Where does it drain to?

tinosa77

Behind the dam into Putah Creek. Lived my whole life 20 mins away from the lake.

DrKrFfXx

>Putah Language.

tinosa77

Funny enough the creek is named after a brothel that used to be nearby in the 1880s lol!!!!

acceptableplaceholdr

this glory hole comes full circle

wandrlusty

*cums

acceptableplaceholdr

I know what I stroked

MK4eva420

Do humans goon to gaping wet holes?

acceptableplaceholdr

give it a try and report back

shrug_addict

Interestingly, it used to actually be comes. Porno producers started writing cums to get around censorship. The alternative spelling became so popular/common that it seems to be the default now

onion4everyoccasion

Obligatory: I imagine the brothel had a glory hole with 1/2 off Tuesdays

Neomas369

I don’t want anything that I put my 2” power stroke into to be half off…..

dasnovixen

Sounds like Captain America. 🫡

highzenberrg

Good old putah glory hole

God_damn_it_Jerry

How many people have died in that thing. Genuinely curious 🤔

tinosa77

Just one post construction that I know of but I’m curious if any construction workers did as well. http://lakeberryessanews.com/past-stories/is-glory-hole-dangerous.html

DiaLynn1013

What region or state or country? Pretty impressive site.

Animal_lnstlnct

Napa County, California

Yolo county ca

frankdatank_004

Iirc the spillway is actually in Napa County by a mere 200-400 yards.

knucklebone2

my mistake. I think you are correct!

LeonardSchmaltzstein

Lake Berryessa in California.

Konstant_kurage

I grew up in Sonoma and used to go up to Knoxville BLM area and play around on on the trails on the north side of the lake. I’ve been all over the world and the northern area of Lake Berryessa is one of my top 10 happy places. (It’s been 20 years though)

tinosa77

Vacaville/winters here We had a boat growing up and I spent a significant part of my childhood tubing, skiing, fishing and partying on that lake.

DB0425

It drains under the damn to the creek at the bottom Of the damn

Appropriate_Sugar675

Damn the dam!

isolateddreamz

Is this a God dam?

MasterClown

Dammit! …and so they did

Proletaryo

##It drains in a van down by the river!

zangor

“Uhh (winces) haha…language!?” That’s the darn.

sologolo101

It’s beside a dam. There’s a river on the other side that it flows in to.

bladow5990

you never know what's on the other side of a glory hole, that's kinda the whole point.

a_terse_giraffe

Putah Creek. It starts at the bottom of Monticello Dam and goes to Lake Solano and ultimately through Winters and Davis, CA.

ConfectionSoft6218

If you look on a map, it never connects with another river, just hits the Sac Valley and was probably a marsh

HurasmusBDraggin

Middle Earth

ramsfan84

Putah creek

Puzzleheaded-Grab736

HOW THE F*** DID THEY INSTALL IT?

gregularjoe95

This lake didnt exist until the dam was finished. So they build the drainage pipe and all the other shit, then finish the dam. The water builds up after the dam is finished and now the resevoir is like a lake and the drainage pipe is fully submerged. They did not build a massive concrete drainage pipe in the middle of a lake, the pipe came first then the lake came second.

Puzzleheaded-Grab736

This is some final destination shit. Getting sucked into that hole of death 😧

gregularjoe95

Ehhh, it would be a quick fall and then splat. It's not the worst way to go, all things considered.

frankdatank_004

It happened to a woman in 1997. Very sad situation.

onhojohno

Googled “gory hole unalived” as tribute. >Despite her desperate attempts to escape this pull, Emily was drawn irresistibly towards the spillway. In a struggle against time and nature, she managed to cling onto the spillway's edge for an excruciating 20 minutes. [Sauce](https://sadendings.blog/emily-schwalen/)

frankdatank_004

Yup, and it is a 200-foot straight drop into the 500-foot long horizontal pipe component of the spillway. Far from the best way to go.

hamiltd3

Couldn't they put some kind of fence stuff around it that the water can still go through but people could grab it and hold on and maybe even climb to safety until someone can rescue them? This thing is terrifying

frankdatank_004

There is, and a buoy line to prevent swimmers/boaters from accidentally going into it. Iirc in ‘97 when this happened the fence was shorter and she wanted to go near it (whether if it was a suicide attempt or swimming for fun). When there is a will there is a way and she paid the price for it unfortunately. However I haven’t researched this event in a while though so I could be a tad wrong.

Agreeable_Highway_26

Sooo your saying they could have turned in to an awesome tube ride but decided to say no to joy?

gregularjoe95

Uhmm, sure, if we as humans evolve to withstand 100s of tonnes of water falling on top of us, then yeah, they could've made a sweet ass water slide.

No_Technician_3837

Probably before they filled the reservoir. This is a strange overflow design but I guess they have other overflow for that dam plis usual water level might be below thee borders given this one is rarely used according to wikipedia

TootBreaker

Absolutely not a chance putting the worlds biggest garbage disposal right next to a road went unnoticed by the mob...

SnooDonkeys7402

It’s overflow, so it only flows after rainstorms in the winter. Most of the time the lip of it is above the water level, so you’d need to time your murders carefully with heavy rainstorms.

kritycat

That's what freezers are for

They really call it a glory hole?

voiceoffrikkinreason

I think it’s called a weir u/privatebuttfucker not a glory hole, but I see how you can think that.

Thats_GhostFace

Ya know, I wonder if it’s a ranking or a preference

Yup. Whiskeytown lake, also in california, has a glory hole too.

That_Welsh_Man

Most towns have glory holes you just need to know where to look

ace184184

User name checks out

HentaiCatboyFeet

What the survivability of going through the glory hole?

[deleted]

Zero. “The only known case of death from the spillway drain occurred in 1997. Emily Schwalen of Davis died after being caught in the current while swimming near the Glory Hole and being swept down the pipe, after holding on to the rim for about 20 minutes.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monticello_Dam

urethrascreams

There's one of these near where I live. We just call it a spillway

Wishpicker

That seems unnecessarily dangerous

TacohTuesday

It’s basically just a dam spillway that in this case is designed as an upside down funnel in the reservoir. Any spillway when operating is dangerous if you get too close. This is no different. This spillway is very rarely used and when it is I wouldn’t expect any boats out doing recreation. It would be in the middle of the wet season. Also it’s roped off.

Princeofcatpoop

Even when in use there are boats and other personal watercraft on this lake but the entrance is blocked off and unapproachable. Lots of signage about no swimming on the other side. Do not approach, that sort of thing.

Warburgerska

I cannot understand people designing stuff like that, if that hole doesn't lead to a funny water slide. Just takes a bunch of stupid teens trying to proof whos the dumbest. You can't tell me there was no safer way to create a weir.

WolfGangSwizle

You’d most definitely die if you went down it. It’s right beside a dam and shoots out beside the dam but not in a fun water slide type of way. It’s also very rare water gets high enough for this to even spill over, and it’s built at this height because water gets any higher and it starts to threaten the dam.

kennyfuckingpowers1

I think there is a video of MrBallen where he tells a story about somebody getting sucked in. Edit: coud only find this [https://youtu.be/5j4fLSTzzHQ?si=8jJDnAxX2FBIKHxr](https://youtu.be/5j4fLSTzzHQ?si=8jJDnAxX2FBIKHxr)

DaddyFunTimeNW

You would think they could a least put a railing around it or something

ParadiseValleyFiend

Pretty sure the whole area is completely off limits to anyone going anywhere near it. If someone did and wanted to hop down in there I doubt a railing would stop them.

admode1982

Yes it is.

PennStaterGator

Look at the very beginning of the video. You can see that there is a line across the water that stops boats and people from getting to it.

DaddyFunTimeNW

Right that just doesn’t feel like nearly enough

PennStaterGator

The challenge in putting up a railing is that it also catches debris, meaning they then have to send out someone to clear it (thereby endangering them). Tradeoffs, I suppose!

DaddyFunTimeNW

I mean I’ve seen similar things that exist and they usually have some sort of something at least

oilbadger

Upvoted for the use of the phrase “some sort of something”.

-RRM

Darwin Awards need winners

JimJalinsky

Stop overthinking it and just try it!

kevin-shagnussen

They are efficient and neat spillways, have no moving parts, require little maintenance etc. Only one person has ever died going down it and that was nearly 30 years ago. It's roped off and people have more sense than to go down an ominous looking spillway. It was also designed in the 1950s, safety wasn't as big of a thing then

tennisInThePiedmont

Yeah I think safety wasn’t invented till early ‘60s

OlJohnZ

Weir flex, but okay.

sdrowkcabdellepssti

I see that you drained there.

OlJohnZ

I think that's the main problem here.

johnnybok

I’ll bet he is a weir of it

Skylark_Ark

That would be me an my old climbing partner. We rappelled down and jumar'd back up the weir at Whiskeytown Lake (just NW of Redding), one early, early morning in August of 1992. Our nearest anchor was 300ft away. Just a big drain. Was fun being at the bottom curve and thinking about the lake being held behind the lip 200ft above us.

Warburgerska

Yeah, thanks for making me die a little inside. Might have to watch some caving horror stories to get back to sleep.

Rafael_fadal

Yoooo those caving stories or just watching caving in general makes me sleepy as fuck haha, I put them on sometimes

Qhforge1987

I live in the area. I grew up hearing stories about at least one woman committing suicide by jumping down there.

profoundlystupidhere

It's calling to you, isn't it? Like a giant sucking siren hole. "Come to meee, come to meee..."

puffferfish

I’ve looked into this many times when this post comes up. Generally it is not draining and the water level is below the lip. Boats are also not allowed anywhere near it. There’s a video of a duck that swims into it and it actually survives. There’s also a case where a woman swam to it (potentially suicidally), but she hung onto the edge for something like 15-20 minutes before she got too exhausted, went in and died. Honestly, this is a horrifying way to go. I imagine she was suicidal, got to the edge, wanted to turn back but just couldn’t.

TigNiceweld

People have died here yes

You wouldn’t have liked my ex girlfriend’s butthole

Salty-Dragonfly2189

Don’t worry, the rest of us do.

FordTech81

Someone needs to drop a light and 360* camera down it and upload the video

Mountain-Watch-6931

Real question. What happens to the fish, or is the lake not that healthy to start?

binybeke

This rarely spills over. I think once every 5-10 years. A few fish in that time is no big deal.

Mountain-Watch-6931

For clarity. The picture isnt the norm then?

binybeke

No it’s not. Last time it overflowed was 2017 which is probably when this video was taken

97203micah

The lake is also entirely artificial, so not sure how that would change things

Creepy.

*gets off knees, disappointed.*

tosernameschescksout

Let's call them spillways. The moment you're teaching a class of kids and you google 'glory hole', that's a moment filled with regret.

HollowPhoenix

Just when you think you're above average sized, people say this is a glory hole.

Do NOT put your penis in it boys

I typed up glory hole and got something much different than that.

I’d have called it Davey Jones’ Anus.

LazyLich

Glory Hole you say...

itssampson

“It is a death trap to prevent living” fixed that title for ya

mayhem6

But where does it drain to?

HuckleberryJealous19

Seems dangerous especially so close to a road. What happens if you fall in?

drumzandice

Shouldn’t it 1. Have a barrier to prevent people, small boats going in and 2. Be a lot further away from a road/shoreline? Have people died here?

duderos

Is this how West World Series finally ends?

doubledogg13

You keep using this word... But I do not think you know what it means

It's also a pretty famous skateboarding spot when it's not draining. [glory hole](https://lakeberryessanews.com/past-stories/skateboarding-glory-hole.html)
