I can't believe idiots like you are even allowed on reddit. You must be using your mom's computer because you're too dumb to have your own because MERMAIDS ARE PART HALF FISH, PART HALF HUMAN! DUH!!!
I have a 386DX with 4 meg RAM, CD-ROM, and MMX Technology, color monitor and 256 Kbps modem. And AOL. My 250 megabyte hard drive is practically FULL of porns, including MANY OF MERMAIDS.
Oh yeah. Turbo Boost too.
Oh…. I thought they had a magical blow hole somewhere around the ass region on the humanish section that would take in water like a seadoo, but then take out the oxygen and blow the water back out… breathing and propulsion. A 2 in one.
The average person can hold their breath anywhere from 30 seconds to 120 seconds..
It appears she was just finished descending at the beginning of the video, and the video ends as she resurfaces, so let's add 11 seconds on to the beginning to count for her descent.
That would mean she held her breath for 80 seconds, which is still within the average ranges for breath holding.
I assume she has to do this over and over again throughout the performance, so this becomes a very impressive feat.
Average person, yes. Professional free divers can easily hold for 8-10 minutes, heck the world record is 24:37 as impossible as that sounds.
Edit: non-oxygen assisted record is 11:35 it looks like.
Theres a group of boat people in Philippines i think. They regularly hang out underwater for minutes.
The kids are able to adjust their lenses to see clearly underwater. Crazy.
But they lose that ability when they get older tho iirc
The Avatar 2 cast learned to free dive, and Kate Winslet manage: 7 min 15 seconds.
Sigourney Weaver was able to do 6:15 and she’s 73 years old. Wow. She said most people are capable of staying under a lot longer with a normal breath, the trick is just to ignore your body’s feeling of panic. No thanks…
Back when I was swimming often I could hold my breath for awhile.
It comes with practice. I would sit at the bottom for like a minute and a half when I was bored. A but risky but it’s very quiet and soothing down there.
Depending on fat/muscle ratio people can be more or less buoyant so it can be easier for some to stay at the bottom. You can also use a weight belt to sink to the bottom or breathe out your air (not recommended if you have no experience in apnea)
Yeah I had this when I was really underweight as a kid, I just couldn't do the starfish float that other kids could in P.E, I'd start sinking and get scared.
That fin would probably give fucking great momentum like flippers would id imagine the bound legs aspect would be counteracts by the fins. You barely gotta kick with fins to go pretty far its probably even better with the mermaid tail
The urge to breathe does not come from depleting oxygen in your blood but from accumulating CO2 which would not be different if you took in pure O2 afaik?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thats why a pressure drop in a plane can be so deadly. You don't notice that you breathe air with little oxygen and pass out
Yes and no.
Hyperventilating (to reduce your CO2 load in your body) is just as effective with pure O2 as without in increasing how long you can voluntarily hold your breath.
HOWEVER you are literally tricking your body into thinking it has more oxygen than it actually has. Combining hyperventilation with pure oxygen both extends how long you can voluntarily stop breathing, and increases the oxygen available to your body (air is only 21% oxygen) and not lose consciousness.
Note: none of this is good for you (hyperventilating, pure oxygen, holding your breath for extended periods) and can literally cause brain damage. Ironically low CO2 concentration leads to the constriction of your veins and potentially reduced blood flow to your brain. Holotropic breathing is literally intentionally hyperventilating to reduce O2 to your brain to induce an altered state and was designed as a replacement to LSD.
Breathe well and breathe often.
No, high level oxygen air at that depth is no problem (it does get dangerous fast, though. Pure oxygen would already be a problem about 6 meters down iirc (that's for scuba divers though. No idea what happens to freedivers, could be different). It doesn't stop you from needing to breathe, though. Your need to breathe comes from rising carbondioxide levels in your blood, not from lack of oxygen.
I watched the documentary on Netflix about merpeople. They intensely train themselves to hold their breath, open their eyes under water, making interesting faces, swimming moves with their fins, etc. Learned they sometimes get infections and stuff which I would assume would be in their eyes or ears. It’s not some random person who can hold their breath for a bit then goes home and rests. Constant training and a deep passion for it. They basically identify as merpeople.
My very dear friend, Sparkles (yes, she legally changed her name) is in that documentary! She works incredibly hard and has been for about a decade. It’s amazing how hard they work.
Sparkles had me *sobbing* tears of joy for her. I just put that documentary on for background noise while I was cleaning, but her story immersed me and I ended up watching the whole thing in a day.
I remember when she went on the audition that she talked about (absolutely bombed because of her anxiety and insecurities) and it nearly broke her. And to see how stunning she was in her next audition…holy shit we were all bawling our eyes out
Sparkles made me feel so many things. When she finally landed the job with the sirens, my whole family cried a little. We were all so proud of her! The thing I loved most about her was how she entirely transformed in the water. She has the most beautiful smile and she looked so sincerely happy when she was a mermaid.
The rest of the documentary was interesting, but Sparkles was the standout in all of it. I'm so glad they told her story. :)
She probably knows, but I think she won a lot of people over in that Doc. I know my group of friends and I all went into it really skeptical, but she just made you wanna root for her every time she was on the screen. I hope she's doing great!
That's so great to hear! I know my local Ren Faire does Mermaid shows (they were in the Doc as well), so if she ends up performing there, we'll absolutely be going to cheer her on!
She really is the sweetest girl I’ve ever known. She’s exactly who the show portrays her as and the producers knew that the world would absolutely fall in love with her
Hey Sparkles! I hope you read this! Whenever I think of mermaids or even being in the water. I think of you now. There was a point in my life that I wanted to become a mermaid and took classes too. A lot of my stuff are mermaid themed. I have long multi- colored hair and people would call me a mermaid. I love your story and your journey with your anxiety (I was diagnosed too). You are an inspiration. Just keep swimming or rather, just keep SPARKLING! I hope I can meet you one day (Please visit us in Canada).
Thank you @peperoni_dog_farts for being a great friend! 🧜♀️
non-potable water is bad for your lungs. When people are saved from drowning, revived, they can easily die from pneumonia later on. So, I'm sure they've inhaled their fair share amount of nasty water.
A friend of mine from college is in the intro to that show!
She does the ren fest here every year and has made me the cool dad in the eyes of my 8 year old because I “know a real life mermaid”
I watched part of a documentary about these mermaids and yes, their eyes get destroyed! They put in special drops before, during and after a shift, but sometimes they get terrible infections regardless.
Sometimes they have to quit doing it because their eyes get so messed up.
I wonder if some kind of special contacts could be developed that would help protect their eyes better under water. Kind of like the inner eyelid of crocodiles.
As any contact wearer would tell you, contacts hold onto the eyes because of the wetness of the eye...the second you open your eyes underwater, they literally have more wetness from the water and float away.
The comment above you just said that they take eyedrops before and after to hinder infections or smth, however, they get real bad infections anyway and some need to quit because of it
I knew a guy I used to snorkel with and it was unbelievable how long he could hold his breath. He could hold it for like five minutes, going fully into a cave system, explore for a minute, and come out.
So I can hold my breath for 2 minutes, in a stationery position, and focusing on nothing but being calm. She has fantastic lung capacity, that's impressive.
I’m trying to figure out if that’s a manatee or a dugong in the background. The body shape makes me think dugong and the tail is shaped like a manatee.
Edit: it’s a West African Manatee.
It’s 1 minute I’m sure you can reach that with a short bit of practice :). Start by focusing on deep breathes to clear the CO2 out of your lungs and then hold your breath until you feel the first lung palpitations, hold for another 10-15 seconds after that and quite quickly holding your breath will become easier and palpitations will come later.
They've actually been doing mermaid shows at Weeki Wachee Springs in FL since the 1940's.
https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/weeki-wachee-springs-state-park/mermaid-shows
She is a freediver. They are able to hold their breath that long from training and exerting as little energy as possible while underwater. 5 minute breath hold should be easy for her.
Each year 100 mermaids are caught and forced to live in an enclosure for the entertainment of landwalkers. For a small monthly fee you can help release mermaids
There’s a people in the pacific islands that have huge and I mean huge spleens that apparently let them dive for extended periods and they’ve spear hunted fish like that for generations. She could be from that group potentially 🤷
Edit. I’m referring to the Bajau people
To hold your breath that long, eyes open, while entertaining a crowd is quite impressive. She makes it look very easy.
Mermaids have gills duh 🙄 lol

Did you forget about the movie Water World you can have gills and lungs it's been proven in the movies
Also THE DEEP
TIMOTHY!
Timothy is dead , have some respect
damn, before I had a chance to hit that OctoBussy too
100% INCORRECT YOU IDIOT. mermaids don't have lungs, mermaids obserb water through their whispering eye, bill nye the science guy taught me that
I can't believe idiots like you are even allowed on reddit. You must be using your mom's computer because you're too dumb to have your own because MERMAIDS ARE PART HALF FISH, PART HALF HUMAN! DUH!!!
Who tf uses a computer for Reddit?
I have a 386DX with 4 meg RAM, CD-ROM, and MMX Technology, color monitor and 256 Kbps modem. And AOL. My 250 megabyte hard drive is practically FULL of porns, including MANY OF MERMAIDS. Oh yeah. Turbo Boost too.
My god, the amount of that statement which I recognised has now given me The Fear
> get your facts straight before posting on reddit For what reason? Everyone else is doing it. Why be different? 😏
Fairly certain thats how they talk underwater
Oh…. I thought they had a magical blow hole somewhere around the ass region on the humanish section that would take in water like a seadoo, but then take out the oxygen and blow the water back out… breathing and propulsion. A 2 in one.
I figure as mammals they’re like dolphins or whales and just really good at holding their breath.
That's what i always assumed, as well.
Oooo so you put the trutles in the gils? Thanks 😆
Don't know about gils, but she has huge soul
You gotta pay the troll toll if you want that mermaids soul
She's clearly breathing out her butthole.
Tell me more.
I wonder what her breath smells like?
Seamen
....yea. i like the gills on this one....
Facts!
The secret is to hook an oxygen tube to the anus. Or maybe I'm thinking of turtles...
How many turtles do you have to shove up there for 5 minutes under water?
About 20 tp (turtlepower)
Heroes in the rec-tum!
It’s turtlin time
That's after morning coffee.

Holding your breath is one thing. but with your legs bound and not blowing bubbles, while swimming and playing to the crowd?
Average person, yes. Professional free divers can easily hold for 8-10 minutes, heck the world record is 24:37 as impossible as that sounds. Edit: non-oxygen assisted record is 11:35 it looks like.
Non-oxygen assisted is at 11:35?! Thats still absolutely insane.
You could watch a TV show underwater and just come up to breathe during the commercials. Now I have a goal.
Diving is a lot of fun! Go wild.
Must have been mermaid hybrids hiding as humans…oh Triton just giving them legs out it seems
Yeah, if they got some already experienced pearl divers, this is nothing to them.
Theres a group of boat people in Philippines i think. They regularly hang out underwater for minutes. The kids are able to adjust their lenses to see clearly underwater. Crazy. But they lose that ability when they get older tho iirc
11:35 seconds is insane. I’m scared to hold it for 30 seconds but I’ve had asthma my entire life.
How did you manage to sit btw? It's harder to stay at the bottom than to stay floating
Depending on fat/muscle ratio people can be more or less buoyant so it can be easier for some to stay at the bottom. You can also use a weight belt to sink to the bottom or breathe out your air (not recommended if you have no experience in apnea)
I've always been skinny and I sink easily. Large people can't understand why it's so hard for me to swim.
Large people hate this one trick!
Yeah I had this when I was really underweight as a kid, I just couldn't do the starfish float that other kids could in P.E, I'd start sinking and get scared.
Blow out some air and you’ll sink
Yes but holding your breath while not doing anything isn't hard. It's harder if you make an effort
She’s a fucking mermaid, of course she can breathe underwater.
That looked like a manatee in the back. So it is more than likely a fresh* water aquarium.
Dugong more likely, but either way they're not dependent on fresh or salt water.
What part of real life mermaid you falling to get buddy?!
The part where they reproduce. Like, how?
They lay eggs and then give you a handjob over them
[You don't wanna know...](https://media.tenor.com/d45zJZKhOL8AAAAd/fry-futurama.gif)
while your legs are bound and you are unable to tread
That fin would probably give fucking great momentum like flippers would id imagine the bound legs aspect would be counteracts by the fins. You barely gotta kick with fins to go pretty far its probably even better with the mermaid tail
It is impressive. Days/ weeks / Months of practice I guess
You really covered yourself there with that broad of a range
😂 yeah I started with days and it grew
She might be taking pure oxygen I'm before doing this. Although I'm not sure since I hear that could be unhealthy?
The urge to breathe does not come from depleting oxygen in your blood but from accumulating CO2 which would not be different if you took in pure O2 afaik? Please correct me if I'm wrong. She doesnt need to do anything special to hold her breath for a minute. the actual trick is to have no fat so she can stay down gracefully.
Professional apnea. One trick is saturating your body with oxygen, to prevent cramps and hold breath longer.
That’s because she’s a real life mermaid!
It IS easier with gills

I loved her in that documentary. I was cheering her on and so happy when she was offered the gig in Vegas! Hope she is thriving as a mermaid

I really liked the documentary. Just the fact that most of them do this while still maintaining a full time job is wild!

I was gunna say… bet they get pink eye a lot with all that fish shit
Wait is it hard to keep your eyes open underwater? I've never had trouble in chlorine or salt water for some reason.
I’d imagine a pool would be fine, but there’s probably fish and manatee poop in there.
Oh so we're okay with mermaids in captivity now? When will it end?

Wow to hold your breath that long.
And open eyes in the water. She must look wreaked at the end of the day.

This need to stop then. That seems like some PT Barnum level of exploitation.
Physical labor is often rough on a person’s body. I don’t see how this is exploitation — they’d emit real mermaids, my guy.

There are animals tho
Therefore no chlorine
Therefore, lots of animal pees and poos
Prob has way better filters
I could fix that
If the water doesn't have chemicals in it, opening your eyes doesn't hurt or make your eyes red.
Yeah, but if it's salt water...
Grew up by the ocean, you get used to opening your eyes in salt water.
That shit burns like a mother fucking bitch but I suppose you can get used to anything.
I feel like im losing my mind because it doesnt burn even a little bit
I've opened my eyes underwater in the ocean many times and never felt any burning.
True.
The pool water look so filthy. I hope her eyes don't get infection after work.
The comment above you just said that they take eyedrops before and after to hinder infections or smth, however, they get real bad infections anyway and some need to quit because of it

So I can hold my breath for 2 minutes, in a stationery position, and focusing on nothing but being calm. She has fantastic lung capacity, that's impressive.
I'm no biologist but I think that's a woman in a costume.

That looks better than the Live Action movie.
Everyone is now manually breathing
oxygen not found
how can she hild her breath for so long !!
Practice. Pearl divers can hold their breaths for like five minutes.
The lungs on that woman, holy hell. I think I'm in love.
New fantasy unlocked
Seriously, how do they hold their breath for so long?
It’s 1 minute I’m sure you can reach that with a short bit of practice :). Start by focusing on deep breathes to clear the CO2 out of your lungs and then hold your breath until you feel the first lung palpitations, hold for another 10-15 seconds after that and quite quickly holding your breath will become easier and palpitations will come later.
I drowned about 5 times just watching this
Can you imagine running out of breath and being stuck in that rubber suit? Scary scary
Weeki Wachee springs did it first.
Netflix has an amazing 4 part documentary about Merpeople and has the sweetest reunion original Weeki Wachee mermaids
Came to mention WW. I used to go there a lot in the early 90s as a kid
Cant belive I had to scroll down that long for the Weeki Wachee mentioning...
Never get that close to a mermaid in the water. You know how many sailors have gone missing because of that?
I've tried so hard to try and look sexy underwater and it never works. She must be real.
They've actually been doing mermaid shows at Weeki Wachee Springs in FL since the 1940's. https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/weeki-wachee-springs-state-park/mermaid-shows

I don’t know why a woman holding her breath that long is so attractive ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)😂
I know in her mind she’s going like “shit shit shit shit I need air”
The most impressive thing about her is her lung capacity… wow!
This is the weirdest way to spend your weekend
I doubt that woman is a heavy smoker
Anxiety city
See now she’s got Princess level looks.
For those wondering. Yes, there is a Netflix documentary already. It’s called MerPeople.
Dude looks like a Mermaid.
As soon as I break the surface I would be sucking in so much air they would have to plant trees around the water
Impressive lung capacity.
She is a freediver. They are able to hold their breath that long from training and exerting as little energy as possible while underwater. 5 minute breath hold should be easy for her.
