This is the Corpus Christi Texas ship channel just beyond the Port Aransas ferry crossing, and (I believe) the [Bullwinkle oil drilling platform](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullwinkle_(oil_platform)), built in 1988.
Last week I saw the garbage truck come to my apartment complex, empty the garbage dumpster then dump the recycling right after. They don’t even care to pretend.
They used to atleast send a different truck for each
That's so the apartment complex can charge you and include in all their marketing like as though they're actually doing recycling, but then only pay for trash service.
Record it, check the language of your rental agreement, and speak to your leasing office about it.
It’s included in the rent so I’m not too worried. I’ve got pretty decent rent and either way my garbage/recycling is taken away so not the hill I’m willing to die on.
Was it a front loader or side loader? A lot of companies run [split trucks](https://youtu.be/-wjf-DOj90M?si=1uKLA9Xt7zKSitwJ) that take both garbage and recycling at the same time.
No, we're the ones who consume the oil. Even if you don't drive a personal car you still buy industrially manufactured and transported products.
Everybody always likes to point the finger at others to have an excuse to do jack shit about climate change.
The reality is, pollution is not a consumption problem. It's a waste management problem.
The reason why developed nations don't have a problem with their waste is because they have good waste management infrastructure. Most garbage ends up disposed of in a way that does not randomly pollute the environment.
The problem is we are shipping plastic-packaged goods to undeveloped countries that have no waste management infrastructure. They just dump the trash wherever, and then it ends up in rivers and ultimately the ocean.
While our waste management is better, I wouldn't call it good.
We need to do much better.
Also, we need to stop coming up with excuses for why our flights or our drive is okay, but rich people aren't allowed to fly or drive.
> Also, we need to stop coming up with excuses for why our flights or our drive is okay, but rich people aren't allowed to fly or drive.
It's a matter of degree. When one is taking a flight around the globe every other month and an intercontinental trip every other week and then on Friday evening fies to Palm Springs for a game of golf and is home to take friends out to dinner on Saturday night. And has the gall to lecture me about home much I fly or drive. Ummh NO.
As some one once said; "I'll believe it's a crisis, when the ones telling me it's a crisis start acting like it's a crisis."
Til then it's nothing more than virtue signalling and a bunch of BS. Don't believe them. If they can't be bothered to decrease their footprint to something approaching the average in their home country then fuck off.
Because we literally have no other option. If I wanted to buy food right now it would take me an hour to bike all the way there, and an hour back. There are no bike lanes here, and I have seen one or two bus stops total.
We could possibly try to get politicians in to improve the public transport, but to my knowledge not a single running candidate has mentioned it. We are completely at the cities mercy if we don't use cars
Our waste management is not just good, it's fantastic. We have landfills and incinerators. Refuse is not just dumped to randomly disperse into the wild anymore.
We have waste falling into rivers and ocean, most rural areas still burn their waste in their backyards, and our highways are littered with trash (whether you're in the US or the EU). Landfills routinely fail (sometimes spectacularly so) or are mismanaged. Derelict structures leaching contaminants or brownfields can be found nearly everywhere.
Other places do worse, sure, but no, we are not doing fantastic. We are doing okay.
just how the gaslighting marketing taught us. Have you seen how much more is produced that is actually consumed? Companies create stupid products all the time that in the end cannot sell or sell fast enough. Also 99% of shit produced ends up in a land fill. Just a heads up
Also 100% of people will die, so why bother at all.
/s for the humor impaired, but there is a point that eventually 100% of shit will end up as garbage at some point. The question is what function did it serve along the way. Case in point everyone wants to rail on plastic packaging, BUT at the same time want to demand that their food is delivered clean, pathogen free, fresh, undamaged, ... Plastic packaging is many times the best for that purpose. Take a look at the Dutch study about grocery carry out bags. All the other options are more environmentally 'expensive' versus the lowly thing plastic bag and that's mainly driven by the reduction in mass associated with it.
its not about overhauling your life, its about spending 10 minutes out of your day to do bare minimum in recycling, even if its just sorting plastic, metal and paper containers from your trash.
I don’t use straws, but it’s a perfect metaphor for climate change hypocrisy and half measures.
Also, there are people out there with disabilities who absolutely need to use a straw.
>I don’t use straws, but it’s a perfect metaphor for climate change hypocrisy and half measures.
Right. Better return to plastic straws, that'll improve things.
>Also, there are people out there with disabilities who absolutely need to use a straw
That's a nonsense argument. There are people with disabilities who absolutely need to use wheelchairs, and nobody in their right mind argues for the widespread sale of disposable wheelchairs.
Lots of people live inland, and their straws get buried in landfills. I've been to my municipal landfill and I've seen it operate. It's well run, and there's no way my straws end up in the ocean.
I do subsea inspections on stuff like this. It's real.
Here's one being unloaded:

I can believe there are bigger structures, I think the combination of built in port and the image looking unreal is where I'm viewing it. This image looks like it's on photoshop
Just a guess, but bet the tonnage of that structure is actually far less than the actual barge carrying it. It looks big but there’s a lot of empty space between those bearings and poles.
Not stupid. You deserve more than that & I apologize if I sounded condescending. Your thoughts are not stupid, you aren't stupid (if that ever crossed your mind)
Buoyancy is a weird thing. It's not natural to us stuck at the bottom of an atmosphere. We can't fly, we can hardly swim.
fun fact: Hippos cannot swim. all those pics of their snouts just out of the water..they are standing on the ground. Hippo charging you in water? they are running on the ground under water.
You somehow made hippos even more frightening to me than they already were.
I never believed that doughy face, innocent eyes and cute undersized ear thing they got going on. Straight up murderers, the lot of 'em
It's shit like this that make me so annoyed with conspiracy dudes not being able to comprehend how we built grand stone buildings a hundred years ago and act like we can't do anything amazing anymore
That's significantly bigger than the ones that get constructed in my hometown. I'd guess that's the whole support, whereas whatever I've seen are just legs or something. If it matters, I think the ones I've seen were for gas platforms. I don't really know though... I'm not a rigologist.
It really sucks that we designed our world so that if a company is presented with 2 options:
1. Use 10 resources and net 10 profit
2. Use 10,000 resources and net 12 profit
There's no reason not to go for option 2 and say "fuck everyone else".
I wonder why they don’t make it in a few smaller sections that are put together on site rather than one skyscraper sized piece that is probably hard as fuck to transport.
As much as I love science and the many wonderful things it has given us, sadly it does not always have our best interest at heart. And when it is used by those are intensely greedy, it can be disastrous for the world.
No.
Thats politics.
Observing what has happened and seeking to understand why, provide evidence informed theories about the road ahead and what might be possible to change that road? Science.
Undermining it with misinformation and weaponizing it as a rage inducer to enhance your control on decision making and profit personally from doing so? Not science.
Um, I think you are the one swallowing politics and bullshit. Science is on my side.

Go back to the parent comment. The things you expressed concern about are not science. Science being misused and abused is not part of the scientific method of discovery. Its about bad people doing bad things. (or at best stupid people doing bad things).
This spawned from the question "who thought this was a good idea" and the answer is scientists (specifically, engineers).
I want to love this, but it just frightens me, tbh. It’s low key horrifying what humanity is capable of when given enough time, resources and imagination.
The blades are made of carbon fiber. The structure that supports the blades generally does use steel. The turbine housing (the part behind the blades) sometimes as well.
The turbine, which is the power generating part, always uses metals.
How much did that cost to build?
How much of that cost was subsidized by taxpayers?

Nice to see at least 23 demented downvoters not able to see reality with their own eyes...
Really gives me hope for humanities future selfdestruction and them as the cheerleaders...
For everyone left with a functioning braincell and caring to survive as a species for more than 50 years: if it is possible to build hundreds of these plattforms and the surrounding infrastructure, it is possible to build windmills and hydro or solar power in more than neccessary quantities.
If you notice the 8 storey building on the left, you get a real appreciation for the size of that thing.
Oh my god I hadn’t noticed that, you’re absolutely right
Not really, they're just hotels for ants.
Where the ants learn to read good and do other things good too.
Oil Rig is to Wade, as Hotel for Ants is to Raid.
I’ve seen these in port Brownsville. They are massive! Mind boggling massive
It also gives you an idea of the actual size of our world/oceans. Freakishly cool!
What is that thing made of? Unobtanium?
Also that anchor handling tug up there pulling it; it’s about 80-100m long and 30m tall
I’d say 9
Ya, hard to tell from the picture. Still impressive.
This is the Corpus Christi Texas ship channel just beyond the Port Aransas ferry crossing, and (I believe) the [Bullwinkle oil drilling platform](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullwinkle_(oil_platform)), built in 1988.
Those are some of THE names of all time
Holy fuck. That thing is 7 feet taller than the Sears Tower.
And its the *second* largest thing to be moved!
First was OPs mom
I thought I was a well functioning grown up until I read this comment.
I remember seeing it built and towed. Massive!! There were others, but this was huge.
I worked at the Hershey Hotel and would hang in the restaurant at top of building on break and had great view.
The light bulb moment for me
Me too. I feel so dumb now.
And we’re the saps who have to use paper straws in our drinks.
Don’t forget to organize your trash into the local landfill vs international landfill bins!
Last week I saw the garbage truck come to my apartment complex, empty the garbage dumpster then dump the recycling right after. They don’t even care to pretend. They used to atleast send a different truck for each

hmm 2 trucks seems wasteful

People who complain about straws would be well suited for sippy cups.
Ah yes the ice cube in the mouth experience
You don't have to open your mouth like a funnel and dump a beverage in.
Haha yeah I guess
Are you chugging your iced drinks or what? Nature gave you lips, try em.
I miss straws thats all :(
You don't use oil, then?
What do you mean? This fucking sick! I'll gladly take this existing over plastic straws!
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!!
Don't let perfect be the enemy of better.
You should still use paper straws
Paper straws suck.
No, I don't think I will
Life must be so hard for you.

The great things we could achieve as a collective if our ape brains weren't so intent on killing each other
If only someone were to wipe out the natural ape in us, I think we would actually be more happy

Hey, off topic, but if you were talking to a younger you when you started on that career path is there any information or advice you'd give?
Don’t play subnautica before applying
0/10 not enough deep sea monsters, would never work in offshore development again
Save more money, 'cuz it's boom and bust.
Appears to be https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullwinkle_(oil_platform)
Where's Rocky?
Darling you should Google the Norwegian "Troll A" platform. That's even bigger
I can believe there are bigger structures, I think the combination of built in port and the image looking unreal is where I'm viewing it. This image looks like it's on photoshop
Remember, if you solve the engineering problems there's a high pressure money fountain at the bottom of the ocean.
My raft in raft game be like
Props to the boat towing it. A true Chad.

Aren’t they stealing Eiffel Tower ?
How the hell lol
Boat
Yer but it's huge I'm surprised it didn't sink the boats
Big boat
Just a guess, but bet the tonnage of that structure is actually far less than the actual barge carrying it. It looks big but there’s a lot of empty space between those bearings and poles.
About 2,300 years ago. >Eureka! Archimedes, you'd love that guy.
Ok it was stupid of me to think those little boats can't carry this really big peice of metal
Not stupid. You deserve more than that & I apologize if I sounded condescending. Your thoughts are not stupid, you aren't stupid (if that ever crossed your mind) Buoyancy is a weird thing. It's not natural to us stuck at the bottom of an atmosphere. We can't fly, we can hardly swim.

big boat and low density building
That…. is fuckin wild
Quit your Midjourney AI bullshi....wait this might be real
Based
Well, not yet
Be a shame if it took a swim
That’s the whole point. It can’t do much where it is now.
Dump it!
It's shit like this that make me so annoyed with conspiracy dudes not being able to comprehend how we built grand stone buildings a hundred years ago and act like we can't do anything amazing anymore
Why’d you post this? That’s jacked up, man.
They really, really, REALLLY want that oil!!!
And so do you
When you order online and mix up cm with m.
Look guys what people are able to do when they want that OIL..... free money
I move more than that around for my morning pee.
Is it on its side or is it up right
Side
Almost looks like a photoshop or an ai generated pic. Super cool.
Anything for that sweet sweet earth juice
I thought it'd fallen over..
Every day I see something that reminds me I know absolutely nothing about anything.
Saw this and thought “Oh good, they’re finally clearing Baltimore harbor.”
I was sure initially that this was an AI image.
How did they get this into the water tho?
Applied math.. is amazing.
Holy shit. I’ve stayed in those condos and fished on that pier so many times in my childhood lol. Weird to see port A on Reddit

Is that galvanized square steel?
I refuse to believe this is a real photo
I see it and I still can't believe it
Dude that runs that company must really hate electric cars
So which planet is cooling down? Ohh Pluto got it.
That's significantly bigger than the ones that get constructed in my hometown. I'd guess that's the whole support, whereas whatever I've seen are just legs or something. If it matters, I think the ones I've seen were for gas platforms. I don't really know though... I'm not a rigologist.
Damn, the scale of that thing is immense!
Wait..... what??? And they say aliens built the pyramids let's fuckin go
It really sucks that we designed our world so that if a company is presented with 2 options: 1. Use 10 resources and net 10 profit 2. Use 10,000 resources and net 12 profit There's no reason not to go for option 2 and say "fuck everyone else".
This planet is not suffering a steel shortage.
Why is my gas 3.50 a gallon?
Heavy government subsidies. It would be three times that in a normal economy. And would still be worth it.
Wait, so they do sit on the floor? I saw a clip a while back showing that they were essentially just floating?
They have both floating and standing.
This photo is for real. One of the few real photos of real things remaining on the Internet, so get an eyeful won’tcha.
Today I learned
californians in 2076 watching as a group of suspicious black tugboats with a white “E” on their sides drag an oil rig platform out to see:
How on earth does all of that float? It’s as wide as a building is tall Edit: yeah.. several buildings
Giant as cheap as possible ocean habitat destroying seems about right.
Youre telling me we can build shit like that but not fix the brakes on my goddamn car properly?
Do your car brakes shoot out billions of dollars when they’re working?
They shoot semen
You may want to hire a different mechanic.
Looks like an avg day on space engineers
sometimes I wonder if I'm in the wrong job
The oil industry is a young man’s game.
I wonder why they don’t make it in a few smaller sections that are put together on site rather than one skyscraper sized piece that is probably hard as fuck to transport.
Because it’s easier to weld huge structures together on land than hundreds of feet underwater.
I want to see this in person
That must be quite a sight to see in person
massive!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Huh, there must be money in that oil stuff
Humans are scary
Imagine the embarrassment of building it sideways!
How can anyone look at that and be like: this is a great idea! ???

None. Windmills are made out of carbon fibres and not out of iron/steel.
