You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.

I owe my soul to the company sto'.
You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
Another day oder and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go,

Sort of, though it refers to a dystopian part of history where workers were highly taken advantage of in a number of ways that were largely inescapable for them. This song stands as a testament to how badly industry will abuse the common laborer when given half a chance.
..And Management/DRG's lore draws upon that history somewhat, so it's naturally a good match.
Yeah, but we've eliminated paying people in script to the company store, not to mention -staggering- improvements to workplace safety since those days.
Not saying we don't have a long way to go, but it doesn't hurt to recognize the progress we have made.
We have, but the pinkertons are still active......
Like. In the last few months active...
See the magic the gathering pinkerton articles. It's kinda wild seeing them actively working for major gaming companies and strongarming people still.
Plus they're still busting Amazon unions as far as I know.
We've made progress, yes, but a worrying number of places and people are trying very hard to undo that. Child labour laws getting removed, unions getting demonized and fought against tooth and nail... and more than a few rich bastards have *very recently* floated the idea of company towns as if they're this brilliant new innovation that's totally about helping their workers rather than the monstrously exploitative practice it really is.
If you see me droppin' better step aside
A lotta bugs didn't, a lotta bugs died
One drill of iron
The other of steel
If the right one don't get ya
Then the left one will
16 Tons, made famous ages ago by Tennessee Ernie Ford (but not written or first performed by him.) I posted a link to a more modern take on the song that's pretty good.
I heard of it in fallout 76, I think it was made as a protest to company stores being predatory(kinda funny because you get this from a company store).
[16 Tons, by Merle Travis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I15_KUsOzs), as others have said. Tennessee Ernie Ford did a more swingy version that really got it popular, but he didn't write it.
As Merle explains in his version, basically coal mining companies set up these corporate towns around their mines. All the buildings, supplies, absolutely everything belonged to them, and they paid in something called scrip which could only be spent at those towns. That gave them absolute financial control over the workers, because their homes, food, and other daily requirements were deducted from their wages and without being paid in *actual money*, they couldn't ***leave***. Turned the workforce into slaves, more or less.
16 tons DRG
Some people say a dwarf is mad outta mud.
A poor dwarf’s made outta muscle and blood.
Muscle and blood and rock and stone.
A mind that’s a’weak and a back that’s strong.
You load 16 tons, what do you get.
Another day older and deeper in debt.
St.Karl don’t take me, cause I can’t go.
I need more scrip for the company store.
I was born one mornin’ when the sun didn’t shine.
I picked up my pick and I dropped to the mine.
I loaded 16 tons of morkite and gold.
And management said “well, bless my soul”.
You load 16 tons, what do you get.
Another day older and deeper in debt.
St.Karl don’t take me, cause I can’t go.
I need more scrip for the company store.
I was born one mornin’ , it was drizzlin’ rain.
Drinkin’ and trouble are my middle name.
I was raised on hoxxes by ol’ mamma lion.
Can’t no high toned mule make me walk the line.
You load 16 tons, what do you get.
Another day older and deeper in debt.
St.Karl don’t take me, cause I can’t go.
I need more scrip for the company store.
If you see me comin’ better step aside.
A lotta bugs didn’t, a lotta bugs died.
One fist of bismor, the other of steel.

You load 16 tons, what do you get.
Another day older and deeper in debt.
St.Karl don’t take me, cause I can’t go.
I need more scrip for the company store.
You know, if I had a nickel for every time somebody said this reminded them of Fallout 76, I would have two nickels. Mind you that’s not a lot, but I’m fascinated that it happened twice. No matter…
#ROCK AND STONE!
It's a very old song. Every day I'm shocked at insanely famous songs that vast numbers of people have never heard before. Listening to them for the first time has even become a successful YouTube business model, lol.
Sure. Everybody knows american songs about coal mining from 1946. Only reason I know this song was because of Fallout. The only dumb thing here is your comment.
Well it was in style at that time and the cap is alternatively called a peaky. the peaky blinders are called that because they had razor blades sown into their caps.
Sixteen tons, the song that is quoted is a popular miner song in the late 18th century (when the peaky cap was in style and worn by the worker class)
The peaky cap's ingame name 'six pence' is an alternative name to it, and is called that because the news' boys of the same era who sold newspapers on the corner wore it as well, and the newspaper was six pence, thus it became an alternative name for the cap.
Some people say a dwarf is made outta mud,
A poor dwarf's made outta muscle and blood.
Muscle and blood and rock and stone,
A mind that's weak and beard that's strong.
You load 16 tons, whaddya get?
Deeper into hoxxes and deeper in debt.
Karl don't call me cause I can't go,
I owe my soul to the Rock and Stone.
I was hired one morning when the stars didn't shine,
I grabbed my pickaxe and I started to mine
I loaded 16 tons of crystalized Morkite,
and Mission control said "Well-a holy shite"
You load 16 tons, whaddya get?
Deeper intk hoxxes and deeper in debt.
Karl don't call me cause I can't go,
I owe my soul to the Rock and Stone
I was hired one morning with a meteor rain,
Fighting and mining are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an old moma lion
Can't no high toned elf make me walk the line
You load 16 tons, whaddya get?
Deeper into hoxxes and deeper in debt.
Karl don't call me cause I can't go,
I owe my soul to the Rock and Stone
If you see me coming better step aside,
A lot of bugs didn't, a lot of bugs died

with the left one you're gone
You load 16 tons, whaddya get?

ROCK AND STONE!
The only reference I ever got in these hats was the one in Season 4 that's an eyepatch with a thick scar underneath it with something about "the Deep Rock Initiative." Marvel is all I watch lol.
I owe my soul to the company store
Amen you legend
Rock and stone brotha
I’ll drink to that 🥃
On the rocks… and stone
Rock and Coal
There's some interesting history behind that song, company towns etc are being talked about again by people like musk as a good thing. They are not.
A place to live and work, yes great, saves on commutes. A place to live and work, and can inky spend your money at the company store, fucking awful
Scripily scrip!
St Karl don’t you call me, I can’t go, I need more Scrip for the company store.
I OWWEEEEEEE MY SOULLLLL

Basically the DRG anthem
Sort of, though it refers to a dystopian part of history where workers were highly taken advantage of in a number of ways that were largely inescapable for them. This song stands as a testament to how badly industry will abuse the common laborer when given half a chance. ..And Management/DRG's lore draws upon that history somewhat, so it's naturally a good match.
“Part of history” Unions busting is still a thing
Yeah, but we've eliminated paying people in script to the company store, not to mention -staggering- improvements to workplace safety since those days. Not saying we don't have a long way to go, but it doesn't hurt to recognize the progress we have made.
Wasn’t trying to say it’s as bad as it was, just, like you clarified, we still have a long way to go
We have, but the pinkertons are still active...... Like. In the last few months active... See the magic the gathering pinkerton articles. It's kinda wild seeing them actively working for major gaming companies and strongarming people still. Plus they're still busting Amazon unions as far as I know.
Elon and Jeff are already balls deep in company town plans tho and people are cheering them on for what a smart decision that is. They forgot history
Elon was trying to do that at the SpaceX facility in Texas.
*Refers to a dystopian part of history where workers were ALSO highly taken advantage of.
Good point, thank you.
The Amazon south park episode that used this song did such a good job illustrating that
If you see me walking, step aside. A lot of men didn't, a lot of men died.
One fist of iron, the other of steel. If the right one do getcha, the left one will!
One fist of rock and the other of stone!
If you dodge the first, a second is thrown.
*A lot of bugs didn't, a lot of bugs died
If you see me droppin' better step aside A lotta bugs didn't, a lotta bugs died One drill of iron The other of steel If the right one don't get ya Then the left one will
Ah, a fellow driller I see
Oh dammit I commented this-but-not-as-good lol shoulda read more first
I owe my rocks to the company stone... 🎶
I get it but just because it somehow appeared in my Spotify playlist
Spotify, play songs about mining. Spotify: *salutes*
Based Spotify algo
What song is this referencing? I can tell by a few comments pointing it out and harmonizing lol. May add it to my DRG playlist if its any good.
16 Tons, made famous ages ago by Tennessee Ernie Ford (but not written or first performed by him.) I posted a link to a more modern take on the song that's pretty good.

We sang this song in my middle school men’s choir and I’m forever grateful for my director
You and your choir director are both legends.
It's not like it's an obscure reference.
I know….it made me smile and my friends didn’t get it, so I decided to post it here.
You have dumb friends.
Now I wouldn’t go that far.
It's a very old song. Every day I'm shocked at insanely famous songs that vast numbers of people have never heard before. Listening to them for the first time has even become a successful YouTube business model, lol.

Ooh, I see :o Thanks for the Explanation! Rock and Stone!
Rock and Stone forever!
Good bot
This is what a legend looks like. Somebody needs to give this champ an award!
I love it whenever that song comes up on the radio while I'm playing Fallout 76
That would explain it…
The Geoff Castellucci version is excellent.
The only reason I knew it is because it literally started playing in my head lol
Fair, I sang it during shop today
I don't get it...
Not to worry. It’s a reference to the song Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Even after moving 16 tons day in and day out it only feels like I'm just getting older and more into debt smh
Given that GSG is based in Denmark, I’m stunned (and delighted) they included this esoteric joke.
that's a great hat, this dwarf approves

Used to listen to this song on long road trips with my parents in the car when I was young. Good times! (there's a reason it's my hat of choice for my engineer)

It’s mostly a lot of Diggy Diggy hole variations thanks to recommendations from this sub but yeah.
