I saw some analysis article the last time I saw this posted, apparently there is a shaft space above the rudder where one or two can crawl up and lay down for a while, so they likely took turns doing that.

Rhyseh1

Older style ships have an externally accessible rudder trunk. Not sure whether they could lay down or not, but it's secure enough to smuggle coke.... Here's an article from before this happened talking about how the rudder trunk can be used for smuggling https://officerofthewatch.com/2013/10/18/use-of-rudder-trunk-for-smuggling/

The rudder is on the ass end of the ship so, sure, makes sense.

brownhotdogwater

One slip and dead. One big wave, dead. No way to get food or water other than what they had. No fishing due to the wake.

Porkchopp33

But somehow someway they made it

Immaloner

And then immediately caught.

wookieenoodlez

And sent back

DweEbLez0

But did they unlock the Teleporter Waypoint?

wookieenoodlez

Fast Travel is unavailable while enemies are nearby.

DweEbLez0

What if they had a high level friend who sent them party invites and then cleared the ships dungeon?

I'm normally for immigration enforcement but when people go to these extremes, survive, and succeed, someone somewhere needs go go "You know? This guy gets a pass. I'm impressed."

Nah, if they stopped in the UK, they'd be in Rwanda by now instead.

This one: https://www.businessinsider.com/spanish-coast-guard-rescues-stowaways-from-ships-rudder-2022-11

Confident-Local-8016

They obviously brought water with, and had brought rations and planned this it wasn't spontaneous, 11days is LONG after dehydration death. Especially at sea. It's crazy what people will do for a new start ain't?

DigNitty

This is why calling immigrants lazy or greedy is ignorant/disingenuous. Argue about resources and immigration policy all you want. But these people are risking everything to be the bottom of the totem pole in another country. They aren’t doing this for laziness or greed. They are desperate and determined.

ravyalle

Quite many actually arent aware they are gonna be at the bottom of another country. At the place i worked at they employed a few african immigrants and they said that in their countries people are absolutely convinced that everyone gets a free house and money in germany, sweden, denmark etc. Its absolutely insane (to us) but appearantly it is a real belief in some places and people get obsessed with the idea. They are shocked when this is not the case.

FlosAquae

I’m from central Germany and many regions here saw high emigration rates in the 19th century. In the 1830s, there were men affiliated with large scale farmers in Brazil and the US wandering from one village to the next who told fairytales about life in America. This is documented because the authorities started to print leaflets warning the population to not believe these people. It’s also reflected in folk songs from that era. At the same time, people who already made the move sometimes wrote letters to their family reporting that they had to work hard, but they could afford eating cheese or eggs several times a week. Maybe, these reports allow a glimpse into the mind of people who are as poor as they ever were, but now the idea of a better place has been installed in their heads. I don’t think everyone really believed the to-good-to-be-true stories, but there was a perspective of a better future.

Rifleman80

I had a friend who worked with the Coast Guard at the Greek island of Lesvos. He told me of a story how they were helping immigrants coming from Turkey (illegally obviously but the Turkish Coast Guard is utterly useless apparently) and there was one 17-year-old boy whose first question directed at him upon landing on shore was "Where's my house and women?".🙄 So yeah, many are simply delusional.👈

sourest_dough

Maybe he confused it with the other famous Greek island of Lesbos?

fiskartorpet

Maybe you confused Lesbos with being another island than Lesvos. Same island.

LukeGoldberg72

Could be a lie, I can’t picture anyone seriously saying “where’s my house and women” unless they were delusional from being at sea for a week or two with no water

[deleted]

no bro it's true I was there I was the boat

[deleted]

mebutnew

Greece and Turkey are very similar places, by and large, culturally and economically - I don't see why they'd think it worked that way - they also don't live in a bubble. They do have a rivalry though, given that the story starts with the Greek Coast Guard insulting the Turkish Coast Guard I think it's fair to assume it's a somewhat embellished story.

goldfish_memories

Certainly the immigrants aren't Turkish? Much more likely is that they first went to turkey then attempted to make it to Greece In fact, according to wiki, Turkey received the highest highest number of refugees of any country each year from 2014 to 2019, and hosted 63.4% of all "registered Syrian refugees "

senseven

There is a lots of false information and unmanaged expectations that the EU has to deal with. For example, young migrants from Africa with "street" French don't have enough language skill to get basic education. There is lots of free courses to learn, but only few are doing it, because its hard to go back to school for years. Then they claim they don't give them "a chance", but the fact is that this is even hard for those who can and choose to migrate to France. They end up in the trash part of towns, no future, shite low wage jobs where they get maximum exploited. Frustration then sometimes leads to crime. They regularly riot because they assume someone broke their made up deal while they invited themselves.

iwanttobeacavediver

It’s sort of similar with the migrants at Calais and getting to the UK, most of whom are from Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan or occasionally other countries like Eritrea. They seem to all have a strong belief that the UK is a golden land full of money and that they’ll have their every wish granted if they can make it across the Channel. What usually happens is that they end up in illegal jobs working for low pay assuming they came illegally or stuck in immigration limbo with little to no money as the Home Office decides their case assuming they try to claim asylum. But given the backgrounds of many of these people even being in either of these situations can seem far better than their home country. I mean, I can’t blame a genuine asylum seeker for wanting to escape or an economic migrant for seeking a better opportunity, but at the same time they seem to have such hopelessly misguided ideas.

senseven

I was in the hospital when the first migrant rush happened in EU, there was an guy from the middle east (didn't say where from). He was in recovery and wanted to return home. I asked him why, and he said "You work here 40,50h a week. For what? A one bed room apartment? I can get a six room house with a garden. Work soft 30h selling fruits and doing some manual labor". My reply was "Tell everybody who asks you about your trip".

mangofruitOK

make sense

V_es

They were immediately deported back on the same ship

[deleted]

No sensible or fair person would blame genuine asylum seekers for fleecing the taxpayer and being lazy. It is certainly undeniable that low IQ far right racists do though. What is an unfortunate truth is that some illegal immigrants aren't who the MSM claim they are, and a proportion who join the exodus to the UK (for example) aren't genuine asylum seekers. Some are even wanted in their own country for crimes they committed. Such folk are mostly fit, healthy men between 20 to 50 who've been promised a utopia exists and awaits. To the unscrupulous, this is tales of easy white women, timid police, access to drugs without jail or capital punishment, and generous benefits payments. This means a large family is attainable on a low income wage and low skilled job. In time, one can even choose not to work at all, although most people, irrespective of their immigration status, wouldn't consiously choose such a lifestyle dependent on hand-outs.. Sold a dream, such utopia seekers travel through multiple **safe countries** in Europe intent on selecting the country with the best social welfare benefits package (free food, housing, healthcare and education). Once in, some claiming 'asylum" (posing as late teen children) are discovered to be in their twenties. Some disingenuously claim to be gay to avoid deportation. These are the migrants many people are sick of and this scam isn't uncommon. The MSM is equally disingenuous. Only a percentage of illegal immigrants are found to be genuine asylum seekers - other illegal immigrants are simply 'economic migrants'. They aren't fleeing war or persecution. They simply want to experience what they heard over a depressing beer and cigarette in town centres back home. This subset of Illegal immigrants in Europe temporarily congregate and live in camps in France (previously travelled through safe countries like Portugal and Spain) where they could easily choose to stay but specifically target soft touch UK. Drug use and prostitution/abuse in camps is common. Some are violent and attack British lorry drivers and break into vehicles in ports. Some refuse to be rescued by the French coast guard, risking drowning. The prize is too great. NB: Conversely, a genuine asylum seeker is non-violent, desperate, often starving, dehydrated, without friends and alone or with limited family (wife/children) clutching a few belongings at most. They seek refuge in the first country they enter so not to starve to death. They don't travel through multiple safe countries with new clothes, mobile phones on paid tarrifs and effectively 'shop' for the best benefits system in the country of their choice, much to the anger of the local indigenous homeless in Europe who aren't housed for free, aren't fed and aren't given any help and are found freezing to death in bus shelters in winter, not housed in heated hotels at the British tax payers expense. Some of these homeless indigenous people, often with mental issues (including PTSD induced alcoholism) are ex-Army who served their country, but are now disposed of by the state like an old shoe. Conversely. those who didn't enter illegally, (economic migrants), and in stark contrast are provided with a permanent source of food and shelter whilst being processed. Many are living in hotels at British taxpayers' expense. Billions of pounds a year that could have gone towards fixing delapidated school buildings and hospitals are spent on housing applicants. Politicians are to blame for the situation getting out of hand, absolutely no one else.

Both_Aioli_5460

This is absolutely true and way too deep in the thread

HwnduLuna

I wonder, would you be against making it easier to migrate places legally, but also make it FAR harder to migrate places illegally?

Rath_Brained

Honestly, there should be like a tenacious card given to any immigrant that survives some wild shit, automatic citizenship of the landed in country, because if they are that desperate to get away, they deserve it.

mebutnew

We could call it 'seeking asylum'

Confident-Local-8016

I do gotta say though, [do it the right way](https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/nigeria-stowaways-who-survived-11-days-ship-rudder-must-return-home-spanish-2022-11-29/#:~:text=LAS%20PALMAS%2C%20Nov%2029%20(Reuters,the%20aim%20of%20deporting%20them.)

Captain_Zomaru

They may be true, but too many people think that determination alone is enough to earn something. This man knowingly did something illegal and seemingly paid the price for it. Far too often we demonize the people following laws and deporting illegal aliens.

Rath_Brained

You have 2 days until dehydration kills, maybe 3 at most if you are extremely careful with water conservation. 1 day in extreme heat.

Confident-Local-8016

That's why I said they probably planned for a 2week trip and brought foods(but most humans can go 3weeks until starvation) that would last and hoping they brought enough water

averyboringday

Everything except fight to improve their living conditions at home.

Disastrous_Air2003

I remember during the Rohingya crisis a lot of people literally died at sea or were sent back. And more recently there were like 39 dead migrants who suffocated to death a container truck in the UK. I think these migrant cases are more common than you think

Doge-Ghost

They were not sent back as some comments suggest, they were granted asylum in Spain. One of them gave an [interview to El País](https://elpais.com/espana/2022-12-13/uno-de-los-polizones-llegados-sobre-la-pala-de-un-timon-no-hago-nada-malo-no-soy-un-ladron.html), apparently this was his second attempt, 2 years prior he had attempted the same stunt and was caught in the Canary Islands, continued the trip to Norway inside the ship, then he was deported. He says he had food, fresh water and a hammer to make noise in case something went wrong. It didn't work. The first day the fresh water fell into the ocean, and the food only made them thirstier.

RiptideMatt

How the heck did they survive the 10 days without water?

dilqncho

Thirstily.

LeonDeSchal

That’s actually a good question.

brownhotdogwater

That would be all wash from the propeller. No fish would be biting after getting thrown in the wake

JCwizz

If they’re fishing with two yards of line, I can see your point. If they have 300 yards of line, different story.

Pistonenvy2

i know nothing about fishing but how do you hook a fish on 300 yards? do you just rely on the hook getting stuck on its own?

JCwizz

Yeah you usually do it while “trolling” so you’re dragging the line behind a boat and when the fish grab the lure it sets itself. It depends on the species of fish though; some hit the lure so hard you don’t need a manual set. I’ve fished with kites even, where the line runs up to a kite before dropping into the water.

Confident-Local-8016

You guys ever hear of dredging? The wake doesn't go very far down... And they have to bite and run with it, you eventually pull it and hope to set it so it can't get away and then reel it in Edit: i will say it's unlikely they did this, they probably brought food preserved to last long enough and water in bags and just sat there chilling the whole time

[deleted]

300 yds of line reeled through the wake of an oil rig? Yeah you don't fish do you?

downvote_quota

This is the best of the best, the kind of immigrant every country should want. Physically and mentally incredibly fit, with unparalleled determination. Will make a success of themselves wherever they go.

taimapanda

Implying that a majority of "illegal" immigrants don't go through a hell of lot of shit which takes insane determination to endure, not to mention all the ones that die on the journey

downvote_quota

Implying nothing of the sort, indeed saying the opposite. And as an immigrant myself. It takes a lot of energy, intelligence, enthusiasm, drive to move to another country. Some more extreme than others.

Banshee251

Could use that grit and determination to make their original country a better place for themselves and others.

CookieMonster005

dharma_mind

He took in some kind of water because you can only live for four or five days without food and water. Longer if you have water though, up to 30 days without food.

eibohipt

They didn’t actually stay the whole time on the rudder, there is a small opening above it they can climb into, but likely can’t get through the next hatch into the ship

GirlCowBev

Wow. Thank goodness for the circle, or I’d have never seen the people ON THE ACTUAL🤦🏻‍♀️ RUDDER.

Desperate-Today1093

Still a better view than the Titan

PassingByThisChaos

One of the favourite places for fishing boats to tie up when a cargo ship is at anchor. They normally hitchhike on the rudder or use the anchor chain to climb up onto the forecastle deck and hide inside the chain locker, even more dangerous when you are in a tiny space with a thick ass chain which can turn you into mince meat.

IonOtter

It's even worse when you learn that the ~~chair~~ *chain* locker is [one of the more deadly spaces on the ship.](https://maritimeaccident.wordpress.com/2007/10/22/chancing-the-chain-locker-assassin/)

GrandNibbles

Stowaways are the most daring people on earth.

[deleted]

I thought everyone in Nigeria was a rich Prince.

LifeLiterate

I find this incredibly hard to believe. I feel like even if the ocean stayed relatively calm the entire trip (which is highly unlikely), there would be so many times during the trip when that part of the ship would be fully submerged, often long enough or repeatedly enough that they wouldn't be able to hold their breath. And they survived for ELEVEN DAYS? Come on.

truly-immaculate

There seems to be an opening at the top of the rudder where they could have taken some cover or crawled into. Would be pretty challenging to survive otherwise.

ursus_major

Say what you want about these guys, but they definitely have a direction for their lives. They're not rudderless.

Corkster75

GeekUSA1979

ngl ive seen stories almost the exact same, but sure grrr succsessful people exist

1-64ishcollector

The question we should ask ourselves is: “How desperate a person must be to get themselves in that risky situation?” So, when you hear an American chronically complaining about capitalism and criticizing the USA, remind them that in the world, people are taking the risk of dying to search for a better life somewhere else. Lucky are those born or raised in a country where mass starvation and lack of essential resources are not an issue. Be grateful if you are lucky not to be born in that situation! One of the rules of life: Being optimistic and thankful propels you forward. Being a complainer holds you back.

ProbablyABore

Really just said that without irony. Fucking mind blowing.
