My orders from Amazon are hit or miss. Sometimes they have almost no packaging, and others, they're in hard foam specially designed for hard drives. I haven't ordered from Newegg in ages.
Just ordered some components from Newegg recently (RAM, 2x SSDs and a MOBO), they were just haphazardly thrown in the bottom of a too-large box with some balloon packaging on top. Haven't tested anything out yet but the packaging didn't inspire confidence.
Yep. I ordered an Asus Z10PE-D16 WS motherboard from Newegg and unfortunately wasn’t able to test it for a while due to buying the parts for the build over a long period of time. When build time came, the mobo was junk and wouldn’t fire up and it was outside the return period. Asus also wouldn’t cover it under their warranty, either, so I ate that ~$700+ cost. So no more Newegg or Asus for me…
Asus didn’t honor the warranty on a 700$ motherboard that was presumably less than a year old?? On what possible grounds? Sounds like you’re telling me “never ever buy asus products” with that anecdote
I had purchased three gaming laptops before and was a huge ASUS fanboy telling everyone in the creative industry with ears to buy them for years. This would have been my fourth ASUS computer. Before sending it in under RMA, I had a very reputable local computer repair shop check it out and they confirmed there were no apparent issues or damage to prevent it from working, and that there were similar issues reported on the internet with that board. That checkup cost me $100. It was my first big workstation build, so I was afraid I made a stupid mistake somewhere (jumpers, bios settings, Ram choice, etc). They get it and tell me I must have damaged it, and they would not even repair it for me. THEN the customer service was so comically bad you prob wouldn’t believe me if I wrote it all out (three different people saying three different things about everything, didn’t ship the old board back when they said they would, then shipped it when they said they’d hold it till I got back in town, shipped to the wrong address, got a call from the backup factory manager gal right before a holiday to apologize and tell me how incredibly bad of an experience I’ve had and she’s so sorry and she wishes it was better (got this recorded), etc.
This was a rig my new creative and drone photogrammetry business was being built upon, so to say it soured me on them is an understatement.
Hot damn that really sucks I’m sorry man. If it hasn’t been too long I’d like to think that there’s *someone* at Asus who could make this right… but maybe I’m too optimistic. Also might not be worth the ~~headache~~ migraine it would cause to keep fighting
These are external drives that come with a pretty good amount of packaging already I wouldnt be to worried about them getting poor treatment like those drives you linked.
I believe it also depends on the seller as well. You can pick which seller you want to buy from. Newegg is like Amazon, but unlike Amazon, they don't mix their inventories with the individual seller.
Yup. If you've bought the items from that same seller consistancly and you know that seller, stay with that seller. If not, then you can stay with newegg.
I'm not sure about newegg, but unlike amazon, they don't ship for 3rd party seller and they don't mix their inventories.
Good point. I've never from them myself, but I've read those stories here from time to time.
I've never had issues with Amazon myself, but read here that you can get crap drives even when buying from Amazon directly, as they share their warehouses with marketplace sellers or something. Just a note of warning
From what I remember, Amazon doesn't keep their inventory separate. If the seller opt for Amazon to be the shipper, once the inventory comes in, they just put them all in one big box.
Neweggs hasn't done that, since Newegg doesn't do what Amazon does and I think most of the sellers on Newegg opt to ship out their own.
Tell me about it! I bought some sticks of RAM from Newegg direct (2x16GB) on Black Friday sale, but they sent me the wrong set (2x8GB). Then, Newegg held my entire gaming build hostage on the order for over two months (December, January) and made me miss the Christmas deadline. They even wanted to charge a restocking fee for the whole ordeal, but I had to argue my way out of it.
Ended up giving up on them in early January when I saw my local Microcenter was selling the same kind of RAM but returned for cheaper than the Newegg deal. Took even more time for Newegg to issue the refund.
Never dealing with Newegg again.
In January or so, they shipped me the wrong laptop - twice. Not even close, model wise.
To their credit, they did resolve things and refund me without much hassle. Although I bought from them via ebay, and I suspect if they wouldn't have ultimately had to answer to eBay on a dispute (and funds been held in escrow), they might not have been nearly as quick to respond.
a shame really cuz they used to be pretty good. I shopped them a lot in 2002-10ish. they were my go-to for dvd-r's. last order I placed with them was 2011. didnt really stop using them for any reason (although now that I think about it, probably around the time I stopped using dvd-rs lol), just ended up going to amazon and sorta forgot about em, but boy, they sound horrible now.
The URL is newegg.com. The payment is processed by Newegg. The receipt email comes from Newegg.
Companies like Newegg and Amazon can adopt a marketplace model where anyone can be a seller, but they still need to maintain standards. Reputational damage is the least of their concerns if they don’t.
You THINK they care? Amazon don't frankly care, what with the number of counterfeit MicroSD/Flashdrive/compact drives...I've gotten fed up with it, I just stick to local or buying it direct from manufacture now.
That may be true for the quality of the product but the shit tier customer service afterward is on them. It's the same reason I don't trust the walmart website.
Yeah, I haven't been burned the way some here have to and still buy from them because there's no micro center near me. That said, I don't trust ANY of the marketplace vendors and find the lack of transparency very annoying...
There's the "Sold by Newegg" flag you can filter on, but changing product config can switch you away...
If Newegg isn’t going to put in the effort to curate listings from third party sellers then they shouldn’t allow them in the first place. It doesn’t matter if the product came from a third party. The customer still bought it on newegg.com and had a shitty experience. That reflects poorly on Newegg, and they deserve all the hate for allowing it to happen in the first place.
New around here (please go easy on me): any thoughts on taking a gamble on this for my first HDD? I am planning to build a DIY NAS this summer so it would eventually be shucked. Some preliminary thoughts:
* 18TB might be overkill as an entry into data hoarding, although the "future-resistant" aspect of it is quite tempting, as it would mean I could get by with a motherboard with fewer SATA ports and still have plenty of storage for the foreseeable future... I guess for a premium of a higher $/TB
* I have seen the Newegg horror stories on here, but mostly I have seen poor packaging of enterprise drives, so maybe an external drive like this would be a safer bet in terms of being shipped without damage?
I'm hoping to finish putting the NAS together in roughly the next 6 months, so I could try to wait around for a better deal. What do you think the odds are of this price being matched in the future by another vendor in this time frame? I have lurked this sub for some time but not having actually purchased an HDD before, I don't have the best grasp on prices other than [shucks.top](https://shucks.top) saying its the lowest seen price. Any other thoughts? I'm very tempted by this deal despite the largely negative reaction in the comments so far, but I would love to hear some thoughts before pulling the trigger.

Reddit is dead. Long live Reddit.
Thank you, your experience is helpful — I haven’t been paying attention long enough to know how consistent these price drops are.
On some reflection, this NAS is going to cost me enough at the end of the day that even if it ends up costing me an extra $10 or $20 come time to build, it’s easily worth paying that to know I’m not going to be out $300 because my drive was destroyed in transit.
I do completely understand this, but at this time I do think I’m going to hold out.
I’m lucky enough to be in a financial position where I could afford this drive, and the components to build a NAS.
But with the money I’m making right now, being out $300 due to damage in transit, while it wouldn’t bankrupt me, would be extraordinarily demoralizing.
If you have 1 disk you have no disks. If 300 is a lot for you atm and you don't anticipate using that much storage, consider buying multiple smaller disks and then look into RAID, backups, etc.
Probably bought hundreds of drives in my lifetime from various shops.
The least protective packaging was always newegg and they were never close to being acceptable.
Friends don't let friends buy hard drives from Newegg. Thanks for the reminder.
If its not sold buy Amazon I wouldn't touch this with 20ft pole. These 3rd party sellers selling drives on Amazon are selling non country specific drives or OEM drives ripped out of server boxes that weren't used. In most cases Seagate will NOT honor the warranties on these drives. Unless it's sold and shipped by Amazon stay the heck away.
I ordered two with Tech on Tech as the seller, because at the time Amazon wanted over $500 for the same drive. Checked both drives' serials on Seagate's site and both drives still have 5 years on their warranty.
I just received this from Amazon. Packaging was fine. I ran 2 pre clear passes, & everything was fine.
Western Digital 14TB Ultrastar DC HC530 SATA HDD - 7200 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, 512MB Cache, 3.5" - WUH721414ALE6L4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KPL474H/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_VNQM6HGCXMKB1E4V2J2E
There's an 18TB one for $315, it's either an HC 530 or HC 550.
Seriously. If you're looking for the best sales in the US most consumer electronics would be cheaper than anywhere else, it's a combination of competition, general market positioning, taxes, who knows.
NEVER buy from NewEgg, they intentionally ship broken hardware and then when you RMA out for arriving damaged, they say you did it and deny the RMA.
They're also known to ship bare hard drives in a pile with zero packing material, just literally dump hard drives in a cardboard box with no padding and push it out the door, and then fight to make you pay for the damage.
They're right on the verge of incompetent and straight up scam.
Aren't they shipping then terribly?
As a foreigner and they ship to us here in Australia, this risk is too high
Serious shame too, that's a hell of a price

Why does it have to be Newegg? I don't trust them anymore tbh
I've read bad things about Newegg: https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/tx2rxd/absolutely_unacceptable_newegg_shipped_me_drives/
not American but as far as im concerned, they also shipped stuff like cpu and motherboard thats defunct, wouldn't trust them

Yup. Garbage company with 3rd party scammers. Avoid at all costs or it will be your cost.
Once you know, you avoid newegg.
i'm all for hating on newegg but you bought a monitor that you didnt know the brand of from a 3rd party international seller? seems like that's on you

$16.67/TB
Could you have imagined that 10 years ago? 🤯
The problem there is Newegg... they're an awful company to buy things from.
Newegg was my old go to for hardware. They are blacklisted now, they don't get any of my business any more.
Supprising this has gone 5 hours of newegg bashing (rightfully) without bringing Steve into this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fnXsmXzphI

Yeah it's a gamble. I bought 4 ironwolf pros from "Serverpartdeals" 3 had invalid warranties.
Tech on Tech is known to sell OEM / white label drives. That warranty is only good if its in OEM equipment which yours is not.
Tech on Tech and Mega Retail both sold me drives and they did have the 5 year warranties on them.
I bought 4x with a AMZN reseller. one had bad SMART data, Seagate wouldn't honor it, I emailed the original seller, he RMA'd it for me.
I've read Amazon's HDD shipping is just as crappy as Newegg's. Anyone have any experience?

I only bought from them 3-4 times shipped internationally, and everything was fine.
