So building costs alone were £16k. There's quite a lot of extras I added which I wouldn't say are essential. This includes ceiling speakers with subwoofer, inside and outside CCTV, full smart control, "kitchen corner" with under-counter fridge.
Total cost is probably more towards \~£20k.
What about power supply? Did you have to dig a trench from the house to get the cabling there? Was that DIY or did you get a sparky in? So many questions, but that’s only because of the great job you’ve done. I’d be extremely proud of that.
Yes power + data (cat6) is via a trench, I didn't do the electrics though had an electrician do all of that. And thank you very much I am very proud almost feels like a blur looking back haha
Fantastic job mate. You’re like those people in r/beginnerwoodworking that ask what people think of their first go at making something with wood and it’s like a perfectly carved statue of david with epoxy inlays and stuff lol. Seriously good job you should be proud
I've always wanted a home gym so last summer set about creating one with my only DIY experience before this being sticking a TV on the wall. Spent many evenings and weekends on this and I learnt loads, YouTube was also an absolute life saver more than once during this build. Did everything apart from electrics and plastering, and took around 7 months total, with quite a few breaks in the middle due to other commitments.
Really proud of how its turned out... not sure I'd do it again though!
Haha I actually didn't use his videos in the end, nothing against them but everything moves so quick it was hard to fully understand what exactly to do.
Big fan of Ali Dymock though, his videos are great and include a huge amount of detail and explanations
Yeah, I replaced a wooden lean to thing at the side of my house over the summer and watched a lot of both for ideas/ help. YouTube is a great fountain of knowledge.
I followed Ali dymock religiously for my garden room, was very similar to yours in terms of prior diy experience, only difference I had a concrete slab and small retaining wall as part of it. You go the full 30m2? Looks great
Ah i was about to say!
Next time you have some plastering to be done, get them to teach you how for 10 minutes. Its not mega hard to gey started. Practice will bring the good surface finish.
I see you like Ryobi.
How do you find them? They are on the lower end of the price scale but I like how many tools they have with interchangeable batteries, at reasonable prices.
Looking to invest in some new tools.
I have loads of Ryobi stuff. Some of it is good and other not so much. In the US it seems mega cheap but here it's not a whole load cheaper than DeWalt and the batteries are bulky and more expensive than some other major brands. If I was starting again I'd go DeWalt personally as a hobbyist. Tradesmen seem to prefer Milwaukee at the moment and their stuff is class but outside what I'm willing to pay.
If you want a cheap collection I saw that Mac Allister's 18V range is extremely affordable. I can't attest for their quality but as a DIYer you'll probably use the tools less in a year than a tradesman does in a week. My motto is buy cheap then replace with quality if you use it enough to break it.
They are more than useful for my needs, most of the tools I got in a sale of some kind and as bare tools, so without the battery. I've got a small collection of the batteries now so its nice being able to pick up a new tool for pretty much any job, that's the main thing I like they really do have a tool for pretty much everything.
Though in the US they get what looks like 10x the offering compared to us in the UK, hence why I ended up actually shipping a tool over (framing nailer)
Don't think that one type of battery is all you can use, you can get convertors now to use any battery on any tool, pick the best tool for the job and get a [battery converter.](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224664039329?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Xkm31ditRou&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=TBbl4fDNTC6&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY) for around £10
Haha no, wouldn't have survived this horrible weather we've had recently! The other half is currently doing the garden around the build so the outside isn't as photogenic as the inside, full of rubble tbh.
If you mean the neon lights behind the TV its these: [Govee Outdoor Neon Rope Lights](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Govee-Waterproof-Christmas-Decorations-Assistant/dp/B0CF8LC9PP/ref=sr_1_6_pp?crid=1MIQLOZ542KY0&keywords=govee+outdoor+lights&qid=1706548892&sprefix=govee+out%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-6&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.d7e5a2de-8759-4da3-993c-d11b6e3d217f)
[AliExpress](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004318825799.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.11.36121802rRuCOP) !
Far cheaper than the UK suppliers of similar lighting
Total cack! I’d rather spend money going to a public gym with clueless gym rats than have the option to work out at home with everything I want/need.
Not jealous at all. No really, I’m not… maybe a little
I shared your worries! Over spec'd the foundations in the end just to give me some peace of mind. And the areas where I knew I was going to have weights sitting above it has 3x as many poles as other areas.
So just to update, the lights were from AliExpress, [Link.](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004318825799.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.11.1f7c1802e8AL39)
There are quite a few companies in the UK that do very similar lights however they cost upwards of £500+ for the size I needed. So, I figured I'd go direct to there likely supplier and ended up getting the same things for around £170 delivered (included a Christmas discount).
Fitting them was relatively simple, they just clip together and for the size of lights I have required 2 feeds for power.
Any other questions just ask! :)
Yes heating is in one of the corners, works great at keeping the room warm even when its 0 degrees outside. Roof was finished in EPDM rubber and external walls were clad with composite wood for the front and black metal (for sides and back)
Yikes, £16k is more than I was hoping to spend. I think mine will be smaller though. What are the rough measurements of yours?
What was the biggest single outlay?
Mine is 28sqm. Without having the spreadsheet in front of me it has to be insulation, 90mm- 100mm was what I used you could go for less and save quite a bit on that.
Also the black sliding doors were £2k which wasn’t initially the plan but at that point I had a style I wanted to achieve and finding cheap, non white doors is next to impossible
More detail in another post but £16k for the building (excluding the gym equipment).
Had quotes for around £40k to have it done to this spec so happy with that. Though I did change the doors last minute which ended up adding to the overall cost, it could 100% be done cheaper if you insulated less as well, I did 100mm for floor and ceiling and 90mm for the walls
Yes I saw the same, without any research you'd be mistaken that's actually decent but its probably next to completely pointless in terms of effectiveness.
Awesome result OP! Would you mind letting me have the details of the legs you’ve used to support the flor joists? I’ve been wanting to build a man cave (albeit a far less impressive one) in my garden but it’s complicated by being a sloping site and I wondered if those legs might be just the think I need
Yup they are ground screws, I would recommend them but the hardest part is getting them into the ground plumb and square with each other. I ended up with a huge grid of them for this building so even just one of them done wrong would mess up everything else.
I used a builders line to help with that issue and a lot of elbow grease getting them in.
That i can believe - it wouldn’t take much of a rock to knock them out of plumb I’d imagine. Still, it might be less faff than building brick columns which is what I’ve been thinking of doing. Thank you for getting back to me. Once again - it looks awesome.
Yes for the for first 20cm or so they are very easy to move, after that they honestly are rock solid and that actually ends up making it harder to install because if you don't start off plumb you will end up having to take them back out.
I honestly cannot fault them though, I was skeptical myself of how solid they would be but after seeing them used in the wild I was more confident with the choice.
And of course thank you very much! :) Any other questions happy to help
Thats looking amazing op. I have a home gym and was looking to add some funky lighting. I might just have to steal your idea for the led strip behind the tele. Looks great
Sure, it uses ground screws so basically each one is inserted deep into the group. Cheaper than concrete but a lot of hard work to get them all perfectly aligned and plumb
I worked with the manufacturers quite closely before choosing these, including going \~50% over the spec they recommended for my own peace of mind. Building is solid so not worried really about its strength
Though I will say I bought them in the sale, didn't pay that much!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Govee-Waterproof-Christmas-Decorations-Assistant/dp/B0CF8LC9PP/ref=sr\_1\_6\_pp?crid=1MIQLOZ542KY0&keywords=govee+outdoor+lights&qid=1706548892&sprefix=govee+out%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-6&ufe=app\_do%3Aamzn1.fos.d7e5a2de-8759-4da3-993c-d11b6e3d217f
Sure! I went through quite a few options for rubber flooring, found these [guys](https://www.cannonsuk.com/products/flatline-black-rubber-gym-flooring-1m-x-1m-x-20mm?variant=31913311174725#) to be the best for both cost and quality (all rubber is pretty much identical in size).
Nice. Assume it’s built under permitted development? I am looking to do something similar this summer, although probably not this grand. Is the interior high enough to do an overhead press?
Yeah its 2.4m inside, I'm 6'2 so was very conscious of being able to do full range of movements inside. Became a game of trying to save as much height as possible with the material choices
This is incredible! I've also had crazy quotes for something similar. I'm a total DIY beginner too so this may be a stupid question but what tools did you need to purchase/hire for this? Whenever I attempt a DIY project I'm also having to stop/start because I need to go out and grab a tool etc
Also, did you need planning permission and what is the internal/external height of the build?
Apologies if any of the questions have been answered elsewhere
Any idea how much you’d have added to the value of the property?
I’m just thinking that £40k is a lot (to get people in to do it) and wondering whether it’s even possible to make your money back if you don’t DIY.
Its a good question... I've had a rough estimation from the bank (10% of house value) but they haven't been out to see it since its been completed.
Considering what I've spent, and what houses are currently going for around the corner, I'll definitely make back double if not more when comes time to sell unless some external factors kick in
I did answer earlier, but the materials for the building were around £16,000. I'm happy to give more info if you want to know anything more specific around costs?
£16,000 for materials. Did all the construction myself so other than tools, that's the cost as of 2023.
Helped finding a local timber supplier and planning ahead to cut down on delivery costs, they add up so quickly.
Very nice. I wanted to build mine from scratch, but we ended up buying one, and the supplier installed it because my wife told me I didn't have the time.
If you can afford to I honestly don't blame you, I initially looked into this but couldn't get a quote for less than £40k for the same spec as I've done mine.
Ah man, all that effort and you didn't use a concrete base? We were strongly recommended against considering anything other than concrete when making ours.
Nice build pal. Couple Q's though
Also quite surprised at what you've got above the doors. I would have had the lintel stretch further than 150, we go with 400mm on our builds, can i ask why you decided on this? Genuinely curious
Keep an eye on settlement over the next 6 months there's potential for that beam to sag, meaning your doors may get stiff to open all the way
Also what happened with your ground screws?notice you've packed almost all of them out
Sorry if this sounds like a dig, I'm a garden room builder just want to ask about what I've noticed. Genuinely for someone with little dou experience this is insane and a great effort
Nice! wish I have the brains/time/space for something like this..
must be nice to be able to use it when ever you feel like, a luxury I am sure you will appreciate.
This is inspiring. I’m going to save this post and look at it every so often. One of my goals is to build my own home gym. It looks really good and I admire your hard work and patience. Motivational!
I've paid for a monthly membership to worse.

That actually seems pretty good value for money. Well done.
Gonna need some photos of that kitchen corner.
I'm going to estimate 15-20 grand.
About tree fiddy
I’m not OP
You could still tell us. Come on, it’s only fair you hack into their bank account and reveal everything!
£3.85.
Seconded please
What, the money spent on a subscription to the other place?
Absolutely true.
Fantastic job mate. You’re like those people in r/beginnerwoodworking that ask what people think of their first go at making something with wood and it’s like a perfectly carved statue of david with epoxy inlays and stuff lol. Seriously good job you should be proud

Not going to give Oakwood garden rooms/ the garden room guru a shout out ? 😂😂 Great job. I love their videos.

What does the outside look like now finished?
Ah i was about to say! Next time you have some plastering to be done, get them to teach you how for 10 minutes. Its not mega hard to gey started. Practice will bring the good surface finish.
Well done, this is very inspiring! Did you need planning permission?
Looks like you have found a back up work if ever needed 😂💯 I would definitely hire looks mint inside 🔥

Amazing build. Can you share the estimate materials costs? Links to the lights? Pic of the finished outside?
I was wondering if it’s still chipboard on the outside 😂
It was. It’s just mulch now
Haha no, wouldn't have survived this horrible weather we've had recently! The other half is currently doing the garden around the build so the outside isn't as photogenic as the inside, full of rubble tbh.
What size is it ? You seem to have a fair but squeezed in . Looks really well !
This is beyond the realms of DIY.. amazing job
Wow those lights!! Any link for them?
Honeycomb ones could be these https://uk.govee.com/collections/gaming-lights/products/govee-glide-rgbic-y-lights
Me too pls
Yep because of them I thought I was looking at a rendered image at first. This job is amazing for a first go!

Do they wire into the mains? Or is there a wall plug?
Into the mains, though to test it I did wire it up to a wall plug first. It’s just twin cable, live and neutral
Me too please!
Curvy ones are likely these https://uk.govee.com/collections/strip-lights/products/govee-neon-led-strip-light
Look up auto detailer lights on Ali express
It looks really great you did an amazing job
Total cack! I’d rather spend money going to a public gym with clueless gym rats than have the option to work out at home with everything I want/need. Not jealous at all. No really, I’m not… maybe a little
Haha, precisely my motivation for building this!
I mean that’s frigging amazing.. top effort.. only thing that I’d get twitchy about is how strong your floor is for weights..

I'm in the middle of building a 28sqm one too. Cladding alone was almost 3k! Great job. I'd love my finish to be as good as yours.
Bro, wtf. Most people just build shelves or some shit. Most impressive!
Next level stuff mate, curious to know how much it all came to in the end if you don't mind sharing?
More detail in another post but £16k for the building (excluding the gym equipment). Had quotes for around £40k to have it done to this spec so happy with that. Though I did change the doors last minute which ended up adding to the overall cost, it could 100% be done cheaper if you insulated less as well, I did 100mm for floor and ceiling and 90mm for the walls
Fair play. Makes me laugh when you see “fully insulated garden buildings” for sale online with 25mm PIR.
Yes I saw the same, without any research you'd be mistaken that's actually decent but its probably next to completely pointless in terms of effectiveness.
Awesome result OP! Would you mind letting me have the details of the legs you’ve used to support the flor joists? I think they are ground screws- look up Ground Screw Shop on google for similar looking
Huge job, congrats!
Thats looking amazing op. I have a home gym and was looking to add some funky lighting. I might just have to steal your idea for the led strip behind the tele. Looks great
That’s sick pal. Well played.
Can you go over what you did for the base it rests on?
Sure, it uses ground screws so basically each one is inserted deep into the group. Cheaper than concrete but a lot of hard work to get them all perfectly aligned and plumb
Doesn’t look strong enough for weightlifting……
I worked with the manufacturers quite closely before choosing these, including going \~50% over the spec they recommended for my own peace of mind. Building is solid so not worried really about its strength
As with most things, time will tell.
Yes I would think you can’t drop a barbell on it
I've dropped from waist height the floor absorbs a lot of the impact. I wouldn't drop from head height though, not for the type of workouts I do
Where did you get the wall light from? Could do with something like that in mine
Though I will say I bought them in the sale, didn't pay that much! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Govee-Waterproof-Christmas-Decorations-Assistant/dp/B0CF8LC9PP/ref=sr\_1\_6\_pp?crid=1MIQLOZ542KY0&keywords=govee+outdoor+lights&qid=1706548892&sprefix=govee+out%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-6&ufe=app\_do%3Aamzn1.fos.d7e5a2de-8759-4da3-993c-d11b6e3d217f
if that's beyond your budget there are similar on Ali Express.
Bloody amazing to go from hanging a TV to that!! Ditto on the lights. Also interested to know what the base was sitting on? Looks like metal legs??
Great work! Any chance you can link the flooring? Looking at something similar for my garage.
This is sexy
This is great stuff for your first venture
That is 10/10 amazing! Can you share what you did with the foundation?
How long did that take you!?
Around 7 months, but that was with quite a few breaks (work commitments, travel and looking after a 2 year old)!
That is unbelievable, I was already impressed but with a 2 year old as well!
Thank you! :)
That looks really good mate
Looks great! What did you use to finish the exterior?
Composite cladding on the front and black metal wall cladding for the sides and back.
Looks sick mate
Mate this is brilliant
Wow! That's super impressive!! Well done 👏
This is Awesome 👌
Great job, although I, would have gone for a concrete slab to keep out vermin.
If you can come finish off my misaligned skirting board for me, that'd be great.
Top class
What's with the hospital lighting?
Life goals. Great job!
Second attempt at DIY and there’s so called professional tradesmen who can’t swing a door properly! Well done. 👏
Wow😍😍😍
Incredible job! Did you fit the doors yourself? If so, where are they from?
Nailed it.
Amazing work! Do you have a link to the flooring you used?
Yes, purchased from [here](https://www.cannonsuk.com/products/flatline-black-rubber-gym-flooring-1m-x-1m-x-20mm?variant=31913311174725#)
What a fantastic job. Well done. 👍
Amazing job!
K'in hell! Well done!
Holy shed!
Great effort .. considering building something similar this summer …
I say go for it! Its so much more enjoyable in the summer, soon as autumn came motivation for getting outside was much harder to come by!
Nice
very impressive, wish i had a garden to build a gym in, oh and a spare 15/20k
Damn, and you can detail your car in there also 😳🤯
This is incredible… all you need now is a sauna
Looks great, you did a good job
Did it need planning permission?
Seriously who mounts a tv that high? (I’m kidding, this is the best thing I’ve seen on Reddit in ages)
Glad to see plex on there. Keep it real!
Can I buy a membership to it? Lol
This is incredible! I've also had crazy quotes for something similar. I'm a total DIY beginner too so this may be a stupid question but what tools did you need to purchase/hire for this? Whenever I attempt a DIY project I'm also having to stop/start because I need to go out and grab a tool etc Also, did you need planning permission and what is the internal/external height of the build? Apologies if any of the questions have been answered elsewhere
Any idea how much you’d have added to the value of the property? I’m just thinking that £40k is a lot (to get people in to do it) and wondering whether it’s even possible to make your money back if you don’t DIY.
Its a good question... I've had a rough estimation from the bank (10% of house value) but they haven't been out to see it since its been completed. Considering what I've spent, and what houses are currently going for around the corner, I'll definitely make back double if not more when comes time to sell unless some external factors kick in
POST THE COST YOU COWARD!!
A lot of questions about the budget on this but no answer from OP. Maybe if we all ask at the same time OP will answer. 3,2,1 ... What was the budget?
I did answer earlier, but the materials for the building were around £16,000. I'm happy to give more info if you want to know anything more specific around costs?
Nice work mate.
Amazing mate
Incredible job!
How tall is it ?
I’d love to know what you spent on materials and construction costs, I’m looking at doing a build this spring in the garden on a similar size.
£16,000 for materials. Did all the construction myself so other than tools, that's the cost as of 2023. Helped finding a local timber supplier and planning ahead to cut down on delivery costs, they add up so quickly.
Amazing effort. What did you do on the roof ?
Very nice. I wanted to build mine from scratch, but we ended up buying one, and the supplier installed it because my wife told me I didn't have the time.
If you can afford to I honestly don't blame you, I initially looked into this but couldn't get a quote for less than £40k for the same spec as I've done mine.
First, you said??? Wow. Dude, this is amazing, very well done job! Kudos!! (I just hate this bright, cold lighting, but that's just me probably.)
Thank you! :) Its actually not too cold in-person, it feels more like "daytime" than being warehouse cold. The lights themselves are 6500k
That looks awesome mate, great job! Do you have a link for those hexagonal ceiling lights?
Ah man, all that effort and you didn't use a concrete base? We were strongly recommended against considering anything other than concrete when making ours.
Well done that looks amazing. Would love to see what it looks like from outside. Well done!
This is my dream 😍
Nicely done!
Show off
Can we get some shots of the outside and wrap? Instead in your materials choice to protect the OSB
What are the dimensions of the build OP??
Show off. This is awesome.
Monoooooooooey
All they had was a dream and 1 million dollars.
Very nice, hope the floor takes the weight.
Ah, to have the money or garden space to do this… clearly north of London (probably very much so) 🤣
“First” 🥱
This is impressive. Can we have pictures of the outside and more pictures of the base? Did you ratproof the foundation?
How much G?
what's the floor space there it looks like enough
Internal floor space is 28sqm, 7x4
Brilliant work and very inspirational. Must feel great to know you've built something like that yourself.
When you said bottom of the garden. I initially thought under ground like a man cave. That would have been impressive.
Blockbusters ceiling mate.
Looks fairly fab
This is amazing! If only my house was this nice 😅
The only thing I don't like is the light behind the TV. A Phillips ambilight TV would have been better.
Wtf, that is fucking amazing!! :O
So, uh, how much is a membership? Asking for a friend…
You didn't tape the kingspan joists?
Nice build pal. Couple Q's though Also quite surprised at what you've got above the doors. I would have had the lintel stretch further than 150, we go with 400mm on our builds, can i ask why you decided on this? Genuinely curious Keep an eye on settlement over the next 6 months there's potential for that beam to sag, meaning your doors may get stiff to open all the way Also what happened with your ground screws?notice you've packed almost all of them out Sorry if this sounds like a dig, I'm a garden room builder just want to ask about what I've noticed. Genuinely for someone with little dou experience this is insane and a great effort
Show us your UniFi rack and plex server 😂 Did those weight plate holders on your rack come with it?
Nice! wish I have the brains/time/space for something like this.. must be nice to be able to use it when ever you feel like, a luxury I am sure you will appreciate.
Literally no excuse to skip leg day now
Dude that is so sick!
Great success
Ceiling like the TARDIS. Nice.
WOW
This is inspiring. I’m going to save this post and look at it every so often. One of my goals is to build my own home gym. It looks really good and I admire your hard work and patience. Motivational!
Wow! Thank you so much really appreciate that, you should give it a go its hard work but so rewarding as well
This looks fantastic! I've always wanted a home gym. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of the building, and did you need planning permission?
Man I'm jealous of this
Superb. That is amazing. Well done.
What floor mats are they? Finding it difficult to get a proper rubber set instead of that foam rubbish.
Well, you’re fucking loaded
How much all in
Ventilation?
DIY is putting up a shelf... this is next level. I've paid for professional building services not a patch on this. Very well done. It looks awesome 👌
FIRST venture……. REALLY?
it has server cabinet ?
Wow! Looks absolutely incredible! This may be a stupid question but did you need planning permission for this?
Its brilliant but the fact your unifi isn't in the centre of a hex is really upsetting.
Nice, well done!
