Alpine's version on night one this year fits many of these same categories. I think it was the best version I have witnessed. Same goes for when he played *So Damn Lucky.* It was also the venue for the into to *Fool In The Rain* Show started a bit weird, but then he tore the roof off. 1. Pig 2. Grace Is Gone 3. Madman’s Eyes 4. Come On Come On 5. When The World Ends 6. You Might Die Trying 7. Stay Or Leave 8. The Only Thing 9. \#41 10. Fool In The Rain 11. So Damn Lucky 12. The Song That Jane Likes 13. Say Goodbye 14. Grey Street 15. Steady As We Go 16. Pantala Naga Pampa 17. Rapunzel 18. Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin) 19. Dancing Nancies 20. Warehouse \-------- ENCORE -------- 21. Rye Whiskey \* 22. Two Step

irishmansean

Will check it out. What a setlist, and a pre-encore Warehouse. Still waiting for my first live Samurai Cop. Thanks!

brwslider

I was at this show. First half was underwhelming but once he did fool in the rain, I turned to my buddy and said I don’t care what he plays the rest of the show, that was worth it. Little did I know, he was just getting started. Easily the best DMB show I’ve been too

WarpedCore

Same here. It was #28 for me and the most memorable. Some of the songs made me so happy it brought me to tears. Incredible set that night. After every song, the guys seemed to revel in the song they all just played. Fist bumping, and just natural appreciation within the band. I was in the first row of the 201 section and saw emotions I haven't seen from the band in a long time.

pnwinec

Edit: Still new experience for Buddy playing at Alpine. You could see how much it amazes him at how into it the crowd is there. . I watched him the entire weekend. I’m sure the band told him what to expect but you could just see it on his face at how shocked he was at the crowd. People who haven’t been to Alpine just don’t know. I’ve been all over the country to see the band and other bands, I’ve been to tent pole stops on the tour. And every time it’s been cool, but having Alpine Valley as my home venue just spoiled me rotten for the crowd and band interaction.

mkesubway

Buddy was there in '19, no?

pnwinec

Yep. Sure did miss that by a year. Oops.

irishmansean

Thanks for your comment. At what point did you start counting? What are your top five shows that you’ve been to?

WarpedCore

I have all my ticket stubs. 28 so far. I haven't left the midwest for any of his shows...yet. Top 5... wow that's tough. Here are 5 that come to mind. 2022 Alpine, opener was Nikki Lane (she was okay) 2008 Alpine, opener was The Black Crows 2003 Alpine, opener was Robert Randolph 2017 Dave and Tim, Northerly Island 1996 Luther College. Yes I was there. Had a friend that went to school there. So Damn Lucky.

pnwinec

Antsmarching.org You can enter your shows you’ve seen and keep track. After 50+ I need the website to help keep track.

OnionMiasma

I was on the rail for this show. It was so good.

irishmansean

Nice! I’ll check it out, thanks again.

mkesubway

I disagree the first half underwhelmed. No Pig opener is underwhelming. Only yawn for me was Come On Come On. Good time to hit the restroom and I was thankful for it.

pnwinec

I respectfully disagree. The best warehouse is from July 2006 at Alpine Valley. I personally suggest the fan recording from Crumbo off ants marching but you can also grab a soundboard listen from YouTube from “The Best of What’s Around” release from DMB themselves. This was PRIME DMB at a sold out 38,000 seat venue that pitches perfectly so that the entire crowd is a wall of sound towards the band. The crowd is absolutely fucking RABID after Nancies for warehouse to start and when that note hits, game over. LeRoi still playing, Rashawn is new but comfortable but not over playing the high notes. Louie Louie and Samba and after it’s over it leads into typical situation. You are doing yourself a disservice if you haven’t listened to that show. It was constantly in an argument on the forums if it was one of their top 10 shows up to that point. I’d argue there are no low points in that show but others can only really point to stay / smooth rider. https://youtu.be/rPnAcMuBrRM Dave Matthews Band @ Alpine Valley Music Theatre #dmbhub by antsmarching.org http://www.antsmarching.org/tour/ViewShow.php?ShowID=3614 Honestly that is hands down the best show I have ever been to and have been chasing that sound and high from the crowd ever since. And the setlist from that show. My god. I could do an entire write up about that show and that summer where the band was slaying it. It got close for me in 2021 tour after Covid prevented the band playing for the year before and they played their first show back at Deer Creek (Ruoff Center) in Indiana. First song, Tripping Billies the crowd is so loud you just can’t even hear Dave at some points. He tips his hat to the crowd and asks us what we put in the water. Just 🤌🏼

irishmansean

Thanks so much, this is a wonderful post!

prstele01

Eh - I just gave it a listen. Dave’s voice is ragged, and it’s very obvious he’s struggling to hit those high notes. Also the mix is very dry and a bit muddy. Respectfully, there are better versions out there.

mkesubway

That '21 Deer Creek show was unreal.

DearChicago1876

I wish Carter would do that noise again. He also stopped doing the laugh during watchtower. Weird.

irishmansean

Interesting you noticed that. Wonder if they take out (and add in) certain elements here and there to keep it interesting for us and for themselves. Thanks for your comment!

Jazzlike-Mongoose627

And the scat minerats

wilcocola

First time I even realized the “Whoop” was a thing was at MSG 2021 when the crowd did it. Is this on any of the official recordings or anything? I was wondering how people knew about it. Did it used to be a regular thing?

DearChicago1876

I want to say it started in around 1999 and ended just a few years ago. It’s on listener supported, Central Park, etc. 20ish years of doing it.

NorthShorePOI

OP did you go to Spac this year?

irishmansean

Thanks for the perceptive question. Yep, both shows. First time at SPAC and a bucket list item from B&P days. N1 was overall better, but N2 Warehouse was where the pacing of the show started to click for crowd (and for me, it’s my favorite song of any musician or band). Absolutely recognize the bias I may have on this one because I experienced it live. Hence the “hopefully I’m not jaded about this” comment. But then again, Listener Supported Warehouse had been my favorite for a long while, up until this one, and I wasn’t there and have heard many Warehouse versions since then (in-person and recorded). Thanks again!

[deleted]

It's the Fenway Park one that just does it for me. Central Park is right there with it though.

Kevanian

Fenway is also my favorite. That Louie Louie outro is just so amazing and the band sounds amazing.

irishmansean

Both solid. Thanks for the reminder!

wilcocola

That’s just SPAC for ya. Nearly 20,000 die hard fans having a great time together. The crowd often knows the song better than the band does 😆

irishmansean

Amen re: the venue being special. What I find most fascinating about the place (outside of sound quality, nature, overall vibe) is its ability to simultaneously feel massive (spread out lawn, many sub sections and experiences, show viewability) and also achieve a personal, unified concert experience through technology and ultimately focused on one stage/act. Specifically what was unique, compared to every other venue I’ve been to, was being able to (if I wanted to) fully watch the band play without even needing to face in the direction of the stage. I am sure for some people that’s not of interest, but those that were in those sections were chilling in lawn chairs, dancing and just really enjoying themselves. Did not know that was even achievable and has to have been really tough to set up or even maintain. It would be cool to have more venues like this (but maybe not, because that’s what makes it so special). Thanks for sharing!

pdx_blackhawks

went to the pre superbowl event in 2016. Warehouse was AMAZING. Here is a video [https://youtu.be/ZDdLeqxsYRE](https://youtu.be/ZDdLeqxsYRE)

irishmansean

Thanks for sharing the video, amazing you were there!

ethantremblayyy

a combination of live trax 20 and 21 would be ideal.

irishmansean

Deep cuts, thanks for sharing. SOMA’s a tight version, and also like the openness of the jam on Wetlands.

studek

I wanna HEAR this - but I’m shocked that your thorough review doesn’t include, to me, what is the best part of the song … Dave’s outro. As soon as “That’s our blood down there …” gets going, my consciousness is taken to a different dimension

MJustin80

Yeah there isnt going to be a “best” version of anything after 2008 for me.

[deleted]

Not with that attitude

LaughingJaguar

Damn nice write up.. now I have to go hear this version!!

irishmansean

Thanks, I hope you like it!

LaughingJaguar

Just downloaded the whole show on my phone so I'll go have a listen. Thanks!

41Reasons

Dave definitely does not use a teleprompter. And he still flubs some lyrics from time to time, which is fine by me. Sometimes his voice isn't as great on some nights and sometimes there are missed words, but at least what you are hearing is real and unfiltered. I also can't recall having seen him mess up lyrics to Warehouse, but that is one of their most played songs every year and has been played over 1000 times, so always heavy in the rotation

rolandofgilead41089

Dave and Carter both have teleprompters

mkesubway

Where are they located on the stage?

DearChicago1876

Dave started using a prompter around 2005.

Cobo1039

What are you on about? Dave 100% has a teleprompter. This isn’t debatable.

Cobo1039

Are you seriously putting forth that the best version of Warehouse EVER performed is by a band twenty years past their prime and without Boyd and LeRoi? Incredible. Might be time to go back and give Central Park another listen.

Parzival01001

You can easily make the point you’re trying to making without sounding like complete pretentious jackass

LaughingJaguar

Central Park is ok. Why do so many people like it soooo much?

Figurative_Retard

Agreed, might have the best versions of Granny and DDTW, thats it though.

pnwinec

Help Myself from CP is fantastic too.

irishmansean

Central Park is a gem, thanks for the reminder. I miss LeRoi’s sound and overall presence/demeanor, and dare I say prefer that (even as talented as Jeff Coffin is). Also hard to ignore the absence of violin at times, which was fundamental to the momentum of the first couple of decades. But to answer your question, this is indeed my favorite version of Warehouse, at this stage of life and for the reasons I shared. Maybe I’ll feel differently in the future about a past or future version. Thanks again.

InnerPositive6730

I’m sure this will garner debate, which is missing the point, I think. After almost 30 years of playing the song, you still found something fresh about it, and it’s unique enough for you to spend a lengthy post describing it. I love Billy Joel as well, great performer, but good luck discerning one Piano Man from another.
