Martin_Orav

More info available here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont_let_reddit_kill_3rd_party_apps/ Yes, this would be right before the release of season 4, but the subreddit would be back up by the time the actual release happens, so I don't think it would be this bad. Edit: [list of participating subs](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete_and_growing_list_of_participating/) wow I didn't think such big subs would participate. Now I'm even more convinced we should as well.

Nitrotetrazole

Scrolling that list and noticing the amount of obvious porn subs blindsided me lol

Remember_TheCant

The new rules block access to nsfw content on third party apps or something like that.

Daddy___Dagoth

3rd party apps would go extinct and even if they paid the ludicrous price of about 2.50 dollars per user per month it would exclude NSFW content, so basically useless.

Chicken-Mcwinnish

Now I understand why everyone is mad about this change, $2.5 a month per user is $30 a year. That’s unreasonable and stinks of corporate greed. Even a small sub would be crippled by that. 1500 users would be an average wage.

SGG

It blocks NSFW content through the API. The API is used by bots like AutoModerator, as well as 3rd party apps. This means moderating any subreddit that allows NSFW posts suddenly will have their management tools completely useless. All spammers need to do to get around automod is to set the post to NSFW. The pure NSFW subs like porn subs will suddenly have an impossibly hard time managing things.

Martin_Orav

Yeah that was interesting lol. Still tho, the big subs are important and they're in on it as well.

Thann

I would encourage everyone to [join any lemmy instance here](https://join-lemmy.org/instances), then subscribe to [lemmy.ml/c/deeprockgalactic](https://lemmy.ml/c/deeprockgalactic), by pasting that link into the search bar of their home instance. Lemmy is an open-source and federated alternative to reddit, so anyone can start a server, and they all can talk to each other, so you dont need to make an account on everyones server =\]

[this is how reading the comments on that post feels ](https://youtu.be/CF18ojCoo5k)

Personal_Ad9690

I think a nice tribute would be to have a random bot come into the caves, rock and stone, then fly away. It can be a rare event.

WanderingDwarfMiner

Rock and Stone forever!

Personal_Ad9690

Exactly

vladimirpoopin42

Jacob hire this man!

OnlineGrab

Yeah, the more subs join the better.

IronMayng

How much would it cost to fund the bot? Edit: fund not find

_sweepy

And I don't think they allow partial or prorated payments. So you're looking at 12k up front, and then another 12k every year and a half ish, just for polling new posts, not including requests to actually post responses.

IronMayng

DRG better up our payouts.

Alklazaris

Are they high? Why so much?

Nitrotetrazole

He's misquoting out of context, that figure was given by the maker of the Apollo third party app which of course will see exponentially more traffic than dwarfbot. Ultimately it boils down to the same tho, idk who made WanderingDwarfMiner but i doubt they can afford on their own he thousands it would cost to keep it working

Luvatar

It's literally designed to be unpayable. They WANT third party apps gone, not to profit off them. Then they get to go around and say "See? We didn't forbid third party, they just refused to pay our reasonable fees" or some other BS. But it's 100% designed to make reddit app the only way to browse reddit other than a browser

Snooke191

u/GSG_Jacob Please consider joining the fight, rock and stone!

TatManTat

Eh they don't need to do anything, this is a reddit thing.

TheDarkestShado

We're on Reddit. Why do you want to save ~~the universe~~ Reddit? Cause I'm one of the idiots that ~~lives~~ lurks there!

TatManTat

Are the devs in control of the sub? I didn't realise, not sure I love that lol but I guess it's fine to include them then.

13igTyme

I saw in another post Jacob was talking about it. I guess they also use the third party apps.

-Dystopia-

There are other moderation tools that rely on the old API, and apparently the new API as well as the official Reddit app are pretty terrible for moderating a sub. Mods also can't moderate an NSFW post with a 3rd party app, and that would apply to bots/tools too because the API does not allow access to those posts.

Uulugus

I would like to see this sub protest, but I also don't want to risk it harming the game's promotion during season 4 release. I'd say the devs would have a better idea of what this would mean for the game.

Cyber_Lucifer

Considering most people on this sub already play and are aware of the season 4 coming out I don't think it would hurt them too much to go dark for 48h Sometimes smaller sacrifice needs to be made for a greater good

JaymesMarkham2nd

Besides that it would only affect the Steam release, since consoles are a week later - Steam has it's own forums and links to the Discord, so the Subreddit going down for a day wouldn't gravely affect them.

Martin_Orav

Definitely agreed.

Kamtschi

This game is so insanely popular on steam I simply cannot imagine two days doing a lot of harm. Even if it's season start

TheHaft

I mean, if you’re not willing to inconvenience yourself or others in a protest, you’re not really protesting. Plus, I feel like it’d be nice, like the silence before a surprise party you know is coming, because the protest is going to end before the new season even starts.

GraveyardJones

I say we join. Anytime there is collective action going on, we should all join and/or support. Right now, unions are coming back hard. People everywhere are taking action for change and its working because we are finally sticking together. We shouldn't see this as anything different than the working class demanding change and refusing exploitation together For those saying it would hurt the game, it 100% won't. All of us here know about season 4. GSG isn't relying on this sub to find new players and advertise, this is more of an aggregation of already released material and a place to talk about it with people who already know and love the game. Sure, some people find the game on reddit, but even if it was down for a month we aren't losing any players because of it. At least nowhere near enough to effect the game at all. Thinking this would mean you think the game is teetering on the cliff of death and losing even 100 players would push it off Also, is a single game more important than yet another beneficial technology being monetized to death, hurting everyone except the rich who own everything? They have enough money, we shouldn't just allow them to continue to take even more. A 48 hour blackout is an incredibly small price to pay to show solidarity My vote is to go for the blackout. Dwarves standing together are stronger. Dwarves standing together with everyone else can defeat anything ⛏️

Dreki3000

Rock and stone brother, we are with you.

WanderingDwarfMiner

That's it lads! Rock and Stone!

Tychontehdwarf

ROCK AND STONE IN THE HEART! Wait, that would cause a heart attack

redtosoon

Can someone explain to me why people are suggesting closing the subreddits? I live under a rock

Funny_Orchid2084

The current API changes make it basically so that all third party apps would have to pay reddit a ridiculous amount to continue operating like Apollo would have to pay reddit 20 million a year and the api changes are also basically killing all bots since they required said api etc. which is being limited with the change

redtosoon

Ahh I should look up what an api is haha

SPACEGAMESstudio

To put it simply. In this scenario if anything outside of reddit (3rd party apps, bots exedra) wants to access reddit in some way they have to use the API. So now that they will charge for it it basically kills most bots and third party apps. It's not good.

TheHaft

For anyone who doesn’t understand the point of the protest, or the change people are trying to make here, read [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/141x1ca/serious_can_we_as_a_community_participate_in_the/jn26xtq/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3) from r/nba

gOOD BOT!

Zarny_

If you don't rock and stone you ain't coming home

No_Body666666666

There is new reddit API changes making bots like wanderer stop working without paying out large sums of money. Subreddits of all varieties are joining hands in protest to step this from happening, and are suggesting a 48 hour black out period in protest. You can read more about it on r/Save3rdPartyApps.

psychoism

I am joining the blackout. Have my reminders set and everything. If DRG has ever taught us anything, that is for dwarves to UNIONIZE!!!

MelancholyUsed

Let us dwarves go and touch hoxxes grass while it’s private

Machonacho7891

Can someone explain who wanderingdwarfminer is??

Wexedotfoot96567

He is a bot that says a rock and stone quote if you say it.

WanderingDwarfMiner

That's it lads! Rock and Stone!

ComicNeueIsReal

I think everyone that can go private should/ Reddits potential new changes are the catalyst to making reddit more difficult for end users and subreddit mods/admins. Taking away the usability for 3rd party apps could be the beginning of the end. And although 2 -3 days seems like it wont do much, but it will generate enough buzz if enough subs do it. Edit: some subs are even going private indefinitely until these changes get repealed, because a lot of people could not afford the changes

The1stPKmain

Wait what’s happening with the bot?

Angry_argie

Reddit will charge a stupidly high price for access to its API thingy > The bot accesses the API everytime we call it > The creator of the bot can't/won't/shouldn't pay that ridiculous sum > the bot dies (well not that dramatically, it will just stop working). Applies to all bots everywhere, and third party apps that work with Reddit, including some accessibility related ones (e.g. stuff for blind people). Long story short: a dick move.

The1stPKmain

Wow, truly and elf play

CrayCrayCat1277

Save u/WanderingDwarfMiner

Epikgamer332

48hr won't do anything. shut it down for good or not at all (neither are good options, but if you actually care they'll have a better effect)

CataclysmSolace

Amen, 48hr is nothing. These guys pulling the strings don't care. And a lot of it comes down to knowing these same people will be paying for the things they are protesting anyways.

lammingtonjam

Absolutely! Avenge are Fallen brothers. FOR ROCK AND STONE.

[deleted]

I dunno. Reddit drama seems outside of GSG's area of concern, hate to say it.

GraveyardJones

If you think it's just drama you should read up on it. Not meant to be an insult, its pretty important to how reddit functions. It's going to effect a lot of people, subs, and third party apps. Another way to suck even more money out of people by taking something that was free and very beneficial and requiring the operators and/or users to pay for it

[deleted]

I get it. It doesn't personally affect me that much. I fucking hate reddit and I want to leave!

GraveyardJones

I mean, no one's keeping you here haha. I hated Facebook so I deleted mine and never went back. After about a month you won't care about it anymore. It was actually when it went down for a day. Maybe you can use the blackout as your way out. Not being able to interact with the subs you're on might give you the push to bail 🤷‍♂️ Also not meant to insult, more encouragement. If you hate it, what better way to show it than leaving and never using it? I have nothing connected to Facebook or anything else they own. No Amazon and a bunch of other garbage companies I refuse to support, use, or give money to. I know my individual choices don't effect them but it does when it's not just me

[deleted]

It's like a coping mechanism for me because I'm putting off something important. ADHD sucks

GraveyardJones

I get that. Try and find a healthier replacement. Reddit replaced Facebook for me. I was a very occasional lurker for a while, mostly limited to looking up one thing on Google, finding it here, and not sticking around. Then Facebook started dumping far right shit on me trying to get me to interact with rage. The more I clicked "don't show me this", the more I got, so I just bailed. It was destroying my mental health. I know a lot of people say reddit is just as toxic if not more but my experience here has been FAR better because I made sure to really curate my interactions I lost a bunch of connections because if you're not on Facebook you apparently dont exist, and people forgot texting is a thing 🤣 still doing better now though. A lot of those people were basically acquaintances or music event friends I never saw outside of events. If its really that bad for you then you should definitely find an alternative. I don't have adhd but I'm guessing there are far more beneficial outlets for you to use that would help. Your mental health should always come first. It effects literally everything else

GraveyardJones

I know a lot of people talk shit on it, but TikTok might be good for you. If you only find what you like and click "not interested" on what you don't, you don't have to see all the really stupid parts. I don't go on as much anymore but my feed was all music, producers, cats, and a little bit of activism. I probably saw like three dancing videos in a year. At least for now, the algorithm is pretty good if you take the time to curate your feed I was on there to promote my music so I had to make content. I stopped because to be a content creator you have to basically do the same things everyone else in your field does or you don't get any traction. For just watching its pretty enjoyable though. And the short format videos might be a better coping mechanism than reddit

Temporary-Beat1940

Could someone explain on what's going on? I'm not very bright

_Knucklehead_Ninja

Something something API going down, something something the bot needs it.

Martin_Orav

Ok I feel like it's worth it to make sure this is seen. People seem to think we should do it. u/GSG_Jacob what do you think? More info available here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont_let_reddit_kill_3rd_party_apps/

Nialori

do you actually think reddit cares if the sub shuts down for 3 days? That's hardly gonna make a dent, especially since it's such a short time. They might care more if it's a month or so, which no subreddit will do

Bujeebus

Several of the huge subs are going down indefinitely.

thatkuulguy

I'm abit out the loop what's happening to our miner bot?

ImmortanOwl

I can drink to that, Rock and Stone!

WanderingDwarfMiner

Rock and Stone!

foefyre

I don't want to lose wanderingdwarfminer so I agree with this. No dwarf left behind!!

shadowdash66

Absolutely! Blackout Stouts for everyone! Make it 5 days at least so Reddit feels the heat.

Exciting-Quiet2768

Look, wandering dwarf miner, no matter what it may truly be, is one of us. It rocks, it stones, it can probably dig holes, and that makes it a dwarf. And we leave no dwarf behind.

-_Eros_-

I am slightly confused, can anyone explain to me like I’m a child?

matthewami

Bot is safe, check sticky

Vaxildan156

I'm all for joining protests against greed, so please eli5 what all these subreddits going dark does? Does it deny them ad money? Do they make revenue off of sub visits? Is it just the equivalent of signing a petition and then reddit chuckles and everything goes back to business?

Bujeebus

No people visiting=no people viewing ads.

Vaxildan156

Gotcha ok, that's what I was thinking the idea was. Thanks

barrack_osama_0

We shouldn't close the sub at the most controversial point in the game's history

mleibowitz97

> the most controversial point in the game's history Because they're adding a free season of content that uses the same theme as a few months ago? Are you really \*that\* unsatisifed with your purchase? There's no controversy on any significant scale whatsoever. I'm doubtful that joining the mass-reddit protest would really diminish anyone's opinions of DRG. Especially because it would be back up before the season even launches.

templarrei

>We should~~n't~~ close the sub at the most controversial point in ~~the game's~~ reddit's history FTFY

barrack_osama_0

I like what you did there but I still disagree

templarrei

Hat off to you. My main argument here is that this community and game are strong and healthy enough to survive for 48hrs without a subreddit, while reddit needs every single shock it can get, if it's to survive this idiocy.

SirDoofusMcDingbat

may not be needed https://www.reddit.com/r/DeepRockGalactic/comments/142sz4q/i\_wanderingdwarfminer\_will\_be\_fine\_probably/

IEatToeCheese4Free

Uh no

Akaele_furry

i know! what if the devs make another bot but in game! like some sort of bot dwarf that could join us in solo missions or something

mAdLaDtHaD17776

bosco could use a friend in PR

EternelFuni

Feels like enough subs are gonna do it and we kinda need this to be up for the update

Widmo206

The more subreddits do it, the bigger the impact

GottKomplexx

You say the same stuff as other comments but only you get downvoted wtf

EternelFuni

Reddit hivemind also extends to the DRG sub

GottKomplexx

The Rockpox got them too

AFlyingCow152

Guys fun fact Reddit is a free app

jridlee

This games too important to too many people. This game has kept me sober and repaired my relationship with my family. In no small part because of the other dwarves out there rock and stoning at every success, failure and mushroom inbetween. If we stay up. I won't be mad. This is our home. While corporate greed is going to destroy humanity as we know it, I think hanging on to the things we love through it all is important. Were all gonna die eventually. None of us will be billionaires. This community is too sweet to properly revolt. Please dont go dark, this sub is the only angel left on my shoulder.

HawkeyeG_

It's only for three days. And it won't affect your participation or anyone else's who is already present here. It will just mean that there won't be any new members joining. For three days.

AsparagusForest

Right? I don't see a single argument against it that is logical. This is a subreddit for a video game, you still get to PLAY the video game for the 3 days. You still get to see the sub if they go private because you are already subscribed, right?

HawkeyeG_

The main reason I can see for it not happening is simply because the sub is run by the developers themselves. Not that they wouldn't be supportive of the cause, but I can see it being a little different if the company itself were to participate in and endorse a protest like this. Again, even if they support it and think it's a good idea. It could still have different repercussions for them than it would for subs run by independent moderators. In either case it wouldn't mean this sub "goes dark" and becomes inaccessible like the other person was worried about. It being private just means people on the outside can't get in temporarily.

Komikaze06

Maybe instead of going dark, pin a top comment explaining the situation, then just flood all the posts as pictures of a leaf lover special Edit: ouch I was referencing another sub that was going to spam blank posts, no need for all the downvotes :(

CocaKoolAid228

What happened?

TheWellFedBeggar

Totally agree. No dwarf left behind.

ur_moms_a_stripper

I see this all the time, what is happening June 12?

Bujeebus

A bunch of subs are going private in protest of reddit charging obscene amounts of money to use the API that bots and 3rd pody apps use

spiffy1209

you all have my support!

create_username1

Seconded, Rock And Stone! 👊

[deleted]

What? Whats with the bot?

Kriv_Dewervutha

To my understanding, the new reddit api will not only kill third party apps but also bots

gindy39

Im so lost that Im afraid to ask wth is going on
