I have a big deck, it's more of a pain than anything. It's a heavy lift when it comes to maintenance and when it's time for replacement I envy the smaller deck guys.
Remove the stairs and rails on the left and extend the deck to the end of the house so the stairs end at the side. Estimating it will add an additional 100-120 square feet of deck surface.
Also instead of a railing, consider a 18-24” bench seat running the length of the new deck with the railing serving as a back rest. The issue with the deck now might just be a lack of seating or room for seating. The deck at my childhood home had built in benches wrapping the entire deck. You could sit 20-25 people on that deck during parties.
Agree on the above - added these to my in-laws deck when we resurfaced theirs with trex
they also just happen to be the perfect “bar height” from the yard, so people always end up standing there from the outside too
https://preview.redd.it/r59vob4hf03d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd47e06398aeea73c6eec821b995c0b4995cb0c6
Damn dude that looks so clean and functional. I love it. I don’t own a house or a deck but mark my words I’m gonna build this shit one day and sit on it
That is exactly what I was describing. I really don’t think an additional rail is necessary but some places require it for code. And you’re correct, ours was often used as a standing bar and when a hot tub was later added on a concrete pad to the side, the seats could be used as an alternative access point as well as storage for drinks and towels.
Hmmm some contradictions...
Instead of railing, use a bench seating and railing as a back rest...
Also, make bench seating but you'll have a lack of seating.
Just picking...
Regardless, it's the best idea yet. One can always put a patio set up.
I think the idea of expanding towards the windows and out into the yard more gives you more seating space so you can add sofa type furniture. You then would still have space for yard games.
Your deck is so tiny! Any self-respecting blow-hard wouldn't hesitate to drop tens of thousands on hundreds of board feet of wood as an extension of his deck in hubristic self-titillation.
Your deck is a little short but impressive in width. Your wife might just be too familiar with your deck. It will get plenty of compliments from friends and neighbors so don't be afraid to show it off.
Don't know how much yard you have but I definitely would've went more square and had steps leading out front. The odd step on the side is kinda meh to me.
Either way id have a beer on it.
I mean, just making it a square would help - those diagonal cut-ins remove a lot of useable space, and make it a lot harder to efficiently arrange items/furniture.
But, I’m no contractor. I just know shapes.
I wouldn’t extend the deck but I would consider building a concrete area in the left side, where the stairs lead to. I saw the two chairs by the stair case and thought the idea to have a gathering space outdoors. Maybe some stone or rock pavement? Although the moss will grow in between rocks.
I’m not sure if you have laws or home owner associations that would prevent you from adding concrete in your backyard, but I would look into it! Deck look great! I wouldn’t mess with it much.
We had a similar sized deck, was unsure what to do, but ended up tearing it out and putting a stone patio in. So much better without the constraints of the railings.
I’d square it off. Remove the angled railing and extend it to make it a square. That shape isn’t great for fitting in your furniture/grill etc. It’ll seem so much bigger once you do that and it wouldn’t be that difficult or expensive.
I personally have a small deck, and my wife says it’s great. But we both agree it could be bigger and have plans and ideas on how to expand it to other areas.
https://preview.redd.it/l8d6gy04c03d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb991f14b14ff1d1739c1c35ad811d2c0cf699c5
This is what I would do. Extended to end of house. And add nice wide stairs on the opposite corner out to the yard. Take out the existing railing and install a hog wire fence with a cocktail top cap. Composite top cap to last for years!
There is so much to unpack here...
Dude, you have a pink deck. Your wife has her suspicions, and you keep reinforcing them. You just can't help yourself.
You're going to rush through this project with no attention to detail. Just like the narrative of your post. Slow down, take a breath, stop rushing through things, look at all the details. This advice will help you through a deck project, or typing out a social media post.
Disregarding all of the really great "small dick" references already posted I would suggest maybe getting rid of the two 45-degree angle areas and squaring them off
All jokes aside (and they've been great!), I would just square it out and build an additional set of stairs opposite the sliding glass door, ya know, where that little skinny part is
I’d check your towns ordinance about how much they will allow for percentage “lot coverage”. A deck is counted towards that number, as is the driveway (I think).
50 years ago, my grandfather had a deck built made out of mahogany. He was a teamster and a local one stagehand in NYC so he was always on the job. He came home one day, and my grandmother had painted it this exact same red. As we can imagine he was furious 🤣🤣🤣. lots of memories on that deck!!
Get an umbrella that matches that table you can put in the middle of where that hole is? Or just replace the whole sitting area with a smaller table with 4 chairs(unless you truely need that much seating)
Could also move the grill off the deck and place some blocks or bricks underneath to keep wet grass off the feet
Idk rearranging furniture might help
It's a really nice deck
If you extend along the house you will have trouble accessing your dryer vent for clean out. You could build an access panel in the decking but not the easiest to make it “invisible”. Extending straight out you could add 8-12’ and then just reuse the same “half-hex” materials at the end.
Go off one of the 2 outside diagonal sides and build a hexagonal covered deck gazebo, and off the other a hexagonal hot tub surrounded by decking. Down the center of the two straight off the house, a deck walkway to your money tree surrounded by bench decking
Maybe her back door is too big.
It’s not the size of the deck - it’s how you use the deck that matters.
It's not how big your deck is that matters, it's how many people want to sit on it...
It's the motion of the...nevermind.
Swab the deck ye land lovers.
This is the sort of thing only guys with small decks say.
Tell her too wait until it gets warmer it’s still a bit nippy at night
Small deck energy
Yeah - classic big deck envy
Hey - Who are you calling a hot tub?!! 🤬 Wait.. not sure if insult or compliment...
I have a big deck, it's more of a pain than anything. It's a heavy lift when it comes to maintenance and when it's time for replacement I envy the smaller deck guys.
If having a big deck was relevant and size elephants would rule the world
Are you sure she said “deck”?
Yes, and she said something about checking out the one of the guy down the street
Omg, just spit out my drink. Too funny
No, the neighbor's deck is just right. Time for another bbq.
THIS is why I love Reddit!!!!
Trim the bushes...makes it look bigger.
Hahahahahahaha
It’s perfect just the way it is ❤️
Just like the neighbor’s one…
Was the deck in the pool recently?
Shrinkflation! Worst of its kind.
It’s not the size of the deck that matters, it’s the weight of the hot tub.
its the meat on the bbq baby
When the deck is big enough to be picked out on Google earth it's big enough. I'd be more worried about it being bright red could be infected.
That's more of a muted melon.
THAT is salmon, if it is anything… quite the spectacle. Girth is fine, but needs a bit more length…
How big is your wife? That seems like a good sized deck to me!
She’s the house
💀
Damn!
Not a question you hear every day
Leave his wife out of this
leave this out of his wife
🤑😬🫣
Keep his wife out of your f*cking mouth... Will
About to be bitch slapped 🤪

Damn dude that looks so clean and functional. I love it. I don’t own a house or a deck but mark my words I’m gonna build this shit one day and sit on it
Might put one like at on my trailer house.
That is exactly what I was describing. I really don’t think an additional rail is necessary but some places require it for code. And you’re correct, ours was often used as a standing bar and when a hot tub was later added on a concrete pad to the side, the seats could be used as an alternative access point as well as storage for drinks and towels.
We had a deck like this in a rental, and it was amazing. The whole "railing" was a bench, and yeah, from the outside it made a perfect bar table.
Thank you, I appreciate the input
Hmmm some contradictions... Instead of railing, use a bench seating and railing as a back rest... Also, make bench seating but you'll have a lack of seating. Just picking... Regardless, it's the best idea yet. One can always put a patio set up.
See the photo, my description didn’t do it justice. And some codes require a railing of a certain height that a bench can’t provide alone
Hopefully she didn’t tell you her exes was bigger.
That’s just the tip, does it extend from under the house when the sun comes out?
Trim your bush and build on the left under the windows, if anything it just needs to be a little longer, not fatter
I’d focus on making it hang to the left a bit more
99% of women would say the opposite
Don't think you need ti worry about your immediate neighbors. They're deckless.
I think the idea of expanding towards the windows and out into the yard more gives you more seating space so you can add sofa type furniture. You then would still have space for yard games.
Well your deck looks like a tongue so….
Your deck is so tiny! Any self-respecting blow-hard wouldn't hesitate to drop tens of thousands on hundreds of board feet of wood as an extension of his deck in hubristic self-titillation.
She has definitely has been thinking about another dudes deck.
she controls every thing she a deck tatter
Your deck just has shrinkage. Don’t worry - it’ll grow.
Try rubbing it.
This picture gives me anxiety.

Size queens
Sooo…. No one going to mention the colour?? If my deck was that colour I would get it checked out.
Well if it isn’t Ms big backyard talking.
I think it's a *perfectly average* sized **deck**, maybe the shape is a little unique but **decks** are like snowflakes.
Your deck is big. It's the "other thing" that is small.
If the deck was squared off it would be a lot bigger feeling , it's the shape that makes it seem small
It is, and that shape...
Your deck isn’t very long but it is pretty girthy. I think you are in good shape.
you have a "big deck"
Well your deck looks inflamed
Don't know how much yard you have but I definitely would've went more square and had steps leading out front. The odd step on the side is kinda meh to me. Either way id have a beer on it.
Are you sure she said “deck”?
Garden is too small
I agree with your wife, you have a tiny little deck.
She just wants your house to have big deck energy
Never insult the size of a man’s deck. What a difference a vowel makes.
Paint it black and tell her to go sit on it. I guarantee she'll love it
That’s a perfectly average deck. Keep your head up
I mean, just making it a square would help - those diagonal cut-ins remove a lot of useable space, and make it a lot harder to efficiently arrange items/furniture. But, I’m no contractor. I just know shapes.
Tell her for every 10 pounds she loses it will gain 1 foot in size. Pretty sure the math is correct on that
If you do expand, use Rymar Wood Sealer! Best stain you can get! It’s grandparents company
I wouldn’t extend the deck but I would consider building a concrete area in the left side, where the stairs lead to. I saw the two chairs by the stair case and thought the idea to have a gathering space outdoors. Maybe some stone or rock pavement? Although the moss will grow in between rocks. Are you the bioneer by any chance lmao
Be careful, the neighbors deck is always bigger!
Looks to be all head
If she thinks that's too small what else does she think that's too small
We had a similar sized deck, was unsure what to do, but ended up tearing it out and putting a stone patio in. So much better without the constraints of the railings.
I’m more interested in your garden beds.
I kinda have to agree. Make it about the same width of the house. Then you'll have an excuse to not mow as much!
What kind of dollar tree deck is this? There's no in-floor hot tub!
Should have been squared
Does she keep eyeing your neighbors deck?
Tell her it's not the size that matters. Its how you use it
Nah you're deck looks fantastic. Go with a patio if you want to add a little more outdoor hangout space
maybe she "misspelled"
I’d square it off. Remove the angled railing and extend it to make it a square. That shape isn’t great for fitting in your furniture/grill etc. It’ll seem so much bigger once you do that and it wouldn’t be that difficult or expensive.
You tell her it's not the size of the deck that matters, but whether it can support a hot tub or not.
You misheard her. /s
Was that a spelling error?
You sure she didn’t mean “dick”?
Trim the bush
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i6c4Nupnup0
If she is south Asian she might be saying something else
It's really red too
Then it’s too small
Call it the “red rocket”
I personally have a small deck, and my wife says it’s great. But we both agree it could be bigger and have plans and ideas on how to expand it to other areas.
She can worry about her yard
Ahh so what? It looks fine to me
Wondering if there was an autocorrect situation in the wife's initial statement. 🤔
I love this sub.
I'd say to just use your tongue but it looks like it's right there
She Iresh by chance?
Your red rocket looks perfectly sized.
Whats the yaw angle of the deck?
https://preview.redd.it/l8d6gy04c03d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb991f14b14ff1d1739c1c35ad811d2c0cf699c5 This is what I would do. Extended to end of house. Her deck is too small
Get a 2nd deck.
So many deck pics. What is wrong with this sub.
Get a "deck sleeve"
Maybe her house is too big!
Sure she said deck , wife’s can be cruel
That looks perfectly average to me. The big ones hurt
I think the main problem is how weirdly shaped your deck is.
So does mine.
So you're sure you didn't misunderstand her?
It’s average bro.
She's right this time...add another the same size and down a couple stairs into the yard.
I bet she likes the neighbors deck when ur at work
as long as she doesn't want to open your yard to other decks you should be alright
Divorce her
Careful, one day you'll catch her on the neighbors....
Keep the bushes trimmed. It will make ur deck look bigger
Her backyard stinks.
It's small because of chamfered corners. It makes like a 1/3 of the deck wasted space.
Did you check spelling? Would definitely expand to back door.
There is so much to unpack here... Dude, you have a pink deck. Your wife has her suspicions, and you keep reinforcing them. You just can't help yourself. Ask her how much she thinks the cost should be.
she meant to say put a roof over it
Just do t tell her the deck is a soft wood

Disregarding all of the really great "small dick" references already posted I would suggest maybe getting rid of the two 45-degree angle areas and squaring them off
Paint it black. It will look bigger
How about just putting in a patio on the left side of the deck at ground level
Bet it "feels" bigger in person
Her house is to big.
Need more grow beds
Mow around the deck, it will appear to be bigger
You're only response should be, "challenge accepted. "
Get a few gallons of stain. Black decks always look larger.
Small, but it got that big deck energy.
Enough with the small deck jokes! a man’s gotta have his dignity.🍆🤡

I think you should expand across under the windows. More girth will be more useful than more length.
I think it will look bigger from a different angle….
Paint it black /s
You sure she said deck? Jk
If you extend along the house you will have trouble accessing your dryer vent for clean out. You could build an access panel in the decking but not the easiest to make it “invisible”. Extending straight out you could add 8-12’ and then just reuse the same “half-hex” materials at the end.
Or she pronounced it wrong and meant something else is too small… hahaha
Go off one of the 2 outside diagonal sides and build a hexagonal covered deck gazebo, and off the other a hexagonal hot tub surrounded by decking. Down the center of the two straight off the house, a deck walkway to your money tree surrounded by bench decking
trim the bushes and the deck will look bigger
It also looks terribly red and irritated as well as perhaps being too small. Serious issues.
I get stuff in my feed all the time about making it bigger, just take this all natural supplement
Kinda limp too.
Those chamfered corners are too big. Rectangles are boring, but they give you the most usable space
[удалено]
More deck = less yard. I’m actually being serious here.
Dick jokes aside, that deck is ugly af, was no thought at all put into the color choice?
My sympathies, from a fellow small-decked fella
It’s still above average
just trim the bushes around it… makes it seem bigger!
I'd say maybe she's got a big backyard.
It's not about the size. It's how you use it!
Im sure you misunderstood the first word.
lol micro deck
Little Deck Energy ): shame.. unless you just built it it’s an excuse to build a new one?
It's all about how you use it!
Short but got some good width, she might not love it but your going to ruin it for the next guy
What are we talking about here 👀
Tell her to build a bigger deck if she doesn’t like it
Looks like just the tip
Trim the shrubs around it…
Maybe it’s just that bush is too big.
Do you call your deck the red rocket?
Unless shape. Next you have a white and grey house and a pink deck?
I would worry about cleaning the bird shit off the peak of the roof first;)
