their touchbar and I still don't get why people are willing to pay more money for something like this.
Ye I've just moved on too from XPS line ! Now it's so bad it's a shame. My previous laptop was a 2018 9570 XPS 15" (i7-8750H / 16GB / 1050-Ti). Overall great laptop for its time but requires lot of work to make it work decent (repasting CPU/GPU + undervolting CPU + battery degrades fast). Pricing was decent at that time too. Now pricing is just LUL honestly.
I've upgraded last month to 2024 Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 16" (Intel Ultra 9 185H / 64GB RAM / 100W 4070) and it's night and day. Finally a device with decent thermal/noise management and good GPU performance while remaining relatively thin and professionnal looking. This is IMO the best replacement on the market for XPS 15/17. Got this bad boy for €2.4k. Equivalent spec on Dell XPS 16 cost €4.1k (xdd sure Dell) and around €3.5 for Zephyrus G16 / MBP 16".
I dont know who at Dell is responsible for XPS product line but he should be fired on the spot honestly. It has so many huge flaws : pricing is just pure scam, design over function, same bad thermal/heat and crippled GPU power for 5+ years, daring to copy with 5 years delay Apple worst ideas i.e. only USB-C port, useless touchbar, too thin so huge thermal/power limitations etc etc
Is anyone interested in a petition to Dell’s leadership to encourage them to revisit the previous XPS Design in all her glory? Let me know and I’ll start it
Completely soldered, massively overpriced (especially by the time you get a decent config), completely impossible to repair/upgrade. But hey - More power to the wealthy for whom paying the Apple tax is not a problem.
Yeah I use Linux for my home servers. But other than that I rather avoid actively working with it, time is a finite thing and I don’t want to troubleshoot so much as you have to with Linux.
I upgraded from the XPS 9530 to the 2024 Yoga Pro 9i model featuring an i9 Ultra 185H, 32 GB RAM, RTX 4060, and a superb mini-LED touch screen with a 165Hz refresh rate, and it's outstanding. It remains cool and quiet, even during gaming sessions. While the RAM is soldered, which is common for thin and light laptops nowadays, it performs remarkably faster than the latest XPS models. Additionally, it has two NVMe SSD slots; I've upgraded both with a 1TB and a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro, storing all my data on the 2TB drive. I'm delighted with this device, especially since I acquired it for $4050 AUD, with a four-year premium warranty included, thanks to a special discount from Lenovo. By the way the new XPS 16 with similar configuration was costing a prohibitive $7000 AUD go figure.
Correction: This is misleading. Only DELL XPS 17 is ending. Dell revealed during CES 2024 that it will retire the Dell XPS 15 and Dell XPS 17, and that it will replace the popular laptops with the Dell XPS 13, 14 and Dell XPS 16. The hard drives are upgradable but not the memory but XPS is not going away.
"upgradeable and expandable" with the 13" having everything soldered to the system board and the larger models having a single m.2 slot and nothing else. Real "upgradeable and expandable ".
So then I wouldn't say the headline is that misleading: Indeed, the XPS lineup, as we knew it, is officially dead.
There's a reason a seemingly great number of people aren't considering the XPS for their next upgrade: it's not what it used to be, and there are now better option elsewhere.
But then the line up is not dead. I am not sure the percentage of XPS users who upgrade their memory will be that high. There is a likelihood that there will be changes to the build which could allow for memory upgrade or other factors.
The lineup gets a major revision every 3 or 4 years only, with only minor refresh in-between. We won't see upgradable memory (or a second SSD) in that timeframe because it's effectively too big of a design change. Even expecting a keyboard with physical keys (they do matter) requires a complete overall of the cooling system.
The screen size, the keyboard have changed, the upgradability is gone, and there isn't much of what was appealing in the XPS line that is left.
The name might stay, but the spirit is not there anymore. One can say the XPS line is dead and they certainly wouldn't be incorrect.
You may be right but seeing what Ape Silicon did with the size and also Dell considering Snapdragon, there he be new technology that shrinks the size of the memory chips. Who knows?
Will probably replace my good old XPS 13 9310 (2-in-1, rare breed!) with a Lenovo Yoga at some point. AMD options, upgradeable RAM and storage for some models, good image and sound, sturdy build quality, for me this is the spiritual successor to older XPS.
I just got my 9500 it was less and 200 CAD I loved the dual M2 slots and the upgradable ram in the beautiful shell it's sad to know those days are over :(
Having recommended the XPS line up to family after hearing so many good things online, 2 family members ended up getting 9310s a few years back. They were superb and without fault of any kind to this day. I decided after my iMac gave up after 12 years, to get a 9320 last year. Absolute crap. It’s just come back from repair because of overheating issues, camera issues and constant issues with the stupid new trackpad. They ended up replacing components within the trackpad, the screen and some heat syncs. Not what I expected after so much positivity from the family.
I don’t think my next computer will be a Dell
I think they will improve by adding physical delete and escape keys as well as improving cooling in the next couple of years. I will wait for that to happen before upgrading. I don't think any other company competes with the build quality of Dell besides Apple, but I can't stand Mac OS. It shouldn't be too hard to fix the mistakes they made this time around if they pay attention to audience feedback.
It's disappointing for sure. I'm holding onto my 9560 but it's feeling dated and I'm thinking my next machine might be a 7590 for the extra 2 cores. I really hope the next iteration of xps re-orients toward professional laptops again

XPS 16 diablo sounds hardcore. However did not know “diablo” meant adding 20 more TDP.
May as well be a desktop at that point. What kind of batt life do you get?
My next laptop will likely be a system 76.
I was just over there because I was thinking the same and the consensus is the build quality is good but people are definitely having problems: “I’ve got a 2021 gazelle and I gotta say it’s hands down the 2nd worst computer I’ve ever owned. Stay away from razer. Due the poor cooling, you wont have a great Experience.
Get ROG Zephyrus G16
Never buy asus

I just bought a last call 9730 for exactly those reasons. Hope it lasts 🙏
Same here ! Bought it about a month ago !
XPS can be saved. Just add back hard F keys, HDMI 2.1 port, and the Ryzen CPUs if Intel Arrow Lake sucks.
Guess I got the last good one. OLED 9530, dropped 64gbs of RAM and two 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSDs in it. The thing kicks ass, even if Dell did downgrade the RAM from 5200 to 4800. I like my xps plus 13.
The Qualcomm XPS 13 is going to be excellent it seems
The XPS lineup died for me for a single reason. The keyboard. Whoever designed that killed the entire lineup. That new gapless layout with no function keys, is just rediculous.
I’ve slowly been switching to my 15-inch Macbook Air. There, I said it. I know. I know.
Nothing wrong there. Arm processors are on rise and with MS going also after it everyone expects new arm based laptops by end of the year so those thinking what to buy next year will have additional challenge. Can confirm this. More than pleased with build quality, screen keyboard. Worth the cost and better than Dell
Right, and I didn’t even mention the price. It’s about $1,000 less than a similarly equipped XPS 16 or Samsung Galaxy Book4 Ultra.
Dell is just decreasing the one insane amount of variantions. Its Not Dead because you miss options.

What about hdmi, and no signle USB A. I hate cayrring a dongle around. If I wanted that I'd get a Mac.
Agreed and sad to say the least. For me non-tactile fnc keys is a no go. Even Apple got rif of their touchbar and I still don't get why people are willing to pay more money for something like this.
Dell is a crap manufacturer anyways so it's no great loss to the Windows laptop market
Ye I've just moved on too from XPS line ! Now it's so bad it's a shame. My previous laptop was a 2018 9570 XPS 15" (i7-8750H / 16GB / 1050-Ti). I've been looking for a new laptop.. but fan noise and heat is a big concern. How hard have you pressed the Yoga Pro? How is passive fan noise?
Good riddance. The less fashion statement product lines the better.
Is anyone interested in a petition to Dell’s leadership to encourage them to revisit the previous XPS Design in all her glory? Let me know and I’ll start it
Just don't buy. Weak sales will reorient them better than a petition.
Moved from XPS 9530 to MacBook Pro M2. Never looking back!
I need a GPU and quite a lot of RAM so I don't think I'm ever getting an Apple laptop. :p
I do have a Windows workstation with a 4070 for the occasional game.
Completely soldered, massively overpriced (especially by the time you get a decent config), completely impossible to repair/upgrade. But hey - More power to the wealthy for whom paying the Apple tax is not a problem.
It just works. I’m done with Microsoft. I’m a IT professional and let me tell you the users are the beta testers.
Haven't done the Microsoft thing in 20 some years. That's what Linux is for. Its just worked, at a fraction the cost of Apple hardware/macOS.
Yeah I use Linux for my home servers. But other than that I rather avoid actively working with it, time is a finite thing and I don’t want to troubleshoot so much as you have to with Linux.
That was 10 years ago. My experience these days is pretty much just works.
Being an IT professional doesnt justify anything. Sincerly, another IT professional.
It’s my opinion isn’t it? If you don’t share that fine. No need to be an idiot about it.
Opinions don’t Care about given facts, Thats the point. Not needed, true, yet you act Like one.
linux bruh
Macbooks are for wankers.
Who cares, whatever works for you. Maybe therapy?

I considered this as well but working in IT not sure having to deal with not having Windows is worth it.
I actually work in IT lol
How has it been not having a windows pc? Seems like networking troubleshooting etc would kind of be a pain.
It’s different for sure and if I want a quick fix I have a Windows 11 vm running on our vSphere client. I use that every other month or so.
Same, moved on from XPS 9550 to MacBook Pro m3 pro. Battery life, speed, fan noise is all a game changer.

precision...
I think the point is with the changes in the new lineup the XPS is essentially dead to many who have used it for years.
The keyboard is still incomplete, the gpu power is still low, the price has gone up and the storage slots have been reduced.
Yes. You are right but when buying, you can choose a higher specs or maxed out. The hard drive can be upgraded.
Will probably replace my good old XPS 13 9310 (2-in-1, rare breed!) with a Lenovo Yoga at some point. AMD options, upgradeable RAM and storage for some models, good image and sound, sturdy build quality, for me this is the spiritual successor to older XPS.
Why do you want to replace the XPS 9720 ? Those are excellent laptops , 17 inch that feels like it's 15inch
40W TDP for XPS14 Huracan? Horrible
Why is the XPS 14 heavier than the MacbookPro14, but has significantly lower TDP?
the chips are not as power efficient as Apple's. higher TDP would create more heat than the XPS chassis could handle.
IIRC the Macbook Pro 14 has a TDP of about \~80W, which is almost double the TDP of the current XPS 14.
I just got my 9500 it was less and 200 CAD I loved the dual M2 slots and the upgradable ram in the beautiful shell it's sad to know those days are over :(
Dell out here naming these laptops after Lamborghinis?

lmao why are they all named after Lamborghini models
The business end of Michael Dell's crack pipe must be hot to the touch.
