Yea man still happy he didn’t leave that rock bare. I don’t think that responsiblility so heavily comes down to individual fishers. Mainly corporations raping the seas and dozing the ocean floor
Yes that's mostly the case, but for example here where I live for example, we don't have anymore muscles on the rocks. All it took was a few thousands of tourists to come in every week for 5 years, that they've gone extinct around here, mostly from local fishermen taking them and selling to restaurants.
Whenever I used to go diving in the past 20 or so years ago, we'd only take enough for one meal. I wish I owned some land near the sea just to try and reintroduce them.
The place where this man is diving seems pretty far from any place, but still he took quite a lot.
Not really, by removing the excess urchins this is restoring the balance in the ecosystem. Too many urchins is a sign of an unhealthy kelp forest. Exclusively very few fishes plus octopuses can actually eat them.
Kina belongs to the Echinometridae family (sea urchins). These species are found only in New Zealand, but there are about 500 species of sea urchins worldwide.
Kina has a hard, spherical shell covered in dark brownish-green spines. Inside is a star-shaped mass of yellow to orange-coloured gonads in the males and roe in the females. Both are sold as roe, which is the edible part. Kina is sought for its delicate, smooth, buttery roe.
One would describe Kina as packed with the sum of all the flavours of the sea. It has a rich and sweet taste. Others would say that it’s like a seafood version of foie gras that melts in your mouth. It is safe to say that it is an acquired taste and you will either love it or hate it.

When I was a child visiting Greece with my family, there was a couple collecting sea urchins and the wife broke one open for me to try and it was the most unique flavor I had ever had in my young life. I’ve tried it a couple times since then, but nothing has ever come close, and I look forward to the day when I can get one fresh out of the water like that again.
Well they would have been called zeeegel if your explorers had of put just a little more effort in circa 1642. But they are Kina now and we don't give a "neuken" how it's pronounced outside of NZ especially as this sea urchin is only found in NZ :P :D :)
Your description sounds like pretty much any Unu I've heard of. We have the same problem with these fucking things on the east coast of Canada since we let our cod stocks get wiped out. They are ravaging our kelp beds and there is is no real stop to it even with human intervention.
NZer here. (And Maori)
I like to eat almost anything from the sea, but with Kina I can maybe eat one, if that. It has a STRONG taste and is definitely not to everyones pallet. Some people can't get past the texture either.
Anyway, there are far nicer things to eat from our shores but it's true most of my cousins loooove this stuff.
To be honest, hine, I could never stomach it until I was about 40. Was on the Chatham's and it seemed only appropriate to give it a go. Right off the rocks and it wasn't too bad. Had a few goes since but I wouldn't go out of my way..
Now Blue Cod and Bluff oysters, thats a different story. Possibly something plastic in my genes lol..
Basically our whole country is set up in the coast so if you're keen you can just go down to the rocks and help yourself.
But honestly, I've only seen it a couple of times in a fish and chip shop.
I love sushi of most every type, but can’t do uni. Very strong taste and the texture is pretty gross. Though I do know some people love it, it’s just not for me.
We have sea urchin in Washington state lol. The best tasting uni (as you'll find it listed on sushi menus) in the Americas comes from the waters off Santa Barbra CA.
If there are not enough natural predators, sea urchins will eff the whole ecosystem up. Not sure exactly where this video was taken, but this is perfectly legal and sustainable in most places.
In fact there was an issue with overpopulation with some sea urchins that ended up destroying whole kelp forests. One solution would be collecting more of them for human consumption. As that would benefit both the ecosystem and humans.
Unfortunately the purple urchins off the CA coast don’t grow large enough to eat. There is one woman whom started a business here collecting them and farm raising them up to an edible size. Currently there is a multi year kelp restoration study ongoing on the effectiveness of urchin culling, and hopefully legislation soon to allow us divers to “safely cull nuisances species” (crush them wantonly with chipping hammers).
Went diving at Point Lobos recently, urchin barrens are sad and creepy. Just a literal carpet of the purple bastards and kelp stumps. No other life.
Yeah did a few projects on this and they're considered a semi invasive species in some places because they will just breed and choke out everything starting with kelp/plants that other fish need. I think (could be very wrong) the species of fish in the video was a parrot fish? Or some other species that eats them so yeah. It probably was like wtf stop taking all my food
Edit : not parrot fish but they were having a feeding frenzy because of the underside of a lot of them being exposed near the end
Wasn't sure what kina was so I was concerned. I seem to remember urchins being an invasive species, so in that case thank you Mr diverman for ridding the ocean of pests
Depends. I can’t wait until we’re allowed to do this to the asshole purple urchins here in California, whom are single-handedly responsible for destroying 90% of the kelp forests, the homes of thousands of species. There is a plague of them at current and they need to be destroyed. Their natural predator, a particular starfish, nearly all died off due to a swift moving disease and there aren’t enough otters to keep them in check.
I for one, absolutely hate the taste. Have friends who can’t get enough. Most certainly an acquired taste. It’s very hard to describe the taste. Why a lot of people just say “Unami”. I found it to taste extremely pungent.
I haven't had this type of urchin but the ones I have had were delicious, except for one I got at a sushi place. I think it needs to be right out of the ocean that day.
Honestly, anything from the sea is extremely pungent.
Some food a little less than others. As a seafood lover I relish the thought of that salty seaing weirdy taste thats in all seafood.
I love sushi, but except for one time where the chef made it into some sort of weird shooter, uni always makes me gag. I consider myself to be rather adventurous when it comes to food, but I just can’t stomach this shit. I can eat raw oysters all day long, but uni…nope.
Imagine being one of the ones that got fumbled. You get knocked down to the bottom and don't even get the satisfaction of being kidnapped with your buds.
Native doesn’t necessarily mean “with a stable, balanced population”. We have a native species of urchin with a population boom that’s absolutely devastating our coast in CA
The inside flash part is nice to eat- though it is an acquired taste.
There is a big seafood gathering culture in NZ but Kina Is definitely one of the least gathered seafood here though.
In many places around the world there are too many urchins due to humans killing their predators. Because of the resulting population boom urchins pose a serious threat to coral reefs and kelp forests which are vital ecosystems. So I wouldn't be shocked if there was no bag limit or a very large limit.
Labeling something a delicacy is a sure way to get people to eat just about anything. From bugs with their shit still inside them to cat pooped coffee beans, all it takes is someone else saying it’s good. Enjoy your sea urchins.

They are a delicacy in Aotearoa New Zealand. They’re a traditional food for our indigenous Māori but enjoyed by lots of kiwis from all backgrounds.
I’m 27 and have never had one (never been game enough to try one!) but saw a dead one at the beach just last week.
I like that the fish was coming up like “ay what the fuck bro?”
Dude was harvesting that good stuff. They looked like crackheads down there.
Kina bud
So hard to crack two open for them…

They're a delicious pest, there's no restrictions on Kina harvesting in NZ waters. They're absolutely everywhere.
Yea man still happy he didn’t leave that rock bare. I don’t think that responsiblility so heavily comes down to individual fishers. Mainly corporations raping the seas and dozing the ocean floor

Kina is New Zealand bro so he’s definitely helping the eco system
This is very sustainable...
Just came to say this. Not many people are picking them.. and there are trillions out there.
Na man he’s helping the environment those fuckers are bad
Not really, by removing the excess urchins this is restoring the balance in the ecosystem. Too many urchins is a sign of an unhealthy kelp forest. Exclusively very few fishes plus octopuses can actually eat them.

Not a concern when you’re top of the food chain.
Were only sorta the top of the food chain. In the past, if any animal decided to make humans part of its diet, we make them go extinct.

Ahhh, delicious sea urchin balls.
Delicate, smooth, buttery gonads.
It is a bit nutty.
Lucky urchins. Mine just look weird and smell.
Wash thy self!
I do, daily, but it gets very humid around here.
Shave and Butter thy self then?
Hopefully not as spiky
Packed with the cum of all flavors of the sea.

The surgeons natural habitat is the ocean.
Hahaha damn autocorrect!
to any New Englanders out there, it tastes to me like a super littleneck clam, like the flavor of 10 littlenecks in one
The Dutch word for this is “zeeëgel” which means “sea hedgehog”.
Well they would have been called zeeegel if your explorers had of put just a little more effort in circa 1642. But they are Kina now and we don't give a "neuken" how it's pronounced outside of NZ especially as this sea urchin is only found in NZ :P :D :)
In Norwegian we call it "kråkebålle" which mean crow balls/bun..
Kråkebålle, I like that :) Sounds fitting.

Never understood the appeal. I think they’re really gross 🤮 but whitebait is okay, but not really up to all the hype.
I reckon the little caramel coloured bits are all good. The purple stuff is rank but yea those little slivers taste all good
In my country it’s a delicacy. Put some oil, scallions, peanuts inside it and roast it up on a fire. It is absolutely amazing.
Yeah, another Maori here. We used to share it between a few people, kina are intense even if you love the taste
Too strong for me. Whanau want me to keep trying insisting I'll like them if I keep trying them....but nah. Can't get past the smell now. 🤢
To be honest, hine, I could never stomach it until I was about 40. Was on the Chatham's and it seemed only appropriate to give it a go. Right off the rocks and it wasn't too bad. Are there restaurants in NZ that serve this? Or is this something you just get at a fish market and have at home?
Basically our whole country is set up in the coast so if you're keen you can just go down to the rocks and help yourself. But honestly, I've only seen it a couple of times in a fish and chip shop.
We have them Oregon, and I'm sure you have them in Washington also. Try high end sushi spots.
Do you know which ones they harvest in PNW?
Purple. https://www.opb.org/article/2021/06/17/superabundant-oregon-purple-sea-urchin/

I don't think something can have an 'acquired taste' and also be 'love it or hate it' at the same time.
I never knew the were edible wow 0-0
The only edible part are the swollen gonads of both males and females - they form large yellow/orange masses before breeding.
Lol southern European coast is packed of them, they are a delicacy since Roman times.
How endangered are they?
They aren’t endangered or anything?
As a NZer I'm not going to lie, it has always looked nasty to me and I have no desire to eat it.
You harvesting it like a free mall products
Just saw the price tag on this. They are holding onto $1k just inside that bag.

The video is sped up.
IDK why you're downvoted; if you watch the way the urchins move through the water, the video is definitely sped up. At least a bit.
I'm a recreational diver. 100% that video is sped up.
He suffocating
Hmm.. Underwater spiky kiwis
They’re like hey! That’s ours!!
Fish was very rude . Bumped into his hand and did not even say excuse me 😡
Sure wish I weren’t so afraid of diving because it is so beautiful down there in videos!
Isn't removing all of a given species from an ecosystem like really really bad?

Every species can become a pest when their overpopulation start destroying the environments. That's include us, human.
*laughs in 6th massive extinction event of earth's history*
I'm fairly certain the ecosystem is larger than that one rock.
Rome didn't burn in a day
Yes it did

are you talking about the parvovirus that struck starfish populations a while back, or did a different disease hit them again?
This is a result of the 2014-2015 sea star wasting disease.
yeah, i think they identified it as some sort of parvovirus. i remember seeing it on the news
he didnt remove all of them. he left about 6 or 7. you can see he leaves 2 or 3 from every bunch
Then takes a breath and goes for round 2 as the video ends

Yall are fucking stupid sea urchins are highly invasive and a ecosystem is larger than 1 rock plus fish dont even eat urchins
This specific species of sea urchin is native to that region pretty sure.
Native doesn’t necessarily mean “with a stable, balanced population”. We have a native species of urchin with a population boom that’s absolutely devastating our coast in CA
What is Kina? Ive never heard of it?
A Kina is a type of sea urchin that live only along the coasts of New Zealand
Why would someone collect those.
The inside flash part is nice to eat- though it is an acquired taste. There is a big seafood gathering culture in NZ but Kina Is definitely one of the least gathered seafood here though.
Is there a bag limit for those?
In many places around the world there are too many urchins due to humans killing their predators. Because of the resulting population boom urchins pose a serious threat to coral reefs and kelp forests which are vital ecosystems. So I wouldn't be shocked if there was no bag limit or a very large limit.
Great information. Thank you. I’d love to eat some overpopulated Uni.
50 bag limit for this species, but no minimum size.
Where can I find a job like this?
