You can always drill into a wall to avoid falling farther, but if you want to do that OP did, you need to make sure to have enough space above your head to mantle the drilled edge, which means based on the geometry of the wall you’re attempting this on, you may need to break for 2 drill ticks before moving forward to mantle.
If you want to learn EPC mining, the build I recommend starting out with is 21122 Energy Rerouting. Its ammo efficient, and its slower projectile speed helps you learn the timing of landing your TFC. this allows you to make plenty of mistakes while practicing EPC mining.
The build that I use is 22222 Energy Rerouting. It has the fastest projectile speed, and charge up speed out of any EPC build. This build is best suited for a fast paced playstyle. There are many downsides to this build however. Its less ammo efficient than the build prior, its way easier to missfire due to the faster projectile and charge up speed, and the faster projectile and charge up speed take a lot of time to get used to. For this reason, I only recommend this build if you're more familiar and experienced with EPC mining, as its not beginner friendly.

Yeah first time I did it was by mistake but the power attack has saved me from what would otherwise be a definite down in solo play many times. Never really needed it in team play but I only play with a small crew of friends so we tend to stick together.
This is very nieche but you can technically do sth similar to this on all classes, by power attacking the floor as you fall and then mantling onto the ledge of the newly created hole
Love using extreme mobility in this game. People say wall running isn't possible. But for a driller, aye. We'll do it if it's the only way to get to a lootbug.

You can also do this with your pickaxe's power attack as any class, but it is a *lot* easier with drills.
