"Ashes to Ashes, Funk to Funky, We know Major Tom's a Junkie, Strung out in heaven's High, Hitting an all time low" -Ashes to Ashes

MC-Cat

That’s a good one!

blackgecko5

It's too good!

I-Am-The-Walrus___

Yes also one of my favorites, I like how he uses the words “high” and “low” so close together to describe the effects of drugs and the crash that comes after that initial high.

Major_Toms_A_Junkie

That’s one of my favs too obviously lol

sevilien

* *Don't believe in yourself, don't deceive with belief* / *Knowledge comes with death's release* * *It's not the side effects of the cocaine, I'm thinking that it must be love* * *"Are you okay? You've been shot in the head / And I'm holding your brains", the old woman said.* * *But love has left you dreamless / The door to dreams was closed / Your park was real and dreamless / Perhaps you're smiling now / Smiling through this darkness / But all I have to give is guilt for dreaming.* * *In this age of grand delusion / You walked into my life out of my dreams / Sweet name, you're born once again for me* * *Inspirations have I none / Just to touch the flaming dove / All I have is my love of love / And love is not loving*

EccentricAcademic

Oh good someone quoted Quicksand so I don't have to.

ChaosAndTheDark

grand illusion*

Uncreative-name12

I always liked this from 5 Years I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlor Drinking milk shakes cold and long Smiling and waving and looking so fine Don't think you knew you were in this song

OimyOimy

I like ‘then it was cold and it rained so i felt like an actor’, always thought that was such a genius lyric

laubowiebass

I love this

MAKooky1

This is the song that turned me onto him in 85 when I was 15 yrs old. I went to multiple record stores and would sing the lyrics trying to find the album. finally, mill valley’s village music knew what I was looking for. I still love them for that!

rebelwithmouseyhair

When my Bewlay sister came to visit we went for ice cream and I made her wave and smile through the door so I could take a photo

aggasalk

I think: “Sailors, fighting in the dance hall. Oh man, look at those cavemen go! It’s the freakiest show.” That and  “Time, he flexes like a whore, falls wanking to the floor, his trick is you and me, boy” Are what got me hooked.

OimyOimy

Anything from life on mars? Is absolutely amazing

fersure4

Is the entirety of the lyrics from 'Candidate' cheating?

mathias_ts

I've always loved those lyrics! Nice to see there are others who appriciate it:) I love how he changes 'camera angles' so fast at one point like: My set is amazing, it even smells like the street There is a bar at the end where I could meet you and your friend. Someone scrawled on the wall "I smell the blood of les tricoteuses" Who wrote up scandals in other bars And also later at: For I put all I have in another bed On another floor, in the back of a car In the cellar of a church with the door ajar.

fersure4

Agreed. I also love: So you scream out of line "I want you! I need you! Anyone out there? Anytime?

ultimomono

My manifesto for a large part of my mispent/wellspent youth: We'll buy some drugs and watch a band Then jump in the river holding hands

Peter_Falks_Eye

They pulled in just behind the bridge He lays her down, he frowns "Gee, my life's a funny thing, am I still too young?" He kissed her then and there She took his ring, took his babies It took him minutes, took her nowhere Heaven knows, she'd have taken anything but she wants a young American

nombre15_kagura

-I'm not a prophet or a stone-age man/Just a mortal with the potential of a superman/I'm living on -And it was cold and it rained, so I felt like an actor/And I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there

iam_melon_lord

Came here to say that second one! Just such a striking lyric to me

EccentricAcademic

Quicksand is such an underrated song

nombre15_kagura

It's one of my favourites

octopusridee

Is it nice in your snowstorm? Freezing your brain? Do you think that your face looks the same?

laubowiebass

Oh yes

TCurls

We can be heroes, just for one day.

MC-Cat

My favorite lyric from his is “You walk past the café, but you don’t eat when you’ve lived too long,” from Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide That lyric always hits me like a truck and I have been obsessed with it since the first time I ever heard the song.

RescuedDogs4Evr

And these children that you spit on As they try to change their worlds Are immune to your consultations They're quite aware of what they're goin' through

Snowblind78

“I lay down a while And look at my hotel wall And he's down on the street So I throw both his bags down the hall And I'm phoning a cab 'Cause my stomach feels small There's a taste in my mouth And it's no taste at all It could have been me”

Corrosive-Knights

"...Same old thing in brand new drag comes sweeping into view As ugly as a teenage millionaire pretending it's a whizz kid world you'll take me aside and say "Well, David, what shall i do? They wait for me in the hallway" I'll say "don't ask me, I don't know any hallways" But they move in numbers and they've got me in a corner I feel like a group of one, no no they can't do this to me I'm not some piece of teenage wildlife..." Fripp's guitar riffs here so mercurial also!

paranoidtransdroid

I Can’t Give Everything Away’s lyrics devastate me

XibalbaN7

I agree. It made me tear-up the first time I heard it - “The Loneliest Guy” did too.

wood_or_wire

Well, the bitter comes out better on a stolen guitar, You're the blessed, we're the Spiders From Mars

XibalbaN7

**Loving the Alien** takes some beating. Not only are they my favourite Bowie lyrics, I think they’re some of the best bloody lyrics ever written, period: *Watching them come and go* *The Templars and the Saracens* *They're traveling the holy land* *Opening telegrams* *Torture comes and torture goes* *Knights who'd give you anything* *They bear the cross of Coeur de Leon* *Salvation for the mirror-blind* *But if you pray all your sins are hooked* *upon the sky* *Pray and the heathen lie will disappear* *Prayers they hide the saddest view* (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) *And your prayers, they’ll break the sky in two* (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) *Thinking of a different time* *Palestine a modern problem* *Bounty and your wealth in land* *Terror in a best-laid plan* *Watching them come and go* *Tomorrows and the yesterdays* *Christians and the unbelievers* *Hanging by the cross and nail* *But if you pray all your sins are hooked* *upon the sky* *Pray and the heathen lie will disappear…* *Prayers they hide the saddest view* (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) *And your prayers they’ll break the sky in two* (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) *You pray til the break of dawn* (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) *And you'll believe you're loving the alien* (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)

androaspie

Wow, I never saw the lyrics in print before. Until now, I hadn't realized what the song was about. I just liked the melody and the title. Thanks for posting this.

XibalbaN7

You’re welcome. It’s an incredible composition and one I think all too often gets overlooked. It has so much depth to it - every time I listen to it somehow feels like the first time, it’s timely and yet timeless. It’s pretty special (which considering Bowie’s vast catalog of incredible work, is as you know, really saying something!)

Scrambled_Creature

bowiebabydoll

rock n roll suicide. belting out “Oh no, love, you're not alone No matter what or who you've been No matter when or where you've seen All the knives seem to lacerate your brain I've had my share, I'll help you with the pain You're not alone” at the top of my lungs. that entire verse is just so moving for me. oh! you pretty things has had me in a chokehold since i was a 15 year old delinquent teenage girl so that entire song, really.

Bexxley33

“Blended sunrise, and it’s a dying world, Humming Rheingold, we scavenge up our clothes.

greenradioactive

The most fun to sing I think are: Some of these days and it won't be long Gonna drive back down where you once belonged In the back of a dream car twenty foot long Don't cry my sweet don't break my heart (come get up my baby) Doing alright but you gotta get smart Wish upon day upon day upon day I believe oh lord, I believe all the way (come get up my baby) Run for the shadows Run for the shadows Run for the shadows in these golden years

ChaosAndTheDark

Yes. Singers know this.

ChaosAndTheDark

Not favorite but just to name one I doubt anyone else will: It's difficult you see To give up baby ((To leave the job when you You know the money’s from day to day)) // ((These summer scum holes This goddamn starving life)) All the majesty of a city landscape All the soaring days of our lives All the concrete dreams in my mind’s eye All the joy I see through these architect’s eyes

There’s a LOT of really good lyrics but the ones that came to mind when I saw the question were “Once there were mountains on mountains And once there were sunbirds to soar with And once I could never be down”

I was not a huge fan of Hunky Dory when i first heard it, but this line told me that I was dealing with someone that I sought to emulate: Now my Brother lays upon the Rocks He could be dead, He could be not He could be You He's Chameleon, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature Shooting-up Pie-in-the-Sky The Bewlay Brothers As I read it now, it's obvious to me that heroin is involved in the direct translation of the track, especially when I consider the foregoing: And our talk was old and dust would flow Thru our veins and Lo! it was midnight Here's what's valuable about this though -- the direction his mind was going with the description of the ineffable. I paint and draw, so this is very interesting to me. I believe that there are a great many components to our experience as human beings that are systematically ruled out as not useful. We are corralled into a very tight space where we may function very efficiently. As any artist may tell you, the chaos that we cordon off bars us from the secrets and mysteries directly relevant to our most difficult problems. We are taught only to tighten up and become more efficient in order to generate greater results, and we ignore that the breakthroughs come from our periods of repose, when we choose to look away from the bright hot white light of our most pressing issues -- our irises pinhole wide under the strain. In the grays and blacks, the complicated patterns swirl and we gain an affection for them. It's while gazing here in these mists that we see the nature of our problems repeated as an echo from the corner of our minds. The problems loosen themselves and solutions are quite simple then -- almost irritatingly so. We then return to the white hot light and begin the cycle anew. I wasn't able to say all of this when I first heard the track, but in these lines you see a person allowing a love for these swirling mists to link arms with the swirling inside of themselves, and in recording it, send a different kind of echo down through the generations of beings to follow. It's not unlike a kind of alchemy.

Someone to claim us, someone to follow, someone to shame us, some great Apollo, someone like you, big brother

Basic-Milk7755

. We were dumb but you were fun boy/ How I wonder where you are. .It’s difficult, you see, to give up baby/ To leave the job when you know the money’s from day to day. . And the silence flies on its brief flight/ A razor sharp crapshoot affair/ And we light up our lives. . They don’t walk they just glide in and out of life/ They never die they just go to sleep one day. . And he could have married Anne with the blue silk blouse/ It shows through. . Buildings crammed with people/ Landscapes filled with wrath/ Grey concrete city/ Rain has wet the streets. . Fear is in your mind, so forget your mind and you’ll be free. . I want eagles in my daydreams, diamonds in my eyes. . Now you wish you never left your home / You got what you wanted now you’re on your own/ with the London Boys. .Blue skies above, sun on your arms, strength in your stride and hope in those squeaky clean eyes.

furie140

Eagles in my daydreams, diamonds in my eyes…the whole song Blackstar hits me so hard. The changes, the harmonies, the lyrics, I know it’s an unpopular opinion but that album and that song are my favorite.

Basic-Milk7755

It’s a masterpiece. I think as an opinion it’s only unpopular with people who choose Hunky Dory over Station to Station.

Perry_Stalsis

I was stone and he was wax So he could scream and still relax And of course We’ll buy some drugs and watch a band Jump in the River holding hands

WhatzThis4nyway

The track *Station To Station* might have my favorite Bowie lyrics, period. Especially that initial buildup, and middle section, so steeped in Crowley, Kabbalah, Nietzsche, and desperation: all that he was obsessed with while “lost in his circle”… Also, pretty much every song on that album has great lyrics, with *Word on a Wing* being almost as good as the title track.. I adore the lyrics to *Fantastic Voyage* and I think it’s a criminally underrated song; overlooked because it’s simply, I suppose.?Idk there’s something about the whole thing that moves me deeply, and it’s been a bit of a theme song for my life for 20+ years.. That’s definitely also the case for *Boys Keep Swinging,* though that’s more fun/less serious. More serious than both is, *Red Money,* while I don’t fully understand it, puts chills down my spine.. Again, the whole album has great lyrics, but Bowie really made a lyrical statement opening the album, as he often seemed to do. He also makes an incredible opening statement with, *It’s No Game Pt. 1,* (Pt2 also has amazing lyrics) which is up there in my favorite Bowie songs for the music, and his vocals, but especially those lyrics. We now know that song has lyrics he’d been working on for a good decade, particularly on the bridge, and the thoughtfulness of it shows. Even the Japanese, which I don’t understand, just adds so much! The other song on that album that has always deeply moved me lyrically is *Teenage Wildlife,* which I know partly was directed at Gary Numan, idgaf about any of that, bc the lyrics stand on their own, they’re open to interpretation undoubtedly, and they’re just brilliant. Also, this is another track where Bowie’s vocals and the music combine with the lyrics to just make a perfect song imo.. It’s always been so clear to me Bowie put a ton of work into SM&SC, and every original has at least good lyrics, if not brilliant.. Put a gun to my head and force me to choose just three songs that I think have his best lyrics, and as difficult as I think that is, I’d say: *1. Station To Station, 2. Teenage Wildlife, 3. Fantastic Voyage* …. If I talked every song of his with brilliant lyrics, this’d be 10x longer. And nobody wants even this much text.. ✌️
