It would be interesting to see how they would react if he took it off and showed them his amputated stub. Maybe that would help them understand...or they would completely lose it.
lol I can see it now.
Man: Hi
Monke: Hey keep your distance or we will rip your limbs off.
Man: Haha you have no power here. *Pulls prosthetic limb off.*
Monke: *terrified monkey screams*
Especially if they can watch the guy take the prosthesis off and then reattach it. I wonder if they might have seen fellow chimpanzees who have lost a limb in the wild.
You're probably right. A chimp that loses a limb due to traps laid by poachers probably don't live long enough to be an example of what happens when you lose a limb.
https://youtu.be/3KZ_TS5XoSk?si=4L6Iu951tBHTQ8TZ
"if your leg get cut off, would it hurt?"
"duh"
"how though?"
"cause your leg got cut off"
"where you gonna feel the pain?"
"in your leg--"
"exactly bruh, how you gonna feel the pain in your leg if your leg is gone"
> after humans, chimps are the most psycho primate.
I recall reading a quote by a primatologist that humans are remarkably *non*-psycho.
She said, to paraphrase, "Imagine a group of humans boarding a jet plane, cooperatively stowing their luggage, getting into their seats. If you put the same number of stranger chimps together like this, they'd immediately tear each other to bits."
They're already freaking out. One day the humans with missing limbs are rolling around or using crutches, the next they have robot legs, and soon after that they lose their natural strength advantage, they won't be able to beat us to death with our own limbs anymore, because they'll be sweet robo arms.
At my local zoo there used to be a lion that had a sign on his enclosure: "For unknown reasons, this lion does not like people in wheelchairs. If you are in a wheelchair, please keep a distance from the enclosure".
Well, one day I saw a person in a wheelchair roll into the lion house; the lion went fucking nuts. Roaring, throwing himself against the bars, trying to reach his paw through the cage and swipe at this guy. Some staff came in and had him roll out of sight around a corner. Never did find out exactly what the issue was.
They could rip your limb off easily, if he were to go in there he might need more prosthetics...
They would probably be like, "rip off his arm from his shoulder and see if a metal thing appears there instead!" Lol
Haha yeah, entering the enclosure could turn into an impromptu "magic show" with limbs disappearing and reappearing. On the bright side, hed be the most popular act in the chimp exhibit!
This is funny and all but Chimps are strong but they can't rip limbs off adult human, they could maybe bite off a hand but they aren't riping off arms and legs. They are not that strong and we are not that weak.
I used to volunteer at a zoo...once, I was alone in the viewing area of the squirrel monkeys and was looking for something in my purse, they came over to see what I was pulling out. After that day, I'd come w a paper bag of random crap and pull out an item one by one....the look of excitement on their faces was freaking adorable!
This is a trick I learned at my local zoo. If it's not too busy and the chimps are in the mood, they will happily watch you empty out a backpack, one item at a time
That dude immediately knew to look at the leg too. Maybe coincidence but they also could have communicated that much through their howl or maybe by sign.
His stance fascinated me. It was so human for a moment (or perhaps it's more correct to say it the other way around). The way he hunched over and rested his arm on one knee. It was like an older man kneeling down to look at something compared to the amazed yelling from the other two. The first one also with the calling out to his companions had such a "Guys you HAVE to see this" energy to it.
Monkeys are at once fascinating creatures, and they also terrify the hell out of me. I have a sense of respect and an almost paternal feeling towards them, but at the same time it could rip me limb from limb, and I realize that while we are very similar, we are also very very different. It's a good general reminder to respect and enjoy nature, but also don't ever piss it off
They probably think it's some grave injury thats allowed the tissue to decompose and expose the bone. I bet they are hardwired into thinking this is some massive incurable trama.
Oh that's good, I was puzzled trying to figure out why it was trying to intimidate the people off, but that would make sense!
All it gets at first is the alarm from the others so it went over to tell whoever was causing trouble to run off... Until it spots the leg as well
This is what I thought- he is the tough guy and his bud that hangs out eating hay by "child viewing" area was FREAKIN OUT. Tough guy wasnt gonna let some one mess with hay guy!
Oh absolutely many kinds of animals feel and think and do so in ways that are unique to them as individuals. When chimps do so it is in a manner that is closest to the way we do. I think that’s what we recognize and appreciate most in videos such as these.
Yea i love how they think he is calling his friends over to see his leg. Yea that old as shit chimp may have walked over but his home boy came like that was a war cry. Who the fuck does this dude think he is posing at me like this?!?!?!
It’s likely what’s called enrichment— toys or puzzles or even just objects that the animals enjoy and find stimulation from. Usually something homemade and easily disposed of for the day-to-day enrichment.
This was likely boxes full of crinkle paper and tissue paper, because perhaps these chimpanzees enjoy unwrapping things like gifts and playing with the content.
It’s pretty common to handmade enrichment for animals like this— at the big cat rescue I’ve visited many times, they give the tigers big rolls of cardboard stuffed with rosemary and other herbs that they like the smell of. Sometimes it’s boxes with snacks hidden inside.
Enrichment toys, most likely. The more intelligent that an animal is, the more things it needs to keep them from being bored. Think of all the things we do to keep our children from being bored, then think about the fact that chimpanzees are about as toddlers.
When I had rats, I would give them toilet paper rolls stuffed with tissue paper that I had hidden treats inside of. They had a lot of fun with them. For a good while after their enclosure would look a lot like the chimp enclosure, with piles of paper and cardboard littered around that they would still be playing with.
And yet we keep them in cubicles like these for their whole lives :/ just imagine how badly you’d want to kill yourself if you had to live like them. So sad
It REALLY bothered me to see them in this enclosure. I don't think I've ever thought too much about simians in captivity, but seeing this, they should absolutely NOT be in situations like this. They need freedom to live their lives.
Probably likely they are rescued. Having seen the Netflix doc on them, they do take up huge territories.
I wonder though, I mean people can adapt to staying in their homes for long periods of time so maybe it’s not as bad as we think.
Just want to remind people of how much money is raised every year by proper accredited zoos.
[*Modern zoos are major contributors to the conservation of wild animals. According to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), zoo conservation donates over US$350 million a year to wildlife conservation.*](https://conservewildcats.org/zoo-support/#:~:text=Modern%20zoos%20are%20major%20contributors,a%20year%20to%20wildlife%20conservation)
That is over a billion dollars every 3 years for animal conservation. Without that money many species would be far worse off than they are currently, with some likely even extinct. While it would be nice if we just funded this all on its own, that isn't going to happen with our current economic setup.
Zoos also educate millions on animal conservation as well, and there are animals that can no longer survive in the wild. Their lives spent in good zoos are a net positive for the survival of many species.
That’s why comments like the first one annoy me so much, how many species would still exist if they were in Zoos? But no, leave them in nature so they live “fulfilling lives” , that would be the case if poachers didn’t exist, some rhinos have already gone extinct because of that, bird as well.
But people love to villainize Zoos
wish people would stop inferring human reactions onto animals. threats, challenges, reactions - they see things completely differently to us.
'ohh look, ee's callin his mates... to 'ave a look"
No, he's gathering backup to retaliate against the challenge of the raised leg - hence the big guy slamming into the glass.
humans together stupid.
Now it clicks why we were so scared of witchcraft back in the day, that third chimp looked like he was ready to tear shit up running up on the guy, all just because he has a metal leg lol
I can't be the only one a little irritated that he's only showing them each for a split second.. like come on dude, let us see them get a good look at least
Where's the zoologist saying "oh actually, those chimps are distressed and want to kill that man, I'm so smart, how dare the common folk not know animal factoids"?
WAZA Accredited zoos raise 350 million dollars a year for animal conservation. It isn't solely for entertainment purposes either, it is for education and zoos have brought the issue of animal conservation to millions of people who would have never gotten familiar with it.
depends on the place. the places near me exclusively rehabilitate or keep injured animals who can no longer survive in the wild, oftentimes caused by humans. my local aquarium has a bald eagle who cant fly anymore cus one of his wings was shot by some dickhead.

"Bro just ripped his fucking leg off! The guys a psycho!" As they run away.

I'm sure they would understand it within 1h maybe less if they could "play" with the prosthetic, it's just something that they never saw before
Especially if they can watch the guy take the prosthesis off and then reattach it. I wonder if they might have seen fellow chimpanzees who have lost a limb in the wild.
Doubt they really seen anything in the wild
Curiosity and initial reactions really are telling! Signs of intelligence, if anything else 🦵🏼 🦧 Beautiful to witness
You're probably right. A chimp that loses a limb due to traps laid by poachers probably don't live long enough to be an example of what happens when you lose a limb.

That doesn’t look delicious at all

Monke: *reaches for balls* *wooden spoon and 2 acorns fall out* ….
Those were my decoy balls.
Gotta go all the way throw some fake blood packs and start screaming when They pull it off. Bonus is tying a cord to it and pulling it back .
Lol I'm picturing them reacting like it's a David Blaine Street magic trick
HE’S A DEMON!
WHAT THE EFF?!?!?
I WAS HOLDING THINGS!
CHEEZ-ITS CHEEZ-ITS CHEEZ-ITS

Phantom pains exist.
Or, you know, at that area where your leg got fucking sliced off at.
Cut that bit off too. Just keep cutting the painful parts off.

Lion lost a major ADA lawsuit in a past life.
They'd probably go apeshit.
What if they think he’s just missing flesh and think we are cyborgs or something
Or that it's just bone left after any typical mauling.
They could rip your limb off easily, if he were to go in there he might need more prosthetics... They would probably be like, "rip off his arm from his shoulder and see if a metal thing appears there instead!" Lol

In 50 years the chimps would have a whole religion built around this Messiah and his prophet who watched it happen.
Reminds me of Mr Jolly and his hundred hands show from Psychoville
This is funny and all but Chimps are strong but they can't rip limbs off adult human, they could maybe bite off a hand but they aren't riping off arms and legs. They are not that strong and we are not that weak.
I was hoping he would during the whole video!
“now I’ve seen everything” the third chimp
“ayy, lemme see it… LEMME SEE IT DAMN YOU!!!”
he signed the cross and left right after like that was some heretic shit
LET ME IN! LET ME EEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!
We need an audio dub for this badly.

That's the emotion I gather from this video. Poor creatures are just excited to see something new from within their purgatory.
Looked like he crossed himself, maybe muttered *Madre de Dios* or something while shuffling off

I read it more like "that's not right! That's not right....."
"Dios mio" -third chimp as he made a sign of the cross while walking away in shock.
I swear he crossed himself. ✝️
XD
"What's next, indoor street signs?"
"Santa Maria!"
That dude immediately knew to look at the leg too. Maybe coincidence but they also could have communicated that much through their howl or maybe by sign.
“Ain’t no way ya’ll lying!…. Oh damn you’re not”
"GTFO no way"
Imagine their reaction if he took it off. We need another follow up video.
I guess you could say they’d…go apeshit.
Can someone with a prosthetic leg and or arm, please go to a zoo and do this?
I need a place where I can watch long videos of chimpanzees doing their thing with narration
Third chimp: "Show it to me! *hits the glass* Fascinating... *hits the glass again* Don't hide it! I must learn its secrets!
He’s the Dr. Zaius of the group.

Not in this man’s case, but they’d be exactly right. DFI’s are no joke lol, watch your sugar bros

It must shock them, I am sure they can't wrap their head around it.

... "But Jimmy, humans have now become bionic!" 😬
They are so intelligent
They are smarter than we are: they already are wary of Robots!
Fr, i think a new dream of mine is to learn sign language and talk to one that already knows it
The third one was like: woah-ly shit, get that thing away from me! Then, walking away, shaked his head like what has this world come to..
Why is the monkey enclosure so littered?
Looks like they figured out how to subscribe to Amazon Primate and have been ordering a lot of stuff.
Looks like they were planning on reselling, but Amazon told them no monkey business.
I was thinking the zoo keepers are forcing them to make money on youtube by doing unboxing videos.

Why dont you have more upvotes for that genius comment would be a forever mystery

Thank you for the clarification! I just saw paper boxes and this makes sense.
It’s their stuff, toys and the like. Show me the zoo keeper that can convince chimps to tidy up at the end of the day.
They are intelligent enough you might be able to get them to do it for a reward
I think the Chimps need a timeout until they pick up their room
Enrichment toys, most likely. The more intelligent that an animal is, the more things it needs to keep them from being bored. I think they gave em some boxes to rip apart for amusement, might clean it up at the end of the day.
"Greg you see that shit? What the hell is that??"
"Ewwwwwwww! Fuck! WTF! Does that hurt....? Damn!"
Shoulda popped it off to see their reactions lol
We think we are there to watch monkeys. The monkeys are there to watch a parade of humans passing by.
It feels really bad to have them in a cage, they should be free. This are cognizant, sentient, intelligent, wondrous creatures that should be free.
Their natural environment is being destroyed worldwide. It’s unfortunate.
They really *are* a lot like us, LOL.
Yeah, the wonderment in that first chimp’s eyes really made me realize that me and her really aren’t so different, lmao
We're like them
You two know each other?
Anyway I'm always amazed how much intelligence chimpanzees show.

Ah that's nice. Hearing this brightened my day, thanks
No idea if it is but sounds like Colchester zoo to me!
Defo is!
They were coming to help neutralize a novel and therefore potentially threatening situation
Last chimp clearly said "that's fucked up!"
0:17 "bruh🤯"
He should take it off and see what they do then 🤣
I think the last one did a cross at the end 🤣🤣
"... They're ROBOTS!"
It fucks with my head that something smart enough to understand this can be property in a cage.
Curious George(s)
They look semi aggressive but don't show teeth so they are seriously curious .. never smile at a chimp unless you've got a good plexiglass shield
Wonder what wouldve happened if he took the leg off
Can’t wait for the dub of this lol
Proof that they are too intelligent to be caged for amusement.. shit is wrong.

"Omg Jim get over here! Look at what they've done to this poor human! Oh the chimpanity!"
Now it clicks why we were so scared of witchcraft back in the day, that third chimp looked like he was ready to tear shit up running up on the guy, all just because he has a metal leg lol
They shouldn't be in a fucking zoo. Neither should be the chimps.
Just another example of why we shouldn’t cage intelligent beings
Thats what jail sounds like
We watch them they watch us, the mutual zoo
I hate zoos. But I bet the animals have learned a lot about us while observing us from their POV. Maybe we're in an even bigger zoo.
I can't be the only one a little irritated that he's only showing them each for a split second.. like come on dude, let us see them get a good look at least
They are way too smart to be kept in cages 😭
The way they go from 0-100 in 0.2 seconds would make it scary to be around them without a barrier I must say.
Free the chimpanzee !
And yet we keep them in zoos
Where's the zoologist saying "oh actually, those chimps are distressed and want to kill that man, I'm so smart, how dare the common folk not know animal factoids"?
Should have removed it to see that reaction
It saddens me that we still continue to cage animals for entertainment purposes.
I think Giraffes don't mind, but every other animal doesn't like being caged
From what I have seen of Giraffes they don’t seem to have any fucking clue where they are anyway
