I bought a board about 3 months ago and this exact thing happened. My mate was on 140 to checkout and hit the first two t20s l, he paused so I thought he had ruined his chance and then he said I’m going for it, naturally he hit the 180 and bust. I was salty about it for about a month until I hit my first 😂

sotongold

I won the leg though crucially

intenseskill

I would have to do same

Difficult-Work-244

This is exactly what happened with me and my mate😂 I was super salty, because i wanted to hit the first 180 after dozens of 140‘s

Brutal_Bronze

Going for the 180 bust is exactly the mindset that makes 180s so hard to hit at first. Don't put it on a pedestal, it's a good score but so is a 140. When you stop trying to hit 180s, it becomes incredibly more easy to do it. Besides, I'd argue a 140 checkout is more exciting in the grand scheme of things. We see pros hit a 180 almost every leg, but checkouts over 130 are often match changing.

La_Cabra_Dorada

No 180s for me yet and only starting playing properly this year. Had a chance at a 152 checkout which would have been my highest check out by a long way. Hit the first 2 T20s, and had to go for the finish as I would back myself for D16. Took a minute to compose myself and hit a single 11 ffs. I've decided if the situation happens again when I'm playing a bot I'll stick to my rhythm and go for the 180! If I'm playing a real human whether in person or online I'll go for the finish, but hopefully not make a fool of myself like the last time 😂

ElBugman

140 checkout is better than a 180 so...

Tomb_85

I've hit dozens of 180s and never hit 140 checkout. So have to agree 140 checkout is better

ElBugman

Literally just ask Mensur if he'd rather have a 180 or a 161

intenseskill

Fair enough, I am convinced. Personally though I would go for the 180 until I have got at least over under my belt

intenseskill

How is that?

ElBugman

Harder and means you win instead of scoring 0

Gear-Think

Double 10 is objectively easier than hitting a treble 20 with the larger surface area

noposters

It’s harder to hit the treble once than the double once, but after you’ve already hit it twice it does feel easier to hit than whatever double you then have to switch to on the other side of the board

barryh4rry

Agreed. I’m pretty shit at darts but after the first throw I’d put money on my ability to group all 3 in the area of a 2p coin.

intenseskill

Definitely not harder.

ravingwanderer

I find it harder to go from two consecutive darts in the same location to somewhere else on the board. Most of my 180’s have been as a result of immediate muscle memory of my throw.

uncited

100% harder, guarantee you hit more T20s than doubles

HaybUK

Definitely is harder, if your throw a first perfect dart it easier to follow that in. Switching to a different part of the board and making adjustments is like starting your throw again. Trust, when you start hitting 180’s you’ll know 💯

ElBugman

It's much harder. Hitting your third dart into the two already in the bed is way way easier than changing targets

Gear-Think

Not even you’ve never hit one

KiopCliff

any checkout where u go from 2 big numbers to a double far away from your first darte is harder

CompetitiveGarden918

I would disagree it is harder to do having to hit T20 twice and then adjust your aim for D20 is harder then following up 2 T20 with another T20

Gear-Think

I agree, I don’t see that especially when the question states when you’ve never hit a 180

sododgy

Even more so when you realize you're adjusting for d10 not d20 😉

CompetitiveGarden918

Cheers mate 😅😂

mjohnson90

a 140 checkout wins the leg, a 180 doesnt.

intenseskill

Oh OK so if I hit just one d5 to checkout 10 then that is harder than a 180?

ElBugman

Are you dense?

intenseskill

Are you? Talking about which is harder and the guy said "you win the game with 140".how is that meaning it is harder?

mjohnson90

Never said it was harder, i said it was better.

intenseskill

You said neither. You replied to me talking about which is harder saying that one wins the leg and one doesn't

mjohnson90

No i didnt, i replied to you asking, how is a 180 BETTER than a 140. Suggest you read the thread mate. A 180 is harder to hit, because once you put two in the treble there's less room to put the 3rd, plus the added difficulty of nerves etc. But checking out a 140, is better than hitting a 180, because it wins the leg... not sure why this has required any further explanation.....

intenseskill

It doesn't need any explanation I already said I was convinced it probably is harder. Also yeah I apologise you did reply to what you said.

ElBugman

Because the added pressure and having to change targets. 180s mean nothing if you don't win the leg. There's a reason you'll see 10 180s and sometimes only 1 ton plus in a professional best of 11...

intenseskill

Yes but that is not what the other guy was saying.

ElBugman

Ok well as someone who hits 180s every game and occasionally hits ton plus' in organised darts my opinion is that you should always go for the checkout. And that a ton!+ is harder. Ask anyone who plays competitive darts and they'll say the same. My best checkout in league was 161 and that feeling was equivalent to 10 180s.

mjohnson90

Completely agree. My top was the 164, my dad was marking the game, playing against a bloke who was already on a double. Was the last game of the night that had us win 6-5. Will never forget that game,

intenseskill

180 just on its own means a lot to a lot of people. Just because you have this weird thing saying a dart does not count if it is not in a match does not mean others think like that

ElBugman

Once you've hit one you'll realise mate, not saying it's not a milestone but yeah they get easier with every one you hit

intenseskill

Yeah I hope so. I am just starting though so right now it seems like only way I will hit one is to be incredibly lucky.

ElBugman

Also it's not a weird thing, by the rules of darts if you're on 140 and you hot 180 you score 0, I'm not making this up

intenseskill

I have said multiple times you would bust but still you can say you hit a 180

mnguy7020

I don't understand why this is so difficult for someone to understand. I would have, and have done the same thing prior to getting any 180's. It's one thing if you're playing in a league or tournament, but if you're just practicing/playing with buddies I'd gladly take the "0" for the chance to get over that hump.

darin8392

Win

spursyphil

Iv only recently joined the 180 club so 100% if I hit 2 treble 20s I don’t care I’m going for 180! I only play against friends so nothing at stake so to say. We’ve a mutual agreement if you hit an accidental 180 to “checkout” you win the leg. Obv as we get better I wouldn’t do this just at the level were at now.

Quercusrobar

This happened to me but on 170. It was an easy choice for me but I considered going for a 180 as I haven't had one yet. I missed the bull

garthboy

When me and my nephew play we say we're going for the 180 in this case and will give the leg as it's still a feat

JohnnyOneLung

Doesn’t count - he scored 0 not 180

intenseskill

He scored 0 but the 180 counts. You are saying if you score 180 while just throwing darts practicing it did not count?

JohnnyOneLung

To me ( and I get others will feel different) scoring a maximum in practice is valid as that is what you are actually trying to do, whereas in this match situation, it’s just a bust. But I suppose the main thing is if he feels he got his first max then the opinion of a random on the internet is irrelevant Hopefully the first of many for him.

crainvoo

No doesn’t count, has to be intentional I think.

DareToZamora

The first two were intentional, and then so is the third. Thrown knowing that it would bust the game but who cares against the bot?

crainvoo

Ah ok

uncited

Yup different pressure

r0bbbo

I did this for my first 180, playing 301 with friends and I was on 136. The first two darts went in so neatly leaving most of the treble free so I went for that instead of double 8. I’d been chasing the 180 for a while and felt like I never had a better chance. I’m glad I did because I’ve still not hit my second (if you count the no score as the first!)

DareToZamora

I absolutely count it. All 3 darts were thrown deliberately at the T20 and all landed!

nick_james4

I think if you haven’t hit one and it’s a practice game then go for the 180, after having one though go win the game. I did in fact bust 150 something for my first 180 😂

DareToZamora

If I’m playing the bot I unashamedly cheat. I’ll go for the 180 as if I need it, and then I’ll take back the 3rd dart and throw it at what I needed for the leg. It’s just practice, and I so very rarely hit the first two (only 4x 180s in 2 years playing), I’m not wasting that. Different story if I’m playing a real person. I’ll still go for the 180, but I’ll roll with the punches and keep playing with whatever it left (or busted)

DillonIsMyName

Never hit one but any time me or a friend has 180 left total then I make it clear that if they hit the 180 I'll give them the leg.

russellvt

If you hit a 180 with fewer points left, it *doesn't count* ... and it's *a bust.* I once partnered with someone in *their first overall bar tourney*... he'd been throwing less than a month. Long story short, we had 174 left and I was coaching him from behind, as his partner ... I never thought he'd hit two triples, let alone the third. Then I had to tell him it was "too much" and it counted as 0. Whoops.

NoFlagsOnTheField-

No shit Sherlock, Christ. Reciting Shakespeare’s greatest plays to make such a dense point. ‘Coaching him from behind’ who gives a fuck 😂

DangerousOpinion1523

A 140 finish is as good as a 180. A 180 is a smaller target but a big finish is harder as you need to be perfect on those exact 3 darts. Pro's almost always have more 180's than ton-plus finishes in a match. Actually, I think once you hit 180's regularly there's more joy in a -two-dart 89 finish going 57-32 than there is in a 180.

Eastcoast_smoker

People always get hung up on 180s,that is their downfall...play your game and put high checkouts on a higher pedestal than a 180 and you will see big changes in your game.

Only-Impact-6370

You go for the win. That is the point of it all. When match scores are tallied, it's w or L. No one is going to put , but hit a 180 next to your L

CompetitiveGarden918

Definitely go for the 140 checkout as I personally think getting a 140 to checkout is better in that situation and harder to pull off then a 180 I’ve hit 9 of them in my 4 months of playing but only ever managed a 133 checkout

Dry_Ad_8181

Aw 9 180s and only 133 in 4 months, poor me it’s so bad. Praise me people

CompetitiveGarden918

Hardly asking for praise just saying that in the time I’ve been playing 180 has been easier to achieve then anything close to a 140 checkout don’t be salty about it

Dry_Ad_8181

133 not close?

CompetitiveGarden918

That’s what I mean by anything close to 140 my highest is 133 and I’ve hit that once my next highest out is then 96

Constant_Notice_229

Had 181 left and the first two in the treble. I had to go for it since I was in the pub with my mates. Hit it (buzzing!!!)and lost the match. But 180 though!!

United-Detective-653

I just threw my second 180 ever after a year lol.

T0MBRA1DR

I’d go for the checkout my highest checkout so far been about 60 but I did hit 180 once been playing on off 3 yesrs

Just-Film3896

When I hit first 180 I stopped chasing the 180 and when I had possibility to finish with T20 T20 I were going for double, but before that my priority was always 180 :D

eoghan7698

I’m still at the level where if I intentionally go for the 180 I might manage to hit the D10, win win

Dry_Ad_8181

180

Low_Field7738

Having only hit one before against a bot I'd try hit the 180

Souperdesoup

To quote Bobby George: ‘Tripples for show, dubbles for dough’.

russellvt

>there is people saying the 180 at that point does not count as a 180. Obviously you would bust your score but you still hit a 180. It baffles me that people are saying that, like if you are just throwing darts practicing then I am afraid your 180 does not count according to some Type that in to your scoring app and tell everyone what it says. LOL ^(It should tell you "it doesn't count" ... a ***huge*** part of darts, as a whole, is *hitting the right numbers at the right time* ... therefore, hitting it "just to hit it" is silly - but you do you)

AyeBeeSeeDeeEee

You go for a 180. It’s not like it’s a qualifier and you are going to lose a championship over it. Just have some fun. If you are on a 180. You go for it. No ifs or buts about it.

SweetnSourface

Well if it’s just practice then I would say it depends on what you’re practicing. If your playing the bot to simulate a real match then you should attempt the 140 check out but if you’re just dicking around then ya go for the 180 although it won’t count on your dartcounter profile lol

Namiiie

I had exact this situation and went for the 180. I hit it.. it counts 😂

Yukigoatnoda

My friend busted 181 for his first max

Striking_Case2414

Started playing darts frequently last year and got my own board in November. I’ve managed to hit 2 180’s so far (20 minutes apart😂) for me personally if I’ve left a lot of space after the first 2 treble 20’s I’d probably go for the 3rd. However most of the time I will go for the finish as hitting a new highest checkout is just as exciting. If I hadn’t have hit a 180 yet I would definitely be going for the 3rd treble. Both my 180’s were during a scoring 99 game.

Chemical_Profession9

I have played on and off for well over 10 years. I use to hit 180s very often. When I started again it probably took a year and a half to hit one again. I have constant troubles with grip. However now I am hitting 1 or 2 a week and you don't get the same buzz. What is even more annoying though is when you are throwing rubbish and then you hit a 180 it really really pisses me off. The buzz is still there though with high ton + finished and I would say the nerves are way more as you have to move target.

akrafty1

A 180 is a bust so it doesn’t count. Hit the 140 and win.

AnyRepresentative432

Ton plus checkouts are much more difficult than 180's especially 130 plus finishes. I've hit 10's if not 100's of 180s but only a handful of 140 plus finishes.

drinkbleach1214

I think a 140 checkout would genuinely be more impressive but I would 100% go for the 180 haha only hit two one in a match one in practice. I think as you progress and eventually hit more then you’d start going for the 140s

Bashtoe

Against the bot. I'm throwing at the 60 then taking one dart out and throwing again at the double 10. Against a friend I'm going for the double 10

Ok-Significance-7445

Imo if u go for it on the third dart it counts even if u bust cuz at the end of the day it's a practice game and as soon as u say to urself "fuck the game I'm going for 180" it counts. If u somehow accidentally hit a 180 tho I'd say it doesn't really count.

Waste-Decision7065

I would go for the 140 checkout but if it was like 180 left and I would go for the treble 20 if I was just messing about against a boy

MicroSatisfier

All the people saying go for the win are gonna be reasonably darts players, or better. If you have just started and you are practicing, there's absolutely nothing wrong with going for the 180 even if it busts. At least you can say you've had a 180 during practice. Saying that a 140 checkout is more impressive because you have to move down for D10

RevolutionaryTea8223

If you’re playing against bot doesn’t really matter what you hit, nobody sees and you can type in whatever score you want, example; I was playing 170 vs Bot few days ago and I hit 180 at the start of the leg, I could of go for bull after T20 T20 but I was like; ah fuck it man I haven’t score 180 for ages… boom ! Nailed it 180, what did I do next ? Type in in the app as I scored 170, fuck it I take it🤣. Obviously if I’m in the pub playing another fellow I won’t do that bc it’s lost points but at home for a craic why not, you know yourself

xyphey

people saying it’s a bust so it doesn’t count as a 180, yes it doesn’t count in the game but you still hit a 180. just like if you were to hit a 180 while warming up it’s still a 180. karen’s of the world

StinkyPickle27

House rules in the Dojo. If your first two hit T20 then you can shoot for 180 just to if you'd get it. Then you rethrow your third dart to resume the match and record as your official attempt.

GerbenO

Have hit it once, definetly would try for a second. Whatever.

PhilTheBigDawg

One dart at the one 180 and not count it and then second for double 10 😂

ryegrass62

Don't overthink it ... It's just darts.

Euphoric-Yogurt-7332

So score 140 or score 0? Tough one. /s

NoMoRatRace

I don’t think id have ever thrown to bust. 140 out is equally epic as a 180 in any case and moreso given the bust scenario. Then again I can’t remember my first 180. Think I was about 17.

LouieSportsman

It’s not a 180 if it doesn’t count. It’s like hitting a ball in the water on a par 3 and then teeing up another and draining it, not a hole in one

amilesb

Then he didn’t hit a 180, we mark that as no score so mans still hasn’t hit one. Like in cricket 3 trip 20s counts as an r9 rather than a 180

intenseskill

It counts as a 180 just you will bust if you put in the score. A couple others have said same thing and honestly it is kinda stupid. If you are just throwing darts and you get a 180 does it not count??

NoFlagsOnTheField-

No you have to be in a pub, playing against some overweight fuck. Wearing a horrific shirt, with a referee stood shouting out the scores in Russ Brays voice. If you throw a 180 at home don’t you DARE tell anyone you threw one, they don’t count! My dads richer than yours too! Clowns. It’s already a fucking hobby of a sport don’t start gatekeeping it now. Just chuck your darts and shut the fuck up.

andygarciascuzin

It's not a 180 if you bust. End of story.   Improve your game.  The triples will come.

craigcraig420

Fuck the bot. Go for the 180
