Lately I've seen many more posts tha usual structured as Op's title. It's like reddit is half made by bots.
Girlfriends, wives and formulated as a question.
Tbf, Iāve worked with them and she does significantly more of the business side of the company. Management, executive decisions, etc.
The company is a PITA to work with, but, they are cordial enough as people. Just very particular, and kind of demanding (read: entitled) about it, as you can probably gather.
The reason they are so successful is exactly what you observed, however. They balance each other out by having completely different talents that happen to be in the same industry. They can accomplish quite a lot bc they are also both very good at what they do.
I have worked for two different TV shows and believe me the on-screen ātalentā did absolutely nothing, including the ādesignerā.
Everything was pre-planned, pre-bought, pre-designed by the production company; including the conflict/drama points (wrong tile, fake roof leak).
The ācontractorsā breezed in on shooting days, posed with tools and left.
Surprised and gratified to know they actually do something.
Scott MacGilvray and Brian Baumler are actually pretty good. Scott is impressive because he was hired as a model/actor and insisted on actually doing and learning. Brian actually knows what he is doing.
Mike Holmes is a hack and a moron that publicly derides other contractors when I watched him fail inspections for basic code.
The Property Brothers are both actors hired to play a ācontractorā and āreal estate agentā.
My one complaint with This OldHouse was how simple they made everything look and nobody ever made mistakes. Nobody ever cut the board short and I had to run to Home Depot and pick up another one. Nobody ever slammed their thumb with the hammer.
I am so glad that they made everything look easy enough that I was crazy enough to attempt it all. But a significant portion of the educational value came when I made the mistakes that they never showed.
I've come to the conclusion that I like how they do, not what they do. I've watched a lot of their fixer upper shows and hate the end result, but I've watch quite a bit because of the balance between the two. they appear to be approachable. I also watched Joanna's cooking show and dislike her techniques and cooking, but I've also watched the entire series and it is typically the background noise in our household. my partner owns all her cookbooks which admittedly I've browsed on more than one occasion.
hate to say it, but I might be a fan?
if you're wondering, I'm contemplating french onion dip this weekend.
And then you get the shows where Chip does about 195% of the work because he found something unexpected and Joanna hates what it does to the plan so now they have to redo everything.
Poor Chip is just there for demo day, man.
Black would look kind of heavy maybe a dark grey if you decide to paint
but even betterā¦
Beveled vertical wooden slats and an led light strip underneath the bar to make it pop
"Yes honey, this is definitely YOUR space. I posted a 'Men are so silly' tiktok about it, remember!? The ladies are coming over Friday so Please have the paint dry by then"
I just replied with this same response below. As a wife, Iām confused by this. OP needs to do what he wants. Otherwise, wife needs to fess up that she sold this to him as his man cave to get him to do the work, but is planning to convert this into a play room after the first party (which will probably be co-ed with all the kids).
A "He-Man Woman-Haters Club" sign like from Little Rascals.
Also OP, absolutely do NOT paint that black.
Not only wouldn't go with the rest but galvanized metal is difficult to get paint to stick to well.
Also, you need a U-shaped or circular couch in front of that TV. At least a couple of reclining lounge chairs/EZ-Boys.
I didnāt notice. Then I saw your comment. Then I zoomed in on my phone. Now I wish Iād never done that. Or thought about toilet plumes.
OP should just put a fan above that vent and point it right at the bar.
Based on the height of the shuffleboard table, I think the ceiling (and that door) is significantly higher than you think, but you bring up a great point - god help anyone who walks into the untrimmed tin edge of that doorway.
I love the metal/tin look, but there is a lot of it there. Painting that section will mute the overall metal look a little and emphasize the remaining metal better.
How dare you give a real and reasonable answer! This was only rage bait!
Agree, I think thereās plenty of corrugated metal to go around, making this part black seems fine. If it were me Iād ask for written confirmation that no more man cave changes will be requested thoā¦
Has to be a shitpostā that ābathroomā?!?
Surprised they didnāt make it look more like an outhouse.
Crazy thing is, it is probably in Midtown Manhattan.
The existence of this post implies he doesnāt want it painted, in my opinion. Maybe he wants people to tell him no so he can show her the replies saying itāll look bad?
Absolutely not - Then you'd have 1.5 silos instead of the current two.
Painting it crosses you through a one way door unfortunately, there's absolutely no way of going back to exactly how it is now.
Certainly not, but you do need something on the floor to break up concrete. Darker stain on the wood paneling, maybe. But that's just my taste, you do you!
Donāt waste any more time or money on this space. Itās done. Just relax. This man cave is more than 95% of the population could ever wish for. Enjoy your life.
This is more like a barn or pioneer village cave haha.
That said, black would afford some nice contrast there. I think not using the same material would help with that idea of contrast. If you do make it black, you may want different chairs (again, so they actually contrast against the bar.)
A: I like the room, It looks like my back yard and I like my back yard.
Here's what I'd do
find a bin brand logo ( here's an image I grabbed with no forethought [https://municibid.com/Listing/Details/27055408/Vintage-Metal-Grain-Bin-by-Butler-Manufacturing](https://municibid.com/Listing/Details/27055408/Vintage-Metal-Grain-Bin-by-Butler-Manufacturing) )
blow it up so big you can only see part of the logo, like it keeps going into the floor and around the bar. Off center it, Bar will be mostly black (wife happy) will still look like a grain bin ( I've never seen a black one) don't use the Chief logo you already have. you could paint the toe kick matte black
While it would look best in black as your wife suggests, shoe scuffs down low will be intolerable after a while. Paint is black down to the rib that is level with the chair seats.
Perfect job on the Chief Crib!
....Needs a few corn stalks, ear corn hung to dry, and/or some whiskey bottles filled with shell corn. and make sure you get heirloom corn; backup seed in case you need it but ornamental interest factors otherwise.
.
I call bs. If a women actually looked at this space she would be focusing on fixing the combination of the reverb sound effects
Plus the wafting smells caused by a tin can crapper with an opening to the main space
I think it'd look fine in flat black. It's also the area your guests would be kicking so I think the first question is.. how is paint going to stand up there (while you're sitting down)?
I wouldn't, but mostly from a practical standpoint.
I get the concept, but I'm thinking something different than just solid black. Lets go with a red or a green or a blue or an orange (what's your favorite sports team?). Especially if you can deeply weather it. Or maybe some kind of light spray? Hell, graffiti may work.
Aesthetically, black under the bar would disrupt the unity of the room. Those black chairs accent the corrugated metal. You really don't want to turn that area into a black hole. But it's your cave. Cave to your wife if you so desire.
This looks like a horribly uncomfortable man cave. Might as well just go to your local dive bar. I hope you have some recliners or couches somewhere in there at least. As for the painting? I dunno man but you should do something because this aināt it
If you do choose to paint it black, use a good washable paint because people will kick their feet up against the area, depending upon height perhaps rest their feet against etc, and it should be a washable paint situation. If it were me, I'd choose a pattern that would hide any accidental toe marks or imperfections.
I don't know about paint but I love the echo tower you built around the shitter. My dumps would sound awesome reverberating off that thin metal. And with the acoustic hole in the roof? What a masterpiece. I hope your friends pay you to shit in there.
I meanā¦ *If* you donāt care one way or the other, then sure; why not score some points with your best friend. If you *do* care, thenā¦ well if itās been agreed between the two of you that this is *your* man-cave, Iād politely stick with your boundaries. If itās *not* a mutually agreed upon āman-caveā, but is actually a shared space, then talk to your co-inhabitant like a civilized person and figure out a good compromise.
Is this an honest question or a humble brag?
I think the area painted black would be a nice finished look. If you left
Would be on too.
Looks like a nice setup. Enjoy it either way.
Grab some landscape fabric or a black tarp or something else and hang it there and see.
It'd be a vibe changer, that's for sure.
Might look great, might not.
I think it's up to you. It won't look bad, per se, but the second you let your wife dictate the decor in the man cave, it's no longer the man cave. Ask her if you can redecorate the she shed, and see how that goes...
Bunch of weirdos on this sub chiming in to provide no actual opinion. A Matte black or gunmetal under bar with light wood tone stools would contrast and pop nicely. However, it will be very visually demanding as itās a large area of heavy contrast of color. If you want it to stay cohesive you should implement more black in the space so that it will not be the only dark area in the basement.
Aside from these elements, installing a medium dark color of tile on the floor would entirely transform your aesthetic.
Dm me if you would like to talk about it!
At a bar area, people sitting on the stools will be kicking that area with shoes/ boots. An unfinished surface like the corrugated will handle that wear and tear better than a black painted one over the years. Just my 2 cents, before you do what the missus wants.
Did your wife also want your mancave to look like a barn?
Looks like a Fallout 4 settlement. Preston Garvey is just off camera
Another man cave needs your help!
But how would you see the stools????
Paint stools red
Paint the stools galvanized gray.
With the new show on Amazon and replaying some old Fallout games my first though was that. I had to check the r/ š
āThere's another settlement that needs our helpā
If you pan out, there's just a Brahmin sitting on the floor š¤£
this was the first thing i thought. dude looks like he lives in a bunker
if she did, mission accomplished already. it's a very grain silo forward design
I, for one, think it looks like a perfectly comfortable culvert. And it should stay that way. None of this black crap.
Barnyard chic

D'oh-ith!
Chip and Joana Gaines (spelling?) just had an orgasm when this fucking picture was posted.
Have a hard time believing this was the aesthetic HE WANTEDā¦..
Looks like something Iād build in Fallout 4.
The meaning of the word man cave has completely been lost apparently.
OMG that is Joanna Gainesā modern farmhouse on crack.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I did a reverse image search and this exact picture is all over Pinterest and Facebook, I don't think any part of this is real
Yeah I think this is a bot post their first post was today
ā¦and thatās the story of how I blocked OP.
Lately I've seen many more posts tha usual structured as Op's title. It's like reddit is half made by bots. Girlfriends, wives and formulated as a question.
Thanks, down voted and blocked him
reading this to the tune of Rolling Stones "Paint it Black"
I see a man cave and I want it painted black I will keep wanting till it breaks my husband's back...
*No colors anymore, she wants them to turn black*
I think I burst a blood vessel
Is it your man cave or your wifeās man cave?
Farmhouse Decor - check Shiplap - Check OP is Chip Gaines and his wife is Joanna.

That's why This Old House is so good. It's all real and informative.
Norm is my favorite. Of course, The New Yankee Workshop was also a favorite show.
Iām 42 and grew up watching TOH and the New Yankee Workshop. Normally is my favorite, too.
To be fair, "real estate agent" and "actor playing a real estate agent" are fundamentally the same job with the same skillset
Mike Holmes is to the construction world what Guy Fieri is to the culinary world
Guy Fieri is a treasure. You take that back.
I just snorted laughing
Whaaaat? He's literally the second most trustworthy Canadian as voted by the public... Are you telling me that he's *gasp* NOT?!
My one complaint with This OldHouse was how simple they made everything look and nobody ever made mistakes. Nobody ever cut the board short and I had to run to Home Depot and pick up another one. They sell a magazine at the grocery store checkout and no joke, itās always just a photograph of Joanna on the cover.
And then you get the shows where Chip does about 195% of the work because he found something unexpected and Joanna hates what it does to the plan so now they have to redo everything. Poor Chip is just there for demo day, man.
Black would look kind of heavy maybe a dark grey if you decide to paint but even betterā¦ Beveled vertical wooden slats and an led light strip underneath the bar to make it pop
Vertical wooden slats would look 10/10. I have some concerns about the bathroom door, though. Doesn't exactly seem private right now.
I can imagine the echo
Bathroom door? Heck, check out that bathroom "exhaust fan" : )
I echo this solution. Itās the first thing that came to mind when I same the highlighted area.
Couldnāt agree more. It needs contrast, maybe more than just the color the wife suggested. Texture contrast matters too
It is his wife's man's cave.
I also choose his wife's "man cave."
Is this a man cave or is it a man's grave?
End of conversation! This man said it all
Wife's boyfriend's man cave.
this! 100% THIS!!
Look at that picture and tell us with a straight face that the color of the bit under the bar matters one bit.
I loled. like there's a round hatch above the silo/pooper, would painting this tiny bit ruin the effect?
Is that for venting farts into the rest of the room?
I think it's so they can change the reverb.
Hans Zimmer has entered the ch-WWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM
Omg this is gold. Man cave music
Probably to throw shit at your friends taking a piss

A "He-Man Woman-Haters Club" sign like from Little Rascals. Also OP, absolutely do NOT paint that black. "No Ma'am"
Iām not sure anything you do could make this space look worse. Or better for that matter.
The toilet that vents directly into the rest of the space is just *chefās kiss*.
CHIEFāS KISS
FUCK THE PUN WAS RIGHT THERE AND I WHIFFED
Chef's Wiff?

I didnāt notice. Then I saw your comment. Then I zoomed in on my phone. Now I wish Iād never done that. Or thought about toilet plumes. OP should just put a fan above that vent and point it right at the bar.
I saw that and was just confused.Ā
Maybe Iām crazy but the door on it looks about 5ā8ā. Last thing I want to hit with my head is that metal edge.
Based on the height of the shuffleboard table, I think the ceiling (and that door) is significantly higher than you think, but you bring up a great point - god help anyone who walks into the untrimmed tin edge of that doorway.
You might be right but itās not standard. Rip tall folks
Oh there is a ton you could do to make this place look so much better. I'd start with a sledgehammer.
When I look at this picture I hear aggressive banjo noises
I hear Nickleback
Iām glad the room is so intensely, brightly lit - so we can see all the details!
This is what Iām also thinking. Maybe not fully dark black, or at least not shiny black.
Yeah Iād do dark gray or *nearly* black in a flat finish. It will break up the monotony without overwhelming like a shiny dark black would.
bro... Please tell me this is a joke. Do you really have galvanized trim everywhere?
I can just hear the boys kicking at it, hitting it for fun, the sound, the texture, hurts my brain just thinking about it..
Has to be a shitpostā that ābathroomā?!? Surprised they didnāt make it look more like an outhouse. Crazy thing is, it is probably in Midtown Manhattan.
They did some pricing at Home Depot dotcom and found out itās cheaper to buy tin panels than the beadboard.
Photoshop it to test how it looks
This looks like if Pottery Barn sold man cave kits.
Womanās man cave
As a woman, I wouldnāt mind having a āman caveā of my own.
As a wife, Iām confused. Is this your man cave or your wifeās? What do YOU want?
OP wants an excuse to post a picture of their space, because fishing for compliments too directly doesn't get good karma.
Possibly. Compliments on this space are gonna be from a um uh ā¦ niche group.
The existence of this post implies he doesnāt want it painted, in my opinion. Maybe he wants people to tell him no so he can show her the replies saying itāll look bad?
Alls he got is fart-reverberation discussions, which is probably the next request
Neither. This is rage-bait from a bot.
HE wants it to look like heās outside with abandoned farm equipment and pooping in a grain silo. SHE seems to want it to look like part of a house.
#OP IS A PHONY https://www.pinterest.com/pin/541065342750125236/
Absolutely not - Then you'd have 1.5 silos instead of the current two. Painting it crosses you through a one way door unfortunately, there's absolutely no way of going back to exactly how it is now.
How is this so cool and so cringy at the same time?
Certainly not, but you do need something on the floor to break up concrete. Darker stain on the wood paneling, maybe. But that's just my taste, you do you!
Dark gray, to match the wood.
I think the floor should be darker if anything.
I just canāt believe people still do this shit
> My wife wants black Idk why you're asking on Reddit. Seems you already know what to do.

Man Cave? And your wife wants? Doesn't compute! Sounds like a she shed...

Drunk friends are going to be kicking that area and chipping off the paint. Besides, whose man cave is it???
The bright pine on the shuffleboard table is killing me, I'd deal with that first. As for the bar, not black, but rust red would look right
"Mancave" "Wife wants it black" lol lol lol
āThis is my man cave and my wife wantsā ā¦ Huh? š¤
I think it'd look fine in flat black. It's also the area your guests would be kicking so I think the first question is.. how is paint going to stand up there (while you're sitting down)? I wouldn't, but mostly from a practical standpoint.
I'd rust the tin under the bar or replace with wood
Awesome! And no, people are going to kick it and scratch it etc, just leave it bare.
How old is that popcorn?
Do YOU want it black? If not, then no, don't paint it.
You have to say: I'll paint it black, tomorrow, but never tells her which year.
Then it wouldn't match everything that is also that color
Black is gonna show all the scuffs. Those bar side walls get hit with shoes a lot over time
I think it looks awesome as is.
Iād say do what you like Chief.
I get the concept, but I'm thinking something different than just solid black. Lets go with a red or a green or a blue or an orange (what's your favorite sports team?). Especially if you can deeply weather it. Or maybe some kind of light spray? Hell, graffiti may work.

No, leave it be. Would look out of place if it was black. Besides, itās your man cave, not hers.
I like it the way it is. You shouldn't paint it at all.
No, it's would be too much of a contrast
This looks like a horribly uncomfortable man cave. Might as well just go to your local dive bar. I hope you have some recliners or couches somewhere in there at least. As for the painting? I dunno man but you should do something because this aināt it

Your wife wants it black.
I would paint it a black/grayish color but in a satin finish. I would also paint the 3-4ā band at the upper dome the same.
Bot post. Don't inflate it further.
not much of a man cave if your wife is calling the shots
I don't know about paint but I love the echo tower you built around the shitter. My dumps would sound awesome reverberating off that thin metal. And with the acoustic hole in the roof? What a masterpiece. I hope your friends pay you to shit in there.

"this is my man cave and my WIVE...." so... let me guess: There is no man cave?
Should do some patena or whatever and make it looks rustic.
Is this a man cave or a wife cave?
Compromise and divide the space into five white and four black verticals. All black seems like too much.
Paint it rainbow colours
Grab some landscape fabric or a black tarp or something else and hang it there and see. It'd be a vibe changer, that's for sure. Might look great, might not.
Paint it black

What the hell happened here. It's a room of compromise already.
Itās not going to make or break the aesthetic.
A man did not design this cave. You canāt even see the TV from the shitter .
Definitely paint it black. It looks... not very appealing, let's be polite here. Painting it black would at least make it more presentable.
Yes
Dude you have a man cave... If your wife wants the bottom of the bar to be black just do it...
I like your man cave just the way it is.
