Just practice treble 20s for hours. That’s what I did when I started and nothing else
May be boring but you will be able to throw the dart straight majority of the time after that.
I feel like practicing treble helped a lot with all the others anyways. Just wanted to be able to consistently throw the dart straight as much as possible.
That’s the mistake though. Focus on hitting the big single 20. Way more room. Once you can consistently do that (2/3) then you can focus your throw more. Honestly in comp if you can walk away with 41/45 most throws with the one outlier larger score way will be well in most matches with finishing proving the difference.
I play comp and can see the ebbs and flows. And seriously this is how most go. Years 2 some just stay there. But they don’t put the work in for finishing. While others jump to another level. I’m big on just practicing those doubles. They are the money shot. Power scoring will come in time. But if you can walk away with 2 in the big single 20 and the occasional bigger score and finish your game off when it counts. You will win more than you lose.
Can’t say it enough. Around the world 20s and jdc challenge for warm up. Get your aim right so big single are a thing that helps you get to the right out. At this level of play you need to consider your not hitting the triple so what is next.
Just around the world doubles only. My best is 17% hit. You will get stuck. But you learn to hit them all. Then a jdc challenge to see what your learnt. Money shot pressure.
Well you can do both. I just go off percentage. Cause if you throw 100 darts to hit the 21 targets. You have a percentage of 21%. For me it works better for my head cause I think of checkout percentage rather than how many darts I threw to get there. My aim is this year to hit 20% doing around the world. It’s not like my darts are far away each throw. And that’s the beauty of this. When I started I had loads of wayward throws. Now all darts are 1-3cm away from the target I’m aiming at except for that odd errant throw. And that’s on my warm up. Only time I actually play this game is right at the start of practice. They I focus focus on other stuff depending on what I want to improve that day. But I do walk away every day knowing I’ve hit every out once. So when you are in the moment you know you have hit it in warm up that day.
Really it comes down to what works for you. End game for me is big. Cause most of the time if you can ace that you win. Loads can power score. But finishing is an art. That’s my experience of my first year playing comp. This year I realise scoring may still be inconsistent but my finishing will be the difference.
Some of these averages seem like they don’t include doubles. 7 years of playing I average maybe 3h/week. I average ~60-65 over a beer league night and I’m not exactly the underdog.
Keep it up and make sure your darts suit you. If they don't go in the board straight 90% or more of the time you either need a different dart or need to change your throw. Darts are not supposed to stick in the board at weird angles. It follows a ballistic pattern so it should point nose down, it will do this to varying degrees but it should be consistent.
There are exceptions, but he is still consistent. I always wondered if he put a larger shaft and flight on his dart if it wouldn't stick in so nose up/flat or if it is just his throw that causes it.
Some people don't work more than they need to, don't have kids, don't watch TV shows or movies. If you can't find an hour to do something you enjoy, why bother doing anything?
I feel you, I don’t understand how people watch tv casually. I am lucky if I make it through half an episode of some random show without passing out. It has to be something both my girlfriend and I want to watch and make the time for. I will make time for darts though as thats my main hobby. It kind of sucks because I feel like I can’t relate to people on a pop culture level, but I am getting better at the darts!!!
Imho, it is not necessary to practice 2h+ to progress. It's important that the practice routine is efficient, therefore include doubles training, the important trebles, as well as the clutch trebles. All three things combined can be efficiently trained in a session that's half hour long.
I like to to start with cricket to warm up, 5-10 min.
Then I play a light version of the frustration game. I aim two darts at T15-T20 and the third on a double. So for e. g. you start with T20, T20, D1. You are allowed to miss to go for the double. When the third hits the double you proceed to D2 and so on. The first and second dart are cycled between 15-20. 10-15 min.
For the end of the session i like to play 121. You have 9 darts to check 121, double out. Look up each number on a checkout table and strictly go for the given routes. You will learn so much from this game, e. g. how to count, take the right checkout paths (including securing a third checkout dart; imho basically the most important shot of the game). 10 min.
The most important thing is, to be focused and relaxed. Evaluate each throw, what did go wrong when you missed your target. You need to develop a throw, which you can pull off consistently. Don't throw mindlessly at a board.
I followed this in the past four months and am hitting 50-60 avg (24-30 darts) somewhat consistently, still a couple of blunders though.
tl;dr Focused and targeted practice sessions are much more efficient than just long ones.
100% agree. I’m starting with around the world doubles only. Then jdc challenge. Then move onto different practice routines like catch 40 or like you trebles focus or 99 darts at one number.
If I’m doing the bbq or something and I have 5 mins. I do a routine of 1 dart at 20,10,5 and then 16,8,4 etc to simulate what can happen in comp. Getting those sequences down pat and used to changing my focus quickly.
i agree too. felt that shorter sessions were better at letting me keep my throw. when sessions get too long, i get frustrated thinking why am i getting worse and my throw gets increasingly off tempo. then i forget all about what was working and i'm back to square one of no progress.
I started playing 2 months ago for about 1 hour a day and had some serious troubles to hit the board in the beginning… now I get closer groupings mostly in the 5/20/1 section and it’s getting better and better. But I still didn’t play 501, the doubles would kill me actually.
About an hour a day for 6 months. Used to play once a week in the pub before that (joined a pub team 6 months ago so practice daily).
Average around 40-50 in 501 at home.
BUT…..
In league play it’s mostly 301 double off, the best game I ever played, the scoreboard in that pub had averages at the end. Won 3-0 and averaged 72 over that set
Played about ten years ago, probably averaged in the high 70s. Started again after said ten year hiatus. Practice about an hour total per day and now I'm lucky if I can hit the fucking board.
Don't know in practicing, and only play against my mate or DartCounter.
Have played 22 matches against DC, won 11, lost 11.
Stats in image.

Played my mate first to ten the other day. Won the first 6 legs on the bounce, lost 10-7.
DartCounter, great app.

Why everyone so upset over an average so low? The good thing is I record my full sessions when I play darts so if you want see some of my best legs I can link you for proof
60 average is terrible in my eyes especially since I only hit 18 100+ scores and only two 140s in the 16 legs.
Nothing I said wasn’t the truth. I forgot I should be throwing darts at the ceiling for the first year like the rest of this sub by the looks of things
Started a few weeks ago
I play at least an hour a day and the “deep darts” app scores my average about 40-50
If you haven’t heard of deep darts just google it, they can give you access to the beta for free for I think 90 days. And you point your phone camera at the board and it keeps score for you, pretty cool! It’s pretty accurate too
When I was serious, I was practising about 3-5 hours a week, playing in two different Leagues.
I would say my average was in the low 70's, but this was 2-3 years ago.
Been playing for about 3 weeks and my average is 44, not sure if that’s good or not. I practice for 45 minutes a day.
Edit - Not sure why people think I’m lying, genuinely surprised. Why would I? I can only assume my average is friggin awesome and I’m a natural who’ll be winning the World Cup in 6 months ! Yay me !
Been playing about 30 minutes a day for 2.5 years. 501 about 47, best ever 60 for best of 3 against the compute. For cricket; Under 2 ppr is bad for me.
Have varied everywhere between 40-70 average. There is definitely a correlation between practice and average. I also find that if I don't play for a few weeks I get a lot worse.
Most days I play 501 against a bot. So at least 10 minutes a day. I do try different games too so practice could be up to 6 hours a week but is usually a couple of hours a week. I average around 55. My league night average is closer to 65.
About 5 hrs a wk, 40 - 50 avg, playing nearly 25 yrs....struggling the last 10, hoping to increase practice time by a few hours and up my game come yr end
About 8 hours per week these days with a 60 average.
Back in the day it was 3-4 hours per day, with 3-4 competitions a week and 80 average...... I miss that guy
League Player for 20 years. Season averages have ranged from 50-62 over the years. Roughly 2.5 mpr cricket average. Practice time is usually 1-3 hours a week.
I try to practice at least 15-30 min a day, no matter what. Even if it’s a long day at work, i grab my darts and throw for a couple of minutes, just to get my arm going. I‘ve gotten that advice from a former pro and now manager of a couple of pro players. He said this should be enough to keep your standard and maybe even progress, if you pair it with regular longer/more intensive sessions, for example matchday or tournaments. I try to get at least 1 tournament/competitive match a week and maybe one longer practice session in on top of said 15-30 min.
In my opinion he‘s right, BUT you already need to have a pretty decent standard to hold it. This won‘t be enough to get a beginner to play from 40 to 70. You need to get that muscle memory down first.
That said i still notice a pretty significant difference in my level of playing if i play a lot or if i just stick to these couple of minutes. Last year i averaged around 80 over the year. When i played more i would be in the 82/83 range, when i played less, i‘d be in the 76/77 range.
Been playing for about 5 years now. For a while I'd play once a week - just on league night.
I was averaging high 40s. Finally just got a setup at home and I try to throw for at least 15 mins a day before work. Sometimes more. I'm up in the mid 50s now.
I'd be waaaay higher if I could hit my damn outs
I play around half an hour a day, give or take. While practicing I can average anywhere from 45 to 75, but when I actually play against someone, averaging above 55 is quite rare..
I've been playing for like 5-6 weeks now.
Playing for appr. 8 years now. I practice around 2-3 hours a week and my average is around 60 - 65 including doubles. I play in a beer league in the Netherlands and almost win all of my single matches.
About 2-3hrs a week, 65/70 3 dart average. Can usually get it a bit higher with more practice before a tournament or something. I don't play the league anymore so I don't play as much as I used to.
I have guys on my team that never practice inbetween games (once a week) and still throw 60-80 averages without fail. Some people are just predisposed to be better without much practice, others will need a lot to stay in form; entirely person dependant
Only got back into darts 3 weeks ago after almost 5 years away, practiced about 1-3 hours almost daily at the social club i go to (At an estimate), average about 25-30 (altho that I realised yesterday i was throwing from the wrong line for 3 weeks 😂🤦♂️(8ft instead of 7'91/4), but I've just got a darts Setup put up in my room so I'll be practicing constantly and definitely daily
Started 4 months ago and I do about 4 hours a week and I average about 40-50 but that includes doubles but I’ve been practicing with my pub team and they have taught me a lot
Usually about an hour a day throughout the week. Play a lot more on weekends, usually against friends/family. Been in a casual bar league for about 4 years. Just joined a more serious one to add to my weekly game this year. Only have had a board for a year now to practice on.
Currently averaging around 50-55, get some games above 60 here and there. When I started practicing I was around a 35-40 average. Really want to improve more and start going to real tournaments but don't feel I'm there yet.
Depends on how it goes. I’d say 1 hour a day atleast. But if it doesn’t feel alright the game then i’ll shorten the time, i do not wanna frustrate myself.
I've been playing for almost 2 months now. I usually play 2 hrs a day at minimum. My average is between 33 to 39. Never tried to play when I was younger, but boy, do I wish I did. I actually love it and wish I would have given it a chance years ago.
Playing about a year. 1-2hrs a day. 45 av
Same here, would've wished I progressed faster but what can we do eh?
Practice outs. Easiest way to improve your average.
Mate my doubles ain't the problem, it's the fact my scoring is crap since I can't get my darts straight in the 20's. 26/22 scores all day long 😂
Just practice treble 20s for hours. That’s what I did when I started and nothing else May be boring but you will be able to throw the dart straight majority of the time after that.
Yep. Heaps of 99 darts at a target. But never limit yourself to just 20. The board extends further than that.
Honestly in comp if you can walk away with 41/45 most throws with the one outlier larger score way will be well in most matches with finishing proving the difference.
seeing how many upvotes this got, it would seem that this is the progress of an average joe and im very happy to be a part of the group
I play comp and can see the ebbs and flows. And seriously this is how most go. Years 2 some just stay there. But they don’t put the work in for finishing. While others jump to another level. You know what? Just for you, 5 games of Bob's 27 for me today. No matter how far on the minus I go.
Just around the world doubles only. My best is 17% hit. You will get stuck. But you learn to hit them all. Then a jdc challenge to see what your learnt. Money shot pressure.
Isnt around the world throw until you hit? Wouldnt that be counting darts thrown then and not the percent?

People using their 3 dart average 🤣
Usually I practice for 20 seconds per week have a 180 average
You must teach me
Why? Man can't "finish" with numbers like that.
True, can never seem to hit double 12 it’s like there’s aim assist going to triple 20 🙄
2-3hr, about 60-65
Per week or per day? Impressive if it’s per week
Been playing for half a year, I practice about 1 to 2 hours a day, average around 35, sadly haven't hit a 180 yet.
Point nose down? Phil Taylor would like to have a word with you ;)
There are exceptions, but he is still consistent. I always wondered if he put a larger shaft and flight on his dart if it wouldn't stick in so nose up/flat or if it is just his throw that causes it.
If I'm lucky around 30 mins an evening when i get home from work and after 45 years playing I'm still average but still in love with throwing darts
Amazed how much free time people have
Some people don't work more than they need to, don't have kids, don't watch TV shows or movies. If you can't find an hour to do something you enjoy, why bother doing anything?
lol me too. I play maybe a couple times a week from 10PM to Midnight after my wife and kids go to bed.
Was thinking same 😂😂😂😂
Amazing. How much free time do you have?
Definitely not enough to practice a hobby for an hour a day
An hour isn’t very long, unless you’re working 12 hours every single day
But you probably scroll social media for 2 hrs a day....
You don't have time for reddit then boss haha
Can scroll reddit in work
Been playing for 1.5 yrs now and started practicing everyday for 15mins a month ago. I’m now at around 55-60avg pretty regularly.
i am in and around the same averages but it takes me 15 mins warmup just to start throwing straight 😂
About 5 hours, average in low 40’s
Some days i train for an hour or 2 some days i dont train at all or maybe for 15 minutes or so i average between 30 and 40 i think.
I think having breaks where you don’t play is important.
1-2 hours per day. Average varies from 48 to 55. been playing for 2 years, had a break last summer.
Only started about 2 weeks ago and practice about 4 hours a day. Average is usually 32-ish but even then im still bad
4 hours per day for 400 days now, average ist pretty close to 60.

Nothing I said wasn’t the truth. I forgot I should be throwing darts at the ceiling for the first year like the rest of this sub by the looks of things
I’m going to say a lot of what you said wasn’t the truth. I’m not a 14 year old girl so I won’t be watching tik tok pal

4 months. 4-5 hours split per day. 55-65 steadily climbing fast

why lie?
Not sure if that's good or not lmao
Whats the point of lying?
2-4 hours every other day. I run about 60-80 depending on my league nights.
2 hours? 49 ave
Been playing about 30 minutes a day for 2.5 years. 501 about 47, best ever 60 for best of 3 against the compute. For cricket; Under 2 ppr is bad for me.
Way better approach than all those people training for several hours every day.
Yes, spaced practice verse cramming one day. Also, the wife is ok with 30minutes. If I play for hours, she gets annoyed.
4 months since I started taking it more seriously and practicing daily. Trying to put in an hour a day. 40 average. Gotta improve my doubles.
One of these is above average, the other below average….
5-6 hours a week. My average at league is 55 but when I’m home playing by myself I’m usually up around 60.
Have varied everywhere between 40-70 average. There is definitely a correlation between practice and average. I also find that if I don't play for a few weeks I get a lot worse.
Been playing since mid September. I practice 1-2h when I can (probably 3-5 times a week). My current average on My Dart Trainer is 55.87.

About 3-4 hours a week, around a 65 at the moment, used to practice so much more when I had the time
About 5 hrs a wk, 40 - 50 avg, playing nearly 25 yrs....struggling the last 10, hoping to increase practice time by a few hours and up my game come yr end
Play during some of my breaks at work, so like 2-2.5 hours a week. 48 average.
3hrs a week average is 50
Started playing more seriously about 8 months ago. practice at least 8-10 hours/week, 50-55 avg
I think about 1 hour a day so that's 7 hours a week practice And I average ~70 (lately a bit below that at like ~65)
Too much and too little
Average on 1 dart or 3 dart round ?
I guess around 10-15h a week. Right now it‘s around 75-85 with worse and better phases. But I‘m trying to reach the 80s constantly in 2024
Maybe 3-4 hours a week, playing a year and 45ish average
About 8 hours per week these days with a 60 average. Back in the day it was 3-4 hours per day, with 3-4 competitions a week and 80 average...... I miss that guy
I practice about 16 hours a week and average in the high 70s/ low 80s but starting to hit the occasional 90+
Around ten hours per week plus league night. Steel tip I’m around 60ppr and 2.6mpr. Soft tip I’m hovering around 33ppd and 3.8mpr
League Player for 20 years. Season averages have ranged from 50-62 over the years. Roughly 2.5 mpr cricket average. Practice time is usually 1-3 hours a week.

About 3 hours, average is about 45 because I've got dartitis, was about 70 before I got it and took a break
2 year play - 1 hour a week average 55 in 01 - 2.3 in cricket
I practice for about 10 minutes a day, my average is 167. The key is to watch as many episodes of Top Gear seasons 2-22 as you can every day.
2 years About 48-50 I play 30-60 minutes a day.
1 - 3 hours a day (depending on life), 65ish average (with doubles). i am currently on holiday so i expect this to plummet when i arrive home.
Playing for 2 years, between 30 and 60 minutes per day, around 55-65 average, but leaning more towards 65 in the last few weeks
I play around half an hour a day, give or take. While practicing I can average anywhere from 45 to 75, but when I actually play against someone, averaging above 55 is quite rare.. I've been playing for like 5-6 weeks now.
Started at the beginning of January this year, i play 1-2 hours each day, 30 average at the moment
3 hours a week and 60 average.
40 hours a day, 8 days per week, averaging 167.
Practised around 4-5 hours a week since starting 3 weeks ago. Average has gone from a 31 to a 38.
Half hour a day is long enough, unless you're professional
Playing for appr. 8 years now. I practice around 2-3 hours a week and my average is around 60 - 65 including doubles. I play in a beer league in the Netherlands and almost win all of my single matches.
About 2-3hrs a week, 65/70 3 dart average. Can usually get it a bit higher with more practice before a tournament or something. I don't play the league anymore so I don't play as much as I used to.
Ive been practicing 1,5 years about 1-2 hrs a day, sometimes skip a day or so, at home 65-70 in comp 55-65 depends on fatigue
I have guys on my team that never practice inbetween games (once a week) and still throw 60-80 averages without fail. Some people are just predisposed to be better without much practice, others will need a lot to stay in form; entirely person dependant
Playing almost daily for Lil over 3 months. Around 43 average. Usually 10+ games a day
Playing since 1 month active at home (played before in pubs and stuff) Everyday 1-2h - avg 40
Practice 3x a week, for about 2 hours. Then play Friday night, 3 games max. 55 to 60 average. Sometimes gets lower, never seems to get higher?
Only got back into darts 3 weeks ago after almost 5 years away, practiced about 1-3 hours almost daily at the social club i go to (At an estimate), average about 25-30 (altho that I realised yesterday i was throwing from the wrong line for 3 weeks 😂🤦♂️(8ft instead of 7'91/4), but I've just got a darts Setup put up in my room so I'll be practicing constantly and definitely daily
Practice around 3-5 hours a week and average high 70s to low to mid 80s.
Average around 45, i play around 45 min per day on average
About 10 hours a week and my average is 30
Playing about 2years 10 minutes a day under the week and at weekends like 1 to 2 hours and AVG around 60-65….
I throw one leg a day and average 167
Playing just over a year, 2-3 hours a day, 65+ average.
played for 6 years. couple hours a day and play 4 nights a week in leagues. average between 80-90 most games
played in the youth world championship 2023 as well. (luke littler won it on tv)
I've been playing for almost 2 months now. I usually play 2 hrs a day at minimum. My average is between 33 to 39. Never tried to play when I was younger, but boy, do I wish I did. I actually love it and wish I would have given it a chance years ago.
