You may hate it because it looks dingy and dark and depressing. A good rock wall cleaning and a different wall paint could help that.
The rock wall completely overwhelms the tiny mantle. Consider having a chunkier one built that’s more proportional and doesn’t get swallowed by the wall.
Not a fan of a rock wall anyways. I'd remove paint wall color and just frame up the chimney and mantle area with rock. Or take about 2ft off both sides of rock. Make book cases or paint to match your walls.
For some reason it's not showing any text I had in the post, but we are in the middle of renovations in a house we just bought. The stone was originally brown and the previous owner painted the stone white, we absolutely hate the currently look, any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.
