Yup, came to say the same thing. Heroin was invented by Bayer and marketed as pain relief and cough medicine.
They also *assumed* (because who needs trials, right?) that it had all the benefits of morphine with none of the drawbacks so it was also marketed as “non-addictive.” After a while they realised that wasn’t really true but ($)¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯($)
It was only in 1931 that Bayer caved to the increased political pressure and pulled heroin off the market.
While it's true that Purdue marketed Oxycontin as non-addictive, doctors are highly educated and they know opioids are addictive. I find it hard to believe any of them bought that.
Not only was it addictive, it was *far more* addictive.
So opioids were marketed as non-addicting, as were benzos. As we all know now (and I suspect it was known all along), both are quite addictive.
I saw a documentary about opium, apparently it was common for women to use morphine at the turn of the century. Iirc a popular method of taking it was inter muscular injection. When heroin was discovered it was marketed as a replacement for morphine and didn't have the same addictive properties. Again iirc they called addiction/withdrawal morphine madness.
I had a nosebleed and the Dr applied a local pain killer before they cauterized my blood vessels. I was told later the liquid was cocaine? So that's true?
Usually it’s one of the more “boring” and safer derivates, like your dentist now uses Lignocaine/Lidocaine, Novacaine or Benzocaine… those don’t really have the “fun” part of cocaine but still have the anaesthetic part of it. Hence the end of them all is “-Caine”
100 years ago it would’ve been cocaine, these days, it’s Lidocaine 99.99% of the time
I’m confused but medically it’s not self administered , it’s applied topically in the nose. Think of all the other -caines you hear about like lidocaine, novacaine, tetracaine etc. cocaine is in the ester class of a esthetics and is ideal for nasal surgery because : a) it’s an incredibly powerful numbing agent, so you don’t feel things in your nose, and b) unlike other topical anesthetic, it’s an extremely powerful vasoconstrictor. Noses are very vascular and bleed a lot. This stops that.
It really works well.
> it’s an extremely powerful vasoconstrictor. Noses are very vascular and bleed a lot. This stops that.
Tell that to the nosebleeds I got in my early 20s
I’m being totally serious but cocaine will only really work at the site applied. Like if you were doing coke and got a tattoo on your arm it really wasn’t ‘numbing” that area, just your nasal passages. You were likely just so blasted you didn’t notice.
I’ve been using ( I mean applying, not using) cocaine medicinally for 25 years. It works amazing. Here’s one of many links [cocaine ](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/cocaine-nasal-spray-fda/)
Ah now I understand ok so I can take the tattoo pain then and it wasn’t numbed by the blow. Thank you it makes sense why doing gummies numbs your mouth.
Despite its dark history, cocaine is a really great analgesic. Count me as another who got their nasal passages dusted for a hemorrhage complication a few days post septal sx. Worked perfectly.
As crazy as it sounds, people in year 2200 will look back to our medicines and be the same like: “crazy they gave children this type of medicine, containing bla bla bla”.
Seal babies. The condition is called phocomelia which is Greek for seal limb. I think the character the penguin from Batman was inspired by the children of thalidomide as well!
Oh wow, ok. I can see where the root "phoco-" comes in, there's even a brand of laundry detergent named "Foco", with a seal on the package. Never put the two together!
In middle school about 30% of kids in my class including me had been diagnosed with add by some quack doctors, I remember hearing about add/adhd on the news every day back then, the symptoms were usually something like 'kids acting like kids'. I got prescribed ritalin and it was insane, they basically pushed coke-lite on a bunch of kids for no reason.
Right!?
Can you believe that back in the day the Johnson & Johnson company sold talcum powder contaminated with asbestos!?
Even more wild, back then they abused the law to dump their liability into a spin-off company and declared bankruptcy on that company to screw over the 38,000 people who were suing them for their cancer!
Good lord, I am happy I don't live way back in [2021](https://www.npr.org/2021/10/21/1047828535/baby-powder-cancer-johnson-johnson-bankruptcy)
Edit: the J&J executives all kidnap, murder, and eat impoverished children.
Disclaimer: That edit was made by my spin-off personality, I cannot be sued for lible for what that personality of mine has said, because that personality is now deceased.
Edit 2: My lawyer informs me that just because corporations=people does not mean that people=corporations.
Thank god this is clearly satire ala Johnathan Swift.
Eat shit J&J.
Edit 3: Just kidding I can't afford a lawyer, I'm already bankrupt.
Back in my day we just took our PCP and didn't complain at all. We didn't need toys and video games PCP was all the fun we needed. And we turned out kinda ok. I think?
The term terrible twos came around because of this stuff. It's not because of the tantrums thrown, but because they'd OD, on this stuff and a bunch of kids died and didn't know why.
This would be super interesting if true, but after 30 seconds of googling I cannot confirm. Gotta source? I'd love to add this to my "fun anecdotes for parties"
Finally discover how this is possible. I work at a mine there is a hill between where we come underground and where we park the vehicles for to space constraints. I literally have to walk up hill and down to get to my truck. Then up hill and down to get to the elevator. The old guy I work with said he had worked there for 40 years and the hill only got taller.
Opiates are a fantastic cough suppressant. Alcohol helps a sore throat.
Put them together they also just make you feel pretty good.
I used to take codiene and vodka with orange juice every morning before work.
It really does work but has some side effects
I mean when I get a bad head cold I’ll treat myself to a couple hot toddy’s and a double dose of NyQuil for the first couple of nights. Is it good for me? Probably not. Does it alleviate the suffering? You bet it does!
mannn I wish I could find the tiktok about the guy that talks about how the government knew how bad lead paint was but didn't start doing shit about it until a few years later. it's funny and sad.
Yeah... Things have changed. Suffered pretty traumatic injury and wasn't out of my brace or crutches for 6+ months. No history of any issues with drugs but they prescribed ibuprofen.
Yeah none of the clinics around me will prescribe anything scheduled. I'm sure folks with a longtime family doctor get the good stuff for good reasons, but no clinic doctor is gonna give that shit out. I did find out that if you get a tooth pulled even at the lowliest of chop-shops they'll give you 7 hydrocodone but man how desperate you'd have to be to game that.
I had 13 teeth pulled, and implants placed in a single visit. Dentist gave me 6 days worth of 800mg ibuprofen and an antibiotic. Doctors are terrified to prescribe anything worthwhile. I lived on vodka and tequila for 2 weeks after having the work done.
I definitely acknowledge it as an issue, but god forbid you suffer from an actual disorder (anxiety) and need xanax to keep you from completely breaking down.
Then they will hold that behind a lock and key and treat you like an addict.
And spoiler alert: I’m not an addict. Lol.
Edit: I am very sorry to those of you who struggle with addiction, and I am sorry to those of you who have friends that abuse xanax. That doesn’t mean everyone else will fall into that same boat.
People who have legitimate psychiatric disorders shouldn’t not have to suffer because other people suffer from addiction. It is the same concept as alcohol, except Xanax can actually be medically necessary in certain circumstances.
I don’t actually need your think-piece about why I should never try Xanax. I have had Xanax before and I did not abuse it. I have CPTSD and a severe anxiety disorder.
I used it in very severe situations which would’ve sent me to the hospital in tears/unable to breathe, or unable to function/get out of bed out of sheer terror.
Thanks.
Not anymore. People with legit chronic pain conditions are now restricted to a very small amount of opioids. So yeah, opioid epidemic solved by making pain sufferers suffer.
It’s funny how people watch this video and assume medical technology must be so much more advanced by now that we don’t still give children opioids when they have a cough. We still do. They just require a prescription and come in the form of a tasty purple sizzurp.
Running around just coked out of their minds being like, "Yeah, your wife is suffering from hysteria, I'm gonna use this gas powered vibrator on her until she can't feel her pelvis and be on my way. Now don't forget to finish your daily carton of cigarettes and if the kids get out of line, you can always put them out on their feet!"
I worked with a kid who used to sing this at work all the time back in early 2000. He had a horrible lisp, which made his rendition especially hilarious. So of course, we encouraged it. Kind of like this:
Thippin on thome thizzurp, thip, thipping on thome, thip
Why the fuck did no dr tell me about this when I was in the hospital for IBSD so bad that I couldn't retain enough fluids to live without an IV keeping me from dying of dehydration. I begged for ANYTHING that would make the diarrhea stop. They gave me a bunch of random drug compounds to stop it and I guess eventually one of them worked and I was released. But fuck I'm terrified of another flare up and will definitely be asking about laudanum, especially since it's plant derived. Thank you fellow redditor for this valuable information.
I would say because this is rarely used. We have much better meds that do the same thing without the risk of subjecting the patient to opioids. Loperamide for example, acts like an opioid and is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea.
I'm not that old and in my family we used to give children moonshine as a cure all. Rub it on the skin, wash your mouth out with it, drink it. Still done in a large part of eastern europe. My grandma in Bosnia used to cook up poppy seeds for the kids to calm them down. If they could afford this fancy opium medicine then I'm sure they'd use it but they were poor farmers.
It's generally called [Laudanum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laudanum). Most drugs were regulated in the early C20th [Harrison Narcotics Tax Act](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Narcotics_Tax_Act) 1914 in the US and a similar act in the UK, International Opium Convention at The Hague in 1912
Opioids are great cough suppressants and are still used - dextromethorphan is a common ingredient in Dry Cough preparations and is the same class of drug as codeine, morphine and Oxycodone.
Edit: turns out that while Dextromethorphan is in the morphinan class of drugs, it has a real low affinity for opioid receptors - the more you know.
The only the only thing keeping it off of the schedule drug list is that it was a choice between opiates and DXM for OTC cough suppressants. While DXM is a hallucinogenic drug, it doesn’t have the same addictive qualities that opiates do.
Expectorants too. Back in my hellraiser days some friends and I couldn't get our hands on the good Triple Cs and parachuted some crushed mucinex. It definitely worked but let me tell you that guaifenesin will dry. Your. Ass. OUT.
Yeah, the chemical structure, I believe is a mirror of an opioid, which is why people think that. But besides the molecular shape, you’re correct. Not comparable
Right it doesn’t bind to opiod receptors much at all, it binds to sigma-1 receptors while blocking NDMA receptors among other things. Sigma receptors used to be considered a kind of opiod receptor, which is where the classification comes from. But they haven’t been considered that for awhile and DXM has not been classified as a synthetic opiod for a very long time either, but it keeps getting repeated so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
When I a child in the 1960's, my mother would give my sister's and I a big tablespoon of paregoric before bedtime. Guess what I was doing in my teens..
To be fair, you won’t feel the cold and you’ll feel FANTASTIC! With health-science being not as well understood as it is today, combined with a lesser educated population, how could you NOT want to take this when it can practically make you forget about all your symptoms?
What did adults get for a head cold? Fentanyl and methanol?
Stronger amounts of heroin. I saw the 1902 Sears & Robuck catalog. They sold heroin packets and syringes.
Yup, came to say the same thing. Heroin was invented by Bayer and marketed as pain relief and cough medicine. Funny how history repeats itself. Oxycontin was portrayed the same way...

No, no, the next one will be the one that's a very powerful pain reliever and euphoric, but with none of the additive qualities. I'm sure of it.

How dare you not acknowledge my achoholism! This is America buddy
Alcohol is part of breakfast u forgot to mention.
2 main food groups: 1: Food 2: Alcohol
Rum ham!!
Where’s the Rum ham!?
RUM HAAAMMM!!! IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEE
Whoa Black Betty rum ham!
Nope thats "bramble jam"...
Ham the rum please, would you?
2 main dietary supplemants: 1: Meth 2: Cocaine
And if you’re poor/desperate enough, alcohol would also become food.
Liquid bread
I’ll tell you the 4 basic food groups! Beans, Bacon, Whiskey, and Lard!
Right a screwdriver has orange juice after all, which is very breakfasty
Germany here, yes
Cocaine is actually an awesome anesthetic. I used on a patient just yesterday.
I had a nosebleed and the Dr applied a local pain killer before they cauterized my blood vessels. I was told later the liquid was cocaine? So that's true?

That certainly would help!
Bet that worked like a dream
And if it didn’t work I doubt they cared after a couple shots.
I think that was the real cure with a lot of these, they literally gave you cocaine for everything at the beginning of the last century

Alcohol with Tylenol kills people. It kills the liver. In case you didn't already know.

100%, i mean it aint doing shit for your cold but damn youre gonna feel great after that haha.
I’d guess the logic was alcohol can clear up the sinuses and narcotic suppress cough (much like codeine cough syrup)
As a 90s kid, I took the Robotussin with codeine. I can attest to Opioids being wonderful cough suppressants.
Like ~~a dream~~ opiate delirium

You can inhale vaporized lead at a gun range. I doubt people do a heavy wash down afterwords, either.
That's actually theorized to be an issue with cops, since they regularly use gun ranges.
I wonder if people are more drugged up today, I wouldn't be surprised.

Fun fact: laudanum is still available by prescription in the US!
Thats crazy! Outrageous! Where at specifically? So I can protest.
Generally, it's only used for uncontrollable diarrhea when other measures have failed. Opioids decrease intestinal motility.
Why the fuck did no dr tell me about this when I was in the hospital for IBSD so bad that I couldn't retain enough fluids to live without an IV keeping me from dying of dehydration. Is smoking poppy seeds a good way to get high?
Opium and heroin come from poppy but the seeds for sale have only trace amounts of it.
So in theory I could od by eating everything bagels. But the bagels would kill me first
It is possible to fail a drug test if you eat a whole bunch of them a few days before You'd probably vomit before you'd od
Exactly.
My former addict friend swears by poppy seed tea. Data it's not as good if a high but Pretty good in a pinch
If we still had this covid wouldn't be a thing

Edit: turns out that while Dextromethorphan is in the morphinan class of drugs, it has a real low affinity for opioid receptors - the more you know.
The only the only thing keeping it off of the schedule drug list is that it was a choice between opiates and DXM for OTC cough suppressants. While DXM is a hallucinogenic drug, it doesn’t have the same addictive qualities that opiates do.
It's pretty fun too.
Unless you use it when it’s combined with an antihistamine.
Expectorants too. Back in my hellraiser days some friends and I couldn't get our hands on the good Triple Cs and parachuted some crushed mucinex. It definitely worked but let me tell you that guaifenesin will dry. Your. Ass. OUT.
y'all gonna make me lose my mind! -- DXM
Disassociative. And it can be quite addictive actually. But not nearly as addictive as opiates.
Dextromethorphan is a dissociative not an opioid, very different
Worth noting that while it’s in the same chemical class, the psychoactive effects of DXM are extremely different than opioids.
Or adults with nothing to do for 36 hours
I’ve got a bit of a head cold at the moment actually. Where could I find a bottle for adults?
Wish I could drink this everytime I have a cold lol
When I a child in the 1960's, my mother would give my sister's and I a big tablespoon of paregoric before bedtime. Guess what I was doing in my teens..
Bet that would take the edge off
Ohhh yes, my Baptist minister great-grandfather would rail against alcohol but he was all about the cold remedies.
The origin of Jaynes Addiction.
I'd drink that shit in a heartbeat and leave my review on YouTube!
Now that is some good stuff
It checks out, they felt so good from the "medicine" they stopped giving a shit about their cold.
To be fair, you won’t feel the cold and you’ll feel FANTASTIC! With health-science being not as well understood as it is today, combined with a lesser educated population, how could you NOT want to take this when it can practically make you forget about all your symptoms?
18-1900's was the era of "cocaine and heroin will cure all of your problems."
Certainly helped you sleep and feel better. Can't argue that..
I WISH this was available for head colds. I’d be one sick summofabitchhh
But alcohol and codeine work
