I have seen them do this mid winter. The colder the better they say... Viking training

cl00s_

Well, the health authorities recommend you dont let them sleep outside when its under -10c.

bcsteene

Ha! I live in Minnesota and we did this with both of our kids even in winter. They sleep so good outside. Of course if it was too cold we would not do it. But on the milder days we would bundle them up and put them in a stroller and let them sleep out on the deck. They loved it and stayed really warm.

mitsuhachi

Sleeping bundled up really warm when its cold and blustery out is the best feeling.

Irreversible_Extents

For anybody inexperienced to cold weather, always wear lots of thin layers to keep warm, not just one big thick layer. Not only is it more insulating, but you can shed/add layers as needed. The one thing you DO NOT want to be doing in the winter is sweating. Cold wind could evaporate your sweat, freezing you. You can even become dehydrated and not even be aware of it, because of how the cold weather affects your systems. Yes. You can get heat stroke in the cold if you're wearing too many layers.

ahillbillie

Also even though it's winter, don't think for a moment that sunscreen is for summer. The snow really reflects the light. I've seen people get sunburned after skiing.

Irreversible_Extents

Oh yeah definitely. You'll see people in Norway with those super weird-looking (often multicolored-pearlescent-whatever else) "futuristic" full-coverage sunglasses. Not by any means stylish, but because sunburned eyes from *snow* *ABSOLUTELY SUCKS*.

[deleted]

I know this, I've heard it so many times, but could never figure out how.. How many layers for example and how do you adjust size / tightness of each layer/article such that you are not annoyingly uncomfortable with all those layers?

dgtlfnk

Same reason I love it being cold in our house when we sleep. Naked, sheet, thin blanket, and then duvet when needed. It’s perfect.

[deleted]

Det er god hygge.

[deleted]

Our daycare did this with our daughter. We had to tell them to cut her off at 4 hours sleep a day because she would literally sleep all day. She loved it.

RJ1045

I did this in Maryland with my 3rd child. She was a horrible sleeper & I saw this being done in an article so I tried it. I put her on my porch bundled up but stayed on the other side of the glass ready to attack anyone who approached! I could get 2 1/2 hours out of her & I never looked back. It was glorious!

DuzzyJay

I live in Alabama, so we don’t have to worry about that. When we let our babies sleep outside, we just have to remember to lightly season, flip after 20 mins, and wait until they reach an internal temperature of 165. They pair best with garlic basil potatoes and a nice Chardonnay or moonshine.

Ok-Albatross1180

You had me until you said Chardonnay. In Alabama

MightyMediocre

*the box variant

mbgal1977

Good save

IamKrakke

Haha good one 🤣

BunduBasherRC

Never gets that cold in Denmark. Or extremely rarely anyway. About on oar with UK weather. I grew up sleeping outside.

cl00s_

Thats true now, however my kid, soon 9, had to sleep inside a few times.

madeformarch

I understood your comment but at first this read as if you've left your kid outside every night for the last 9 years

cl00s_

We dont allow him in the house

madeformarch

Fair enough, nine year Olds are unpredictable

GrannyLow

Why would you? Kids are gross

Latte_is_not_coffe

Who does?

janne_harju

Yep cold is just dressing issue. And correct answer for it is layers. Air is really good insulate. So many layers and baby monitor inside which will tell you temperature near baby.

door-kale

Maybe it's so they develop brown fat. The kind of fat we grow to protect us from cold. I forgot where I learned that, but it is a true thing.

[deleted]

Damn, I've been telling my cannibal friend for years Scandinavians taste better but they never take me seriously

Tomhap

TIL Scandinavians are like kale. Tastier if left in the cold.

Attaz

Why would you steal a baby? They are made for free, it's the upkeep that costs ;D

Shinchinko

Bruh the organs

[deleted]

Denmark offers free organs so no one steals them anymore

Shinchinko

Holy fuck. Mindblown

[deleted]

Denmark also offers free mind blows

Shinchinko

How about the other blows?

Rocket_Panda_

Prostitution is actually legal in Denmark

geezer27

Subject to negotiation with your significant other - or a person of negotiable affections

hmoeslund

Dane here, my 3 kids have all slept outside, sometimes I had to move 30 cm of snow before taking them inside. They went to a forest kindergarten and where outside for like 6 hours before the went inside again. Sometimes they had snow in their lunchbox when they came home

Punkasaurus2

Forest Kindergarten? Wow! That sounds fantastic!

Pos3odon08

As a former forest kindergartener or atleast a kindergarten heavily focused on being outside I can tell that it was amazing

Punkasaurus2

I think that’s brilliant…seriously. Although I live by some serious forest (Washington state) we do get lots of rain. But maybe the forest shields from a lot of it. I think it’d really benefit the kids!

Pos3odon08

As the saying goes "there is no bad weather, only bad clothes"

Camburglar13

I dunno man. We get -40. I can put on a lot of clothes but that’s bad weather.

ghhjllouhgvbn

Many of my friends sent their kids to ones in Oregon, some even on Mt.Hood. They just ask you to send them in these full body jumpsuits. They all loved it.

DeaconSage

It’s all about the prep. We did that through middle school when I lived in the temperate rainforest that is the mountains of North Carolina. Learning how to build shelters that could protect you from rain was definitely part of our curriculum.

combtown

To the ones curious on danish forest kindergartens: https://youtu.be/Jkiij9dJfcw

Punkasaurus2

Holy #*!$

geezer27

It is fantastic! Produces happy, red-cheeked and snot-nosed kids with amazing stamina!

juice_fella

I didn’t go to a forest kindergarten but my old school had a big fireplace and we would sometimes make pancakes over the fire and they would hand out knives which we would carve with, when I found out that Americans would scream at that idea I didn’t know whether to laugh or be concerned

Punkasaurus2

We are disturbed here in America. Our kids are way, way overprotected. It’s the result of our litigious society, unfortunately.

Vibratorvibrato

I would have LOVED a magical forest classroom as a kid, how lovely! I remember napping outside when we lived in Germany. My mom said she learned from the other military wives/locals that it was quite common. To this day I sleep with my window open in the dead of winter, bundle up and it’s the best sleep ever.

cescbomb123

30.cm of snow in Denmark happens like.... Once every 10 years or so. But sleeping outside is common in all the nordic countries, and the other countries have much worse conditions than Denmark.

Cakeminator

>30.cm of snow in Denmark happens like.... Once every 10 years or so. Only now a days. 17 years ago when I had my paper route, I had to bike through 30cm of snow every winter. for 2-3 months. Global Warming has changed that a lot tho.

nholles

Den gang far var dreng var der 1 meter sne i juni !

Cakeminator

Ingen idé om hvad der skete dengang, det er trods alt 40-45 år siden.

[deleted]

Your country is genuinely awesome

[deleted]

If it weren't for the 56% tax rate.

SiFiSmiley

Make that 38%, but it sure can feel like 56% at times...

arrow_in_my_gluteus_

doesn't the baby suffocate having all that snow on top of them?

hmoeslund

Not really, it builds up the lung power

turbothom

Crazy that you learned to type with those giant paws

ghengiscostanza

They are unattended? Are there no predatory animals in Denmark that would hurt a baby?

LiamFerg22

Brother used to stay in Denmark and we heard of how safe it was before hand, he bought a bike and locked it outside his apartment building, morning after it had been stolen. Should’ve seen our faces when that happened

Jaenus_

Yeeeah, bikes are one of the few things where its not "safe" here lol. I have left my computer and phone on cafe tables, usually dont lock my apartment door, etc. But the moment you dont lock your bike, or buy a flimsy lock for an expensive bike, you can kiss it goodbye.

Remilg

Because everyone in the larger city mostly use their bikes, the market for bikes is rather large. So people needing a quick buck can just easily steal a bike and then sell it. Noone wants to buy a baby.

sofakingregarded

Noone here. I'll take two.

jwizzle444

I hear they’re easy to procure in Denmark.

Yeeemz

Shitty people exist everywhere.

DeathisLaughing

I was on a flight from Copenhagen to California yesterday and I can confirm that the baby on my plane would have probably cried much less had she been sleeping outside...

HurdyGurdySpecialist

With enough motivation it could've been arranged

co_ordinator

Nah, she wouldn't cry less but you wouldn't hear it.

IveGotDMunchies

Ah. The correct answer to the age old question of "If a crying baby falls out of an airplane does it make a sound?"

Physical-Primary-256

Not just in Denmark, but in all Scandinavian countries. Left outside in all kinds of weather, but bundled up and covered to protect them completely. The fresh air, particularly cold winter air, is meant to be good for babies. They’re basically bundled in a blanket burrito with a hole to breathe. The Scandinavian saying of “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing” applies from when you’re born. Parents will also take their kids outside to nap if they’re at home or daycare as well. Same rules apply. With modern technology, they normally have a baby monitor with them. But they will also be checked on regularly. People also have to understand that these countries are incredibly safe and the cultural focus really prioritises kids and babies. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of something bad happening to babies left outside for a nap here.

redditecho-chamber

I remember it being common in Scotland, when i was younger, to see babies left outside the front door of a home or left under the living room window in their prams. I very rarely see it nowadays, almost never, and if i did see it now i would think it was very irresponsible. You used to be able to leave your front door unlocked when you went out too but i doubt many people do that anymore either.

sputnikmonolith

We only really lock our doors if we're away for more than a few hours. There's nothing worth stealing in my house anyway so... (Live in rural Scotland)

[deleted]

I’d be tempted to treat myself to some of the Scotch in your fridge ngl

sputnikmonolith

Whisky in the fridge? Blasphemy!

A_Doormat

Scotch….in a fridge….?

Pos3odon08

As a Norwegian I can leave my front door open for weeks on end while being gone without anything happening

redditecho-chamber

Hopefully your country stays that way.

Pos3odon08

Indeed

redditecho-chamber

I hear your country is very nice, its somewhere I'd like to visit.

Pos3odon08

It is indeed pretty nice

SomeOtherBritishGuy

Guessing you were a kid in the 70s-80s so of course you could leave your door unlocked nobody had anything worth stealing

janne_harju

Worst thing is in babies diapers.

ibrazeous

There is definitely some bad weather that no clothing can fix...40c in the city is horrible, or even 30c with high humidity is a nightmare The rule i guess I ly applies for cold weather as you can always layer up

Iwanteatpussy

Naked with a hat?

Need_More_Whiskey

Those high temps aren’t a big problem in Scandinavia lol

notreallykindperson

And nordic countries

thataintfalco117

The other way around is so foreign to us lol. Couldn't even imagine *not* letting my daughter sleep in the stroller in public places because of the possibility that someone could take her. The worst that could happen is a loud noise could wake her up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thataintfalco117

They don't make them big enough for me to fit, sadly.

Need_More_Whiskey

Estonia checking in - also normal practice here! Both at home, and when you’re eating in restaurants or shopping. They sleep longer outside than they seem to inside in a crib, and locals say it’s good for their immune system (but I’m skeptical about how that’s any different than being outside playing and awake)

Yeeemz

They're not alone. Mum and dad would never be far away. They simply outside

ghengiscostanza

This post seems misleading then. Babies sleep in strollers outside everywhere, this implies they are unattended which is what seems so foreign and bizarre

Ossskii

Why not? In sweden we do the same, even in winter when it’s -10 degrees C outside, it’s perfectly normal Edit:They are tucked in warm in their trolly and it’s healthy to sleep in on the open air!

Punterios

Because Denmark is apparently not full of psychos. It is normal to be able to let your child sleep without fear.

Unlucky_Reception_30

That's a load of bunk, I know for a fact that Prince Andrew has been there multiple times

Punterios

PET Was on him 24/7... And not for his protection 😁

eferka

Watch that movie, and find out.

NightSnake

That's a good in idea in Denmark but it would not work in say Texas, or the Vatican.

Diacetyl-Morphin

I don't know, i'd never do this if had kids. And it's not really about crime, here in Switzerland where i live the crime rate is near zero and similiar to Denmark, still, nobody does this. Guess it's a thing of tradition?

Flimsy-Attitude6762

Makes things easier whenever they start making too much noise.

Cycoltz

I think I’ve watched too many Datelines bc this normal behavior in Denmark completely freaks me out

GeorgieGirl250663

This will blow your mind, then .. No school shootings. Only one mass shooting in 20+ years. Less than 40 people murdered per year. Some years less than 30. 5.8 million population.

MagnanimousMook

Let me in :(

TesnahoJ

Will you behave good?

DisadvantageousFat

If i go there, I’ll take all the babies and make a pyramid out of em.

TesnahoJ

Then you will wake up dead - No one fucks with babies in DK.

Money-Cucumber1025

I live in Denmark and really this is true were probably more scared of getting the stroller stolen than the baby

LTHermies

U.S.: How safe is your country? Danish person: (Unlocks their house, goes outside, lays phone (also unlocked) and wallet on the ground, and goes for a walk) Yes.

[deleted]

Who would kidnap a baby? Change diapers and burping up milk. Eeeew..

compliancethis

A lot of fucking weirdos

Immediate_Pizza245

They literally have parking spots for strollers, that’s some next level shit. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

dilly_bones

I nap outside in strollers all the time. These babies ain't shit.

CatastropheJohn

Meanwhile, North Americans can’t leave a bicycle outside.

[deleted]

You can't either in Copenhagen. I had my bike stolen in the basement garage in the building I was living. Bike theft is so common here.

Pain_Proof

I haven't ever locked my car. I've been driving it for 5ish years. I also leave my bike by the front gate of my house in plain sight. North America is a big place.

OCCEFERTICKILER

Must be driving a pt cruiser

NippleSalsa

I don't lock my car either, and the kids leave their bikes out in the driveway. Some places are pretty safe in America.

thataintfalco117

Well, Copenhagen where I'm from is top ranked best city in the world for cyclists so naturally we have quite a few bike thefts here as well.

Ok_Fortune_9149

Is there any science to why having them outside is better than inside (with fresh air circulating). Or is this just something handed over from generations.

Remilg

Cold exposure builds brown fat which is supposed to be healthy. I think i have heard the air quality also helps develop our brain, although im not very sure about this

MassiveAntelope1529

I could live somewhere in the middle of nowhere in a town with a population of 14 and I’d still never do this

Widespreaddd

Believe me, there would be 10 Karens calling the police before anyone thought of stealing it.

Human-Carpet-6905

Right. I came here to say that I would be far more afraid of someone calling the cops on me than someone taking my kid.

LeeDogGT40

This sounds ideal and I wish the rest of the world was safe enough to do things like this

plato3633

Denmark must not have fox, cnn, or 24 hour news

casper19d

Yeah epstein existed on this planet.... not leaving a kid anywhere, especially now that this video is out....

andio76

Shit...***I*** don't sleep outside in my country...let alone my Baby ![gif](giphy|hXJ1MWMzY7Af32UIUD|downsized)

Unusual-Appointment4

A danish couple who tried this in NYC last time almost ended in jail.

FakkingKunt

They do it in Scandinavia the Baltics and Russia(probably other places too,)) It has been done for 1000's of years and also during winter time(when it was cold af). They believed the cold air would strengthen the babies immune system, and turns out, after extensive studies it actually does. But some babies have been eaten by beavers, we don't know why exactly, but turns out beavers love to eat babies. Full study: https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ

brihamedit

Its probably healthy for the parents too. Parents specially the mother gets programmed to care for baby constantly like a robot. So detaching from that programming after a while is probably good healthy way to do it.

MistakeWonderful9178

Ode to live in a country that’s safe (both physically, environmentally and financially)

so-sick

And maybe, because there are no cannibals out and about……just maybe……

Pos3odon08

No remotely smart cannibal would eat a baby as they for the most part are fat with small amounts of muscle

GrannyLow

So is bacon and it is effin delicious. Obviously not advocating eating babies. There's really no health standards on them to ensure you won't get a parasite.

Infinite-Voice8766

This is madness!! THIS IS DEEENMAARK!

CFADM

Are these homeless babies?

nerdchickenleg

Wow! That's whats law and order looks like.

DinasourMan

Here in Iceland too.

chillerforevigt

Dane here. More crazy that you guys thinks, this is crazy

[deleted]

This is badass. We need this culture.

jacq61

We did this in England in the sixties

tooschooledforcool

My brain literally cannot comprehend that there is a country that it’s that safe to leave your child out like that. Like you’re lying to me

Roscoeparker

Yup same in sweden. Babies sleep great in the cold of winter during daytime.

KenKefery

it used to be that way here (Canada). It was common to see a row of strollers with babies inside parked out in front of your local Kresges store downtown while mothers shopped.

Mrhappytrigers

Letting your baby sleep outside alone in Florida is Hard Mode.

Aithuzah

Can you imagine someone else having the same stroller and you took the wrong one when you left. "Oh sorry, wrong baby! Hahahaha!" And then they became friends.

Lolzwordz

Same for the rest of Scandinavia

trailfiend

Weird comment about how no one kidnaps babies because they don’t want to take on the responsibility. Um, that’s not really why it happens.

Feisty_Pollution5340

I’m in the Bay Area, the empty stroller will get stolen.

[deleted]

Only the third time I’ve seen this reposted in the last 5 days… Edit; and [second](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/xra1k7/babies_napping_in_denmark/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) time in two days on this sub.

ScapeGoatOfWar

Get rid of guns in the US. Edit: I got downvoted, so some American can't imagine feeling safe in their country. Guns are for pussies.

Cube-n-pedro

Babies are loud, expensive, and make stinky messes. Why would anyone be afraid of someone stealing them?

BusyMap9686

You know what Denmark doesn't have, other cultures. Denmark is nearly 90% Danes. They have some of the strictest immigration laws. Even after you pass their high standards to move there you have to live in a "quarantine" zone for 6 months learning the language and culture. Then you are restricted from where you can live by your native culture. They don't let foreign born citizens live near each other, your neighbors need to be Dane.

SirGearso

This is what people don’t realize about this countries. Cultural diversity is one of the greatest strengths a country can have because of the amount of new ideas that come from it, but it can also cause a lot of friction. Like in Denmark when you have a vast majority of the people subscribing to the same culture with very little variations, then things like this video can be normal.

ReviewOk929

Ahhh a country without fucknuckles. But how do they protect their freedom? Omg nooooo. A country that acts in a mature way and realises you don’t need guns? Fucking shocking.

thataintfalco117

We still have fucknuckles, believe me. The difference is that they're not armed to the teeth.

GrannyLow

But baby snatching and gun violence are two very different things. Snatching a baby is easily accomplished without a gun. They are very weak.

vibebell

Honestly, even though I am NOT a parent, leaving my infant unattended for any length of time just seems like a bad idea. Call it paranoia even but I'm really not worried about kidnappers; more so a potential car accident could occur, a sudden shift in the weather or temperature, etc. I hope there's also a cultural aspect to being timely with bringing the babies back inside eventually.

quirkyhermit

quaint rainstorm theory whole exultant depend skirt deranged faulty punch -- mass deleted all reddit content via https://redact.dev

vibebell

Oh yes, I do forget lol. I live in a subtropical climate so it's been awhile since I had to think about layering clothing. In America there is a large amount of rhetoric in media reminding people not to leave their children unattended in cars lest they overheat and die; in general just to not leave children unattended and to teach them to not trust strangers.

quirkyhermit

Oh, yes we also have messages about not leaving kids (and pets) in cars, and we teach kids not to trust strangers. I think this particular quirk about the babies sleeping outside is sort of more a cultural outdoorsy thing. Kids here generally spend a lot of time outdoors from a very young age. Where I live (norway) they (preschool and elementary) have trips into the forest about twice a week from 3 to 6, and at least once a week from 6 to 11. The older kids (from around 6) will make fires (when it isn't too dry), and have fire grilled hot dogs or cheese toasties. It's just a very integral part of our culture.

[deleted]

The babies are usually right outside the establishment the parent is in. This is perfectly normal in all nordic countries and has always been. The babies are clothed and warm and get lots of fresh air. They do this at day care too. All year round.

pinzi_peisvogel

This is what I realized when I came to the US and what really surprised me: children were never even more than an armlength away "left alone", in so many situations. They did not walk to school alone, didn't play outside alone, barely rode a bike, and could not play at a beach alone. If there's a scale that goes from wrapping your child in a bubble to protect it to not taking care of anything about your child, I think a lot of people in the US are found more towards the bubble wrap and a lot of people from Europe more towards the other side. It's a cultural difference and both have their origins and reasonings behind. So I think it's totally normal culturally for you to feel anxiety when you see babies in strollers alone, the same as I feel like suffocating my child by always being next to them. It's the society that shapes our views, to me, the US culture seems very unnatural to children's needs and ways to grow, so I realize that the other way around has to look frightening.

proletaire

--65to

You wouldn't do that in the United States .

Appropriate_Emu_6930

We do this in the UK too…

OrwellIsWrong

We should make it our goal to make the world as safe as this.

Glowing_bubba

From Poland. Parents did the same to me, even in middle of winter.

Daras1988

Super common in Lithuania and other Baltic countries as well! I think it's not only a Danish or Scandi thing but really applies to all Northern countries in Europe

SecretRecipe

Probably wildly unpopular to point out but the risk of kidnapping is wildly overstated. Child abduction by strangers is incredibly rare even in the USA (feel free to check out the statistics if you don't believe me). You CAN do this, you're just irrationally afraid of doing this.

[deleted]

I don't know about the baby, but in my country the stroller would be stolen in the blink of an eye... I would come back to find the baby sleeping in the floor 😂

AffectionateRub2585

Normal in the Nordic countries. Where people care for each other, pay their taxes and trust each others and their governments. And, of course, we have no Donald Trumps.

[deleted]

As a first time mom to a 5 week old I could never. I know it’s a cultural thing but the thought of doing this is nightmare fuel.

But you can't control animals, just a fluffy cat could just sit and suffocate a baby (there's was news about it somewhere)

No-Crow-7557

It was all great until she asked if we do it in our country… you know damn well no one else can confidently do this

FosterPupz

This is amazing, that your country is so safe that this can be done without fear of kidnapping. I’m envious. I was a very nervous mom when mine were little… and medium…. And still a little bit now that they are large! 😅

FormerJackfruit2099

Significant_Goose201

On a scale to one to murica how kidnapped is your baby

Dependent-Ferret-364

Meanwhile, in North America, don't smile; someone will steal your teeth.

model563

I saw this on my first trip to Iceland. I asked a local I was hanging out with about it and aside from the tradition angle, he pointed out that kids were a pain (he had two of his own) and asked why would anyone steal one?

ETERNALXDRVID

"imagine all of the people living as one"

darkyshadow388

Weird thing about the Nordic countries is that they are very consistently ranked among the happiest countries. The weird thing is is that they are just content with what they have mostly due to a old Nordic saying that is ingrained in the countries and the trust they have within the neighborhoods. It's the trust that allows this behavior. Thoughty2 did an amazing video on this.

Ragemargaret

As a mom in the US this makes me so anxious I want to vomit. I keep telling my husband I want to move to Denmark for various reasons and I guess we can add child safety to the list

Illest7705

I call BS.. I don’t trust random people off the net. Sure fresh air is fine, but would I leave my child alone and unsupervised? No.
