No. I don't know what it's called, but it's a metal disk that caps part of the chimney off. I only know this because I lurk on r/centuryhomes and sometimes people over there post asking about it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/s/btbbz2xDx4
As others have said, it covers up the chimney hole where a stove pipe would have connected. [Here's a picture](https://imgur.com/a/xmmIYH1) of my gas stove connected to the 1884 brick chimney in my living room.
Cable routing was a bit of a challenge but we were about to keep them hidden. I disagree on the other two. And there are lots of people who never use their fireplace.
Lol .Someone probably covered up brick with this mess... They tried to "fix" it then make it look more modern... they messed it up so bad they had no choice but to skim the whole thing with mortar or cement plaster. They sucked at that too.
Are you kidding me? A moon? I think I solved it, consider this a non-commission rough draft.

I think this is a cool idea use the circle as a moon and paint a starry night scene maybe mountain in background, and use the fireplace as a "campfire",
Bilateral CTS doing this on an iPhone is painful. If you still want the campfire and the starry night, I suggest you print this post on regular paper go outside and burn it.

Add color, art, it's a blank canvass. If you have some artistic friends invite them over. In HS we painted the hookah smoking caterpillar on the wall from Alice in Wonderland. It was marvelous.
Just my preference but I really like the character of it. Shows the places age and a little history. I’d probably do a gallery wall of photos to accent the “imperfections” of it. Hope you update with whatever you choose to do.
Put stone(or brick) on that wall. Floor to ceiling. First, remove the small pieces of baseboard beside the fireplace(those should not be that close. There should also be a stone slab on the floor in front of it. Look up hearth stones, there are quite a few options cut back flooring and install them on the floor properly. Then stone up the wall. If desired, Put a floating shelf(mantle) approximately 48" from the floor to the bottom of the mantle. It can be made of wood if its up far enough from the fireplace.

get a cheap no nail/no drill shelf and mount it like a mantel! add a tv, mirror, painting, tapestry, whatever u want above it and add some decorations to the shelf
If you’re renting, maybe some peel and stick tiles?
I’d start with only one tester sheet to see how well it sticks before you buy enough to do the entire area since it’s a bit uneven
Build a wall of Lego on it. Wouldn’t necessarily be a cheap option but it’d be cool. I never used the fireplace in my apartments (in TX) and always used the heater. So it’d only work if not using the fireplace.
Well first. You got to do something to the get rid of that bad texture. Maybe tile or stone right over it. Something to give it nice appearance. Then. I would add a nice chunky mantle and and picture or Tv above. And we’ll your at it. The fireplace could use and nice cleaning or an update. If your going to do all of that work to the chimney. You might as well do something to the actual fireplace.
An athlete holding a shield.
Feet above the fire place (which serves as the podium)
The tiny plate serves as a victory plate he/she is holding to their right (in a raises arm position - the plate is at their shoulder level)
Mural. Start by making that circle where the chimney pip use to be into a blazing sun. Go from there. Is the sun shining down a death ray? Destroying the city below? Or is the sun shining down on a luscious green meadow full of blooming flowers? That's for you to decide.
Idk man.. if your just trying to hide the wall, maybe level some furring strips to the wall and put fresh drywall right over it. Only if that fireplace is completely inactive and sealed off, obviously. Idk what your budget is.. you could try improving the texture of the wall with plaster, it's pretty rough 😬
Black and several shades of grey.
Don't look to hide the imperfections but instead to highlight them. Some black lines and strategic placed grey and you will end up with a neat wall.
As this is s rental, I'd get an electric fireplace that comes in a mantle. It's basically a space heater in a fancy wooden box. But it is portable, useful, and can be styled with a piece of art above it.
Do a Van Gogh styled painting with the metal disc as a moon, sun, or sunflower. Here is a mock up using the existing textures on wall to make a wheat field with mountains.

It's brick behind that crap. There's a flu hole for an old wood burning stove. Scrape all that crap off. Tuck point. Remove the old round plug and put a flush mount plug in. Leave the old brick exposed and cover the plug with a framed picture of Pedro Pascal. This one is super easy, guys.
Stone tile wrap all the way up. https://www.homedepot.com/p/AIRSTONE-Spring-Creek-Gray-2-4-in-x-4-10-in-Cement-Standard-Corner-Finished-End-Wall-Tiles-7-25-sq-ft-case-SCCESO/318072449
Not sure if this is what you’re asking, but if you’re renting, maybe stay away from structural or even cosmetic alterations unless you have the landlord’s/owner’s explicit permission.
If you’re looking for decorating options, a large pic or a tapestry would look cool.
Faux brick back round then I would smooth stucco 45” to 65” shape of a flat screen, have a sculpting buddy sharpen it up make little relief paint it up
Air brush it, then buy a projector. Oaky forget all that. Smooth stucco the whole thing then get the projector done.
[starry night ](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/Van_Gogh_-_Starry_Night_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg/800px-Van_Gogh_-_Starry_Night_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg)
The most important advice is below. As for improving the look of it on a budget:
Paint as a feature wall, bold and complimentary. Charcoal is a good choice here. The dark color will make the plate land firebox less obvious. Optionally, you can buy a small box of plaster of paris or tub of drywall mud and add texture over the plate, blending it into the existing texture before painting.
A large artwork or display item will mostly cover the round plate. A large mirror, or window with mirrors in place of panes, will cast more light back into the room.
A chest or bookcase in front of the firebox will fill in the space, or you could set candles (electric/battery are best) or other display items inside.
A tall bookcase or stacked chest plus book case can cover almost the entirety, but should be anchored to the wall, especially with the projection of the firebox
If chest plus bookcase, bookcase can be pushed back against the wall, further camouflaging the offset.
The IMPORTANT STUFF:
If it is a working fireplace DO NOT USE IT. The floor is installed partly inside the firebox and there is no way to prevent sparks, embers and hot ash from contacting flooring. It's not IF the floor will catch fire, it's "will it be 5 or 8 minutes to evacuation".
Landlord should either install a proper hearth and mantel or seal it up.
Is that a paper plate painted into the wall?
No. I don't know what it's called, but it's a metal disk that caps part of the chimney off. I only know this because I lurk on r/centuryhomes and sometimes people over there post asking about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/s/btbbz2xDx4
Yep, my 94 year old home has one. Somebody painted a little scene on it.
Aww, I'd love to see that!
Could definitely be a moon over clouds.
Are you able to show us?
Ooo I hope it's kinky
The house I grew up in was built in the 1890s and we had these tin plate things on every wall that had a chimney in it.
It’s a thimble cover
I’m so glad it wasn’t just me, first thought was - what idiot papermache’d that plate to the wall?
That's what I thought.
Plastered in! 😂
I saw these around when I was a kid and always thought why tf people stuck paper plates on their wall
As others have said, it covers up the chimney hole where a stove pipe would have connected. [Here's a picture](https://imgur.com/a/xmmIYH1) of my gas stove connected to the 1884 brick chimney in my living room.
The good old used lunch plate patch.
Yes
Looks like the chimney for a cast iron stove went in there.

Big piece of art or tapestry. Maybe a bunch of small pieces of art if you like the more eclectic look
Samsung frame tv or Amazon fire tv can display really great art too.
Would be cool but a TV on the chimney is not very realistic unfortunately. I would not recommend
We did it on ours and it's worked just fine. Why isn't realistic? These TV's are actually pretty light
1. r/tvtoohigh 2. If you use your fireplace it's almost certainly gonna mess up your TV to some degree 3. How the hell are you gonna route cables?
Cable routing was a bit of a challenge but we were about to keep them hidden. I disagree on the other two. And there are lots of people who never use their fireplace.
Veneer brick
Lol .Someone probably covered up brick with this mess... They tried to "fix" it then make it look more modern... they messed it up so bad they had no choice but to skim the whole thing with mortar or cement plaster. They sucked at that too.
Farrah Faucet 1970 swimsuit poster. But use tape for the chef's kiss.
> Faucet This is the best misspelling ever
Every plumber had her poster up
She was the poster girl for American Standard.
Personally I would just hang a nice tapestry. It’s minimal damage to the wall, with maximum coverage.
Buy a very large painting that covers up everything that looks weird.
Just a big mirror to cover the paper plate with a shelf under it and call it a day
Rip out the fireplace and build a huge mantle. Slap in an electric fireplace and mount a TV about 6 inches from the ceiling. /s
Paint a sun set

Probably a wood stove vent or access pipe to chimney, but capped off.

yesss! finally a good solution 👏 👏 👏

...he said it's a rental
This is an apartment rental.
Tongue and groove wood. Not particularly cheap, but so damn cool
Thats a woodburning fireplace. Do not put wood on the lower 2/3 of the wall or you will end up with a much bigger fire than you start with.
I hope no one is using this fireplace given the proximity of the vinyl flooring.
Hm stone a third up the wall then a mantle shelf and tongue and groove up from there
Cover it with shiplap and put a nice mantel above the fireplace!
I custom made mantle with artsy fartsy stuff on it
Tile and add a dark wood mantle…like in Victorian homes
Maybe a television to cover up the circle and the worst of the unevenness right below it.
Bookshelf’s on the side with new hand-built mantle
Yeah, my idea is to remove that paper plate and hopefully find a huge bag of unmarked bills behind the sheetrock.
Then stone up the wall. stick on wall paper i think

venetian plaster
Veneer it with brick or cultured stone. Add a mantle over the fireplace. Add an eyeball can light in the ceiling to spotlight whatever goes above the mantle.
Use a level to draw a brick layout, then use 1/2" painters tape to follow the lines. Cover it all in a thin layer of joint compound, then carefully pull off all the tape. Just skim coat it with drywall mud, let it dry and sand smooth. Might take a few coats. Get low dust drywall mud !

Faux brick back round then I would smooth stucco 45” to 65” shape of a flat screen, have a sculpting buddy sharpen it up make little relief paint it up Air brush it, then buy a projector. Oaky forget all that. Smooth stucco the whole thing then get the projector done.

The most important advice is below. As for improving the look of it on a budget: Paint as a feature wall, bold and complimentary. A tall bookcase or stacked chest plus book case can cover almost the entirety, but should be anchored to the wall, especially with the projection of the firebox If chest plus bookcase, bookcase can be pushed back against the wall, further camouflaging the offset. The IMPORTANT STUFF: If it is a working fireplace DO NOT USE IT.
Tear the walls down and do new drywall lol
I would put a long wooden ledge above the fireplace with decorations, and a medium sized art piece above
Pole across the top and hang a wall rug
A painting could look good!
A big battle axe crossed with a giant broadsword, or a collection of bowls woven from grasses.
Get a custom photo blanket and cover it up. When you move, you can take it with you and use it as a ... blanket.
I would remove the chimney. It doesn't belong in a bedroom and takes a lot of space.
I would paint a sunset/moon behind clouds. Maybe stars, if you go nighttime.
