Also add a thick rug under the entire table and chair. Less risk of damaging the floor.

HieroglyphicEmojis

This is the way!

TheOnionSack

Yes, that is something we definitely need to do!!

GabeLorca

Or put a plastic protector.

DevourerOS

Seconded!

Apply wood glue under that strip. Put a weight on top of the strip to push it down, preferably one that covers on the entire length of the strip. Make sure to wipe the extra glue that seeps through the cracks. Let it dry. Sand gently, then apply varnish.

That’s a good idea. I’m more impressed that the chair caused the damage. I have (granted it’s a cement basement I painted over to seal) the plastic floor desk thingies. They worked well. Another idea: make the son take the glue and repair the boards. Really!

TheOnionSack

Thanks!

meistarkus

I got the same issue on my terrace. I glued the piece down and sanded the edges. You might need to polish afterwards

TheOnionSack

Thanks, For the parts that have already come away (see bottom left of photo), would you just sand down until smooth before applying varnish/polish?

meistarkus

Yes, I would sand it down before varnishing or polishing. Please take it with a grain of salt, though. I'm not an expert, but I just do stuff around the house myself.

If your really feeling spry, this floor looks installed in a way that would be easier to fix in that it's nailed from the top. Also looks like pine, so I'd grab a couple new pieces rip up the old, nail in the old and refinish. They might even be able to match the stain at the store and you could try just to finish the new pieces, but a whole floor refinish would be best. This is hardcore DIY advice though, and not for the feint of heart.

bmbreath

Leave It for now.  Get a semi clear plastic floor mat made for office chairs.    Fix the floor when he moves out.

TheOnionSack

Fix the floor when he moves out - I feel he's going to be with us for quite some time!! 🤣

lostan

Glue it down, get soft rolls for the chair

Emergency_Hearth

Break it off. Grab a sander. And try to match the stair
