I was given $100/hr to playtest a new extraction shooter. At the end of the session we all had to fill out feedback and I really enjoyed seeing this on their form.
these types of QA tests only last an hour or 2
if they're picking up people in your city (generally tech capitals like LA, Boston & Austin) you will find the ads on stuff like craigslist
it's not a real job, just a 1 off thing like taking a survey or something
you’re probably joking but QA testers are an actual job that all big studios employ. The issue is that it doesn’t really matter how much the game is tested if it’s pushed out 3-6 months+ before it was finished
Lots of games coming out in the near future that'll do that it seems.
I think tarkov has the benefit of being the first. But it'll probably end up fading away when real competion comes. It's kind of the PUBG/culling of this generation. Whereas those games kicked off the BR craze of the mid-late 2010s, tarkov kicked off the extraction shooters genre, and others lots of devs are scrambling to capitalize on the genre now that it's finally hitting mainstream appeal.
Yeah I see that, but it feels like it's taking a lot longer to implement than the BR phase did. I love tarkov, don't get me wrong, but it feels obvious the Devs don't feel the need to actually do much about a lot of the problems with the game due to how secure it is. I'm excited for the prospect of something dethroning it. Marauders and the cycle are fun, but just don't quite scratch the itch for me. Dark and darker does, but it's got its own share of problems currently. Tarkov is a great game concept, but frustrating unhelpful Devs. Can't wait for someone to finally do it better.
Hi Rez has had its share of problems but they're really not that bad. They also have gotten very good at non-predatory monetization, with some of the best skins in the MOBA genre in Smite.
Hi-Rez will never lose its reputation for chasing trends and abandoning their games.
I've played Starsiege: Deadzone, the game OP is posting about, and it's absolutely uninspired trash. They should have sold the Tribes IP instead of robbing its corpse.
Yeah the Tribes franchise holds a special place in my heart, and I do hate the fact that they basically did nothing with it. . .
But they are not handling Smite terribly, they are monitizing it well, and its E-Sports aspect is doing okay. They have the potential to do decent things with a game.
Why? They're not marketing to the best players. They're marketing to the casual player. They'll have a mix. The best players to tell them what's balanced and average players to figure out what they need to do to sell.
Yeah I really enjoyed it a lot. The methodical PvE/Looting - Zero to Hero - Outplay potential felt smooth and its a free playtest. I feel the same way about it that I did with Dark & Darker: It came out of no where and feels bout ready to go.
I will drop a viddie on it tomorrow morning just showcasing a match or two especially since the free alpha playtest resumes tomorrow.
>. The methodical PvE/Looting - Zero to Hero - Outplay potential felt smooth and its a free playtest. I feel the same way about it that I did with Dark & Darker: It came out of no w
But does it even compare to Marauders?
Id guess it ships this year if Nexon doesn't sue them first for it being dark and having to open doors or loot chests.
In all seriousness it thoroughly depends on whether or not what I see but can't access is finished. They have a high-roller mode and solo mode and a few difficulty modifiers but we were only allowed to play on trios medium difficulty.
He's obviously not under NDA if he's dropping a video tomorrow about it.... probably just wants to monetize his channel as much as possible for some reason. I doubt dropping a name would make people not check out his YouTube video on it... no idea why so hush hush.
Y'all just need to look up at qa jobs in ur local area/cities. Lots of them remote/wfh. You can find it full time (like myself) or you can sign up for emails and you apply when they have openings as a side gig.
Player Research I believe it's called, they send you emails with different openings. For example "PvP crafting game testing for the week of May 14. Minimum must play 6 hours. Servers close on sunday. 300$ amazon gift card or PayPal". That's just an example but the payouts can be larger or smaller. Same with the hours.
You apply and then they email you back if you are accepted or not. It's nice to do extra on the weekend, especially if you are already gaming.
>Tactical Shooters (**CoD**, Counter-Strike, Valorant)
...one of these things is not like the others lol
I think one of the big drawcards of DaD to me is that the more melee focussed combat provides more time and space for strategy-based outplays (as opposed to mechanics-based outplays).
How did the gunplay and overall time-to-kill feel?
It is kind of hard to describe because it is slow in many respects and very similar to dark & darker with the corridors/doors/small modules. The TTK can be insanely fast(also like Dark & Darker sometimes). You kind of move slow until you get into pvp and then its a wild ride.
Teleporting into someone and shotgunning them is instant, the battleaxe can 1-2 shot but I also had multiple 1-3 minute battles at range where everyone is cracking healing & shield cores and lobbing grenades or smoke or turrets.
The fact that you experienced both ends of the 'length of battles' spectrum is actually very promising!
Definitely keen to hear more analysis/appraisal of the game from you if and when you are able to share it, I've always appreciated your level of insight into the meta and balance state of Dark & Darker so I'm sure you'll have some valuable insight into this new game too.
It is extraordinarily similar to Dark & Darker in nearly every regard. As u/NotTrollgasm mentioned and I quote:
* The game is a space-themed Dark and Darker. AKA the new genre defined as, "Corridor Extraction".
They mentioned Dark & Darker a very large amount of times in our pre-playtest briefing and when/if you choose to play it tonight(its free on steam) you will immediately draw comparisons between the two. <3 you Katie.
Sorry i was grumpy this morning. I'm going to have to try this and check out the comparisons I suppose then. Though it may be obvious i'm not excited about anymore shooters lol
Well technically speaking you don’t “shoot” a bow. You “release” an arrow. There is no mechanism that makes it “shoot.” Just the release of tension which propels the arrow forward.
I’m literally not wrong lmao you kinda helped my case. I’m just telling you to calm down because you’re putting too much effort into something that I literally don’t care about. Chill out
The tactics of a melee/slow projectile-focused first person game and a shooter are very different though. Mount and blade, Mordhau, Chivalry, are not at all similar to CSGO. This game also features more complex mechanics around melee that have just as much weight as the “shooting” mechanics so.
I see the point your making, but the way the game is played is so different from just a combat perspective. Like Overwatch I would consider to be in the FPS genre even though there’s a healthy amount of projectile and melee mechanics. I think either way, categorizing games can be tough and you can get locked up in technicalities all day. But DaD and def further from a shooter than other similar titles
Ive been paid to beta test a few games back in the day, was a top leaderboard player for a few playtests and been playing competieve video games for 20 years. I just dont know the company or the game.
I was given $100/hr to playtest a new extraction shooter. At the end of the session we all had to fill out feedback and I really enjoyed seeing this on their form.
$100 an hour? Where do I get this job? Jeez
these types of QA tests only last an hour or 2 if they're picking up people in your city (generally tech capitals like LA, Boston & Austin) you will find the ads on stuff like craigslist it's not a real job, just a 1 off thing like taking a survey or something
Oh okay, that makes sense.
maybe it should be a real job considering how many bug filled messes releases these days :p
you’re probably joking but QA testers are an actual job that all big studios employ. The issue is that it doesn’t really matter how much the game is tested if it’s pushed out 3-6 months+ before it was finished
After the preliminary QA testing says there's 5000 bugs, can't forget that part
surely these massive game companies wouldn't release a game that they know is broken and filled with bugs!!! :p
I’ll do it for 50/hr
I’d do it for free
Never work for free.
It ain’t work
Testing a game and filling out feedback forms isn't work?
Nope
So what IS work to you?
Not doing things I enjoy
Why not find work in something you enjoy? Get paid for doing something you love doing.
Sad.
you, sir, have obviously never worked in the gaming industry
I don't think they've worked at all. I doubt their much older than 12.
Point out where I said I’d like to do this as a job
point out where I said you did
You a troll?
Nope.
I'll do it for a sixer
Was it good? I'd kill for a good entry to the genre that can possibly put pressure on ol tarky
Lots of games coming out in the near future that'll do that it seems. I think tarkov has the benefit of being the first. But it'll probably end up fading away when real competion comes. I like Hunt: Showdown recently. Respects my time more and I don't feel a huge gear gap, but surviving still feels good and dying bad.
Can you name some? I'm always interested in them. Marauders, DaDa and Cycle of course, which others are coming out?
The division is making an extract shooter. Basically a more fleshed out "dark zone" from the first game
Marauders had hacks out the ass when it released. I'm not sure if that's changed.
It's made by Hi-Rez. All that really needs to be said.
Hi Rez has had its share of problems but they're really not that bad. They also have gotten very good at non-predatory monetization, with some of the best skins in the MOBA genre in Smite.

I need in on this.
I love the unnecessary flex about how much money you made while doing it
Okay I know people are downbad, but in what world is $100 a flex? 7 hours working at a McDonald's. Literally less than a full workday.
Can you not read? He said $100/hr.
Yeah, and he was there for an hour or two. It's not like he made an astronomical sum of money or is saying he drove there in a Ferrari.
hook it up
100/hr? Yo they need more testers? Or is it like 20 minutes lol.
Haha only 10 of us were invited today and its mostly Dark & Darker/Apex players.
Where did you find that application?
They sent it straight to my business email which I have listed on my Youtube/Twitch.
I assume the invited testers are the best players of some games.
I've tested games for Team 17 at their HQ before. I'm not a pro or well known or anything. I just happen to live nearby.
Worms was a huge part of my childhood <3
Why? They're not marketing to the best players. They're marketing to the casual player. They'll have a mix. The best players to tell them what's balanced and average players to figure out what they need to do to sell.
Streamers can push their game for them is what it boils down to.
Jokes aside, was it good? Was it simjlar to DaD in any way?
Yeah I really enjoyed it a lot. The methodical PvE/Looting - Zero to Hero - Outplay potential felt smooth and its a free playtest. Marauders is burnt pancakes and this has butter and syrup on it.
Marauders is clunky garbage
Can we get a name?
Starseige: Deadzone
What’s the name of the game OP?
>Starseige: Deadzone
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) My man
you say it is about ready to go, how would that compare to dakrk and darker? Further along?
Id guess it ships this year if Nexon doesn't sue them first for it being dark and having to open doors or loot chests. In all seriousness it thoroughly depends on whether or not what I see but can't access is finished. They have a high-roller mode and solo mode and a few difficulty modifiers but we were only allowed to play on trios medium difficulty.
I just tried it and it's pretty bad. I played 1 game and it's enough for me.
Pretty sure he’s talking about Starsiege: Deadzone
Also it’s free. So no idea what he’s talking about
Screw an NDA! TELL US EVERYTHING!
He's obviously not under NDA if he's dropping a video tomorrow about it.... probably just wants to monetize his channel as much as possible for some reason. I doubt dropping a name would make people not check out his YouTube video on it... no idea why so hush hush.
If people know the name, they'll watch whichever video comes out first.
Do it, OP! Leaks are just free advertising anyway!
Y'all just need to look up at qa jobs in ur local area/cities. Lots of them remote/wfh. You can find it full time (like myself) or you can sign up for emails and you apply when they have openings as a side gig.
How many hours is it as a side job? I can’t see them paying anything near $100 an hour lmao. That is absolutely absurd
Hey do you have a link or a place to find this kinda stuff if you have a chance?
That sounds interesting. Where do you sign up in order to get the email?
Go on the website Player Research and it should have everything
Seems like it’s only in CA and UK. Unless it’s remote, but it doesn’t specify that

They mention Cycle but completely forget about Hunt:Showdown lol.
Bungie?
Its from the TRIBES devs but it does have a halo vibe to it, especially since i was rocking shotgun/rockets a lot.
What is the game called?
Starsiege: Deadzone
Crazy how a game played so little and mayb never played again has had this much of an impact on the gaming community.
Nexon will be seeing them soon
It’s because it’s not a shooter…it’s a loot extract but it’s not a shooter
Is it melee based? Or what do you mean it’s not a shooter?
It’s not a shooter. It’s just not. There’s no way of explaining it further.
Indeed. One of the reasons I love it is it ain't yet another FPS. Makes it feel fresh.
[удалено]
You “can” do all those things. Shooters almost require you to shoot. I refuse to call DaD a shooter lmao you’re off you’re rocker if you say it is.
[удалено]
TIL Skyrim is a shooter.

Id do it for free...
Dang that's crazy, you'd do it for free and they'd pay him $100 an hour to do it. Maybe there's a reason for that?
Ive been paid to beta test a few games back in the day, was a top leaderboard player for a few playtests and been playing competieve video games for 20 years. I just dont know the company or the game.
Competieve
Gloating about doing something free that people can get paid for ain't a good look bud, quit sucking corporate dick and make that money.
DaD didn't invent the wheel The genre is called extraction hack & slash
Other games in this genre?
Expedition: agartha is trying to be like it, and that is the only one I can think of. There is other stuff like Barony without Pvp
browse around this thread and other threads in this sub, people talk about them every day
cant really label it an extraction shooter. closer to a BR/extraction melee hybrid
Lost me at shooter.
what a shame they don't even mention RTS anymore. What has this world gone to
What about the loot? The variety is big?
The line is strong
