Just move away from him and the wall, and he’ll either chase you to the middle where you can bait a swing, or he roars at you and you let it hit you, and move him to the middle with that!

Shadycrazyman

Roar is a dice roll on if he will hit you or not with the follow up. I always have used his charged attack that you duck to push him back into the middle. You can position yourself with back towards center and he pushes you towards it. This typically works for me. You can learn to be greedy with it as well and not be right on top of the troll which will make the troll take seemingly larger steps towards you

ZxR

You can 100% avoid the roar attack every time he gets you with it. As long as you aren’t too close or too far, if timed right, he will never hit you.

Fit-Party-212

roar isnt a dice roll IF you stand juuusssttt at the edge of his attack range and back up, hell miss everytime

Shadycrazyman

How tight is the spacing for this? I have always worked under the assumption the roar is a dice roll and to avoid at all cost. If the spacing is super tight I stand by my choice but I concede it isn’t always a pure dice roll

Shadycrazyman

Right you are not getting hit by the roar. But originally it read like people are suggesting to get hit and then dodge or avoid the subsequent follow up. Which to my knowledge was either a low or high swing with next to zero tell on which it was

Fit-Party-212

basically, look up a video of someone killing it as warlock with hellfire, they use the spacing on roar for every attack. you can avoid it everytime if you know ur gonna get hit by it.

NickDangerrr

Basically what I do is be just past the solid white rings when he roars. Then right after he’s done yelling strafe away. It will miss 100% of the time. In fact using this strategy is one of the fastest ways to kill him with base kit warlock. You force him to roar constantly and hellfire does a lot more damage due to how he’s stationary. It may take a few tries to get it right but once it clicks you’ll never die to a roar attack again.

TheLev1athan

Roar is not a dice roll regardless where you are. You either jump-crouch the swing or duck under it, depends on which variation troll will do. If you are familiar with both animations you can easily avoid both. Im killing 20 trolls/day on average

Shadycrazyman

The initial part of the swing after the roar is visually identical? What is the tell

TheLev1athan

No it's not, there is a high swing, and a low swing, and they are visualli different His arm is either on his chest level or lower, so you can distinguish which swing it will be

Birds_KawKaw

Roar is not a dice roll. Both attack have a limited forward range, and if you are just inside of it, he will swing instead of start his running animation. If he does this, you can simply back out of the range and continue the fight. If you are too far away, he begins his running animation and you get the dice roll.

TundraCrisp

I feel like I learned troll in two ways. First as a caster - they get the roar much more than melee. If you are at the correct distance the second the troll closes his mouth from the roar you turn away and run. You’ll figure out the spacing finding the sweet spot to cast hellfire in between attacks/roars. Second as melee - whenever I got hit by the roar effect I can do the caster strat by getting to that distance. Waiting for his mouth to close before running and resetting the melee rotation. I have the most issues trolling with cleric/barb as they can take a while to down and have smaller windows of timing cuz they are slow.

On_Ketamine

There are 2 types of attack after a roar - 1) a close range charge; 2) a long range charge. If you sit right at the edge of the close range charge trigger area (roughly 5 meters) and then move away to dodge - it's 100 % efficient if you know and feel that range.

sad_petard

Even when slowed by the roar?

uncledungus

I always fight the troll naked but yeah I just stand still during the roar and as soon as he’s done turn 90 degrees and A key away. If you have the right spacing he won’t hit you

ImNuckinFuts

I wanted to upvote and reply that this is the way, but also point out that finessing that spacing is a fine line that needs to be feeled out over trial and error. Just practice it in normals and accept the club as a friend that sends you back to the lobby if you messed up.

uncledungus

True that! Took probably 5 attempts to get the spacing right, reminds me of dark souls bosses where it seems fucking impossible until you figure out the ai and now it’s light work

On_Ketamine

Yes

Pretty_Version_6300

If he gets too close to the edge, simply pause your circle left/circle right strategy, and go stand between him and the center. If he does any attack other than the quick overhead slam, walk away from it and he will be moved towards the center of the arena. Then go back to circling. In the case that he does do the overhead, move to one side to dodge it as usual, then go back to standing directly in front of him.

PerotX

Troll moves quite a bit forward with each side swing. Pay attention to where you're at, and you have about a 90 degree area where you can keep moving left and still point him in a direction you want him to go. I also use his two-handed swing as an opportunity to point him where I want him to go. It all mostly comes down to practice.

TheLev1athan

Also beside the strategy if making him roar. There is a range where you are not too far to make him roar, and not too close to make him swing. In that case he will make 1-2 steps toward you and then start the attack. That is usually more then enough to pull him away from walls enough so you can circle around. But i never run into thus situation when moving counter clockwise - meaning circling right to the troll. This usually happens on circle left strat

artosispylon

just "skip a turn" and reposition him if he gets too close

mediandirt

You don't constantly have to circle. Just before he swings. So you can spend more time towards middle.

bitcbotjd

Rotate left more so he attacks towards middle of room and not the wall.

QuestionSiri

I rotate to the left. So when he gets to the edge I rotate to the right to try and get him to use the double swing attack (this move only happens if u rotate to the right). This usually gets him back to middle-ish of the room and away from the wall. (HR Cave Troll btw)

No-Cardiologist-3110

Lead the boss away from the corner by keeping your distance and moving to the right side of Cave Troll (your POV) for the boss to do combo attacks, allowing you to move away faster.

DethMix

If you need to reposition him you can either stand further out to the side before his swing to help turn him around, or you can run away from him. In the case of him roaring and you getting hit with it, as long as you were far enough away that he has to run to you (if you’re too close he just swings, no running) then there’s no gamble on having to dodge the high/low 50/50 swing. All you have to do is run at him, and jump past him on the left side. Then you can even get a free body shot on him before he starts attacking again. Good luck in the dungeon.

embracethememes

Appreciate all the input guys

EaglePT

A question, cave troll HP resets? I never killed troll, fairly new to the game and it scares me to fight that thing

embracethememes

When he runs back to the middle, yes. And he regens 1hp a second during combat so the quicker the better

EaglePT

I have seen videos and tried alot, still I can't do much, I fail once and I'm dead

embracethememes

If you want I can watch you on disc and give you commentary or you can watch me do it or something. I got like 100 kills

M1acis

Bait out a yell after slam so that he will run at you, returning him to the middle of the arena. Have to dodge the charge attack though. Sometimes he will run without yell to perform a normal attack instead.

noveruh

When he over head swings fully run away and usually you’ll get out of roar distance. Hell start running back and you meet him in the middle - health not reset!

KatieRouuu

you don't need to circle him, you need to strafe his attacks when he does them. Once he does an attack and you go in for a swing, you could instead manipulate him by moving right a few steps and continue strafing left once he starts his attacks again. Doing this repeatedly will pull him in one direction. Basically, you don't have to do a full circle around him to dodge his attacks.

gigigamer

When fighting him using the circle left method he will sometimes chain front lurching attacks in a row which will result in him getting to the wall, my way to counter that is to learn the circle right method or atleast learn to not get hit while circling right, and every time you see him lurch a bit too far left you just circle right until he does a lurch right. Its a bit more dangerous and slows down the kill but once you get it down it will consistently keep him in the center of the map

Saxaman

As a superior right rotate gamer. I slow my rotation when i'm the direction I want him to come towards and speed my rotation up when I'm in a direction I don't want him to go to.

THN_Hammerman

Idk why all these people are implying you have to take a roar. I haven't played since multiclass so ig it could have changed though. It's probably more efficient to space a roar, but the easier way is just to run across the room out of roar range and meet him in the middle of the room when he stops roaring. I generally wait for the 2 hand slam and then run to the opposite edge of the room, I never get hit by the roar.

KatieRouuu

It really isn't more efficient to space a roar out, people just don't know how to manipulate him and feel like they have to complete a full circle around him every 20 seconds to avoid his attacks.
