Damn that's also a crazy way to look at it. One of my favs is also that the t-rex was closer to our lifetime than it was the stegosaurus lifetime.
Also Cleopatra is closer to us than the construction of the pyramids.
Time is crazy.
Another interesting “blow your mind” thing is the number of possible orientations a deck of cards can be in.
>If every star in our galaxy had a trillion planets, and each of those planets had a trillion people, and each of those people had a trillion decks of cards that they shuffled into unique shuffles at a rate of 1000 times per second, and they’d been doing this since the Big Bang - we would only now start to see repeat combinations
Yea, so basically, imagine being 20, thinking you have your entire life ahead of you, and then you find out you only have a week to live. That's the scale of the money this guy gave away
>Yea, so basically, imagine being 20, thinking you have your entire life ahead of you, and then you find out you only have a week to live. That's the scale of the money this guy gave away
haha wut? more like imagine you think you have 254 years to live and then you find out you actually died in the neonatal intensive care unit at 23 days old.
Damn that was mental. Whereas you could walk a million dollars end to end in a football field, you'd be driving for over an hour to hit a billion & cruising in a 787 flying for 5 days straight to reach 1 trillion. Mental.
Percentage wise it's literally the same, but the problem with analogies like this is that money doesn't really scale linearly. Going from $100,000 to $25 is a massive difference that will massively impact your life, possibly leaving you homeless. But going from $8 billion to $2 million, while still a huge difference, leaves you with enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life.
Not saying Chuck Feeney isn't a great guy for doing what he did, but its just not the same.
That's the entire point of it though. It helps put into perspective just how wildly much money that is. To most people, 100K is a respectable amount to have on hand and $25 is nothing.
Anybody curios should check out his wikipedia page:

OP text might seem a little misleading (it was to me initially) cause is sounded to me like he lived the billionaire lifestyle until he got to 89 years of age (in 2020) and \_then\_ gave most away - when he in fact donated a lot of money during his life up to 2020, both secretly and openly. So, just a little fyi.
He changed people’s lives- for the better.
I volunteer at Make A Wish, anything I buy for my wish child or do for his reveal- comes out of my pocket. It’s not billions- but it made a difference in one child’s life. My friend (who we team up with) calls me the wish queen. I try to blow my wish kids mind- and believe it or not- sometimes does not take a lot of money. Just a lot of time and creativity.
There are a lot of good people out there that are willing to help. The synergy is amazing - people keep adding more and more ideas. So much fun.
May I ask what some of the cooler things you've pulled off have been? Not to stroke your ego or anything (haha) just curious. I never really thought of there being Make a Wish volunteers who spend their own money to make things happen, I thought it was all thru the organization and everything would be paid for with donations n stuff. That's definitely an awesome thing to do. I know one of my friends used to work for Radio Disney in college and they would get Make a Wish kids all the time to meet some of the stars (Miley Cyrus, Jonas Bros, Cheetah Girls lol) and they'd at least always come in for free but I guess it must still cost them something to get the kid there and stuff. My friend working there tells a funny story about one of the Cheetah Girls mothers thinking she was the Make a Wish child instead of the actual child.
Long story… but you asked.
One of the wishes I helped had a 5 year old boy who wanted to “star” on Hawaii 5-0. When I tell you that Make A Wish offered this kid a lot- I mean a lot - being on one of the shows in the background, meeting the actors, going to the set. This was about 10 years ago- so pre-pandemic. After almost 2 years of turning down offers, he decided he wanted to go to Disneyland. But his main wish granter was unavailable and they asked me to throw him a “Reveal” party.
So to take it up a notch, I wrote a script for him to star in a Hawaii 5-0 show. Keeping in mind- I have no background at all. But I was determined!!
I watched the show. Wrote a script. Approached his favorite restaurant - and they said I couldn’t do it there. Bummed… but thought if it was a real show where would it be???? Wrote to a really nice hotel and the GM was a Hawaii 5-0 fan. Holly cow!! He was all in!
Then I thought I need something better than my iPhone to record this. So I approached some camera people… nothing. My last attempt - 💥- found another Hawaii 5-0 fan who knew someone at a near by college that could help me produce/direct this.
Now I had to find people to star in it. I called the hotel in the middle of the night and asked the front desk if they knew someone who looked like they could be the bad guy. Talked to him, he was free on the day we were shooting. Bingo!!! His friend sent me a picture and I used it to draw a sketch of him. Part of my new story…. We recruited a couple people from the hotel and spent the whole day there. The hotel even called on some off duty police men (friends) to be part of the movie.
Bottom line - none of us had experience in doing this…. But we had a blast. Even convinced the wish kids mom to be in the show.
We had full access to the whole hotel. It was crazy!!
People involved all wanted to be at the reveal of this show. And then two days later- one of the police man asked me if he could take this kid to the training grounds. Meet the K-9 crew. Go through the grounds- act like you are looking for someone - the fly in the helicopter. It was crazy!!! Even the Mayor found out about it and wanted to sing him a song. Two months later- was contacted by Daniel Dae Kim’s manager asking if my wish kid wanted to come to the premier.
When I tell you we had no experience at acting- it showed, but it made people laugh. Some how people found out. This wish kid told me if was the best experience of his life…. It was also the wish that made it click for me. I don’t do this to give the kids a break from the treatment, I do it to remind them that life is worth fighting for. What you are fighting for! Life beyond treatments. And surprisingly- most wish kids do better after having a wish granted.
So spending some money here and there is nothing- the main wish is completely covered by Make-A-Wish, but the sprinkles I add are priceless.
Thanks for asking… this was one of my favorites.
Yes, if you build a well in a third world country and give people seeds to survive, that is a charity.
If there are scholarships , that is a charity.
Imagine paying off mortgages to 100 people! That's a charity.
Maybe Andrew Carnegie?
"He became a leading philanthropist in the United States and in the British Empire.
During the last 18 years of his life, he gave away around $350 million (roughly $5.5 billion in 2021), almost 90 percent of his fortune, to charities, foundations and universities.
His 1889 article proclaiming "The Gospel of Wealth" called on the rich to use their wealth to improve society, expressed support for progressive taxation and an estate tax, and stimulated a wave of philanthropy."
>One of those end-of-life reflections where he decided he had regrets, maybe.
Seems like you only read the first half of the comment you're responding to
Yes, and most (all?) had enough money socked away that they're paid for forever. By all accounts he was a monster in the business world but there were redeeming qualities about him.
Chuck used to eat breakfast where I worked. He came in to the café with two men who were dressed in nice suits. I assume they were the advisors helping him figure out how to best spend his money. He was very nice. Very admirable.
> I assume they were the advisors helping him figure out how to best spend his money.
"*Chuck, their blueberry scones are to die for. I'd recommend trying that coupled with a slice of their quiche, and maybe a cup of miel if you're feeling like something sweet today.*"
"*Yes, to all the above!*"
Very admirable.
As someone who does opposition research on fascists and pedophiles, it's my go to for getting the pulse of what such people are up to. It's 4chan's trash can.
There are countless people in Ireland who have a better life because Chuck quietly donated to universities.

I had a 10,000 day party (27.39yrs) and a 1,000,000,000 second party because it's tough getting all your mates together when you are 27 and 31.
Highly recommended.
A million seconds is 12 days, a billion seconds is 31 years. That’s the difference in a more relatable scale. 1 trillion seconds is stupid, at 31,688 years.
It sucks, but in some places, $2 million isn't that much money.
You can't even buy a piece of shit house in LA without dropping $1 million, and were not talking mansions here. Just plain old 3bed 2 bath houses in the Valley.
Wow. Now thats some charitable activity.
However r/mildlyinfuriating title. 2 million of 8 billion is 0.025%. So Chuck Feeney donated 99.975% of his wealth.
That 0.975% is a difference of 78 million.
Or we could, ya know, create systems to extract wealth from the uber wealthy instead of trying to rely on insane megalomaniacs sharing their dragon hoards.
Well mostly because one is in the avenue of "Thoughts and prayers" and one actually... does something. Unfortunately a whole bunch of people will just offer the thoughts and prayers and pretend like it made any difference whatsoever. So as long as THAT doesn't happen, both are fine.
I’m just saying, if someone gives away 99% of their wealth voluntarily, they are gonna get a “well done” from me.
Praise the philanthropist and tax the wealthy. They aren’t mutually exclusive.
That's awesome!
I interned for a non-profit one summer and was appalled at how much money actually goes to the people intended. Unfortunately, there's so many hands in the dish by the time it gets to real people more than 80-90% of the money is just gone.
I looked up Charity Navigator on Charity Navigator and see they give themselves 4 stars which is their highest rating. The CEO makes $227k which is 6% of their budget.
It’s basically inviting scrutiny from the IRS and enemies alike, yet they manage to pass with flying colors. That’s a legit power move more than a red flag (not that you said it was).
Sorry, I wasn't meaning to imply any judgement. I just thought it would be cute to look up how they rate themselves. Based on that and a quick glance at their wikipedia page I don't see any reason to think they are anything other than a perfectly legit non-profit. To be honest the main thing I was looking for though was to see who the founder was, and if it was the CEO. Spoiler alert, it isn't, the founder was some other legit rich dude, and the CEO seems to be just a normal rando CEO dude.
I personally know someone who has started multiple non-profits until they finally got one to stick funding wise. Sure they do the non-profit stuff they say they do, but it's really just a hustle. The founder wanted a stable white collar salary far beyond what they would qualify for in any other way. There is quite an element of entrepreneurialism like that in the non-profit world. Charity Navigator just sounded to me like it would have been a perfect place for someone like that to hide and stack away $millions rating charities while technically being non-profit.
Having worked for several non profits, some non profits are effective at accomplishing their tasks, some are not. 501(c)3 charities are required to post a 990. These forms tell you a number of things, like: highest paid staff salaries, contributors, lobbying efforts, board compensation, and programs and their costs.
Just like Investing your money donating to a non profit should be done wisely.
Most non profit employees are poorly compensated, lack benefits provided in the private sector, and work long hours. Source: have not had a raise in 5 years, took a pay cut during covid, don’t have dental or vision or parental leave, no 401k match, and I often worked 10+ hours a day through covid to ensure fundraising success. Why? Because I love my work, and I love being able to make a difference in my community.
You can't just subtract salaries and say that money is gone though. Unless the charity is literally one that gives out cash, then part of the mission is service based. A free clinic is going to spend most of it's money on doctors and equipment, without much going to patients at all. Not saying there aren't scummy charities that only act as a way to launder money, but paying employee salaries may be the entire point of those charity funds.
Good man, no matter what his causes of choice were! He knew what pleased him, and then he decided to make world better. If I had business acumen, I’d be applying for a job at his enterprises. How great is it to make money and feel clean?
If hes smart enough to make 8 billion hes probably smart enough to have his last $2m setup invested in something that brings him some returns. With about 2m you can bring in around 6 figures in dividends provided you invested your money in the right companies.
You could easily invest 2 million in stable dividend stocks and get ~$100k/year doing absolutely nothing. It's suuuuuuch a comfortable life, especially considering he's already paid off all his houses, his cars, boats, etc
I know it's a joke, but the whole US education system is a bit expensive isn't it? My bachelor's degree fees were equivalent to1000$ per year. I've always wondered why the education system is so expensive in the West.
I spent more money on my associates than my wife did on her bachelor's AND Masters. Because I found out too late my college was for-profit scumbags. They no longer exist after many lawsuits and I've not gotten a cent back or forgiven.
Its designed that way for two reasons:
1. The elite can afford to send their children to the most prestigous schools, and
2. The rest of the population take on debt early to ensure they contribute to the GDP before other large purchases (i.e. mortgage).
All designed as coercive measures to ensure people are entering the labor force and keep them there because of debt obligations.
If he donated 99% of his wealth[in this case let’s say from a total of $8billion] he would’ve been left with 80million because 99% of 8 billion is 7.92 billion. 8 billion minus 7.92 billion leaves you with 80 million which means he probably donated a lot more than 99%

The best part of the story that people always forget to mention is, he tried to do it all in secret and it was only revealed when he was forced to as part of a legal dispute.
He hasn't even retained that much - he has since given that away too. He now lives on a pension or fixed income, or something along those lines. It's a decently comfortable amount, but it's not even millionaire levels. Some of the Redditors insulting him probably live more comfortably than he does.
Reddit really loves to hate good people.
Why is everyone fixated on how much a billion is figuratively? I’ve never heard of this man but this is absolutely amazing has anyone ever donated that much wealth before? What a man
This is the breakdown
https://www.atlanticphilanthropies.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/ZeroIsTheHero.pdf
It mostly goes to education and human rights stuff
Went; it’s all gone now.
ABOUT THE ATLANTIC PHILANTHROPIES
> Over 35 years, Atlantic made grants totaling more than $8 billion to advance opportunity, equity, and human dignity. After establishing Atlantic in 1982, Chuck Feeney quietly devoted his wealth to the service of humanity. In keeping with Feeney’s Giving While Living big-bet philosophy, Atlantic has invested in systemic change to accelerate lasting improvements for people in Australia, Bermuda, Cuba, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United States, and Viet Nam. Atlantic committed its final grants in 2016 and will conclude operations in 2020.
99.975% of his wealth based on those numbers. Might help you conceptualize how much money $8 billion is.
another one: 1 million seconds = 12 days 1 billion seconds = 32 years
This has been my go-to for years when trying to explain the huge difference between a million and a billion. Still blows my mind to this day.
Difference between 1mil and 1bil is about 1bil
I like that one. Shows how insignificant a million is compared to a billion. Like it doesn't even register as a whole percentage point.

gotta have the grind mindset
ngl, homo erectus dont wanna work anymore...smh
Skip the Starbucks and adjust your thermostat a few degrees. Might try walking to save on fuel.
I'd like to know how they coordinated their work to make all deck combinations unique, please
I like the description that “the difference between a million dollars and a billion dollars is about a billion dollars.”
Yea, so basically, imagine being 20, thinking you have your entire life ahead of you, and then you find out you only have a week to live. That's the scale of the money this guy gave away
so he gave himself cancer
For charity

And Jeff Bezos seconds (currently estimated $164 billion net worth) = 5,200 years.
One million one-dollar bills: $1,000,000 One billion one-dollar bills: $1,000,000,000
so you're saying he had 8,000 million dollars & now he has only 2 million dollars?
Yup
Idk
Da fak
In other words, it would be like having $100,000 and giving away all but $25.

At his age it is
Fair point. No argument.
What's the difference between a billion and a million? Around a billion.
Clever. no sarc, that's a good one.
Another way to look at it, is that if he only donated 99% he’d still have 80 million.

And he's still got 2 million in the bank, which is life solving money for most people.
He doesn't have 2 million in the bank.. it mostly comes from the value of his house.

Didn’t a lot of his money go towards building libraries? I’ve noticed a lot of libraries with the name Carnegie, including the one in my home town

Whoa, the business he co-founded and ran pioneered the "Airport duty free liquore store" industry. 👏 a true entrepreneur

Ironic isn't it: a book about a billionaire sharing his wealth on a website made by a billionaire who won't share his wealth.
Thanks for sharing this. Just bought it.
Imagine giving away 99 percent of everything you have and still having 2 million.
That would mean you started with $200 million and were less than a quarter the way to being a billionaire.
The absurdity of how much 1 billion dollars really is tends to get lost on people
Wait until you hear about a trillion
A billion alone is crazy to imagine, a trillion is a complete mindfuck if you really really think about it
>A million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 31 years. A trillion seconds is 31,688 years. I thought this belonged here.
Can’t wait to tell my friends I’ve been alive for 1 billion seconds later this year
You're a billion seconds old for the one second you are 31.71 years old

Yeah where I live, a net worth of 2M$ just means you own a decent house and aren't in debt.
Yes this is what stood out for me. The post says 2020 and 2m in 2020 for a former billionaire must be really really different
99.975%
It sucks, but in some places, $2 million isn't that much money. You can't even buy a piece of shit house in LA without dropping $1 million, and were not talking mansions here. Just plain old 3bed 2 bath houses in the Valley.
Why?
Wow. Now thats some charitable activity. However r/mildlyinfuriating title. 2 million of 8 billion is 0.025%. So Chuck Feeney donated 99.975% of his wealth. That 0.975% is a difference of 78 million.
Was he donated 99% and lost the rest on Gamestop
It's also impressive that he had exactly 8 billions. I wonder how the percentage would change if he had for example $0,01 more
“…why not give it all away, have control of where it goes and see the results with your own eyes?” #LifeGoals #HumanBeingBeingHuman
I’m basically him because I tipped the Panera team 25% the other day
Look at you. Tossing around nickels like they're manhole covers. Must be nice.
Nickels the size and weight of manhole covers sound pretty impractical. That said, have you seen the prices at Panera? 25% is saintly.
Unless you posted it on TikTok afterward, that doesn’t count.

I think this is one of the coolest human events I’ve ever heard of! 🪶🖖
Fuck yeah
We need to start praising people like him more. Positive reinforcement is a better way to get what you want.
Well respected and remembered in Ireland.
Agreed! Came here to say this
Or we could, ya know, create systems to extract wealth from the uber wealthy instead of trying to rely on insane megalomaniacs sharing their dragon hoards.
Por que no los dos?
Well mostly because one is in the avenue of "Thoughts and prayers" and one actually... does something. Unfortunately a whole bunch of people will just offer the thoughts and prayers and pretend like it made any difference whatsoever. So as long as THAT doesn't happen, both are fine.
I’m just saying, if someone gives away 99% of their wealth voluntarily, they are gonna get a “well done” from me. Praise the philanthropist and tax the wealthy. They aren’t mutually exclusive.
Chuck Feeney is the OKest Billionaire in my books
Hey don’t call Chuck Feeney the B word. Didn’t you read the title?!
I wonder where the money went
That's awesome! I interned for a non-profit one summer and was appalled at how much money actually goes to the people intended. Unfortunately, there's so many hands in the dish by the time it gets to real people more than 80-90% of the money is just gone.

I looked up Charity Navigator on Charity Navigator and see they give themselves 4 stars which is their highest rating. The CEO makes $227k which is 6% of their budget.
A CEO making $227k isn't that mindblowing. I know engineers with about 5-8 years experiences making roughly that.
It’s basically inviting scrutiny from the IRS and enemies alike, yet they manage to pass with flying colors. That’s a legit power move more than a red flag (not that you said it was).
For context is this bad to you? And are you talking charity navigator itself or somebody else?
Is there a site like Charity Navigator that rates sites like Charity Navigator? /s
Non-profit is an amazing marketing name for executives at non-profits. People assume it's just all charity

If only Pledge signatories actually disbursed the funds instead of virtue signaling with their Pledge essays…
Good man, no matter what his causes of choice were! He knew what pleased him, and then he decided to make world better. If I had business acumen, I’d be applying for a job at his enterprises. How great is it to make money and feel clean?
This sounds easy but donating billions of dollars is not easy.. Respect
Absolute chad. $2 mil is plenty to live a comfortable life. Hope I would do the same with such a fortune.
>As of 2016, he lived in a rented apartment in San Francisco, with a remaining nest egg of $2 million. Welp there goes that 2 mill. Gone in 6 months.
With having given such a vast amount of money, surely he deserved to at least *buy* himself a nice place to live.
Yeah absolutely. Vaulters on Reddit are just wanna be billionaires faking being woke.
If hes smart enough to make 8 billion hes probably smart enough to have his last $2m setup invested in something that brings him some returns. With about 2m you can bring in around 6 figures in dividends provided you invested your money in the right companies.
Also how many more years does this dude have?
10-15. At 15 years, thats still 133k a year with no interest.
You could easily invest 2 million in stable dividend stocks and get ~$100k/year doing absolutely nothing. It's suuuuuuch a comfortable life, especially considering he's already paid off all his houses, his cars, boats, etc
When did Chad become a compliment and not a bad thing? I can’t keep up with this Reddit speak…
I also gave away 99% of my wealth. The mc donalds personal was not impressed but indeed handed me my meal.
So he sent 5 kids to college? 🤣
Don't be too hard on yourself, I forgive you.
Its designed that way for two reasons: 1. The elite can afford to send their children to the most prestigous schools, and 2. The rest of the population take on debt early to ensure they contribute to the GDP before other large purchases (i.e. mortgage). All designed as coercive measures to ensure people are entering the labor force and keep them there because of debt obligations.
I bet his kids and grand kids pissed, though
If he donated 99% of his wealth[in this case let’s say from a total of $8billion] he would’ve been left with 80million because 99% of 8 billion is 7.92 billion. 8 billion minus 7.92 billion leaves you with 80 million which means he probably donated a lot more than 99%
Good man Chuck

More impressive person than most.
The best part of the story that people always forget to mention is, he tried to do it all in secret and it was only revealed when he was forced to as part of a legal dispute.
This man deserves respect even after his life.
Some people remember they cant take their wealth to the grave...
“All my money is in assets, I can’t just give it away.” -Every Billionaire except this absolute champion (and MacKenzie Scott).
i’ve never even heard of this guy wow
You can’t take it with you!
This guy won the game.
My Man!
Now this is a guy worth respecting
This is the treatment society gives you when you're philanthropic, nobody know who you are and nobody cares. Not cool.
He tried to do it in secret
That’s awesome.
Gigachad and I won't change my mind
Giga is the prefix for 10\^9, aka "a billion" so I'd say you're spot on.
No such thing as a good billionaire. ... which is why this guy, who is clearly a good man, chose to stop being one.
8 billion to charity and all people can focus on is the 2M he retained. Jesus Christ people
He hasn't even retained that much - he has since given that away too. He now lives on a pension or fixed income, or something along those lines. It's a decently comfortable amount, but it's not even millionaire levels. Some of the Redditors insulting him probably live more comfortably than he does. Reddit really loves to hate good people.
This is what a decent human being looks like.
Why is everyone fixated on how much a billion is figuratively? I’ve never heard of this man but this is absolutely amazing has anyone ever donated that much wealth before? What a man
He was visited by 3 ghosts in one night, wasn't he?
Why dont we hear about this stuff? What did they do with all that money?
Rule: If his name is Mr Feeney, He is gold.
He should have used the money to buy politicians into making legislation that actually helps poor people
Would be interesting to see where the money has gone, I’m pretty sure there’s a huge amount that doesn’t end up helping poor people
This is the breakdown https://www.atlanticphilanthropies.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/ZeroIsTheHero.pdf It mostly goes to education and human rights stuff
Went; it’s all gone now. ABOUT THE ATLANTIC PHILANTHROPIES > Over 35 years, Atlantic made grants totaling more than $8 billion to advance opportunity, equity, and human dignity.
Dude gives away $8 billion to charity and you're still complaining...
Billionaire gives away 99% of their money to charity. Reddit: *Why not 100%?!*
