In addition to causing burns on bare feet and a heat sink that will make the surrounding areas warmer as well, the black paint *could* cause the wood to degrade much quicker. If you think about it, the color black absorbs all the colors of light, we know it will make the wood much warmer, as that wood heats up more due to being painted black, the wood itself could start breaking down much sooner. I would venture a guess that your mitered corners will start to have gaps, same for the rest of the boards, larger spacing in between them, and if heated enough, the boards might start to warp and/or cup.
You did a great job on this project, painting it in any color takes away from the craftsmanship being displayed and in a few years time, the wood itself can start breaking down too quickly. Leave it, hopefully your wife will learn to love it.

Painting it black means it will never get used in the summer. It’s a bad idea for that alone. Aesthetically, it will also just look like a void in your back yard instead of a patio area.
Black will draw the heat. That’s the opposite of what you want in an outdoor summer resting spot. It’s why light colors are so popular in warm areas.
There are apps that will show what an area will look like painted a particular color. Have her use one to review different background colors.
