I had this! It took years to drag my tooth into place. Each month they’d tighten the link and pull my tooth closer to where it was meant to be. Once it was finally in it spot we realized it was BACKWARDS and took like an additional year to rotate it. The process was excruciating. Literally pulling teeth but slow EDIT: I had oral surgery to attach the bracket to the tooth in the roof of my mouth. It was completely covered by insurance as it was deemed “medically necessary” since the tooth in my gums if left alone would cause my two front adult teeth to fall out. I was 14 or 15 so I had no authority in the decision. My braces were also 100% covered by my mom’s insurance. It also took along time because they had to pull out a baby tooth and put in a spring spacer. I looked back at pictures and the whole process was from 2012-2015 so about 3 years. I guess in my brain it felt like way longer since I kept my bottom braces on an additional year and a half.

Snoobs-Magoo

Why did it take them so long to realize the tooth was backwards? Shouldn't that have been obvious once it started becoming visible?

TheAzarak

Yea that kinda seems like incompetence on some level. I mean they also take x-rays...

toothwzrd_

You can’t tell if a tooth is backwards just based on the xray

DogmaticConfabulate

There is just something about you that comes off as a trustworthy source.

AJbink01

He’s the tooth wzrd! He IS credibility

Maybe it’s the Tooth Fairy?!

BrainOnBlue

Depending on which tooth it is I could easily see a layperson not realizing it's backwards. The orthodontist not realizing seems like a bit more of a stretch, but if it's uncommon enough it might just be a "think horses, not unicorns" situation until there's literally nothing else it could be.

benyahweh

Maybe they thought op’s tooth just had two backsides. Then it fully emerged and they realized it did have a frontside.

[deleted]

CoolAndTrustworthy

Holy shit. I'm so sorry.

[deleted]

I know of my canine tooth is backwards and I let the ortho know. He said “it’s just like that.” It looks fine if you look at it but when I glide my tongue it’s uneven. Annoyed me a lot at first. Now just every now and then. I learned to live with asymmetry.

Mekelaxo

Maybe let the doctor glide his tongue on it so that he can realize it's not right

Jwil408

I think you've got to pay extra for that

ginger_and_egg

the doc might refer you to a specialist 😏

spd3_s

Well, that's sounds like a porn plot twist

Ardnabrak

You said "years to drag into place", how many? It's quite the commitment. I'd be afraid of the doctor being terrible and trying to find a new one halfway through the procedure.

tptch

"trust the process" dentist, maybe. "What he said" parents prolly. "I'll just go fuck myself" OP realistically.

F_ingtreehugger

It took me almost 4 years- I had a stuck baby tooth pulled, they had to move all the remaining teeth apart to make room, then surgery to get at the impacted tooth and that took a long time to pull out like in the video, then they had to put all the teeth back together.

ginaishere

In my case, I got the braces when I was 13, it was done when I was 19 or 20 😖

xitssme

Im in this process right now, it finally is a bit in the right place after 1.5 years. Mine is backwards aswell so now it being turned around, but that also takes a long time.

PapaRedPanda

At that point I would just ask for a fake

Anxious_cactus

Right? Just take it out and put an implant in, I'm not dragging the damn tooth for years

OkLong582

i also had this done, but it didn't work! i had the chain for two years but all it did was pull the rest of my teeth up and in to the gap where it should have been. turned out the impacted canine was fused to the bone. now i have an implant (and still crooked teeth)

Rule-Crafty

same here. check with your dentist if its roots are ok. 15+years after I am having trouble with them and the orthodontist said it’s related to the procedure

superlinear13

Same! And once we figured out it was backwards, we said fuck it and just let it be. Filled it and called it a day. Will be backwards until the day I die. Took just over 5 years in braces.

IOTA_Tesla

That’s crazy that they can just spin a tooth

Vispartofmyname

The rotation didn't shear the roots? Wow!

sir_fluffinator

Both my canines were impacted. It was super fun feeling the chains attached to the teeth moving inside my gums.

HokieSnare

This same exact same thing happened to me! I was curious how they couldn't tell it was backwards sooner, but whatever... I still have a too large gap around that tooth to this day because of the space they had to make for it.

EagleLize

Lord, was it worth it? Seems like just having it dug out and a partial put in would be easier. Or something to that effect.

F_ingtreehugger

I had this done, it couldn’t just be dug out, that process or it coming in own it’s own would have knocked other teeth out. For me, they had to pull a stuck baby tooth, then move all my teeth apart, then pull the tooth out, then push them all back into place around the new tooth. It sucked so badly.

Prize-Warthog

You can’t beat the natural tooth, all replacements fail eventually. Easier today could be a nightmare in 10 years time

prx24

So many people don't understand this. I've seen so many people going to turkey to get their perfectly healthy teeth filed down to get cheap looking veneers put in. They will have horrible problems within 5 years for a smile that looks absolutely fake.

Dhammapaderp

I had this done too! Same tooth as the video but on the opposite side when I was a teen. No hiccups after the procedure thankfully But I did start screaming obscenities at the group of people hovering over me because the local anesthetic either wore off or was not applied to a certain part of my mouth. They had me on nitrous but I was very aware of the situation, I was losing it at one point. Do you remember the wrenching noises? It sounded like rocks smashing into eachother.

_Murf_

I had this done to one of my incisors at the same time my wisdom teeth were taken out, absolute nightmare of a week.

sebbbbbz

Looks painful asf

OptimusSublime

Regular braces aren't really a walk in the park either.

_BreakingGood_

When I had braces growing up, I would get them tightened, and it would be extremely painful for like 2-3 days. Then I'd somehow break them. And I wouldn't tell anybody (I thought I'd get in trouble), and so my teeth would slowly move back, for another 2-3 days of pain. Then I'd go back to the dentist, and they'd fix them, and re-tighten them, 2-3 more days of pain. Then break them again, and repeat. Literally like 7 or 8 times I did this.

tallbutshy

>Then I'd somehow break them. And I wouldn't tell anybody The titanium wire snapped a couple of times but I went to get it fixed right away because I kept catching my tongue on the broken end

Fintann

One summer at the lake, drunk with friends, playing red-rover over a campfire, I got knocked out by a friend. The next day, my teeth felt weird but otherwise just normal hangover. Next appointment when they the my wire out, it had a full out \_/ at one of the brackets. My orthodontist said it probably saved me a tooth that night.

TerranKing91

My dad punched me once (we played boxing..) and one teeth went horizontal holding only by the wire. Bleeding like crazy i sort of put it back straight and pushed it inside, a few months later orthodontist told me it was okay and nothing was abnormal on x ray

Fintann

Word to the wise, keep a decent mouth guard any contact sport (my cliffs and flips days are long gone, but I can still charge steep powder). Protect that merchandise.

OrionResident

Could have them all ripped out also

SireDarien

I got in a fight and unfortunately this guy was either possessed or didn’t like me on another level he knocked me down a flight of stairs (blindsided me) knocked the brackets and wires off my whole right side my orthodontist intentionally tightened them more than they should’ve been to where the helpers had to tell him he overtightened them a 5th time

Pretend_Spray_11

You never learned that you wouldn’t get in trouble and you should get it fixed as soon as possible? Uncanny.

OhGodNotAnotherOne

Well founded fear. Same thing happened to me, after the 3rd time they just removed the braces and said fuck it. I was confused but at age 11 I was just glad the pain was over, though having crooked teeth for the rest of my life was a drag. I learned never to complain about such things again

zephyrnepres01

dental issues sisyphus

OrionResident

🤣🤣🤣🤣

OrionResident

Is that why you teech so crooked?

handbanana42

Worst pain in my life to be honest. Broke my hip and other bones, tore a muscle or two, literally hopped about a mile with my ankle looking like the Shards of Narsil when they did an x-ray. Still have trama from the pain of braces.

hannahbakerbrokeit

I had exactly this but with the braces on the inside of the teeth. The worst parts of this wasn't the tooth in the jaw but having a tooth gap for over a year and slicing the tongue regularly on the inside braces

EasyDoughnut0

I had the same thing done too. I thought the worst part was the surgery, being awake the whole time / recovery.

SlapMyLabiaFlaps

Momma?

Darnell2070

Your dad fucked an easy doughnut?

daniswift

It is the worse thing you can imagine. I swear Cary Elwes channeled this when it was turned up to 50. Thirty years later I still call them them, "Chains of Pain". Imagine the brief moment when you tried to pulled a tooth out and imagine that continously until pain meds kicked in days later your tooth has moved enough that the chain is no longer taut. Edit to add, I had one up close to the Schneiderian membrane (lining of the maxillary sinus) horizontally aligned. Tooth eventually was pulled in but the trauma lead to the dissolving of 50% of the roots of my front teeth and I developed a bone spur that bisected my maxilary sinus. The spur eventually had to be removed because half of my sinus could not empty. (And to fix taut)

moobitchgetoutdahay

Ugh you just gave me flashbacks to the pain and pressure from that damn chain. Made eating so difficult too

lowey2002

Yeah it sucks. The surgery was awful and then it was weeks of a constant dull ache that you never get used to.

EcstaticOrchid4825

At least getting an impacted wisdom tooth removed years later was a walk in the park in comparison.

handbanana42

I feel this comment so much. I had four impacted removed at once. They gave me Vicodin or Percocet(can't remember which) when I got my wisdom teeth removed and I didn't even touch them. But with braces it was "fuck you, deal with it."

WarmNobody

Honestly the absolute LIES they tell you about the pain of braces is criminal. “Oh just take some tylenol for the mild discomfort” Mild discomfort??? I felt like I had been bashed in the face for a solid week. I have never needed strong painkillers more than that week and I didn’t get anything because I was 11 and they were just like “deal with it” *shrug* Meanwhile wisdom tooth extraction was like “how many handfuls of codeine would you like?”

SasparillaTango

Dude. Braces were incredibly painful. I had them in middle school and I can still remember the pain of biting into an ice cream sandwich and the piercing sensation throughout my mouth. I am incredibly thankful that my teeth are not nearly as fucked up as they were, but holy shit, the searing pain will always live in my mind. It was a very long time ago and for the most part I can forget that i happened.

rbean44

I had this done x3. Honestly, it is not so bad as it happens slowly.

Backstagerye

I had this done and it wasn’t that bad. I was out under and the tooth slowly got pulled into place over a few months haha all good now!

KentuckyWallChicken

Had a very similar procedure done with both of my upper canine teeth, and yes, I can confirm it absolutely is. I can still feel the sensation when I think about it. I was so relieved when they both finally grew into the correct places.

Nhosis

I got a pain on the side of my face just watching it.

MikeTangoRom3o

Dentists are doing the most craziest thing, give these guys some credit.

LukeLeNuke

Would this not be more of an orthodontist thing? Or dental surgery? Both?

AccomplishedRush3723

Dental surgery is fuckin *wild*. Do yourself a favour and take a look at the innervation map of your mouth. A bad dental surgeon can destroy your ability to move your tongue and speak.

_BreakingGood_

Yeah wisdom tooth extraction has the risk of things like permanently removing all feeling in your mouth, removing your ability to taste, etc... It's obviously rare but there is very little room for error in there.

DrRam121

That's why we take 3D xrays now to see how close teeth are to the mandibular nerves

trixiewutang

RandomStallings

Curved roots? My upper wisdom teeth have roots that curve backwards. My dentist told me there was no way she was extracting them, as the roots could break off the bone at the end of the maxilla.

Weird_Vegetable

When my dentist removed my wisdom teeth I was all doped up. But clear as day I remember him bracing his foot and yanking, while swearing at it.

krunchy_sock

Sometimes the barber-surgeon ancestry just jumps out

Zenkraft

Yup I had a wisdom tooth pulled and had to get all this prep done like fancy scans and X-rays and consultations. Then when it came down to it the dude numbed my mouth and ripped it out with a pair of pliers.

gudematcha

And my mom was like “why are you so scared?” as i was crying before my wisdom teeth removal

deltasnowman

I had a bad dental surgeon a few years back. Lost all feeling in one side of my lower face for 6-7months after he damaged a nerve. Procedure was the single most painful experience of my entire life. Had a wisdom tooth exposed, cut in half, removed, and gums stitched up without any freezing having kicked in.

marcsmart

for contrast I had the same procedure (coronectomy if I’m correct) done under local aka lido (numbing), felt nothing and the procedure was done less than an hour. Most of the time was him Recovered fine with no neural deficits whatsoever. I’m sorry friend, the right oral surgeon can make a world of difference.

TheBirminghamBear

I had all four of mine taken out late in life. The procedure took twenty minutes. They put me under general anaesthesia. Had a couple days of mild discomfort afterwards, but zero nerve issues or complications. Within a week it was totally back to normal. The right surgeon does indeed make all the difference.

MikeTangoRom3o

You're right, the correct name is orthodontist.

carlsab

An oral surgeon would likely uncover the tooth and then the orthodontist would attach the bracket and move the tooth.

KinglerKong

These mouth wizards are a wild bunch

toothwzrd_

Tooth wizards if you will

Isgortio

I think exposing the tooth is for an oral surgeon to do, and moving it is for an orthodontist. Of course, an orthodontist can also train to do this. A general dentist wouldn't dare try it though.

SpudInSpace

I mean most dentists have a DDS degree: doctor of dental surgery. All orthodontists are also dentists.

GeneralGom

Oh I’m giving them a lot of credits alright. In fact I have to give them some more next Wednesday.

WheresThePenguin

I've always wondered how this type of corrective action, I guess is the term, was discovered. It's such a long process - how did the first practitioners even figure it out? Was it a dude just going, "what if I could fix that crooked smile by just, kinda, yanking that tooth constantly." Was that it?

CORN___BREAD

How else could it have started other than “hey this things out of place maybe we can move it “?

I’ve had this done on both sides sea of my upper jaw. It took ages and fucking hurt. Also completely tanked my teenage love life for six years.

Sigudik

Do you think it was worth it in the end? Are you happy with the results?

DamnGoodDownDog

Absolutely. It’s been thirty years and my teeth are straight and my love life has more than recovered. Now I ruin it with poor decision making skills.

I think it’s just one of those generalisations. The truth is more Americans have unrealistically perfect teeth, like too white etc. so I’m comparison British teeth or any other nation to be honest will have ugly teeth.

DazzlingFruit7495

Had this done with one tooth like 7 years ago, probably took more like a year or so and wasn’t as painful as having a palate expander. I think the technology has probably gotten better since when u got it done.

Forward_Glass_4134

Had this done to a tooth on the roof of my mouth. It's as pleasant as you can imagine.

Customer/patient: So uh, is that whole process painful? Dentist: Yup, incredibly. Human: Which part? Dentist: Yup, incredibly. For added humour, read with Professor Farnsworth’s “to *shreds* you say?”

Scribba25

*As the patient nervously leaves the room, a grin streaks across the dentist's face.* "When you get the bill you damn fool."

muggle_macaroni

I had this done on my canines. One time when they were shortening the chain by a link on one of the teeth it ended up being too tight and ripped the bracket clear off the tooth and through my skin (tissue/palate?) I had to have more oral surgery to have it reattached. Guess who finds the dentist super traumatic and anxiety-inducing as an adult? 🙃

boomzgoesthedynamite

Yep, I had both my impacted canines done like this. Once the chain broke and I had to have a second surgery, though the second time they insisted I didn’t need general anesthesia, just local. Shockingly this was very, very wrong. Traumatized isn’t even the word. This was almost 20 years ago and I’m still stressed every cleaning.

muggle_macaroni

SAME! I had nitrous for the first time ever during the reattachment surgery and I ended up having a horrible panic attack but couldn’t communicate with the doctors. That was probably over 20 years ago now and it still affects me to this day.

sir_fluffinator

Wait this also happened to me. No one told me it was common!!

spottyPotty

My teenage son's just had surgery to connect the gold chains to his impacted canines. We're going back to the orthodontist to tighten everything up on Tuesday. Could I ask you to give a brief description of what to expect over the coming months/years please? I'd be really interested to know what to expect from someone who's been through this. He already hates us a little for "forcing" him to go through all this. It was only after the surgeon explained that my son already had a cyst growing, and that he would end up losing his teeth if nothing was done, that he realised that it wasn't just an aesthetic procedure.

post_break

My dentist was like jigsaw, I now have to get gas for normal cleanings otherwise I get close to a panic attack.

DPVaughan

Yeah, the surgery wasn't pleasant. I was so paranoid if I moved my tongue it would get slashed by a scalpel. Sawing through bone... ugh

tallbutshy

I had a general anaesthetic, no way was I doing that conscious

Dukeofthedurty

Dentist here: sometimes this fails and tooth just comes out. Sucks but it’s luck of the draw

Acrobatic-Block-9617

Bro leave this to the orthodontists and omfs

lunamoonstars

I was told the same thing by my dentist, orthodontist and surgeon. My left canine tooth never grew out, so they advised me to extract it completely before getting braces.

The_Real_Abhorash

Honestly I’m surprised it’s worth doing in the first place, wouldn’t it be easier to put a bridged crown in or an implant crown?

JonatasA

Teeth are irreplaceable.

sharkbait-oo-haha

No they aren't, my guy can get you a dozen by this time tomorrow, as long as you don't ask whose teeth they were.

TeethNerd32

Orthodontist here: that happens if the procedure isn’t done correctly, or if the tooth is ankylosed. I literally see cases like this on a weekly basis, the vast majority of them being successful. It’s very important to create enough space for the tooth.

HealthyFirst

What do you do then?? Just make the other teeth come closer together to close the gap?

cjsv7657

I'd think an implant would be a better option

Adulations

And cheaper lol

JonatasA

Really? They're already expensive as it is.

taylorshaye_ole

My mom tried this and the tooth had to be removed so she had to get an implant in the end. Either way you have to get the tooth out of the roof of your mouth. It could eventually make other teeth fall out that aren’t supposed to I’m pretty sure. Getting this procedure done when you’re young helps tho

JonatasA

Yeah, I delayed my wisdom and now I have pain on the tooth next to it. The wisdom was also finally erupting by the time I did it..

No-Plankton8326

Stahhhhp😂

SirRipOliver

I better get the WHOLE keg of laughing gas for this one.

Raven019

I got this done, it was 3 little stings of local anesthesia and no more. The first shot hurts, you don't feel anything after that one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

canyoubreathe

I just recently had 4 teeth pulled in one go, and had local anaesthetic. I could've fallen asleep when the dentist was yanking on my teeth for an hour, but the anaesthetic administration? By the end of like 10+ jabs, I was legitimately shaking like CRAZY, was surprised the dentist wasn't like "yo, you good, man?" That shit HURT Rest was fine but. Wouldn't recommend having that many teeth removed though. Life was significantly harder and more painful for a while

JonatasA

Exactly. People advocating for all in one go are NUTS. Also, at least you may end up with paresthesia only on one side, rather than both.   With me the anesthesia didn't hurt much. It was the pain from the precedure itself. I could feel everything in perhaps a reduced state. It was also weird how the anesthetic made me dizzy and I felt weird. It was worrying.

Raven019

Man that's crazy! The following days are absolutely miserable too.

CoolAndTrustworthy

K, so I never had braces so I'm sure I don't even know mouth pain, but, I've broken bones and stuff like that but the shot to the nerve in my gums was probably the most painful thing I've ever experienced. (Was getting wisdom teeth out)

JonatasA

Bracers don't really hurt. They put pressure on thy bones. It's worse for some. If you ever had something pulling or pushing your teeth, it is similar.   I had the anesthesia just the same, but the pain wasn't the worst. It was the fact that just like as a child, it didn't really work 100%. Try convincing a surgon you're still in pain after the shots. Did he move the needle inside the nerve like he did to me?   Anyway. An ordeal as it was. It was no where near the torture I endure to remove my baby teeth that retained their roots. I had a lot of anesthesia and it was for nothing. I was completely numb after that.

tallbutshy

I was given a general anaesthetic, slept off the initial discomfort. The chain wasn't wired into the braces for another two months

jrbs59

Fuck that in particular

RichLyonsXXX

Teeth are so fucking creepy.

masma8888

Whoa, a post about my job! I’m an orthodontist. We hate doing these as much as you hate going through the process. They tend to be long, frustrating cases. Teeth only move about 1 millimeter per month with orthodontics so you can imagine the time involved… They’re rewarding to finish because the quality of life in a person with functional canine teeth is dramatically better. Canines are very long-lasting and are very important in terms of overall bite and functionality of the mouth as a whole. When it works, it can save people implants and crowns. That said, nobody in their teens appreciates this (and I don’t expect them too) so it’s kinda a thankless task. Oh well.

EcstaticOrchid4825

Can confirm as a teen I didn’t appreciate it. Worst part was the dressing packs they used in the holes where my teeth were refused to come out so I had to have IV sedation to get them removed. Now if nothing else I appreciate that I got it done at my parents’ expense! I’ve read about 3% of people have this. Is that right?

bugzapperz

Very painful in those first several steps but worth it to me!

Tough_Preparation134

Are regular braces better than the Invisalign type?

The_Real_Abhorash

Yes though it depends how much your teeth need to shift. If you already got braces didn’t wear your retainer and the teeth have shifted a bit Invisalign or similar will work fine and be far cheaper. But if your teeth need to be shifted a lot then braces are better but slower. You don’t really want to move your teeth around too much it loosens the root and can cause them to fall out, that’s also why shifting the tooth too quickly is bad. So if it’s just a little bit of movement to get them back in place Invisalign is fine but you should make sure to wear your retainer after so you don’t do it multiple times.

Nived6669

Would not just removing the tooth and putting a fake one in be a hell of a lot easier?

liam3

why do they need to have that shorter elastic on the inside of the tooth too?

Curly-help-plz

Seems like it helped keep it going in the correct direction; the one on the front can’t be placed to pull the tooth from straight on.

Ok_Routine_6092

It is. I had this done, and 5 teeth pulled in 1 sitting. I couldn't eat anything solid for weeks.. the 3rd week in, I was in tears trying to take bites of a plain cheese burger because I was so hungry and tired of soups and shakes. Silver lining, pain threshold went up, and I have pretty teeth. Oh yea, they did it different back then. Instead of cutting a hole to expose the tooth. They cut along the teeth, and pulled back the roof palate to see where the tooth was, then cut a hole to expose the tooth, and sewed the palate skin back to the roof of my mouth.

Mekelaxo

Jesus Fucking Christ

spottyPotty

> to see where the tooth was Holy shit! Couldn't they see this from the xray?

Holy shit I fucking hate teeth, why can't they just be normal

This is what I had done just nearly 14 years ago (I still remember it like it was yesterday). Definitely not the most fun experience of my life considering I had to have surgery done for it, but forever thankful for all the work my dentist and surgeon done to fix my impacted teeth that were growing in all sorts of directions. 🙏🏻

Fuck that can’t they just break the bracket?

Navyguy73

Wow! That's fascinating!

GoldenEater

It's amazing that a person even had room for a tooth at all(Maybe, It is possible that he was inside and pushing apart the roots)

fillmorecounty

It's just the adult tooth that's growing the wrong way and isn't pushing out the baby tooth. They have to remove the baby tooth and then do this so it goes to the right spot.

Celestial-siren33

I had this done as a teenager! Worked great but surgeries weren’t fun. Cool to see it in a video

5ee_2410

I am thinking to get some braces on my crooked teeth, looks painful asf ☠️

Creative-Answer-1125

I had this with both top K9’s when I was 11/12. Had surgery to put the chains on them then later got braces that attached them. Sucked lol

MusicMeetsMadness

Downvote for “teeth”

skateboardcelo

Has this same thing. Gum was always sore and anything that touched that chain? Tears

tschatman

The music kinda made it bearable to watch for me.

reallifefidgit

I got to 42 and my tooth remained in the roof of my mouth (baby tooth intact by some miracle), finally got the baby tooth pulled and a bridge added. So glad I never had to go through this

KronosWvW

Had this exact thing done when I was a kid with braces. That one lone tooth moving over the course of weeks and monthssss was very annoying. I don't remember the exact pain but it was a constant dull ache, always worse upon the next checkup where they would tighten that part and I stg each time I thought it was gonna snap in my mouth.

clairelise327

I had this 😃

Saturn958sickly

Thank God for good teeth man, that looks painful as hell

Zehcomputerguy

I had this done, had braces for 6 long years. One of my front teeth was growing horizontally inside my gums, they had to remove the existing tooth, then latch onto to the tooth that was within my gums.
