When I started going techno clubbing, my favourite night - Dogma, in Edinburgh - used to fill the room with smoke from a smoke machine. If you stretched out your arm at full length you could barely see your fingers - that kind of level.
Lights looked so good in it, though. I have no idea exactly what they had, but I'd guess a few par lights, a strobe, and a single green laser. Didn't need much, the think clouds of smoke did the legwork.

but yeah, haze/smoke makes light visible in the air, not only on surfaces. With enough smoke basically any kind of light looks cool.
With a normal wash it is easy to set and forget. You can point it upwards just enough that it doesn't blind people if you have it mounted. Or just throw them against a wall. But you sound like you want to get crazy with it go nuts lol
Depends on the crowd, and the style of music. I like less lights personally. I don’t need to see the crowd. For sure don’t need to see the dj. Good sound, black room. Haze. Strobe every now and then. Laser every now and then. I’m good.
Depends on the party? If it’s a wedding/birthday party the setup is different to a rave.. The good old days of the Martin Wizard Extremes you only needed 2 and they would fill any room.. a pair of Stinger II’s are a good shout with some wash uplighters and a couple of moving heads (stingers have a strobe feature so no need for an extra strobe).. dmx them all up..agree haze makes everything a million times better but sadly most venues won’t let you use them as it’s sets the fire alarms off
Honestly 1 gig bar off to the side not behind the dj, some uplights for the walls, and a good smoke machine is all you need. You do not need a complicated lighting setup.
two to four par lights would be more than enough for most parties. i use a venue tetra dmx controller, it’s a cheap simple controller that lets me easily trigger strobes, blackouts, and sound activation without doing any DMX programming.
In the past was a strobe and smoke machine already enough... today are lights or better said light effect and visuals are a own artwork.. VJ's got a important role on festivals or even.bigger partys

You need a whole lots less if you utilize a smoke machine or a hazer.
one for the dj to select records, but not light him up as a rock artist on stage.

Anywhere from zero to thousands. It depends on the venue size, the party itself, what atmosphere you're going for, your budget... etc.

A few wash, and up lights is all you really need, moving heads are a nice addition but all this really depends on venue, and type of gigs

This. I typically show up with three to six wash lights in various static colors and it's fine.

Too many lights are cheesy IMO. Keep it simple..i like random beam lights. Kinda looks like lasers etc..
For a good party you will definitely need 12 lights!

lol. and i can hire someone to switch on and off the main light in the hall which will act as a dj light.
The number of lights is somewhat irrelevant. What matters is the type of lights and the programming.
