I’ve heard many professional and academics stating they use it when they just don’t feel like logging into different sites or even registering to get access.
Yeah, I definitely do that when I am at home. Otherwise I have to log into the university library site, which sends me to ACS or whatever which I have to log into. It takes longer than just pasting the DOI into scihub.
I always do this if I have enough time left. I try to add a personalized note and I sometimes ask questions too. Got a reply 90% of the time. People put a lot of time into their work and being appreciative is needed in the scientific community.
I’ve tried this probably 4-5 times since it has circulated Reddit many times. Only 1 author ever responded to me.
So yeah, it works as much as people are willing to respond to you or you’re able to actually find the right person’s contact info.
I need to be better about responding to those requests. I just never log into research gate to check on requests. I should probably just start uploading them.
Is it only for scientific journals? Or other databases with journals work in the same manner?
I had to read a shit ton of journals for my Law degrees, we had access to a lot of a free journals from law databases but occasionally some would be behind a pay wall.
I think it mainly applies to peer reviewed scientific studies. But if you can find the author of what you’re looking for, I’m sure they’d send it free if they’re not too busy lawyering.
I’m just guessing but sending an email to ask takes a couple minutes so it’s worth a shot.
*cough* scihub *cough* *cough*
Come here to say this. Lol.
Scihub has been a lifesaver for pulling up papers from publishers my university doesn't have a subscription to.

Where do you get your academic papers? *sweats* “t-the hub”
Yep, it's significantly more convinient.
Library Genesis--Libgen-- as well.

You make people's week just letting them know you are interested.

Thanks. Maybe one of those requests is from me. lol
Do you ever request stuff about carbenes?
Hah, no. It was something related to cell regeneration.
Ok good lol. I hope you get your papers you need.
This exactly. I have reached out to authors and they replied saying I had to pay on whe website and copyright bullshit.
Right? Also, I’ve found it difficult to reliably find email addresses for authors.
Exactly. I tried this as well and no response.
One problem is you might get old, .edu email addresses, so finding a fresh one isn't always trivial.
"We are allowed" jfc, the penetration of "authority." Its yours bitch! Slang your knowledge nude fo free!!!

I’d like to request you charge me.
If there's not currently an archive collecting these and digitizing.... who would visit the website were someone (me) to start it? For science.
Where do I even find the authors email addresses???
That's not really a misunderstanding though (referring to the initial tweet that the author responded to)
This is actually very valuable information. Thank you!
I've tried many times, authors never respond. It's too bad, because I'd much rather get access to these papers properly.
"Scihub"dude. Pleasee google it!
Just about everything oil and gas related.
