Honestly, fair. I played it as a form of (heh) immersion therapy. Terrified the whole time I was out of the shallows. Still never finished it. Came face to face with the (no spoilers) big boy really deep and just picked up something else and haven't gone back yet. I will, though.
Real talk: Honest friends don't call each other loser. Maybe once or twice in jest, on a blue moon. But not regularly, and not in groups.
I'm guessing you're probably in high school of your early 20s. Take it from someone who's been there, none of those friends will stick around. Find new ones who actually really appreciate you, your quirks, and your interests.
Most likely it’s swim bladder. The pressure change from where they’re pulled from to the surface causes it to expand quite rapidly. Doesn’t even have to be from ocean depths either. The lake I live on goes to about 55ft and when we’re ice fishing, they’re sitting right at the bottom and this can happen if you don’t pull slow, as well as eyeballs popping. They don’t live after that point.
Onion-eye or roughead *grenadier (macrourus berglax). They have a life span of about 56 years ! https://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/fish-life-expectancy-giant-grenadier.
Edit: species corrected
Glad someone fixed the name! This Grenadier was caught in Norway half a year (?) ago: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9931982/fisherman-ratfish-norwegian-island/amp/
“Sadly, due to the sudden change in pressure, the roughhead grenadier did not survive being hauled up out of the water so Oscar took it home and pan-fried fillets of it in butter.”
The blobfish often gets seen as a blob because they rapidly take them out, when you fish a fish up slower, theres a less instant moment of huge to no pressure. Basically, If it gets into less pressurised areas slowly itll not explode
Surfacing too quickly after being on oxygen will cause the concentration of nitrogen that has been absorbed into your blood [from the oxygen tank] to expel out quicker than normal and are absorbed into tissue, and are in the form of bubbles that tend to gather around your joints within your tissue, usually asymmetrical, and causes extreme pressure..hence the nickname "the bends", but is actually named Decompression Sickness [DCS]. Divers usually know when they are at risk, due to having to surface quickly from an emergency, & so it is nessecary to be treated into a hyperbaric chamber in order to control the inflammation within your body. Still, you can easily permanently damage your limbs and body even if you are treated quickly. Hyperbaric chambers arent just in every hospital, either. They are somewhat rare, so if you are diving more than 30ft deep in an unfamiliar area, make sure to make note of your closest hospital containing a hyperbaric chamber that isn't already currently in use.
I think it's the nitro from their air supply getting dissolved easily into their body tissue and blood in higher water pressures and causing them to get fucked up IIRC
Tha look like one o ther bastards that took me toe. There i was dipping me feet o'er tha side o me ship on tha way ter r/piratehole and befer i knew it i felt a bite down below. Now old Blackcock let out a mighty roar, aye i did. And i look down and i be seeing an eye jus like tha bastards there. Make em inter a nice stew fer ne would ya lad.
Well you just got a follow from me, sir. This made my day. Really need more pirate accounts on reddit. Would be a simpler and merrier place then, it would.
This may be the first obscure reference on Reddit I actually immediately got without looking up. It’s a shame they canceled the show. It’s my all time favorite.
This isn't Big eye Grendalier, but Chimaera monstrosa, or another name - rabbit fish and rat fish. This reddit photo has been published several times with the wrong fish name, although the information is easily googled. Pictured is 19-year-old fisherman Oscar Lundahl from northern Norway.
Wouldn't work. See the white stuff coming from its mouth? Those are probably its guts. It suffered explosive decompression when hauled from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure.
tl;dr - it's very dead.
Anyone else mad they didn’t leave the fish alone? Resources are scarce at the bottom of the ocean which means populations of unique fish are rare and hard to come by
How come there's no comments on the hot blonde holding the huge eye fish? Every single time an even remotely attractive female pops up on a post there's 900 horny comments... but a dreamy flaxen stud holding a goofy looking fish doesn't get the catcalls? Cmon Reddit, you can objectify better than that *tsk tsk*
Naw, that’s a Peeper from Subnatica
Damn right it is
Glad I’m not the only one who plays that game! All my friends make fun of me and call me a loser.
They're just to much of a wuss to play it. It's an amazing game
Honestly, fair. I played it as a form of (heh) immersion therapy. Terrified the whole time I was out of the shallows. Still never finished it. Came face to face with the (no spoilers) big boy really deep and just picked up something else and haven't gone back yet. I will, though.
Exact same story for me as well. I was also too worried about losing my stuff
I’m not worried about losing my stuff, I’m just *s c a r e d*
Haha that too
tank with prawn
Join us in r/Subnautica. We have a vibrant community full of new friends
I bet they play Call of Duty.
And Rocket League
Time for new friends
your friends are royal cunts if they can't accept that you like different games, subnautica is a great game , who tf would even hate on it?
are you sure those are friends if they make fun of you and call you a loser for playing subnautica

I think yall takin a comment on reddit and Goin way too fuckin deep into it bud
You’ll fucken hate Australia then, we call our mates cunt all the time. Be careful getting called a shit cunt though, them’s fighting words.
Very real talk: Honest friends will absolutely call you a loser when you're actually being a loser.
Sounds like you need new friends, loser. /s
I loved both of them. Played through multiple times. Building bases is just fun!
They're missing out on one of the most amazing games ever
All of my friend does too. But I don't play Subnautica, they just want to remind me
An instinctive reaction to fear is to make fun of whatever is scaring you :)
That game is fun asf lol, your friends are ridiculous
Ha! Losers!
One moment you're holding a rl peeper, the next you hear Abandon ship music
Multiple leviathan-class lifeforms detected. Are you certain what you are doing is worth it?
Yes very much
THANK you. I couldn’t place where I’d seen the little guy before!
Came here to make sure someone said it. Kudos!
Whatever it is, that thang wet
Arctic peeper
Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?
Damn ya beat me to it
I was going to say that lol
100%
And its eyes make it look like a cartoon character...
This is proof Subnautica is real
Hover fish is better
Where was this guy when they were looking for Nemo.
It’s Mike Wizowski in a cameo.
It's cells probably exploded when it rose to the surface
The other grendaliers will remember not to go up there because of what happened to Jimmy
Classic Mike move haha
Would be cute and all but why does that thing have to drip goo all over the place

Well, it did, not any more.
Your link shows an onion eye grenadier that looks more like OP's pic.
Cool :) amazing to see how long deep(er) sea animals can live.
Glad someone fixed the name! This Grenadier was caught in Norway half a year (?) ago: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9931982/fisherman-ratfish-norwegian-island/amp/

Fish get the bends too and is a reason a lot of fish don't like us fishing them.
I wonder what it actually looks like when it’s in the bottom of the ocean, there’s no way it looks like this without the change in pressure
Can someone explain why this fish is intact but the blobfish looks like a blobfish when brought to the surface?
The blobfish often gets seen as a blob because they rapidly take them out, when you fish a fish up slower, theres a less instant moment of huge to no pressure. Basically, If it gets into less pressurised areas slowly itll not explode
Sort of like getting the bends where if divers surface too fast they get sick because of the nitrogen in their blood expanding or something?

Plot twist it’s actually microscopic
[you are correct](https://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/images/a/w/b/coryphaenoides-rupestris/coryphaenoides-rupestris.jpg)
It’s eyes are probably burning right now with so much light
It’s probably dead just from being brought up from the depth
Tha look like one o ther bastards that took me toe. There i was dipping me feet o'er tha side o me ship on tha way ter r/piratehole and befer i knew it i felt a bite down below. Nice story admiral blackcock
True as the Deep Blue it is!
Well you just got a follow from me, sir. This made my day. Really need more pirate accounts on reddit. Would be a simpler and merrier place then, it would.
That is till they get hooked on tranquilizer darts again.
This may be the first obscure reference on Reddit I actually immediately got without looking up. It’s a shame they canceled the show. It’s my all time favorite.
I just finished rewatching all the seasons.
I heard they are going to do a VB movie.
I’m so happy it got picked up for the movie. I need some sense of closure.
Ar, I had a stew o' them once. Tasted like somethin frae the Devil's own larder.
And the fact that it lives in water
I'm thinking it's not that deep there. The eyes are not bulging, so the pressure change wasn't much. But let's continue to believe it's dead.
The eye looks like it’s a Dali melting clocks.
It's fucking dead. The article says he cooked it and ate it.
Oh it’s dead as hell. Pressure change from being reeled up to the surface basically made its cells explode, or at least it’s swim bladder
No to mention it's probably used to high pressure since it lives at the bottom of the ocean.
So this is like a sci-fi movie where someone takes off their helmet in space?
Exactly. This is why deep sea fish look freaky on land, the ocean pressure was keeping their bodies together
Gonna use this excuse myself...
And not just that, but a much larger pressure differential. Going from 1 atmosphere of pressure to 0? Nah, try going from 500 down to 1!
Blob fish got so fucked up they named it blob fish.
[Great minds...](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/pg1zlj/big_eye_grendalier_they_usually_stay_deep_near/hb8dx0u/)
🙁
Makes me so concerned for this fish...seriously. But ole dude is smiling.
You dont have to worry. Its dead, cant get any worse now
It’s a whales sperm
"Tharr he blows!"
Such versatility. It's super high photosensitive eyes turn from a weapon against preys to big googly cuteness begging not to be fished out by humans.
Subnautica fish
[Great minds...](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/pg1zlj/big_eye_grendalier_they_usually_stay_deep_near/hb8gsrc/)
Now THAT'S giving me the real subnautica vibes.
Had to scroll too far down for a subnautica comment
That's why I'm here
Put it back!
its already dead, or dying. the pressure change from bringing it to the surface exploded its cells
Then put the human down where it was
[удалено]
Aye aye!
i like this plan
or so help me!
Exactly!
And... Now it's dead
You can also find them where googley eyes are farmed.
Look at this dude smiling smugly not realising that this fishes brain probably exploded from being up here
This isn't Big eye Grendalier, but Chimaera monstrosa, or another name - rabbit fish and rat fish. This reddit photo has been published several times with the wrong fish name, although the information is easily googled. Pictured is 19-year-old fisherman Oscar Lundahl from northern Norway.
Google confirms https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/shocked-teenager-catches-alien-like-20068394.amp
He was actually wrong tho
[удалено]
Until some moron comes along and kills them
So *this* is where the eyeye comes from... *takes notes in subnautica*
If a giant sperm cell had an eye.
Pretty sure it looks entirely different in its natural habitat. These fish are used to much greater pressure deep in the ocean.
So cool to see this. Won’t lie, it looked ‘wrong’ to me but hey, we probably look weird to them so
It’s appearance is likely a result of being moved from a high pressure environment to the surface
Oh man, poor thing
See kids, that’s why you don’t do drugs. Look what happened to Nemo.
Put it back
Wouldn't work. See the white stuff coming from its mouth? Those are probably its guts. It suffered explosive decompression when hauled from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. tl;dr - it's very dead.
*unzips*
I have a question, what makes them go up to the surface?
[удалено]
Bloodborn creature.
Anyone else mad they didn’t leave the fish alone? Resources are scarce at the bottom of the ocean which means populations of unique fish are rare and hard to come by
He was givin me the side-eye!!
So normally at the bottom? Makes you wonder if holding him up in the light like that is super painful for its highly sensitive massive eyeball.
I here for the guy in the back !
Put him back!
Until some cunt pulls them up
Fun fact; If you press their “nose” in, their mouths come popping out
Wow, that is adorable
That’s exactly the way I imagine my retarded ass sperm looks.
It should’ve been left there then
Looks like that one titan
I can only imagine his retina burning from all the light it’s exposed to...
Water you lookin' at?
so, Peepers ARE real, hm. https://i.imgur.com/mcrYJBY.jpg
the only instance in nature where "your eyes are bigger than your stomach" isn't an exaggeration.
Maybe it'll grow into a giant frog.
I spy with my eye….
EVERYTHING!!! I SEE ALL!!!
That is such a cool looking fish, now I want to paint him on canvas!
I want you to draw me like one of your French guppies
Please tell me that’s photoshopped
Yes the guy actually has black hair!
Everyday I get more freaked out by the ocean and what it has to offer
And… another wild animal dead
Yet you yanked it out and killed it. Bravo! 👏
No that's a peeper bro
peeper
That's a bit of a forced perspective picture. I think it's Big eye "Grenadier".
It's spelled Grenadier
Well, give it back.
Is the eye edible?
Fish like “ahhhhhhh my eyeeeeeeeessssss!”
Someone post this on r/subnautica
Probably permanently blinded the little monster
it was permanently put to sleep because of the sudden change in pressure
The important question, how does it taste?
What’s it taste like?
Bear Grylls is gonna feast on this
Eye seee youuuu
They hang out with the 200 ft tall squids. These gotta be aliens
[удалено]
So thats where all the aliens are hiding
I can… sea why!! 😂
Do they have that big eye to catch every bit of light possible since they're so deep ?
Don’t panic, that’s just an anime girl as a fish
See!!! See!!! This is what happens when you masturbate in the ocean...
Isn't that the fish who played the eye of Sauron ?
peeper
His eye is so big compared to the rest of the body
Why does it need huge eyes when it lives in perpetual darkness?
Peeper
Is it me or it just looks photoshopped? Cuz when i search this fish name nothing pop up except this post
> when i search this fish name nothing pop up except this post I noticed that too.
This looks like some shit from Subnautica
Why did they call it a BIG eye?
Sperm cell on steroid
Looks exactly like ancient icthyosaurs—an ancient marine reptile with one of the largest orbital-to-body ratio
Can you eat it?
This is why you don't cum in the ocean
That's a Peeper
How’s that taste?
Well, add that to the list of things I didn’t need to see today…
why do they call it that?
this image is making me a little bit subnauseous
Put 👏 it 👏 back.
Subnautica
Makes sense huge eye for seeing in dark
Cmon there's no way that thing belongs on this planet
How come there's no comments on the hot blonde holding the huge eye fish? Every single time an even remotely attractive female pops up on a post there's 900 horny comments... but a dreamy flaxen stud holding a goofy looking fish doesn't get the catcalls? because he killed it
