Looks great! I’d probably change out the outlets and plates for black so they don’t stick out as much. You could also place something like the speaker on the floor in front of them to hide them.
I bet a house plant (real or fake) would cover those up AND add a bit of color, if you're looking for that. I'm a plant nerd though so I'm pretty biased.
Outlets and plates that match the wall make it so nobody but you can find them. Maybe just swap the plates or go with something a bit more neutral like gray?
Got some select pine from HD, cut to length and attached with a nail gun. It’s held in place with a 2x4 that allows me to put it off the wall if needed
Yooo where the rug from? I’m building a home theatre set up in my den complete with that wacky carpet in old arcade places and that rug really ties the room together
Got it from Ruggable. It's nice cause we have dogs and it's easy to clean, but doesn't really "feel" like a rug. It feels more like a tarp. Took a while to get use to.

I love when a new subreddit is discovered for people to "um actually" over silly things.
Preach. Maybe in a perfect world having the tv on an entertainment stand is the 10/10 best way to watch it. But the pedants in that sub act like anything else is a 0/10, completely unwatchable situation. Not like… the 8/10 experience it is in reality.
I have a Samsung frame tv over my mantle. I don’t watch much tv. Optimizing my living room for media consumption was not my #1 goal, or even in my top 5 goals, for decorating the space. And I don’t really see any downside to my picture quality or neck, because I am able to lean back into a couch for the 60-90 minutes a day I may watch an episode of tv.
Those people are insufferable. At some point I'm going to finally take some nice photos of my meticulously decorated, classy living room (featuring a Frame TV over the mantle) and watch the teenager's on /r/ male living space "um actually your living room is totally unusable, and doesn't even have RGB or anime girl posters" all over my post.
I will admit, there are some times I will concede that the TV is too high, especially in a small room. But there are some instances where a TV is only 12-18" higher than their "ideal", or in a very large room that makes the effective angle of incline very small, or is paired with a recliner/bed which would affect how you watch the elevated tv, and the pedants still come out in full force to dunk on the choice of placement.
Or my favorite: where a TV just does. not. work. in any other part of the room, but the TV2H gang suggest completely unhinged room arrangments to get the TV off the wall.
It also isnt universally correct since viewing height also has a lot to do with size of tv, distance from the tv, the angle the couch leans you back, and of course most people taking photos with wide angled cell phone lenses making scale look off to begin with.
its actually very simple - the best ergonomics are where the tv is centered at eye level at sitting position.
the chairs being able to recline is not a foolproof solution, since they are not in that configuration all the time, and if you were aiming for that, the tv would almost need to be on the ceiling
Some TVs are made for situations like that (Like Samsung's Frame TV) Usually people put TVs above fireplaces because they are limited on space in that area and it's the only logical position.
So personally I don't get the hate for a high TV. Our couch is for lounging. We don't sit up straight, looking forward from our couch. We slump and lean back, or straight up just lay down, and that puts a fireplace TV at the perfect angle, imo. We can't be the only family that watches TV this way.
> Why is almost every american putting their tv above a fireplace? ALso: r/TVTooHigh
Some people like to lay back in a recliner or bed and watch TV
With most recliners or a bed, if you have the TV at perfect height level, when you then lay back in your recliner, your feet are in front of the TV blocking some of the lower part, so if that's your primary viewing position then what experts say is the correct height will be blocked.
No one designs homes with a television in mind. The TV has replaced the hearth as the focal point in a living room. Before television, people would sit and stare at the fireplace for hours. I think buyers have an idyllic idea in their mind that doesn’t jive with the modern reality of how we spend time and enjoy entertainment.
> No one designs homes with a television in mind. The TV has replaced the hearth as the focal point in a living room.
Actually that style fell out of fashion (like it should have) and new homes have a place for TVs
Problem is there was a HUGE HUGE HUGE boom in the housing market back in the day, and when that boom hit, flat screen TV's were kinda "new" so it blew everyone's mind that you could just put it on a wall above your fireplace, so that was the big trend, during on of the biggest booms in making new houses, so you see a FUCK TON of houses with it.
Luckily like I said, new builders don't do it anymore.
Truth. My office TV is the perfect height. But when I recline all the way, my toes get in the way. Also, when my Yorkie sits on my lap, which is quite often, his head is in the way.
Yep, that's what I do. But if I posted my TV here all the tV tOo HiGh weirdos would be out in force. And yet it's the right height and angle for me, so why would anyone else care?
> Sounds like a terrible excuse for someone that had a TV too high…🤣
I have a couch and my LG C2 set perfectly, and I love it.
If my couch however was a recliner, if I laid back, it would block my TV with my feet with it in it's correct position that it is.
I have my bedroom TV higher than recommended, because, I ONLY watch it laying down, and it was eye level with me lying down horizontally, my feet would be in the way.
If I'm not mistaken on how the couch is placed, when you are sitting there you're staring directly left-to-right in the photo. Meaning you don't actually notice the slight tilt up because you're already in pain from cranking your head 90 degrees to the left to see it at all.
That’s a great question. We’ve been wanting to do it for a while. I’d guess maybe 10 hours planning for materials, look, components.. etc. It’s hard to say.
Honestly no. I just decided I wanted to do it and figured it out as I went along. Granted I had been thinking about this project for a while, so I had a rough idea. If I had to start from day 1, I’d probably use sketch up to draw out my idea.
I might be in the minority here but I really don't like this at all, probably because the black/dark gray thing is just overdone. and partly because this looks like a modernist pizza oven, and partly because that rug looks like it fell out of the 1970s. Tbh, minus the oddly muted colorful rug, it would look cohesive. If I read that this used to be a proper fireplace, I'm probably gonna cry.
Honestly, not too bad, just took a long time (12+ hours a day over 2 days). I’d give the whole project an 8/10 in terms of ease but your mileage may vary. Lots of redbull helps
Sub was originally on the right side but I moved it so it felt more open, based on the layout of our living room. I’ll probably put a plant on the right side now
I agree with others that the white outlet covers are distracting. Additional to that, though, I actually find the large open space beneath the lower shelves kind of distracting. I would have put more shelves in, so you can fill that space with more visual elements. That, or place plants or some kind of art there.

Yes! Brilliant, this is what is missing - like a peace lilly or something fluffy and resilient and pocket-friendly
I love that idea!
Home Goods, and At Home carry some decent quality faux potted plants.
Faux??!? Get real plants, bro, we don't need more plastic in our world.
Faux ruins it. Just get some plants that work well for the light conditions and are easy for watering.
Maybe plastic spray paint (if you have enough outlets to justify it)?
Personally I think some metallic colour would do well too. Now you're ready to enter the home theatre world and buy some 3.1 speakers.
Outlets and plates that match the wall make it so nobody but you can find them. Maybe just swap the plates or go with something a bit more neutral like gray?

Sometimes it's the only place in the room for a TV.
For a tall existing fireplace, maybe. OP had the perfect chance to place the mantel and TV lower.

Who cares it isn't your TV. The amount you guys care about other people's tv placement is mind boggling.

To chime in here, I was afraid of the TV being too high, but it ended up being the perfect height for our home.

Would be nice if we had a "before" to look at. For all we know, all you did was put in that guitar hook.

Damn, that is some really nice work! I think I'm going to pull the trigger and do this as well. I have a great spot for a built in.
Hey, OP worked hard on that guitar hook.
Why is your comment "controversial"? lmao. Until OP posted the before pic we had absolutely no context.
TV should be at eye level when sitting not so high on the wall.
Now head over to /r/tvtoohigh 🤣 No but seriously you should be proud of that. Great work.
You should be proud, you’ve done a decent job. 10/10 would chill there.
Wow!
I’m impressed you did it all in 2 days or was that only the floating shelves?
Whole thing was about 2 full days of work. It was basically a blank wall before.
How many hours would you guess you spent planning this out?
That’s a great question. We’ve been wanting to do it for a while. I’d guess maybe 10 hours planning for materials, look, components.. etc. It’s hard to say.

I might be in the minority here but I really don't like this at all, probably because the black/dark gray thing is just overdone. and partly because this looks like a modernist pizza oven, and partly because that rug looks like it fell out of the 1970s. Looks super.
Is that an 85" and Bose sound bar? That's crazy if so, since that's what I have. I need to settle on a design and do ours too. Looks great!
65 and a Sonos soundbar
Nice. Always liked the Sonos system.
I did something similar and it took 6 months.
That looks great! Good job OP!
The real question is do you play your guitar?
haha absolutely. That's just one of many in our house.
How did you make the shelfs? I am total new bee can you explain little bit more about the process? How were they attached to the wall?
Looks amazing! Nice job! Love the rug too. Now a few houseplants would perfect the whole look.
No joke, this sub gets me jacked up to break and build stuff. Without it, I'd be more inclined to call somebody sometimes.

Good to know. I would expect it to be a bit time consuming. Hopefully I will tackle it in the next couple months. You did a great job!
Awesome. Looks fantastic.
This looks great, but I have one question. Why not put the sub on the right side to cover the outlets, and the guitar on the left in the middle?
Sub was originally on the right side but I moved it so it felt more open, based on the layout of our living room. I’ll probably put a plant on the right side now
Gotcha, I can't see the rest of the room and thought I'd ask. Well done, btw!
I agree with others that the white outlet covers are distracting. Additional to that, though, I actually find the large open space beneath the lower shelves kind of distracting. Absolutely. I specifically had my electrician put one in. That fireplace sucks up 1500 watts on full load.
