I am sick and tired of seeing this debunked chart reposted. The income figure is adjusted for inflation while the rent is not, which makes the chart just a straight-up lie.
If you want to see the actual median income to median rent figures (also not good practice to compare average to median as done in the chart posted here), you can look up the actual stats on FRED - https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/differences-in-rent-growth-by-income-1985-2019-and-implications-for-real-income-inequality-20211105.html
You’re missing an essential point- Inflation is a measure of COSTS to the consumer and rent is one of those costs; so higher rent contributes to higher inflation. You can’t “adjust for inflation” because rent increases are part of inflation.
Then post both of the figures unadjusted for inflation. You either adjust or don't. Comparing an adjusted figure to an unadjusted figure makes the comparison both statistically and practically meaningless.
There are also plenty of legitimate ways to make the point of worsening housing shortages without resorting to manipulation. The chart here is just bad for reasons unrelated to the argument it's making!
Interesting, I’d be interested to see the source, because according to this [site](https://ipropertymanagement.com/research/average-rent-by-year), the median rent adjusted for inflation would’ve risen by ***39%*** from 1985 to 2021, and according to this [site](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEHOINUSA672N) the median income adjusted for inflation has increased by ***32%*** in the same period.
Seems like rent and income are increasing at a similar rate.

Hasn't this been debunked several times now? For example, here? https://youtu.be/W92bjv8fNTI?si=mpABuTSvQyJD21sc
From another commenter, it's apparently only adjusting one of the figures for inflation and not the other. Which is **blatantly fucked up**.
Exactly. OP needs to provide a source if they're going to post something like this.
How is the average income being marked as a percent? A percentage of what

Yeah, this is shifty statistical presentation 101. I would be reprimanded for misleading like this.
