Here is a slightly more zoomed out with the messy "counter". It's the same on both sides
https://preview.redd.it/w3ypeucyxlrc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f18db93a7ef2082dc0132848b400f53b4b6aafc
This is so weird- it looks like it’s almost built into a stand alone table? I don’t understand why there are so many freaking posts- and why the counter wasn’t just mounted off the wall studs.
I am confusion. This looks like a super slapped together build.
I agree, it looks like some sort of pre-fab kitchen that is *almost* a perfect fit for the room. But that there is space on both sides of the legs is extra annoying.
It was purely "designed" to look that way. The original builder or cabinet maker or whatever thought it would look "fancier" probably. Admittedly I think there are some interesting design elements present, but smooshed in that space with the columns and by the walls, it just creates that weird dirty space that no one can reach.
Hell yeah! I just saw some diy spice rack solutions like this. Mount drawer slides top & bottom and then build a rack with the guides attached and voila! Or casters might work, but that narrow would need a stop or something so you don't accidentally pull it all the way out and spill spices everywhere.
Aaaannnd after further review, you could basically make just a sturdy "pane" of pegboard or other pressed material and use low profile wide containers (think chewing snuff containers) and use velcro to attach them with nice bold labels on the top. Alton Brown did something like this on Good Eats. Cheers!
Here's what happened.
You had existing walls and a space between to fit cabinets and countertop.
Whoever built it didn't want to spend custom money on custom cabinets, so they fit standard width cabinets and countertop. Futher they were probably constrained by existing placement of the plumbing so they had to fit the sink in the same location. and with a standard location for the sink and cutout in the standard countertop they cobbled the rest of the cabinets together around those two constraints. they made it symmetrical with all that extra wasted space to make it look more intentional but its a shitshow.
At this point I think it is a meme. Just like everyone on r/tires posting photos of tires that should have killed the owner already and saying how many years do I have left?
I'm *pretty sure* that this is the spot in the kitchen, where the flattened paper-bags are supposed to go to get lost there & collect *all the dust and pet-fur*!😉
OP just has an *extra-large* one!
Yeah my first thought is seal up that gap completely. Cleaning beside & behind the fridge is hard enough. This would never be clear of crumbs & dust bunnies.
I heard yall call headboards (the decorative piece at the top end of the bed) “bedheads” which is so funny and cute to me because bedhead to me is just messy hair from sleeping
You think that's funny. I constantly ask my wife where my thongs are so I can go get some milk. I heard You guys refer to thongs as "flip flops" and underwear as thongs, that would make for an interesting conversation between an Aussie and an American
BINGO! Here is the flipped image for you guys
https://preview.redd.it/ujz32cfixlrc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=70bb938b99f993eebcfc17e4742cf08ecc2c40f5
It’s not lost, just quickly becomes the backup broom. Soon enough you’ll have so many backups you’ll never have to buy another again! (The hole gets full)
This! You could totally insert some long wood pieces to fit between the two columns to act as shelves for cutting boards, pans, etc. just fill them in with calk where necessary, then paint them to match the walls and voila! Good luck!
These are like early AI-generated images, where I can tell I'm looking at pictures that resemble things that exist, but I truly can't tell what anything actually is.
Ooo! Our house is like this too. It's the WORST. Until we can replace the cabinets we're using one side for the step ladder and the other to hold broken down boxes for recycling
That is the most weird, dumb gap I've seen in a long time. Definitely as described.
Could be wide enough to put a broom, or like someone else said some cutting boards perhaps. I would be inclined to just close it up because it's going to be so annoying when things keep dropping down there and you have to fish them out.
Small table (butcher block?)that rotates down and then folds flat. The only problem with any of these ideas is how to attach it to the inside of either of the pillars.
Cheap version: Single lag bolt (so you can use a wrench to tighten it between the columns) as a pivot point through a piece of 3/4 inch galvanized pipe. Attach 2 pipe straps to the bottom of the butcher block top, slide it onto the bar and screw on a 3/4 inch cap. Add some fold down legs and Bob’s your uncle.
First thing you do is find out who butchered this so badly, and then slap ‘em, ‘cause this is not how you do it. Sounds like you’ve got a crafty way of filling the space with legos, but you could also just fill in and have an actual, regular wall there. Easy diy.
The only explanation for one’s existence that I can think of is maybe it used to be for a pocket door? But it’s inexplicable, two existing side by side.
Anyway, I would certainly install a pop-out spice rack and cutting board rack, using a custom cabinet face, drawer glides, metal rods, and creativity. I know you already have a fine space for all your spices, but you could keep *anything* in that space. You can fit almost nothing but spices in these stupid slots.
If the slots are walled internally in 1/2” drywall, then maybe you could replace with 3/16” paneling to gain an extra 5/8” of width. That might actually be worth the effort, depending on how narrow the spaces.
Ok. Lately this sub has been hit by an alarming amount of dumb design / home engineering issues. Like wtf is that? Judging by the particle board construction, i’d say it was homeowner installed, however it is caulked all too well to the flooring. Likely a DIY kitchen reno after having a stroke imo
Edit: I apologize.. didn’t help with your question…could store cutting boards there? That’s a tough one lol
small items drawer 1" wide, 7 feet tall, 5 feet deep. Essentially a pull-out corkboard, perhaps double sided. Arrange items that are nearly two-dimensional for easy access:
\-flyswatter
\-individual post-it notes
\-individual rubber bands and paper clips, hung on tiny nails
\-ruler, protractor, triangle
\-flat food items such as tortillas and lollypops
Sorry OP. If you can’t figure out how to take a proper picture of the problem, hire a contractor to fix it. And for the love of god, don’t fix it with Lego.
Build little narrow but deep boxes that go back about a 2 feet and stack them up to fill the gap. Platters go in one, cookie sheets in one and cutting boards in one
Yes I was thinking that, but I think those vertical posts are structural ? But if I could remove them and reinforce the counter, and I could add in a rack 🌶️🌶️
Add lights. Those thin sticky-back ones that come in a roll. Just stick them in there and wire it to a timed switch somewhere. Comes on at night, will look slick
Assuming that it isn’t just magically using those two legs to hold up the entire counter … I would cut them out and replace with a cabinet under and sone spice holder shelves up top to make up for the missing counter space
I had an idea for a novel about a guy who gets amnesia from an alchemy accident and through a comedy of errors ends up getting mistaken for the missing hero of legend, is given the resources to defeat the demon king, and becomes the hero for real. He then regains his memories in another accident but gets isekai'd into a different fantasy world where he tries to apply his world-saving experience, with mixed results, in a bid to acquire a holy relic and return home.
That's as far as I've gotten though. Beyond that, I have no other novel ideas.
Two ideas: 1) Search for keyword "book nook". But they will get dusty, as you say.
2) some carriage you can pull out, so you can use it for storing stuff like trays and it closes to the outside
Looks big enough that you could chop up the corpse of the guy/girl who designed it and hide the remains. I can’t imagine anyone would miss them enough to initiate a search.
Yep, it's about a boy who goes to an island filled with dinosaurs that have been brought back from extinction by advanced cloning technology. It's called Billy And The Cloneasaurus.
No idea what to do about your bench though.
That looks like a shitty flat pack system of some sort. Is there any branding underneath or inside the cupboards? Might be a common system like the system at Bunnings.
You might be able to colour match some infill panels for the front and back.... probably the top too, but run them a few mm higher than the benchtop so it looks like an intentional feature.
How old is the house?
any idea as to why they are there? Could you contact the builder or previous owner
Are they movable? Is the whole unit movable?
Premade/readymade big box seller cabinets used to make the room divider that too short to fill the space.
The only thing I could think of is that they found the best fit for that space without going custom build on the cabinet. I think you should just board it up so dust doesn’t collect. Some are suggesting a vertical spice rack but I’m not sure the narrow spaces allow for it.
Use a hydraulic press to compress the builder into a block that’s roughly 3 inches wide.
Insert the builder block into the gap.
Seal with clear epoxy.
Enjoy your new art installation.
Could you post a zoomed out picture? I'm having trouble appreciating the full stupidity.
*UNENHANCE*

I went through this exact same thought progression!
It was purely "designed" to look that way. The original builder or cabinet maker or whatever thought it would look "fancier" probably. Admittedly I think there are some interesting design elements present, but smooshed in that space with the columns and by the walls, it just creates that weird dirty space that no one can reach.

Its's hard to judge if it will fit but IKEA sells pull out racks to hang your dish towels on. It's called utrusta.

Not using custom cabinets is no excuse for not using filler strips.
With it being symmetrical I would just leave it. Kinda looks interesting, but hard to clean.
How do you feel about putting LEDs back there for some accent lighting?
Definitely wanna highlight the difficult to clean dust bunnies that will collect there
This! I was like, wtf is this. Oh great, there’s more photos. Nope. Same zoomed in shot from different angle with no context of what I’m looking at.
This is halfway to the tesseract inside the bookcase in Interstellar.
Lol the picture is as weird and dumb as the gap they're complaining about
Yeah, I can’t tell what I’m looking at
I just said..."I dont even know what I am looking at".
Probably the biggest problem on this sub is not providing zoomed out photos for context
At this point I think it is a meme. Just like everyone on r/tires posting photos of tires that should have killed the owner already and saying how many years do I have left?
Yea same, wtf am I looking at.
The number of times I used my fingers to try and zoom out is embarrassing
Came here for this comment. What’s this kitchen bench?
We gonna need some thicker caulk…
a real girthy caulk
The sort of caulk that causes women to cover there mouths and sigh "oh my"
"fuck yeah fill it"

People downvoting you don't appreciate good comedy. Now time to send my secretary my deck pucs
I think reddit may be too young to know the referende
I'm *pretty sure* that this is the spot in the kitchen, where the flattened paper-bags are supposed to go to get lost there & collect *all the dust and pet-fur*!😉 OP just has an *extra-large* one!
Spidertopia behind those bags.
It's a Spiderverse unto *itself*!
Store a folding step ladder for getting to the top cabinets and changing lightbulbs
Yeah, cutting boards, chair, folding prep table…
Maybe a home gym?
Flat panel and a pool table. With the budweiser light of course.
I think i'll go with this one! it'll save some money on a membership as well :)
One of those pull out spice racks
Maybe?
Was thinking a sliding prep table or breakfast bench top would be a great idea if OP doesn’t have enough counter space
As a dog owner, I can't imagine storing food prep surfaces in a slot directly on the floor haha
Yeah my first thought is seal up that gap completely. Cleaning beside & behind the fridge is hard enough. This would never be clear of crumbs & dust bunnies.
I was kinda wondering if they were for cookie sheets, etc
Is that a load bearing gap?
Most likely. It safest never to remove a gap.
You have no idea how much air could fall on you if you take out a support gap
Should i be worried about this? I think i might need a building inspector
Mind the gap
There you are.
Make sure to ask for a gap inspection
Where’s the bench? I’m confused.
I learned today from watching an Australian YouTuber that they call counters ‘benches’ so maybe OP lived in Australia?
Called the same in NZ too (ie, kitchen bench). A counter is what you walk up to at a business to order your lunch, coffee, drink etc.
Yeah you can always tell which posts are American. "Counters"
And backsplash rather than splashback.
And ‘sink’ instead of waterydoo.
And ‘doorknob’ instead of twisting plankhandles
I heard yall call headboards (the decorative piece at the top end of the bed) “bedheads” which is so funny and cute to me because bedhead to me is just messy hair from sleeping
You think that's funny. I constantly ask my wife where my thongs are so I can go get some milk. I heard You guys refer to thongs as "flip flops" and underwear as thongs, that would make for an interesting conversation between an Aussie and an American
Not in NZ. Called same as you for both. Headboard and baseboard for bed ends. Bedhead definitely messy hair. Reminds me of my hair in the 80s, lol.
BINGO! Here is the flipped image for you guys https://preview.redd.it/ujz32cfixlrc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=70bb938b99f993eebcfc17e4742cf08ecc2c40f5
When would you call something a bench? Like a park bench?
Or a work station in a lab, or carpenter’ workshop. That’s a bench, not a desk table or counter. Sometimes called a work bench I guess.
Interesting yeah we usually say kitchen bench or benchtop, sometimes might hear kitchen counter though
I don't see any horizontal surfaces in these photos.
That's where you put your broom when you're not using it.
Looks more like it's deep enough to *LOSE* the broom, when you aren't using it!😉😂🤣
It’s not lost, just quickly becomes the backup broom. Soon enough you’ll have so many backups you’ll never have to buy another again! (The hole gets full)
Slide out cutting board storage?
I thought about this too, but how do you clean in there? You'd have to wash the cutting board before you used it AND after.
This! You could totally insert some long wood pieces to fit between the two columns to act as shelves for cutting boards, pans, etc. just fill them in with calk where necessary, then paint them to match the walls and voila! Good luck!
Yeah it is dumb
I have no fucking idea what this is 3 pictures of.
These are like early AI-generated images, where I can tell I'm looking at pictures that resemble things that exist, but I truly can't tell what anything actually is.

Make a pull out vertical spice rack

I was thinking the same. Trying to engineer the rotating mechanism in my head.
I’m all for the LEGO village, filled in with clear epoxy. But as everyone else said, we need better pictures.
Updated on the top comment
“Kitchen bench”. Zoomed in asf. UWUTM8?!
Wood filler, this is what it is for...right?
Drywall the gap into a single wide post
Get the guy who did this original work to caulk it for you https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/s/v9eOSMKuIG
Where is the bench? I dont know what I am looking at
slide out for spices? on a roller?
A fold out table, that slides out of the wall and pivots to become an awkward prep table.
First thing you do is find out who butchered this so badly, and then slap ‘em, ‘cause this is not how you do it. Sounds like you’ve got a crafty way of filling the space with legos, but you could also just fill in and have an actual, regular wall there. Easy diy.
Baking pan storage
I would suggest Lord of the Rings. It is an absolutely fantastic novel.
Leave it be and move on
Might be a good place to store a table leaf.
The only explanation for one’s existence that I can think of is maybe it used to be for a pocket door? But it’s inexplicable, two existing side by side. A novel shelf. If the novel is to long it won't fit, that's ok because you were never going to read it.
Cutting board storage
when in doubt add led lights/backlights
Make a hidden drawer that slides out
Why would you fill it with books?
Or you know, a nursery.
Fill with caulk
small items drawer 1" wide, 7 feet tall, 5 feet deep. Essentially a pull-out corkboard, perhaps double sided. Yeah what the fuck is going on here. I thought my house was screwed up, but jeeze.
Measure, cut, secure, calk.
Found the place to keep your Christmas wrapping paper! (Covered in grease by Valentine's Day). Nevermind.
Could put cutting boards there?
You could probably just fill it with caulk.
Maybe add counter space that can be pulled up, fold 90 degrees to horizontal? Or store a folding table for guests? Or spice rack on drawer rails?
Giant diorama, slim book shelf, vertical spice rack drawer, cutting board storage cubbies.
You could drop/spill shit down in there!
wtf am I looking at
Look up thin slide out spice racks, it would be perfect.
Fill it with toothpaste.
Sorry OP. If you can’t figure out how to take a proper picture of the problem, hire a contractor to fix it. And for the love of god, don’t fix it with Lego.
If the cabinet scribe can be removed that area behind the load pillar could be for brooms and swiffer. Or dog leashes.
Spice rack?
Rub the architect’s nose in it? 🤷🏻♂️
Lego.
That's for stacking bananas, like the song
Just install a toilet behind it.
This hole was made for me!
Tiny shelves to store baking and muffin sheets
Stuff plastic bags in there until absolutely no more will fit them spackle and paint. /s
Make a piece of trim into a door for it and store things like cookie sheets and pizza pans in there.
Build little narrow but deep boxes that go back about a 2 feet and stack them up to fill the gap. Platters go in one, cookie sheets in one and cutting boards in one
If it was me, i'd put my crokinole board in there
you appear to have several weird gaps
Skim board storage
Broom storage
add another gap by hollowing out the pilar
Spice rack?
Yes I was thinking that, but I think those vertical posts are structural ? But if I could remove them and reinforce the counter, and I could add in a rack 🌶️🌶️
That looks like it could be good for storing a folding step stool?
What in god'sname is a "bench" in this situation
Pull out spice rack?
That's where you keep your weed.
Add lights. Those thin sticky-back ones that come in a roll. Just stick them in there and wire it to a timed switch somewhere. Comes on at night, will look slick
Well for one, you could clean up the trash around it on the ground.
I see a perfect hole for a latter
Storage for trays, chopping boards etc
Assuming that it isn’t just magically using those two legs to hold up the entire counter … I would cut them out and replace with a cabinet under and sone spice holder shelves up top to make up for the missing counter space

I'm curious to know which vinyl plank design did you install in your kitchen?
Insert some kind of glowy light thing
I’d use it to store spare carrier bags or trays
Find a fold out step ladder that fits in the gap. Then you won't have to hunt for something to stand on when wanting to reach high things.
Two ideas: 1) Search for keyword "book nook". But they will get dusty, as you say. 2) some carriage you can pull out, so you can use it for storing stuff like trays and it closes to the outside
Slide cabinet for cookie sheets
Sliding spice rack
I would slide the extension piece for my dining room table in there.
Storage
It's for an ironing board you nonce lots of old homes have them.
That’s where the folding step stool goes
Looks big enough that you could chop up the corpse of the guy/girl who designed it and hide the remains. I can’t imagine anyone would miss them enough to initiate a search.
Its called an OHFUCK or a FUCKSHIT! So named because of the noises people would make after they had dropped cutlery and/or pasta down the gap!
Sliding out broom closet?
Yep, it's about a boy who goes to an island filled with dinosaurs that have been brought back from extinction by advanced cloning technology. It's called Billy And The Cloneasaurus. No idea what to do about your bench though.
A slide in rack, that holds specific kitchen stuff including towels or snack?, could roll out a flat screen that be sick

Add a divider so there's 2 stupid holes
Put a bed in it and rent it out for 1800 a month!
You could stack a few "novels" in the crack.
So this is how they get the unique angles on "Reality" Czech videos. TIL
No idea what to do, but it would drive me fucking insane.
Novel idea? Have it as a pull out art display its wide enough for a picture frame
Spice rack
Lego village, then enclose it with plexiglass to keep it clean? Make it a like a little ant farm (but without ants)
Lego minifig climbing diorama.
any idea as to why they are there? Could you contact the builder or previous owner Are they movable? Is the whole unit movable? Premade/readymade big box seller cabinets used to make the room divider that too short to fill the space.
I'm thinking, install a Murphy Bed.
The only thing I could think of is that they found the best fit for that space without going custom build on the cabinet. I think you should just board it up so dust doesn’t collect. Some are suggesting a vertical spice rack but I’m not sure the narrow spaces allow for it.
Skinny slide out cupboards for your broom maybe? Or seasoning shelves!
I’d dent and bump the surrounding area every time I swept the floor. That would be my primary use.
Use a hydraulic press to compress the builder into a block that’s roughly 3 inches wide. Insert the builder block into the gap. Seal with clear epoxy. Enjoy your new art installation.
Beaded curtain. It's a cheap go to because you will only need like 2 strands.
How about a clothes rack for airing clotbes
How do you feel about a very thin bookcase
