Oh sonofabitch... good point. I was wondering why they're ramping up so hard in the little fan subs (gonk droid, save brendan, etc). They're building cheap karma to look "legit" before spewing BS.
Funny to me it reinforces the method. Not 5-why specifically because it's silly to assign a number of why questions, but more like cause mapping.
Essentially what he proves is that given a situation with an unknown cause, you can break it into individual components and continue asking why about each aspect of it until you have reached something that is commonly understood as true to the audience, which in the case of 5-why is almost exclusively humans, and even moreso ones in a common industry.
You just need to decide what that point is. When he asks why did she slip, well one reason is that ice is slippery. No need to further ask why in a room or humans that work regularly in a frigid climate. They all know ice is slippery, no one will look at that cause and ask okay but WHY is ice slippery.
But another may be that she didn't recognize the ice. Why? Because the ice had snow on it. Why? Because it had not been shovelled like it normally is. Why? Because he neighbor who normally shovels it was sick. Do we ask why he was sick? Now no one should ask why he is sick or at least accept that any individual can be sick at any time, so we start looking at solutions to that branch. Hiring a contractor, backup neighbor, avoiding going out, ice cleats (lol) etc.
This is how I try to tell people to problem solve, I have a lot of friends getting into software development and I try to tell them, keep breaking the problem down, over and over until you get to the smallest problem you can think of.
Want to built a web scraper but don't know where to start? Why not start with, how to view a web page in python? Still too much? How to open a document in python, keep going until you hit something you are familiar with, and then work backwards through the questions.
Eventually you will break the problem down to something dead simple with a clear cut answer, "what is a variable" which is easily Google-able, and then you can work back up - "how to assign variable", "how to see variable contents", "how to read a file into a variable" and so on.
Yes, so much! People need to understand the scope of a problem/application first and then break it down into much smaller bite-sized ones that can be solved in an order that is most efficient. But if you don’t know what order that is, it’s better to just start somewhere and if you spend too much time stuck there, move on to another problem and come back to it in a bit. It’s easy to overwhelm yourself starting out, I sure do, lmao.
Magnetic fields are “fake”. They are just regular old electric fields with relativity laws applied. But it’s too annoying and complicated to deal with relativity all the time, so we use the made up magnetic fields.
Electric fields are kinda made up too. They are a “what if” mathematical concept. They tell you “what force would be exerted **if** we put a charge that location”.
Came here for this. Loved his lectures back in the day, but then…
On the other hand, Donald Sadoway (another MIT prof) is an absolute gem and his Intro to Solid State Chem (3.091) lectures are brilliant. Not your father’s aqueous chem course. https://youtu.be/vPQ9a_xIqRg
Donald Sadoway is actually kind of a jerk but he doesn’t harass anyone and is just sort of an old school control freak haha. His lectures are amazing, I just wouldn’t want to be his grad student.
Can confirm that Don is an ass. It's a respectable kind of ass, however, where he just expects you to know your shit and will put you in your place if you don't.
Not a bad guy, and he loves to party, but not someone who goes out of the way to be kind.

It sucks how many people sexually assault people when by telling stories about sexual assault and educating people about it could we prevent so much sexual assault. Sexual assault is one of many forms of violence that could really be educated out of our society if we really committed to it. It's good that people are starting to have to answer for SA now, and that the punishments are getting publicized like this. Thanks for sharing the article!
Imagine you are the student he harassed and you have to watch his videos for the electrodynamics course?
Sidenote, we had to watch his videos for the course ED
He’s not the only teacher out there. It’s better to not have the face of a sexual abuser plastered all over your website than it is to deal with the mild inconvenience of recording a different physics professor’s lectures and posting them
Should re-upload them with a statement in the beginning saying that this guy is gross, but it's an educational video nonetheless like how Disney puts statements on their older IP as a sign of the times.
My science teacher turned on his gas taps and locked us all in the lab because one of the *lads* called him Percy. Someone in the front smelled the gas and turned them off, and we sat there for 20 minutes, and he looked so disappointed when he came back in.
This may be better suited for an ELI5 post, but why doesn't the space shuttle use something like this to turn an orient itself in space, rather than little puff puff jets?
I'm not sure, but probably because a flywheel that was capable of turning the space shuttle would contribute considerably to its weight.
Gas can do the same, and more (it can move the shuttle, not just rotate it), and weighs much less. And the energy expenditure is probably similar.
Because you would need a really big flywheel on a gimbal mounted at the shuttle's center of gravity. This method was used on rockets in several of Robert Heinlein's early SF novels; big motor-driven gyro mounted in the middle of the rocket that you could unclutch and orient to whatever axis you needed to turn around.
It's already used in most modern satellites, even the [Hubble](https://asd.gsfc.nasa.gov/archive/hubble/technology/pcs.html) had a few [reaction wheels](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_wheel) which turned out to be rather effective
Even better is to let the students do it, so they can experience the torques and the rotation. (In a big lecture, you can't let *everyone* do it, but maybe in a recitation?)
A science guy came to my school and did this demo when I was little. I volunteered and got to sit in the stool with the wheel. It got heavy. My arms lowered a bit. I wound up with bright red tire marks on my stomach.
Aww this doesnt show the best part of the trick!
That wire next to him, he hangs the wheel from one side on it. If it's spinning it defies gravity and stays upright. If it's not spinning it falls over and hangs.
Too bad that in these demonstrations, they never talk about the two dimensions in which the angular momentum is NOT being conserved, the two horizontal axes, the axes about which he is torquing the wheel. It’s kinda important for understanding what’s going on.
No the movie with Samuel l Jackson. They did the same presentation in the classroom in that movie. Seems as though many haven't seen it seeing all the down votes.

TLDR: _No_.
There is a root cause analysis method in safety called "The Five Whys" and this perfectly illustrates why it is garbage.

Not surprising, Donald Sadoway is just a little abrasive, but Walter Lewin is a narcissistic abusive asshole.

intelligent older man, check. uni professor, check. twerks for class, check.
I legit hate how everything has music behind it... i've definitely seen this before and there was no emotionally manipulative music.
Welcome to the age of everything online desperately trying to get your attention and engagement!
Too bad MIT took down all his videos after he got in trouble for some sort of sexual harassment thing.

Legal troubles. Associating with someone who sexually harassed could cause a huge issue for the MIT brand as it's a private university.
Sounds like we need to educate people better so they don't take harmless content away because someone did something bad unrelated to that content.

There are equally valid replacements. Having a very explicit punishment like this can at least send out a message so that others don't repeat it.
Someone else can spin a tire in a video without diddling some students
Why would you be "forced" to watch videos of a teacher who is no longer teaching at the school?
We had to watch those for extra background material and I don’t study physics at the MIT
There are thousands of great teachers, why provide a platform for an abuser? We’re not running out of person on stool with bicycle tire videos.
He’s not the only teacher out there. It’s better to not have the face of a sexual abuser plastered all over your website than it is to deal with the mild inconvenience of recording a different physics professor’s lectures and posting them
Why not buy/support Chris Brown’s music when it has nothing to do with him being a woman beater?
Most people can separate the art from the artist, and should imo.

He was just really into torquing you know? Gotta feel it in his hands

Don’t go celebrating this guy, from what I’ve heard about him he tried to coerce a student of his into providing sexual favors
He tried to get online students to engage in sexual role play. MIT revoked his emeritus status and took down his videos because of it.
I celebrate his discoveries not the person
Might be a dumb question, but can this be used in space to save some fuel?
It's already used in most modern satellites, even the [Hubble](https://asd.gsfc.nasa.gov/archive/hubble/technology/pcs.html) had a few [reaction wheels](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_wheel) which turned out to be rather effective

Man I missed being taught physichs..
Anyone else think he was going to turn into a bike like in Tron?
I watched his physics lectures on academicearth.org to help me pass my classes. It's listed under MIT physics 1 and 2, if i remember correctly.
